Elvis Duran, host of the Elvis Duran and the Morning Show on Z100 in New York, is this month’s cover feature. He granted us an exclusive hour-long interview in which he discussed the radio business, what it means to be a New Yorker and how he gives back to the community. For this editor, he was a true inspiration, while still being gracious, charming, and funny. Eileen Fulton and Charlie Gasparino are also featured this month. Ms. Fulton, the original bad girl (through her role as Lisa Grimaldi on the soap “As the World Turns”), has turned good! That’s not exactly true: she’s always been good, but she’s exploring her many facets, which include singing, lecturing and acting on stage. Mr. Gasparino, a talented and hardworking Fox Business Network reporter, talks shop, New York and the many breaking stories he helped bring to light. Throughout June, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the amount of exposure Resident is receiving. Look out for us across other mediums - and major ones at that! Selena Gomez’s song, “Love you Like a Love Song,” might be the perfect title for describing America’s top radio host, Elvis Duran. Elvis, who is intimately aware of Selena’s song, would probably agree equate him to a Top 40 song. After all, he is the arbitrator and tastemaker of pop songs for a whole generation of Americans. Based here in New York, in the AT&T building in Tribeca, he is the immensely successful host of Elvis Duran and The
Morning Show on Z100 (100.3 on the dial). Elvis sat down with us (our longest interview to date) to discuss what it means to be a New Yorker, his charitable work, the radio business and what makes him tick.

New York Resident (NYR): I know you’re originally from Texas, but tell us what it means to be a New Yorker. Elvis Duran (ED): Well, I feel like I’m a New Yorker because I’ve lived here are not originally from here either. But moving from Texas to New York is quite a learning experience. You learn about different cultures that you would never ever have the opportunity to be exposed to. I can’t imagine living anywhere else. When you’re a New Yorker, you know everything. You are at the center of the world. Everything happens here, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t matter. There is New a New Yorker and they would have the same attitude. I’d be like, “I don’t think so. You need to get out of New York.” But I truly believe it. That’s what being a New Yorker is about. NYR: What section of the city do you live in? ED: I live downtown, in Tribeca. NYR: And what do you like about Tribeca? ED: Tribeca and everything below Fourteenth Street is what I’m all about. I’ll use all the clichés: I need a passport, I get a nose bleed, everything. I found that everything below Fourteenth Street is just easier. It’s easier to navigate, it is a Staten Island during rush hour than to get to Thirtieth Street. The restaurants here are my favorite; the people that live here are a little bit more chilled and relaxed, less uptight in my opinion. I love it down here. NYR: Since you mentioned restaurants, what’s your favorite restaurant, place in the city, and thing to do? ED: I’ve got a thousand restaurants… I don’t even know where to start! NYR: ED: Oh, God. Isn’t it funny because it’s hard to remember them all? I love Walker’s. Walker’s is a great example of being a true Tribeca gem. It’s a pub at the corner of North Moore and Varick. I’m a regular, and go at least twice a week. I’m great friends with the people who run it. It’s a neighborhood place. Everyone knows your name. It’s fabulous. Then there are places that I don’t go to as much, like The Odeon. The original Tribeca restaurant, however, is Tribeca Grill. It was the big restaurant in Tribeca before anyone else moved to Tribeca. I still love to walk around the corner and go to dinner there.

NYR: How do you give back to New York? ED: Robin Hood Foundation, which is all about taking care of the poor in New York City. Robin Hood was started by a bunch of very wealthy guys, mainly from the hedge fund industry. They decided to take from the rich and give to the poor, so naming it the Robin Hood Foundation was perfect. One hundred percent of the money raised goes to the foundation with no administration cost. Every year they have a huge Robin Hood dinner. Last year Lady Gaga performed. This year Rihanna performed. We raised seventy million dollars in one night. Robin Hood Foundation is one of those large foundations in New York that isn’t talked about enough. I believe in what they do. They hand pick the best charities in New York that help people.
We also work with The Rosie’s Theater Kids. The program takes kids to a Broadway show every year. Now we have our own after-school facilities where kids will come and we help them with their studies, teach them about theater arts. They learn from actors and actresses, they learn how to dance and sing. It’s an amazing program. It’s very New York centric. There is a new one that I’m on the board called Rock and Rawhide, started by some friends of mine who found a kitten but they couldn’t keep it, so they took the kitten to a New York City shelter. They found the decibel level was so high that it made all the animals agitated to a point that they are not adoptable. So their theory is let’s raise money and buy chew toys and blankets for the animals to play with. It will quiet down the shelter sound and they will be adopted. These are kill shelters. So now we’re raising money and it’s great fun. NYR: What do you like to do in the city? ED: I like to walk around and watch people. New York City is a museum. You just sit there and watch the exhibit. I love just watching people walking along the Hudson River, the park. They are renovating the pier, and you
can go out there and play miniature golf. I love the Highland. Everyone’s enjoying it instead of tearing it down. I think it’s fantastic. NYR: Tell us about how you got started. Why did you get into radio? ED: As a little boy, I was sort of a loner. And I always turned to the radio for company. Not only would I hear these happy disc jockeys talking about singers and artists, I just loved how they painted pictures with words. And then I got into music. It started when I was fourteen years old, at a dull suburban radio station that no one listened to. I did the around the world DJ tour through Texas and Atlanta, from Atlanta to Philadelphia, then to New York. I never planned on moving to New York in my career. Radio just kind of led me. You just went to where the jobs were. But now I’m here. I can’t imagine doing radio anywhere else. NYR: What does it mean to have a radio voice? Do I have one? ED: You do have a radio voice because I don’t think people can identify and connect with a perfectly polished sounding announcer’s voice, because it isn’t real. I think (…) as long as what’s coming out of your mouth - what you’re saying - connects, that’s where it matters. I’ve got a stuttering problem; every once in a while I just start stuttering over my words, but I’m not going connect with someone, you just be you. NYR: Do you think your radio personality is your real life personality? ED: Yes. Well, from 6 to 10 a.m., I’m given license to go further than I would after 10, as far as giving my opinion and loudly screaming it. We sometimes pump up the volume just to make it interesting, but it’s honest. NYR: How did you come up with phone tap? ED: The phone tap is nothing new. We didn’t invent that; we just perfected it. A lot of the times people recognize their voices and a lot of times they will say it’s funny, but they won’t allow us to run it.

NYR: Do you have a favorite celebrity? ED: I’m in love with Nicki Minaj, and Rihanna is always a great interview. But you never want to interview your idols. You’ll be disappointed every time. I love Madonna, but when we interviewed her, she was just not there and it was a terrible time. NYR: And tell us about your cast members. How do you come about them? ED: Well, I’ve said this, I’ve said it in several interviews: I’m sort of like Dorothy skipping down the yellow brick road; I just keep collecting all these characters. We have a lot of people in this cast. Danielle Monaro and Greg T, and Skeery, the producer, these three have been with us since we started the morning show. They started as interns; they never worked anywhere else. They never want to work anywhere else. Caroline Bermudez moved from Miami and joined us about eight years ago. She’s a huge name on the show. The list goes on and on. We got tons of people on the show. NYR: What do you see as the future of radio? Are you concerned about it? ED: traditional radio station or on the Internet, which is where it’s going. We’re on two different streaming channels everyday. NYR: I saw you on your Internet channel and you were actually physically doing the instrumentation. I was so surprised! ED: You know what? That’s the old school radio guy in me. In the old days you ran your own board, you played your own songs, played your own commercial, you picked up the phone and you hung up the phone. I’m still in need of being in control of that. I really am. Because in my mind I know where we’re going and when we need to move. It’s probably a matter of time until they make me stop.

Getting off the plane on a steamy morning in Santiago, our cold January day back in New York suddenly seemed eons ago. And it was going to get even hotter, as we were headed north, to explore Chile’s desert regions that stretch toward Peru. But we weren’t going to leave without at least a couple of days in Chile’s capital. As our kick-off base, we chose The RitzCarlton, Santiago. Located in the heart of a prestigious neighborhood staying in a hotel within a hotel, with a separate lounge offering services of a dedicated concierge and complimentary treats throughout the day – from breakfast and hors d’ oeuvres to sweets and drinks. Leaving Santiago a few days later, we drove up north for our six-week road trip adventure that would take in Chile’s northern stretches. The late Nobel Prize-winning poet Gabriela Mistral. Infused by poetry, this gorgeous valley is full of pretty villages, eco inns, hilltop observatories for taking in star-sprinkled night skies and artisanal distilleries of the potent with canvas ceilings you can actually open up to the skies. We slept with nothing between us and the night skies. Further up north awaited the verdant oasis town of San Pedro de Atacama, a storied playground for adventure seekers. The choice of activities here, in the world’s driest desert, is as dizzying as the altitude – treks, cycling jaunts, high-mountain climbs, stargazing sessions and sandboarding. Lodging choices are wide and varied, so we decided to sample a pair of properties.

First off, there was our all-inclusive stay at Explora Atacama. In centuries past, the ancient inhabitants of San Pedro de Atacama, known as Atacameños, lived in small communities made up of extended families, known as ayllus. These communities built canals and shared the resources of the oasis. Explora’s Hotel de Larache is located on a lush plain that was once an ayllu, with 42 labyrinthine acres of ancient pathways and buildings. Hacienda-like rooms and suites showcase wooden ceilings, outdoor pools, alongside saunas, steam baths and an outdoor Jacuzzi, make a great place for unwinding after a day of excursions. Each evening, the guides at Explora meet with each guest and plan next day’s activities. Explora is the area’s only lodge with its own private stables, so horseback rides steal the show, whether you’re a novice or an experienced rider. I loved hopping on a horse for a trot through San Pedro’s mud streets and oases. We also did a thrilling trek from Guatin bizarre geological formations. For a full-day fun, we hit the lagoons of Miscanti and Miñiques, a pair of high-altitude lakes inside Los Flamencos National Reserve. Other options on Explora’s repertoire include catching sunrise at Tatio Geysers, the world’s highest geyser world’s best places to see night skies and home to the most powerful observatories. Rainfall is rare, altitudes high (7,900–14,000 feet) and light pollution minimal, which equals incredibly clear skies. At Explora’s observatory equipped with a Meade 16” telescope, visitors can gawk at galaxies that glitter thousands of light years away. Lest not forget the food at Explora, each meal an occasion to look forward to. Favorites included Japanese steak carpaccio, grilled sea bass with vegetables, a palette of lamb with quinoa and a ricotta cake with tangerine sauce, passion fruit and pineapple. Our next stop, Tierra Atacama Hotel & Spa, lay some twenty minutes beyond San Pedro. This all-inclusive boutique neo-minimalist look, outdoor showers and private terraces that sport dazzling vistas of Licancabur volcano lording over San Pedro. You’re probably wondering where “Papiamento” comes from. It’s a mixture of Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch and African dialects. The island changed hands quite a few times over the course of history as various European explorers claimed to “discover” it, and it’s location made it prime real estate for the Atlantic Slave Trade until slavery was abolished in the 1860’s. It’s a grim history that most people in Curacao seem to acknowledge as a part of their past but would rather focus on the present and the positive. Perfect example: In Curacao’s capital city, Willemstad, there is a massive stone prison that was built along the coast to hold all the slaves as they were shipped in and traded out. When you see the old prison from the street, it’s a haunting sight; thick, wrought iron gates and rusty chains scarring each entryway. But as you walk in, you see a slice of paradise awaits you on the other side; one continuous boardwalk of outdoor restaurants and tiki bars that serve frozen fruity concoctions and fresh seafood along the water. The prison itself now houses the kitchens, coolers, and purposed instead of torn down as if to say, on behalf of Curacaoans, the suffering that happened here cannot be undone, and out of respect, should not be forgotten, but as we move forward, let’s enjoy what’s ahead. The people of Curacao are lovers of life and apparently part of this philosophy means prioritizing things like sweethearts and kisses. Fostering romance is a value held in high esteem. Hyatt executives must have caught on to this powerful local sentiment because every inch of the Hyatt Regency Curacao is built around this central theme. It’s no wonder the resort has become a magnet for couples around the world who are planning destination time wedding planner on staff. A bride’s
only dilemma is deciding where to walk down the aisle. The options are endless. It’s white sand beaches playfully blow you kisses throughout the day in the form of warm breezes carrying the harmony of chirping birds. And the food at the Hyatt Regency Curacao is one long slow kiss after another, tantalizing your tongue with every bite. Tangine Chicken Flatbread, Pizza Margherita, and Moroccan Spiced Skirt Steak are highlights on the menu at Medi, the Hyatt’s casual Mediterranean Restaurant, but my favorite was the Lemon Oil Poached Tuna served with squid ink pasta, fennel, asparagus and asparagus and creamy purple pasta kept to the last. Master Chef Norbert Roesch designed the resort’s menus around food that is locally grown, raised and harvested on the island, adding a sense of story and identity to each dish. myself drawn to the beds-by-the-pool. I know, they’re called “cabanas,” but I call them beds-by-the-pool, because what could be more luxurious than being in bed by the pool? You’re lying down on a cushion the size of a king mattress, a pillow beneath your head, four bedposts at each corner and every time you look up, you realize the sky is your canopy, your blanket is the warm, steady sea breeze enveloping you and your décor is a sparkling pool. Why cloud that image with an obscure word like cabana? Not me. I’m calling it a bed-by-the-pool and enjoying the warm it. Little by little, I was falling deeper and deeper into a trance, but what sealed me into a dream-like state was the Atabei Spa. Their treatments are inspired by
inhabitants, the Arawak Indians, whose rituals focused on the heat of the sun, the rhythm of the water, the goodness of the earth and the pull of the moon. Open the door and you are greeted with the soft with soft candlelight and an arrangement of sweet pastries and fruits. Your masseuse meets you, asks you which areas she should focus on and leads you to a room that opens up to a private veranda where you lounge luxuriously after your massage to fully savor it. Absolutely hypnotic. I was fully transformed just like everyone a honeymooner. Now a believer, I asked the lady at the front desk to refresh my memory on how to say “kiss” and “my sweetheart” in Papiamento so I could really learn the words this time. As she pronounced them for me, a big, knowing smile spread across her face. At that moment, I realized my eagerness to learn sunchi and mi dushi showed my appreciation for Curacao more than the phrase “thank you” ever could. The tour guide knew it all along.

Just name what interests you, and you’re likely to find it in Zurich – a city of immense variety, so much that it even became famous as the “metropolis of experiences.” And if you’re looking for a destination with excellent rail and air connections to virtually any location in Europe, there’s no better place than Zurich Airport. American Airlines operates daily, non-stop, roundtrip service from John F. Kennedy International Airport to Zurich, using a Boeing 767-300 aircraft. This means an easy flight to a center of art and culture, in an aircraft that seats 28 passengers in business class and 167 in coach, all with great assistance and comfort. The airport has direct connections to over 150 destinations, and it is just a short tenminute train ride to the center of the city, where you’ll also find Zurich’s Main Railway Station, known as the European railroad hub. But Zurich is much more than just a connection place to other cities in Europe: it has a lot to offer in art, architecture, shopping, outdoors adventures, festivals, and nightlife.

Start your journey through the historical streets of Old Town, where old and new come together: medieval churches, art galleries, antiques, book shops, and boutiques. Arrive at Grossmunster, the Romanesque Protestant church built between 1100 and 1200, and inhale the history and the stories that revolve around the church. Legend says that Charlemagne, king of the Franks and emperor of the Romans from 768 to 814, had started building Grossmunster upon discovering the graves of the city’s martyrs Felix and Regula. Stories apart, it is fact that Grossmunster was the starting point of the Swiss-German Reformation in the 16th century, making it a mark of Swiss history. Another historical mark you can’t miss is Fraumunster, an old Gothic church also located in Old Town. Fraumunster was founded in 853 by King Louis the German, and it used to be a convent inhabited by women from the European aristocracy. Its architecture is pretty impressive, and the highlight (among many other incredible features) is the stained glass windows, created by Augusto Giacometti (in the north transept) and Marc Chagall (in the south transept). to Bahnhofstrasse, the shopping precint, and Augustinergasse, one of the most beautiful streets of Zurich. Augustinergasse is an old, narrow street, full of colorfully painted oriel windows. It used to be the home of medieval artisans, but nowadays it is full of touristic shops, coffeehouses and restaurants. Being that you already are on Augustinergasse, you might as well visit Bahnhofstrasse, a nearby street of shops and boutiques. Here there are two places you can’t miss since you’re in the land of chocolate and watches: Chocomotion and Beyer Watches and Jewelry. Chocomotion is a chocolate store, and their chocolate is prepared by the most creative chocolatiers in Europe. This is heaven for chocolate lovers! The other place, Beyer Watches and Jewelry, is the oldest watch shop in Switzerland, and they have an amazing clock and watch museum in the lower level of the store. The Clock and Watch Museum Beyer Zurich displays around 500 exhibits, with clocks and watches from 1400 B.C. to present day. Literally a place where you can get lost in time. Now that you’ve drenched yourself in history and some shopping, cross Lake Zurich and visit Kunsthaus Zurich – the Museum of Fine Arts, and let the masters of Modern Art sweep you off your feet with the amazing exhibitions Kunsthaus holds. The museum is worldwide renowned for its permanent collection as well as its temporary exhibitions, and is one of the most important Edvard Munch, Vicent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Alberto Giacometti, and Marc Chagall, among other great names. After taking in so much culture and history, outdoors, Zurich is your place. The city has so much to offer it can accommodate all tastes, from park strollers to adrenaline seekers. One good place to start is the China Garden, located right by Lake Zurich. This small and beautiful garden was a gift from the Chinese city of Kunming, and it’s a good place to sit and relax overlooking the lake. As you are near Lake Zurich, why not take
on a cruise? There are options of short and long round trips, and also special cruises such as the Cheese Fondue Cruise, Brunch Cruise, BBQ Cruise,Salsa Cruise, and Rhythm and Swing Cruise. The outdoor options don’t end there, though.Another thing you can do in Zurich is biking. Zurich on Wheels, a city program that offers free bike rentals, is available seven days a week,from May through October. All you have to do is go to a bike station, present your ID, pay a deposit of 20 Swiss Franks, and start biking through this beautiful and environmentally friendly city. You can also bike to Uetliberg Mountain, where you have a panoramic view of the city, the lake, and the Alps. If you don’t feel in the mood to bike there, you can hike to the mountain, which is another very popular way of getting to Uetliberg. Another thing to check out are the many festivals in the city. Throughout the year, Zurich offers different festivals that cater to all tastes. For instance, if you go to Zurich a combo of operas, concerts, drama, dance and open-air theatre. Now, for those who love the nightlife, Zurich
clubs and bars, and the parties only start after 11 p.m., going on until morning. Some house music club, and Mascotte, the oldest club in the city, which plays the greatest hits from the eighties. Finally, as you are in the railroad hub of Europe, you might want to take advantage of the easiness of transportation in this city. From the train station in Zurich, you can reach the highly cultural city of Basel in one hour and 16 minutes; you can reach Lucerne, famous for its Lake Lucerne and its mountain excursions to Pilatus and Titlis, in just 30 minutes; and you can get to Geneva, the United Nations most important international center outside New York City, train. Zurich is also great for those who want to ski because it’s the most frequent air connection to Austria’s skiing slopes. Zurich is really a metropolis of experiences, offering a wide range of multicultural activities, and it’s a given that you’ll have the time of your life there. Not all that many years ago New York’s cruise piers along the Hudson River were a shambles of worn out, outdated wooden structures that required passengers to climb long gangways to reach an entry hatch. On the pier itself longshoremen sold phony “Boarding Passes” to guests accompanying departing passengers. The experience, from embarkation to debarkation, was something far less that pleasurable. Times have changed. New York today boasts one of the best cruise pier complexes in the country, rivaling Florida for East Coast departures: if not in numbers, then in style. Mecca was reinforced recently with the addition of the Carnival Miracle’s yearround sailing itinerary. Carnival has come along even further than the complex here. Beginning in the early 1970s with the Carnival Mardi Gras, a ship that had seen better days and with thrust aimed at a hard partying crowd, it is today one of the more appealing cruise options for cruisers of all ages. That doesn’t mean Carnival has gone sedate. Not by a long shot. Comedian George Lopez has worked with the line shows in the Punchliner Comedy Club.

Revel, pronounced like “level” but with an R (not “revel,” like I thought before my trip), is a new resort in Atlantic City. I believe strongly that it’s a game-changer for that town. At the least, it is a sparkling temple to haute living and adult pastimes. Let me be clear, this is no place to bring children. Everything about it is geared to the adult: casino, nightclub, pools, spas, restaurants and impressed by the immaculate service, delicious food, great card games and quality of facilities. Taking a journey down to Atlantic City is as easy as baking a cake – okay, not that easy, but pretty close. Within three hours drive from The City, this New Jersey resort town has seen many ups and downs. Revel is certainly one of its greatest and proudest accomplishments. With a budget the size of some small countries and currently employing over ten thousand workers, it must be one of the biggest, if not the biggest employers in all of South Jersey. And that’s a good thing. Walking onto the premises is like wrapping oneself in a cocoon of luxury. Only you don’t turn into a of glass doors that separates the entrance to the rooms from the resort and, in fact, casino guests are not allowed up to the resort. In total, the complex is 6.3 million cubic feet in size, all put to good use. My room had a lovely view of the ocean, large shower and ample space to spread one’s wings. But you don’t really care about that, do you? You want to know about the casino, restaurants, and nightlife. In a word: amazing. By the time I left, more than contented. The food alone is worth the drive back. Lugo Café, American Cut from Marc Forgione, Azure by Alain Allegretti and Jose Garces’ Amada are all present and are worthy of praise. The Italian delicacies on display at Lugo were beyond reproach. Wood-oven pizza, antipasta, mozzarella and handmade pastas were just
some of the treats. At Amada, tapas ruled with selections that varied from braised octopus to paella. I am certain that whatever you choose, you Moving onto the nightlife, options abound. There is a burlesque show brought to you by the king of the art form, Ivan Kane. Royal Jelly is both sensual and sophisticated and it takes burlesque to whole new heights. In addition, there is also The Social, which is an entertainment venue at the center of Revelry, their aptly named entertainment section. Here you can pull up to the bar, choose friends. With two levels and three bars, The Social has room for everyone. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to experience their most impressive venue. HQ Nightclub, a creation by Angel Management Group and Revel, will feature four levels, each exuding different experiences that will transform the party scene in the Northeast. The space will include the best elements in nightlife to create an electrifying atmosphere that will ignite the senses. It is slated to open shortly and I know that this alone will attract huge crowds that are exactly the type that Atlantic City desperately needs – young, hip, trendsetters with disposable income. Mention should, of course, be made of the casino. Located discretely on the lowest level (here you also access their 5,500 theater Ovation Hall, and most of the restaurants and nightclubs), it offers every variety of game imaginable. I was particular drawn to Texas Hold ‘em, which has its own section and was staffed by consummate professionals. It is my contention that Revel’s size, newness, style and luxurious atmosphere will win it many fans. but it never felt crowded, which is testament to its excellent design. Revel is a great destination, good for Atlantic City and the perfect spot for a romantic getaway with a loved one. I urge all New Yorkers to go; be ahead of the curve and see what Revel has to offer!

The late day sun was shining brightly as I hit the homestretch of leisurely jog along the Los Penasquitos Canyon at The Grand Del Mar resort, located about a half hour north of downtown San Diego. I’d already conquered the steep uphill sections of the four-mile trail and was now headed downhill, surrounded by a few errant lizards. The view from this stretch of the trail was truly grand. Rolling wildlife made for an exhilarating way to end my run as I approached the main entrance to the resort. It’s tough to be a three-season golfer in NY. In the spring, it’s the reverberating pain I feel when my 5 iron hits a still-frozen fairway. Norah Jones has changed her look—her new album cover was inspired by a poster from a Russ Meyer movie—and her sound. Her latest release, “Little Broken Hearts” was produced by Brian Burton (aka Danger Mouse) and he co-wrote the songs with her and plays various instruments, as does the singer. The CD is edgier than Jones’ prior work, perhaps because this is a breakup album. Did some jerk actually dump beautiful and talented Jones for a 22-year old named Miriam? Jones may not achieve her ambition of murdering her rival but she has created a killer album with spooky effects and catchy tunes. Tessa Souter once wrote a book entitled, “Anything I Can Do, You Can Do Better” (2006). The title is a bit of a stretch because when it comes to jazz singing, you can’t do better than the author. She also happens to be a talented songwriter and her new album displays not only her vocal expertise but also her lyric writing. “Beyond the Blue” (on Motéma Music) is unusual in that all the music is by classical composers, including Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, and Chopin. Three of the songs are familiar pop standards: “The Lamp Is Low” (Ravel), “My Reverie” (Debussy), and “Baubles, Bangles and Beads” (Borodin). For the other tunes, Souter supplied her own words, often dealing with romance. The album’s title track is drawn from Chopin’s Prelude in E Carlos Jobim’s “How Insensitive”). Fauré’s Elegy is reimagined as “Brand New Day,” which Souter wrote for Japan after the tsunami of March 2011. The core group is comprised of pianist Steve Kuhn and his excellent trio (David Finck, bass, and Billy Drummond, drums), augmented on certain tracks by tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm and Gary Versace on accordion in addition to Locke. On June 4th, Souter will perform songs from “Beyond the Blue” at the Blue Note club with Kenny Werner, p; Joel Frahm, ts; Will Holhouser, acc; Sean Smith, b; Billy Drummond, d).
Meshell Ndegeocello is another standout singer-songwriter (also a bass player) and her new album, “Weather” (produced by Joe Henry, on Naive) deals with love but mostly in a subdued manner. If Souter’s voice leaps out of the speaker, Ndegeocello often sings in a husky whisper that occasionally breaks into spoken lines. On “Objects In Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear”, she sings “Tragically longing for the past / I think about you every day / While I loiter on your doorstep.” Potent as her own songs are, the highpoint of the CD is Ndegeocello’s performance of Leonard Cohen’s haunting “Chelsea Hotel.” On June 28th, Meshell Ndegeocello will perform at Highline Ballroom. Ndegeocello’s concert is part of the fantastic lineup at the Blue Note Jazz Festival (June only from the jazz world but also rock ‘n’ roll, country/bluegrass and classical. Shows will take place at the Blue Note Club as well as the Highline Ballroom, BB King’s and other venues. Among the diverse lineup will be Little Richard, Arturo Sandoval, Jerry Douglas, Kathleen Battle with Cyrus Chestnut, Savion Glover, McCoy Tyner, Bela Fleck, Marcus Roberts, Cassandra Wilson and more. Andrew Swift is an extremely talented instrumentalist to watch. His debut album, “Swift Kick” (on D Clef Records) shows that he is interested in far more than showing off his own impressive technique. I also like the fact that he works with himself to his own contemporaries. With a wide range of musical interests he can be appreciated by many. And he often works as the drummer for saxophonist Sharel Cassity and her quintet and the Matt Garrison Project and both saxophonists are here as well as trombonist Michael Dease (who produced the album) plus bassist Dwayne Burno, pianist George Cables, and others. Trombonist Wycliffe Gordon has a likeably gruff vocal on “Brandy” and sweet-voiced Vanessa Perea is featured on two songs, Jimmy Heath’s “The Rio Dawn” and the range as a composer with “Soldier” and “Song For Sherin.” On Sundays in June and July, Swift will be appearing at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Christopher Street with the Sharel Cassity Group. Swift will also be playing with his group -- Lonnie Plaxico, Jeb Patton, and Matt GarrisonPark Bandshell in New Rochelle. Her voice is silky smooth and shouldn’t be missed. Meeting Eileen Fulton is emblematic of a time when a star was a star. One knew one’s place; certain rules of decorum were expected and obeyed. Ms. Fulton, of “As the World Turns” fame, adheres to the mantra of always being one’s best.She is the consummate professional. It doesn’t hurt that she is beautiful in person as she is on screen, and had the most charming Southern accent imaginable. Resident sat down with her to discuss what it means to be a New Yorker, her fame, her life after soaps and what makes her tick. The whole time she was gracious, poised, alluring and, best of all, interesting. I hope you like the piece as much as I loved interviewing her! New York Resident (NYR):I know you are originally from North Carolina, but you live in New York now. Where in the city do you live? Eileen Fulton (EF): I live on the Upper East Side; I have a gorgeous apartment with my two Pekingese – Ella Fitzgerald and Rosemary Clooney – they are seven years old. They are sisters – or so I was told. They probably have different fathers…their mother was a bitch. NYR: Tell us about your accent; did it affect you getting work? EF: up here I went to the neighborhood playhouse,and they had a wonderful speech therapist who helped me get rid of my accent. I did very well. I was tired, it was hot because it was July 3, and my feet were killing me because of those damned shoes. I got to his door and I gave it a push, but it wouldn’t open. I could hear him inside; he was thought, “Damn it, I’ve got to get in there.” So, I gave the door a real heavy-ho (the door was sitting at his desk with his feet up, smoking a stub of a cigar. He said, “Who the hell are you? I’m one hell of an actress, and my name is Eileen Fulton.” He became my agent because he liked my spunk. him and wanted his client Lois Smith, who was a wonderful actress, to come in and play the part of Lisa (Lisa Grimaldi, the role for which Eileen became famous for playing). Lois is about to have a baby, so she isn’t available.” So, they set me up. I had
NYR: years of playing the same character, did you feel like you became her? EF: No, I did not! I don’t like her. Fifty goddamn years of playing her! NYR: Did people think you were Lisa? EF: abusive (the character was known as a I loved it. I was talking to my shrink the other day and I said, “Lisa has been very good to me.” If I go to the hospital or a restaurant, I always get great service! NYR: The show ended in 2010, so what are you doing now? EF: I love to sing because I love having an audience. But we are now working on a lecture series, which is similar to having a nightclub act. I’ve done stage, and I’m always on WBGO (88.3), the jazz radio *Eileen promises me that she’ll be my guest at the upcoming Metropolitan Opera season. I hope we can make that work!

Have you ever met someone so vastly connected and in tune with current eventsthat you feel like you’ve lived under a rock for twenty years? Well, I’ve just had that feeling. And that’s a good thing! The gentleman that I am referring to, Charles (Charlie) Gasparino, a Fox Business Network correspondent, sat down with us and opined on news, Elliot Spitzer, what it means to be a New Yorker and how he gives back. This is a man who is a New York Times bestselling author, has worked at the most prestigious publications and has transitioned into a multimedia marvel with tens of thousands of twitter followers, a devoted cadre of television viewers (he can even affect the day’s stock market with just an utterance) and rabid readers of his many columns across several internet and print titles.

New York Resident (NYR): So, you’re from the Bronx? Charlie Gasparino (CG): Originally. However, I grew up in Yorktown Heights, in Westchester. I worked for both local newspapers when I was younger. I worked for the Peekskill Herald, the Peekskill Community Current and the North County News; these publications are all now defunct. Peekskill, though, was an interesting place to report because George Pataki was the mayor there and he used that as his launching pad for higher all the bad things. NYR: You started off in print journalism; how did you make the transition to television?
CG: I started off in Tampa and I hated it. So, I came back to news. Then I got a job at Newsday City Hall; got enough good stories that the Wall Street Journal hired me. I spent about ten years there. While I was there they had a deal with CNBC where they would use the talent on air. I never did it; I thought it was bullshit. I thought TV was marginalizing news. Then I was breaking all of these stories on Elliot Spitzer; reporting. The Wall Street Journal was unimpressed with the one. And the Journal back then was very competitive. You had to get a certain amount of page one stories every year, a certain amount of scoops, exclusives and there was something called a forty most important stories of the paper and you competed to get in there. There were all these ways you were graded couldn’t get any Spitzer story on the front page. But the wires loved the stories, and CNBC wanted me on, so I just started pitching it to them. They would have me on to talk about Spitzer, and I started to do much more of that. I then broke the story on Martha Stewart’s insider trading and that was TV heaven. And from a stint at Newsweek I ended up coming to Fox Business Network two years ago. NYR: The name of this magazine is New York Resident; we like to interview noteworthy New Yorkers and we think you are one of them. So tell us, what does it mean to be a New Yorker? CG: You walk a lot. There is something to be said about people who live here. I’ve always had a close tie to the city and all of my family was from the Bronx. New York has always been my home. I currently live in Stuyvesant town and have Manhattan “the city”. NYR: What do you like about the area?
CG: It’s out of the way. You do have to walk a lot, but that’s part of what makes Manhattan great. Listen, when it rains, it sucks. I’ve th

a great city to walk around. I couldn’t see myself living any place else. I like the fact that I can go down to Russo’s on 1st Avenue and get mozzarella that’s fresh. I don’t eat desserts every day, but I indulge on the weekend, and Veniero’s got the best pastry in the world. My wife is from Brooklyn and we can jump on the L train, go to her old neighborhood where there are three of the best Italian restaurants in the world. Bamonte’s is right there. It’s one of my favorite places. It’s been there a hundred years, great bartender and he’s been there forever. One of the Bamonte’s daughters is married to my wife’s If I’m in the city I go to a place like th street. I like Fresco by Scotto, and Rosanna is a good friend of mine. I go to San Pietro a lot. The Bruno brothers own three of the best restaurants in Caravaggio. These are Italian immigrants that came here with nothing. All of the Wall Street guys eat at these places. NYR: How do you give back to New York? Do you work with any charities? CG: I work with the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation. If people need me to speak at things, I’m more than willing. But I could do more. I don’t spend most of my time working with charities. I spend most of my time here. That’s one The Marine Corps program I feel very strongly about, and so I try to help out. NYR: Working on anything new? Any scoops you can give us? CG: I think insider trading will be interesting. I think there will be bigger and more sensational cases. We did a story recently that discussed how a journalist is under scrutiny for insider trading. We didn’t name the character. I’m not naming names until I know more, or at least know the culpability of the person. This is going to come out at some point and I cover Wall Street like Resident

By Jeanine Zelkas The Upper East Side’s Il Tesoro (the treasure) is the creation of Chef A.J. Black, who attended the Italian Culinary Institute and was an apprentice of Paul Bocuse. Located in the former Yorkville home of the beloved neighborhood favorite, Primavera Ristorante, Il Tesoro now stands with its predecessor’s original decor having been respectfully restored. The old world elegance that abounds is replete with adornments of silver serving sets and little red velvet pillows on each chair to provide diners with a bit of additional comfort - an interior design touch I appreciated. This lovely upscale Italian restaurant is elegant and cozy, without pretension, and serves consistently good new classic Italian cuisine with Chef Black’s infusions of modern enhancements.
Using fresh seasonal ingredients alongside unique and tasty dishes. When I sampled all the components of Carpaccio Toscana - a slices dressed with olive oil, aged balsamic vinegar, lemon and capers on a bright mound of tender bitter arugula topped with shaved parmesan - together in one forkful, they harmonized into a divinely perfect balanced bite. Our seared scallops starter was visually bold and rich in taste, served in a dark blood orange and balsamic reduction and accompanied by mild strips of grilled radiccio and endive. A Pellagrino-tempura lobster tail gently resting in its shell and served with a salad of tomato wedges and slivers of red onion was equally as appealing. Among the entrees sampled, Salmon Dijonese, prepared with
white wine, lemon and capers in a light dijon mustard sauce with baby vegetables was a delicate yet rich dish, while the more powerful lamb osso buco was outstandingly prepared by braising a lamb shank to rich and tender perfection, causing the fullthe slight sweetness of the meat and its accompaniment of risotto Milanese, though lamb and risotto overpowered the side dish’s inclusion of spicy eggplant, causing it to get a bit lost in the dish. Dessert standouts for us were the house special tiramisu and a silky smooth white chocolate crême brûlée. that old to you and you’d be right. But, in terms of the cost of college, I’m the last of the Mohicans. I just can’t believe the astronomical price tags that colleges are demanding and I can’t believe that parents are willing, wanting and waiting to pay them! As the movie title suggests, “Something’s Got to Give”. The associate publisher of Resident, Mr. Bill Mason, has three daughters. One is almost ten and the other just turned eight; can you imagine what the cost of a four-year education will be by the time they are old enough to go? I can’t. Inversely, I also can’t believe what the pay is for recent graduates. What are we in 1979 all over again? It’s disgusting and it should be another point of contention for parents and students. Does it seem fair to you that a student can graduate in over a hundred thousand dollars of debt and then make $25,000 a year? Isn’t that absurd? Is that even sustainable? I’m not suggesting that I went to school for free – far from it. Yet, at

ballpark of being reasonable. Today, it’s just a travesty and injustice to middle class families. You have to be a millionaire to afford college today. And the state schools aren’t that much better. How is it that the rest of the developed world and much of the developing world affords to send their children to college either for free or nearly for free? How is it that the greatest, strongest and most prosperous nation in the history of humanity allows this to happen? I’m proud of the education I received and there is no doubt in my mind that this country produces some of the brightest and most talented individuals. As much as I don’t like him, Mark Zuckerberg, is a product of the American educational system. Can you imagine the Germans, Italians, Swiss, Swedes or Chinese producing him? I think not. However, this is not reason enough to gouge families. I’m concerned over the future of this country’s college and universities. Will there come a day when universities cost a million dollars or more? With the stagnation of wages since the early 80’s and the indebtedness of the nation increasing year after year, I believe that this is a recipe for
