Sustainable Property Development Project
INSPIRATION AND GOALS You may have seen increasingly attached to the lapels of world leaders or figures in the public eye a circular badge with a series of different colours displayed upon it. You might have wondered what it stood for. The importance of a wide and varied life? A round table of 17 countries or perhaps a group of good causes expressing themselves symbolically in a fund raising and publicity promoting exercise? In reality this circle of 17 colours reflects the United Nations badge to symbolise the sustainable development goals agreed upon by its 163 member states in 2015. These goals range from the abolition of poverty to the quality of education from gender equality to climate action and increasingly form an awareness of issues of global importance where all countries can agree a path to a better world. The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors recommended to its members through a series of documents how many of these sustainable development goals could be applied to the real estate industry, these range from transparency and disclosure to environmental stewardship to human rights and health and safety. I approached a property development company with my idea for a sustainable development project with refurbishing an old inefficient small apartment into a high energy performing fully refurbished on a sustainable basis home for the future. I have seen many eco friendly new build homes but very few sustainability based flat refurbishments.
