There is currently a growing administrative, industrial and social interest in the effects caused by air pollution and its unwanted impact on humans, ecosystems and material goods, as well as a greater social sensitivity to bad odors. In recent years, a broad legal structure has been created with the objective of minimizing these impacts through the incorporation of Environmental Management Systems, environmental authorizations and the obligation to comply with emission limit values.

RESIDUM, as representative of the Canadian biotechnology firm specialized in biofiltration, BIOREM Inc., has a high performance technology for the purification of atmospheric emissions through the destruction of organic and inorganic compounds and the elimination of bad odors through biological processes.
BIOREM Inc. has installed more than 1,500 purification plants throughout the world in areas as diverse as WWTPs, waste treatment plants, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, paints, tanning, food, rendering, etc.
The BIOREM Inc. biofilter allows the purification of large emission flows with medium and low concentrations of polluting compounds in a more efficient and economical way than other purification systems.
The core of the BIOREM Inc. biofilter is its inorganic biomedium, the result of more than 25 years of practical experience in the implementation of this type of purification system.
We have specific synthetic biomedia for a wide variety of needs (BIOSORBENS, XLD, etc.)
They are composed of a porous, homogeneous and uniform mineral core that has been inerted at high temperatures. Subsequently, it is covered with a layer of substrate and nutrients that allows an optimal proliferation of strains of microorganisms selected and inoculated in the biome.
This arrangement facilitates both the adsorption and absorption of odorous compounds for their subsequent biodegradation.
The technology used to manufacture the BIOREM biomedium makes it possible to have an extremely long lasting substrate that allows treating a wide variety of compounds with high purification efficiencies and with a lower ecological footprint, maintenance and energy expenditure. It does not require the contribution of chemical products and it doesn’t generate waste that needs to be managed, except for purges, so it can be considered an environmentally sustainable purification system. Its purification performance for compounds with a high odor contribution such as Mercaptans, Dimethyl Sulfide and Dimethyl Disulfide is very high and we obtain reductions in the odor concentration of 95% while organic media reach, in the best cases, between 70 – 80%. RESIDUM carries out "turnkey" installations of biofilters maintaining the quality standards required by BIOREM Inc.
The biofilter will require the installation of a general ventilation system, a leachate drainage system, a filter floor, an automatic irrigation system and a monitoring system for critical parameters in the emissions to be treated (H2S, NH3, T°). The installation of a pre humidification system prior to the Biofilter will depend on the conditions of the emissions to be treated.
The difference in initial installation costs between BIOREM and other companies' purification systems is amortized due to the lower consumption and operation costs of the BIOREM Biofilter. CONCLUSION
❖ BIOREM biofiltration technology is capable of purifying atmospheric emissions from very different origins (WWTP, IWWTP, Waste Treatment Plants, rendering plants, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, etc.)
❖ The purification yields for the most common odorous compounds such as Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S), Ammonia (NH3), Organic Sulfurous Compounds (OSC) such as Dimethyl Sulfide (DMS) or Dimethyl Disulfide (DMDS) and Mercaptans exceed the 98%.
The odor concentration purification efficiencies exceed 95%.
❖ The installation costs may be higher than other purification technologies with the same characteristics, but its enormous longevity (up to 20 years), its smaller ecological footprint, its lower cost of electricity and water consumption allow a rapid amortization of the required investment.
