There is a lot to celebrate here in the Lowcountry as we approach the end of the year. We reflect back on our year and the effort to engage more deeply with our community. In 2019, we launched our Charleston Changemaker Series, a sequence of discussions celebrating local men and women who are making an impact throughout our city. We also continued our effort to reduce our Carbon Foot print in our propertywide Green Initiative. As we look forward to the upcoming year we task ourselves to be better. Be better to one another, be better to our community, be better to the earth and be better than we were yesterday.

A Lowcountry tradition, the Boone Hall Pumpkin Patch has been a local darling for generations. Guests of all ages are welcome to explore its colossal eight-acre corn maze.

Family owned and operated by brothers Jason and Josh Bell, Springbok Coffee Roaster is a small batch, specialty coffee roaster based in downtown Charleston. The company opened its doors in 2015 and quickly became a local sweetheart, praised for the meticulous processing that their growers enforce at each mill to ensure a superior cup quality and flavor profile that stays consistent year after year. TO CHARLESTON CUISINE “I’m beyond excited to be in Charleston,” said Stuart Rogers. “My approach will be to keep it simple, yet refined and fun.” But when outside the kitchen doors, Rogers has fallen in love with Charleston’s stellar outposts such as Chubby Fish, Maison Bistro, and The Ordinary.

A Gastronomic Roadmap And Christmas Day A city of upscale fare and authentic southern food, Charleston is a flight of modern flavors and reimagined variations on shrimp and grits and fried chicken and biscuits. And Daniel Nightengale, resident food and beverage director at The Restoration, is lending gastronomic connoisseurs his expert culinary roadmap to the best Charleston has to offer. “I love to go to Edmunds Oast Restaurant and sit outside and have some craft beers,” said Daniel Nightengale.

Frequenting The Rise Coffee Bar for a locally curated cup of coffee and Early Bird for a simple plate of fried chicken, eggs over medium and hash brown patties, Nightengale is clued in to Charleston’s long lasting restaurant scene. But his midday meal of choice is a lobster roll from 167 Raw. “You may wait but the wait is worth the first bite,” said Nightengale.

Most anxious to taste this season’s holiday feast, Nightengale is preparing early with his relished Christmas day recipe. “I love the perfect Prime Rib, slow roasted with a heavy salt and pepper crust,” said Nightengale. Aided by his mother’s secret tips, Nightengale says that it’s the little details that make a difference.

STUART ROGERS Talking Local Haunts And Southern Staples Stuart Rogers, Atlanta bred star chef, is transforming the Lowcountry into a city of highs with an impressive taste for simple eating in synthesis with refined ingredients and uninterrupted flair. Recently joining the culinary team at Downtown Charleston’s, The Macintosh, Rogers is bringing an unparalleled charm to this off the harbor restaurant with a bounty of fresh seafood and meat sourced from adjacent waters and eco-friendly farms.

Wild Gourmet Mushrooms And Hidden Gems Breathing a new flavor profile into the Lowcountry cuisine, local mushroom forager Micah Garrison is elevating Charleston’s sophisticated palate with chanterelle, oyster, chicken of the woods, and black trumpet mushrooms. Releasing this gourmet vegetable into the wild of southern country cooking, Garrison is embracing nature’s form of edibles by sautéing and roasting them in his own kitchen and triple tasting them in Charleston’s native institutions.

“Edmond’s Oast, The Establishment, The Grocery, and Nico are all strong supporters of serving local mushroom dishes,” said Micah Garrison. “Acme Lowcountry Kitchen has been an amazing supporter as well, in a more casual atmosphere.” First engaging with this exotic delicacy while biting into a slice of pizza, Garrison has forged as long standing adoration towards South Carolina mushrooms. But when tempting his taste buds on native savors, Garrison delights in dining at one of Charleston’s hidden gems, Moe’s Crosstown, for their hospitality, bartenders, and top notch burgers and wings.

And with the holiday’s approaching, there is nowhere Garrison would rather be than inside his mother’s kitchen. “My mama makes what we call a ‘Sugar Plum’ ring for Christmas morning,” said Garrison. A mix of sweet dough, cherries and nuts, this holiday tradition is a taste of southern culture with the comfort of family in mind.

Between influencing the local community with the power of art to carving out a new niche for hip-hop, this breakthrough musician is carrying his resilient voice from inside a classroom to Charleston Music Hall with prodigious talent and soulful hits.

USING THE POWER OF LYRICISM TO CREATE A NEW UNDERSTANDING FOR HIP-HOP, Benny Starr is making a name for himself as the household sound of Charleston.

R

ecently launching his newest vinyl disc, A Water Album, recorded live at Charleston Music Hall, Starr is transforming South Carolina’s music industry with creative anthems rooted with robust lyrics calling for change. “This album meant so much to me because I wanted to speak directly, and intentionally, to

my community,” said Benny Starr. “The album was a love letter to black people in Charleston, South Carolina, and across the Diaspora.”

Starr, a wordsmith with a political conscience, has influenced the community through poetic lyrics, reflecting on real people, experiences, gifts, and culture. Inspiring locals to become aware of what is right here, Starr is committed to helping others understand the genuine power of music and how it allows others to think critically. “I want us to question things and demand more, to reconnect with our power as the people,” said Starr. “In that way, politics will remain as an integral part of my work, and that work will always be with the people in mind.”

Recording A Water Album with a live out-of-studio audience was a defining aspect of producing Starr’s newest album. “It was an experience,” said Starr. “You can hear it, the way the audience members and I play off of one another harkens back to gospel and jazz music traditions.”

But inside a classroom, teaching in a Socratic circle with students and discussing community issues, is where Starr most feels connected to “the people,” resonating with all types of personalities and backgrounds.

“I see myself in them ... past, present and future,” said Starr. “Both as a musician and an activist, I need to remain accessible. My music and my message must reach folks where they are. If my community cannot call on me to be there, then something is wrong.”

Establishing a bond with Charleston locals, Starr notes that his influence on others is due to his authenticity and love for people that sets him on fire. And this emotional zeal for realism is only the beginning, with an upcoming residency in 2020 at The Restoration where Starr looks forward to pealing back the layers of his artistic self. “Fans can expect to see me in ways that they have yet to see me!” said Starr.

urating an elegant holiday event is all about the details. From festive feasts to stylish seasonal table accessories, there’s an

array of assets you can employ when trying to design a memorable experience.

Kristin Chambless, the woman behind the lifestyle, travel and style blog COLOR by K is welcoming Charleston locals into her tasting room to get an insider’s look into what it takes to set the perfect table. Her designs are showcased in the homes of her many clients and in luxury suites at The Restoration. A blond bombshell with a knack for entertaining and style, Kristin Chambless is always eager to share her holiday decor inspiration -- ideas that often break down traditional rules and challenge the ways in which we define elegance and class. “Having a ‘wow factor’ is all about breaking boundaries,’’ says Chambless.

Learning to entertain from her mother and grandmother from an early age, Chambless has honed her ability to create gorgeous spaces by doing. This Charleston extrovert’s approach is incredibly effective largely due to her gift to breathe warmth into everything she does.

This season, she brings us intriguing centerpieces that seamlessly balance luxury and glamour with classic Southern hospitality.

Chambless explains, “I find that decor is ‘beautiful’ when people can connect to it. A good way to achieve this is by having it integrate materials, textures and scents that spark memories and a deep sense of belonging.”

Always practical, Chambless enjoys creating enchanting spaces for children with paper products from Coterie Party and Target. When it comes to adults, she places special emphasis on the importance of presentation. According to Chambless, even a modest champagne can be spectacular when served in the right glass and when the toast is made under the right light. A nicely set up barcart complete with flowers, coasters, stirrers and striped straws also has the potential to turn heads. “Etsy and local vintage stores are a great source for pieces you can use to dress up bar carts and shelves,’’ says Chambless.

While decor plays a fundamental role in creating a memorable ambiance, Chambless stresses that we shouldn’t forget about the importance of serving the right hors d’oeuvres. “I love everything rich and cheesy, including German pretzel and beer cheese. These snacks pair beautifully with mulled wine or spiked eggnog,” she adds. Whether working at The Restoration or outfitting the homes of her clients, Chambless always recommends using fresh, premium ingredients from local farmers and vendors.

TOP TIPS TO CURATING THE PERFECT HOLIDAY DINNER PARTY INSIDE A SUITE AT THE RESTORATION: 1- Curate a guest list of dynamic people.

2- Delegate anything you don’t enjoy doing. Don’t feel like you have to do all the things on your own, you’ll only stress yourself out and not be the most enjoyable host.

3- Load up on the wine and beverage options, even if it seems excessive.

4- Curate a playlist fitting for the occasion. Music gets the party going and often sets the tone for your guests.
