rowing up, music was close to my heart, and in many ways, helped shape the person I grew up to become. The power music

has to bring people together is undeniable — it evokes strong emotions, it heightens awareness, and it builds empathy like no other medium can. Arguably, music can even facilitate positive social change, and make members of a community feel more connected. I think I speak for most Charlestonians when I say that we’re so fortunate to live in a city with such a strong affinity to the art form.

When curating this issue of The Cultural Almanac, we hoped to illustrate the ways in which the sounds of the South are much like our region’s fingerprint — each groove a winding road traveled, a human story worth telling. Anyone who listens intently can hear the cultural shifts that have fueled the evolution of our way of life. Our multifaceted nature, our soulful heritage, our grit, and eagerness to transcend challenges.

Spring is a particularly active season for Charleston’s music scene, with major performing arts events such as the High Water and Spoleto Festivals taking place in April and May, respectively. We’re so grateful to have guests visit us from all around the globe to experience world-class performances by both renowned and emerging artists in indie and experimental music, opera, jazz, blues, soul, hip hop, and every fusion genre in between. They come to hear our memories and see themselves reflected in them.

To me, this also sums up the beauty of working in the hospitality sector — seeing ourselves in each other’s experiences, recognizing that deep down, we all yearn for the same things: a plush bed, a hearty meal, and a warm welcome. HIGH WATER FESTIVAL • COMING IN 2021 The High Water Music Festival invites music lovers of all ages to dive into a coastal adventure of musical discovery, culinary experimentation, and boundless personal freedom. ith its rich history and cultural heritage, Charleston is home to a vibrant music scene. From traditional jazz and blues to experimental sounds, the city has built a reputation for its wide-ranging music venues and thriving indie record store scene. Seasonal events, such as the annual High Water Music Festival, also invite audio connoisseurs from around the globe to bask in electrifying world-class performances.

With the safety and health of fans and the community in mind, this year’s High Water Music Festival has been cancelled in accordance with CDC guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19. However, its next edition promises to uplift our spirits by bringing together some of today’s best American music performers under a single banner.

Previously booked acts have included headliners Wilco, Nathaniel Rateliff and Brittany Howard.
