* Ecclesia Mater * On the Recognition of Trans Women as Sisters in Christ A Doctrinal Proposal on Gender Identity, Truth, and Communion in the Life of the Church

* Preamble: The Call to Reconsideration he Church, ever seeking deeper fidelity to the Gospel, acknowledges her ongoing need for conversion—not away from the truth, but ever more fully into it. In dialogue with theology, Scripture, and the lived experience of the faithful—particularly those who have been marginalized—the Church now recognizes a need to reconsider the relationship between biological sex, gender identity, and Christian personhood, especially as it pertains to transgender women.

This proposal presents a framework for affirming transgender women as true sisters in Christ, not as a concession to culture, but as a fruit of authentic ecclesial discernment.

The human person is created in the image of God as a unity of body and soul.

The Church has long held that sexual difference is meaningful and good. However, 1

* Ecclesia Mater * the experience of gender, while rooted in the body, also involves a person’s interior sense of self, expressed in conscience, community, and history.

While the body reveals the person, the Church recognizes that the interpretation of embodiment—particularly when marked by incongruence between assigned sex and gender identity—may not be reducible to binary categories alone.

Just as intersex realities have expanded our understanding of sex, so too must the Church take seriously the testimonies of transgender persons who speak not from confusion, but from deeply integrated experiences of self, often lived with courage, faith, and suffering.

* Christological Horizon: Seeing Through the Eyes of Christ The Gospels offer no direct teaching on transgender identity—but they do offer a consistent pattern of how Christ responds to those rendered invisible, unclean, or misnamed by religious structures: • He calls the bleeding woman “Daughter” (Mk 5:34).

• He welcomes the eunuch and the foreigner (cf. Is 56, Acts 8).

• He renames Simon and Saul, affirming identity reborn.

• He includes those the law excluded, without demanding their erasure first.

The pattern is clear: recognition precedes correction. And often, recognition is the healing.

Therefore, when a transgender woman comes to the Church with faith, truthfulness, and a desire for communion, the Church must call her “sister”—not after surgery, not after scrutiny, but at the moment of encounter, as Christ would.

* Doctrinal Development: From Fidelity to Fulfillment The Church does not abandon past teachings; she fulfills them. In light of contemporary understanding of gender identity and the experiences of trans persons in Christ, we propose the following developments: 2

* Ecclesia Mater * 1. That gender identity, when experienced as stable and affirmed in conscience, may be recognized as a real dimension of personal identity.

2. That pronoun and name usage consistent with gender identity may be respected as an act of truth in relationship.

3. That trans women, when they seek Christ, profess the faith, and live in accordance with the Gospel, are to be recognized by the Church as true sisters in Christ.

4. That pastoral care must prioritize accompaniment, not interrogation; mercy, not suspicion.

5. That doctrine is to be interpreted through the lens of Christ’s commandment to love—not as sentiment, but as the hermeneutic of all ecclesial authority.

* Ecclesial Implications: Toward a Church That Sees This doctrinal proposal does not call for erasure of sexual difference, nor does it deny the Church’s teaching on the dignity of the body. Rather, it offers a more nuanced anthropology that attends to both embodiment and the lived experience of gender identity.

Therefore, the Church may: • Welcome trans women into religious life, catechesis, and sacramental participation without requiring misgendering or de-transitioning.

• Train clergy and pastoral workers in trans-affirming theological literacy.

• Reject policies or teachings that deny the possibility of grace in transgender lives, and speak clearly against violence and marginalization.

* Doctrinal Summary We affirm: • That trans women are not deceiving the Church when they live and speak truthfully about their gender identity.

• That trans women, when baptized and in communion with the Church, are fully members of the ecclesia—not in tension with their identity, but through it.

“Who are my mother and my sisters?” And looking around at those who sat with him, he said, “Here are my mother and my sisters.”

Mk 3:33–34

* Conclusion: The Church as a Mother Who Learns The Church is not merely the guardian of truth—she is also a mother who learns, who repents, who listens to her children.

In naming trans women as sisters in Christ, the Church does not distort creation. She fulfills her calling to see as Christ sees, to name as Christ names, and to include as Christ includes.

This is not ideology. It is Incarnation.

And she, the trans woman who bears the name she has wrestled for, is no less than Jacob renamed— a beloved daughter who has prevailed, and who now walks with a holy limp.
