e can all agree that there are few things better than a Summer Friday. During the summer, days seem endless, so the chance of cutting out of the office a little early seems slightly more acceptable. But, as the old saying goes; ‘Charleston’s Friday starts on Thursday’- and we aren’t upset about that!

Summer in Charleston is a special time.

We were lucky enough to sit down with some of Charleston’s favorite brewers to get the scoop on what makes brewing in the lowcountry an experience like none other.

or the founders of Tradesman Brewing, brewing is more than just a business, its a team sport. Sara, Scott, and Chris met through their kids who all attended the same elementary school. Through their friendship grew the realization that they all shared a common passion for one thing: beer.

For Chris and Sara, the best part about brewing are the people. REVELRY BREWING Ryan Coker

Our ethos revolves around not taking things too seriously and displaying a joie de vivre to all our patrons.

“Life is too short not to have fun.” That’s the attitude Revelry Brewing’s founder Ryan Coker has about beer. For Ryan, brewing started out as a distraction from his day-job working in healthcare, where he felt the pressure of facing his own mortality day in and day out. He explains his career change as a conversation between his ‘id and superego,’ during which he realized that he could transform his obsession with beer from home brewing, into a business. That’s the precise moment in which Revelry Brewing was born.

Now a successful hub for Charleston’s beer community, Ryan has a team that helps operate the brewery, and keep him sane in doing so. When we asked Ryan about the wheat adorned trumpets that decorate his brand, he explains they represent the ‘boisterous merriment in the accompaniment of alcohol’ that revolves around their motto of not taking things too seriously. One thing they do consider serious is their pet project, The Hold, serving up nuanced beers inspired by brewers in the Senne Valley of Belgium and France. Charleston seems to be the perfect place for this band of lively brewers and thirsty locals to meet.

HOLY CITY BREWING Chris Brown

Tucked in North Charleston lies Holy City Brewing, a place that attracts both locals and travelers alike. What started as a rickshaw company, quickly grew into a two-part venture; one part brewery, the other hipster transportation. Chris Brown has been there from the beginning, drawn to brewing by his love of science and creating new and interesting recipes. One of his recent favorites? A collaboration with Brahmari that is slated to be an IPA with flavors of strawberry and rhubarb.

Talent, persistence, and creativity drive the musical genius that is Taylor McCleskey. We were lucky enough to be able to ask him a couple of questions about his musical journey, and how he ended up in South Carolina, and his answers didn’t disappoint. Get to know Charleston’s very own Taylor McCleskey - we know you’ll love him just as much as we do.

Are you a South Carolina native? If so, tell us a fun memory you have of growing up in SC. I’m not a native to South Carolina but I’ve spent the last thirteen years here. I Graduated from Clemson University in 2009 and floated down to Charleston around 2012. Without sounding too romantic-cheesy, my favorite memory is meeting my wife at one of my shows a few months after moving to Charleston, but it was the greatest dose of humble pie I’ve ever received. I’ve never had a huge ego but for some reason that night I guess I thought I was coming off as “pretty cool” and somehow managed to get her number as she was leaving. Months later, with a smile, she finally told me she was leaving the venue that evening BECAUSE of me! Turns out skinny jeans, long hair, necklace down to my belly button, and earrings wasn’t exactly what she was looking for in her dream guy. Thank goodness she ended up giving me a shot anyway.

When and why did you start playing music?

I was around the age of fifteen and I went to my first punk rock concert - I was so enthralled. Up to that point, I was completely sold out to sports, but experiencing that show that night changed me. I was so jealous of the band on stage. A fire lit inside of me and the idea of being a musician has consumed me ever since. It’s not just that you get to entertain people but you get to create something new and exciting, and to hear an audience singing the lyrics you wrote is a feeling that cannot be rivaled.

What’s your musical guilty pleasure?

Christopher Cross “Sailing” while taking a bubble bath, oh, and Camila Cabello “Havana” as of late.

Tell us about Her Majesty’s House Club Band?

This project was a dream realized for me.

Ashamed to say I didn’t fall in love with The Beatles until about 3 years ago, but man oh man, I’m making up for the lost time. I have become the biggest Beatles nut. I grabbed my closest buddies who love the Fab Four as much as I do

and we worked our tails off coming up with a few sets of the classics. We go all out for it... the suits... a projector showing Beatles films... a giant, larger-than-life Union Jack flag behind us...

It’s probably my favorite live music project I’ve ever been a part of. For two years we performed this act weekly. We’re on hiatus at the moment but I can’t wait to revive it.

And who is your favorite Beatle?

Paul, Paul, Paul, definitely Paul is my favorite Beatle, but come on, I love ‘em all.

What’s a little known fact about Charleston, SC that you’d like to share?

I don’t know if you can consider it a hidden gem or not, but James Island County Park is honestly one of the most beautiful places in Charleston.

The reason I’ll declare it my “little known fact” is because I never gave it a second thought until my wife and I moved out to the burbs from downtown. It has miles of gorgeous nature trails that you can walk/run/bike/skate on and the biggest, coolest dog park I’ve ever seen. This is where our golden learned to swim and where my wife and I spend most of our free time.

If you had to recommend one must-see in Charleston, where would that be?

Morris Island Lighthouse. A decommissioned lighthouse at the tail end of Folly Beach. After parking your car, you have a short-hike, through what seems like nothing special, and then all of

a sudden you pop over a sandhill and BOOM this gorgeous, old lighthouse can be seen about a football field distance away. The beach feels deserted, like a scene from LOST. It’s a special place. My wife and I always take our visiting friends and family. Great spot for a Saturday or Sunday walk or picnic.

What’s the inspiration behind your board game, Musicians are Monsters?

It was probably three years ago at a Christmas game night with my family that the idea first struck me. We just wrapped a game of whoknows-what and I thought to myself, “This is my next creative project; I’m going to make a board game.” I closed myself off in the basement that night and wrote it all out on about 12 pieces of paper - I was like a mad-man. Of course, the game has gone through many edits since then, but it’s a cool feeling to be holding this tangible thing that could have easily just been a passing idea that I never followed through on, which happens to me a lot. I love creative projects and almost always have too much on my plate, but this one made it through the long haul and I’m super proud.

Home to a natural background of peaceful waterways and sprawling wildlife, this balmy brick-walked destination is filled with a kaleidoscope of eco-friendly activities whether on land or out on sea.

Between a superyacht sailing captain slipping into the Charleston Harbor to pass on his nautical skills to a fleet of students to a Charleston native showing visitors how to catch their own seafood at sunset, these experienced instructors are bringing a thrill to the outdoors that’s ultimately irresistible and brimming with southern charm. Meet William Miller and Tia Clark who are lending their passport to Charleston’s great outdoors.

CAPTAIN WILLIAM MILLER

Talking Nautical Blue Water Harbors and Sailing Odysseys

C

aptain William Miller, a premiere sailing captain at Charleston Sailing School and Charters, is sending his summer students en route to life on the aquatic from downtown’s low country harbor at the City Marina. The ideal destination for a sailing odyssey, Miller with help from the azure bodies of water that create a challenging, yet rewarding venue for clients to relax, learn, and enjoy the sport of sailing, is mentoring his skipper and crew that there’s no better ruler than the sea.

“After 15 years in business here, I can confidently say we have the best combination of location, yachts, and staff available anywhere in the world,” said Captain William Miller. “Our fleet of yachts range from 25-50ft including monohulls and catamarans, and we are the only location in South Carolina offering the American Sailing Association’s certifications, bareboat charters, private yacht charters, and powerboat rentals.”

Named “Outstanding Instructor” by the American Sailing Association four times, Miller is an ambassador on the waterfront, imparting to his students that nothing about sailing is intuitive, every action and reaction

a learned behavior and developed muscle memory. “You will get frustrated and have bad days, but the rewarding euphoric feeling after a great day on the water can’t be beat,” said Miller.

Becoming a lifelong sailor when he was just five years old in the Chesapeake Bay, Miller developed a love for the ocean early, while embarking on family boating outings with his father. Today, Charleston Harbor’s head of class, Miller when jutting outside his seaside schoolroom enjoys boating with his wife on the Tartan 3400 or grabbing one of the center consoles “to blast around the harbor.”

“We are just extremely lucky to have access to all of these different styles of boats and a beautiful network of waterways in which to use them,” said Miller, lending a special affinity to the Stono River towards Folly Beach. With no substitute for time on the water, Miller plans to venture outside the southern sea this summer and anchor in Kodiak, Alaska, sailing in the Bering Sea for the first time.

“In the immortal words of my hero, Captain Ron, ‘If anything is going to happen, its going to happen out there,”’ said Miller.

Founding Casual Crabbing With Tia with her fellow fishing friend on Facebook to lend an insiders look into her adventures outdoors, Clark was initially allured by the sport of crabbing after quitting smoking and advised to change her diet.

“We had a family wedding and I reconnected with a cousin that said he still goes crabbing all the time and invited me out with him,” said Clark. “We went out the next day for about five hours and my life hasn’t been the same since. I was hooked.”

Living the “crab life,” Clark saw first hand the healing powers of the water and great outdoors, losing over 100 pounds. “I used to wear a 48 pant size and now I’m wearing a 36!” said Clark. “I pretty much started this business that I love more than anything, kicking and screaming.”

Two years later, Casual Crabbing With Tia has become recognized as one of the top four Air B&B experiences in the world, coining

Charleston’s one and only authentic crabbing experiences.

“Anyone can do it and become empowered by it,” said Clark. “My experience is also part of my life changing journey that I hope never stops. All my guests keep the journey alive.”

Owing to her guests this prevailing experience, Clark finds fondness in sharing her crabbing secrets with new visitors and making new friends as they learn to hook and bait for the first time. The “adrenaline” when they catch their first blue is irresistible. “I am convinced that I could pack a bag and travel the states staying with all the new friends I have made since starting this,” said Clark.

A native Charleston local, Clark is ambitious is to share her passion for crabbing to as many people as she can, learning more about her favorite crustaceans and helping them thrive in the Lowcountry coastline.
