The Golden Globes brings out more stars than the Oscars because they include television. The parties are also more fun because people start drinking during the awards show and many don’t stop until the wee hours. This will be the last telecast hosted by Amy Poehler and the increasingly erratic Tina Fey. There is already a list of celebrities lobbying for the job … George Clooney walked his glamorous bride Amal down the red carpet in a chic Dior gown and white gloves that would have looked more elegant if they had gone over her elbows. Clooney received the Cecil B. DeMille Award, named after the legendary director. It was first given in 1952; past recipients include Walt Disney, Elizabeth Taylor and Steven Spielberg. Charming Clooney said, “I don’t live at full tilt the way I used to. You begin to hate waking up with the kind of hangover you get from going on huge benders with your buddies.” … Amy Adams, who won for Best Actress for Big Eyes talked about performing in front of a global TV audience “It’s nerve-wracking! Singing in front of billions of people - I’ll be going to Taco Bell when the ceremony is over. Mexican food cures me.”…. Patricia Arquette, who won Best Supporting Actress for Boyhood said, “I don’t read my reviews, but I have a bunch of them and I will when I’m 80.” … Julianne Moore who took home the Globe for Best Actress in Still Alice admitted, “The great disappointment is that when you’re acting, you’ve literally become a

different person in your head, and when you see it you go, Oh! It’s the same face!” … Michael Keaton, who won for Best Actor in Birdman, said, “At some point, you’ve just got to win.” His co-star, Emma Stone quipped, “I used to do Facebook but you get a little too wrapped up in that stuff. It’s more distracting than anything so I don’t any more. I left it behind. I detoxed!” Sexy and openly gay Matt Bomer, who starred in Magic Mike with Channing Tatum and won Best Supporting Actor in a TV Movie for his role in the emotionally riveting and historically important mustsee HBO feature The Normal Heart, said, “It was a gift to get to play a gay role that was written in a three-dimensional human way. You read so many things that are these stereotypes that I find offensive.” … Jessica Chastain Best Supporting Actress nominee for A Most Violent Year talked about crying in rehearsals, “They’ll say, ‘Save it, save it.’ I tell them, ‘Don’t worry. I have a bottomless well of tears.’”… Eddie Redmayne, winner in the Best Actor in a Drama for The Theory of Everything, said, “I walk around talking to myself in accents. Usually people look at me like I’m a complete fruit loop.” … Maggie Gyllenhaal won Best Actress in a Miniseries for The Honorable Woman said, “I almost never have me time. When I have a morning to myself, I’ll get a manicure or a bikini wax or I’ll try to exercise. If I can go for a run, it changes my whole life.” …Joanne Froggatt who won Best Supporting Actress for the still wonderful Downton Abbey said, “Ill-fitted T-shirts stretched over a gut are my pet hate.”…. British bombshell and nominee for Best Actress in a Drama for Gone Girl Rosamund Pike said, “I think it’s OK to play to your strengths, and if I have a quality of Englishness that people like, I won’t hide that. I’m probably not going to play a junkie and that’s OK because there are other people who will do it better.”…. Selena Gomez, Drake, and Tyson Beckford Pare are all fans of Pergola, the Mediterranean restaurant and hookah lounge on West 28th St. On Valentine’s Day, the hotspot will offer two dining options, romantic dinners downstairs and a couples-free zone upstairs for singles in the city that want to meet. pergolanewyork. com … Dale Noelle of True Model Management, who has worked with Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein and Derek Lam, hosted a party at Proper West to raise awareness of the beauty in all body shapes and sizes in the lead up to NY Fashion Week. truemodel.net The National Arts Club and its Office of Fine Arts, directed by Dianne B. These shows compliment the club’s previous exhibitions, including 2014’s record breaking drawing exhibit ‘Charles James: Beneath the Dress,’ from the collection of R. Couri Hay as well as work by Rembrandt, Picasso and Emilia and Ilya Kabakov. nationalartsclub.org … Polo model Morgan O’Connor has branched out into the art world. He gave an opening at his Chelsea carriage house called Pashion Week for artists SeanPenncils and Beau. Guests included gallerist Eric Mourlot, George Merck and Tom Shaeffer, Nick Graham and Elizabeth Gaynes. … Tony Award winner Terrance McNally’s It’s Only a Play opened with Martin Short taking over the role previously played by Nathan Lane; the show also stars Matthew Broderick, F. Murray Abraham and the luminous Stockard Channing, who said, “I hate parties and dressing up. I am the worst celebrity ever!” Leading the applause were actress and author Leesa Rowland and real estate mogul Larry Wohl, actor and director Steve Stanulis, Nicole Noonan, CEO of Novitas, the company that funds divorce litigation, Society Band Leader Alex Donner, philanthropist Elaine Sargent, event marketer Herb Karlitz, Jodi Barrett of Seriously FunnyGowns.com, Altaneve Prosecco vintner David Noto and Merchant Solutions Group’s CEO Billy Morrissey … The Who’s Who of NYC Nightlife came out for The GLAM Awards at BPM Nightclub in the OUT HOTEL. The Cashmere Tastemaker F

or Isabelle Cajfinger, life has always been surrounded by style and beauty. Her brother was the designer and creator of the trendsetting brand Paule Ka, and her stylish mother taught her the gift of elegance. Naturally her curiosity as a designer has brought her to every corner of the globe from being raised in France to studying in Los Angeles, living in Brazil, Southeast Asia, and currently in the Netherlands. Her passion for quality, style, individuality and rarity is what defines her discriminating taste, which is translated into her fine and tailor made wool tapestries and rugs as well as cashmere throws and shawls. Her work has made its way into numerous homes and wardrobes of her international clientele. How did you get started in your business?

I tried to see a connection to all of the jobs I’ve done and my experiences around the world and its always been bringing quality and bridging cultures. I work with a French partner who also goes to Kashmir frequently. It’s a dangerous place to go. She and I design different things and this is perhaps the last generation that embroiders everything by hand as their kids don’t want to do it or work on tapestries and rugs. Where do you find these Kashmir men?

My partner found them as she always gravitated towards tapestries that were made in Kashmir when she was decorating her Parisian apartment. She’s also an agricultural engineer and had to visit the region to see if the money allocated to the area by the European Union had been well used. Going there she found a lot of fine rugs in the small shops and

she began to adapt their styles to the European taste and also used their craftsmanship. How do you come up with your designs?

For this collection I was inspired by the canals in Amsterdam. The view is gorgeous from the canal houses. I went to the city hall and I got the architectural renderings of one of the streets, which has a lot of different gables and then I gave it to my partner who brought it to Kashmir and they started to hand embroider the scene - with the reflection of the water in the glass and it took them 2 years to finish. These gentlemen are illiterate so they had to do another one to keep in case I wanted more. I work a lot with expats who want to bring home a piece of Amsterdam so I try to

keep production but it takes a long time. My partner also designs a lot and adapts from existing designs. She also looks at a lot of vintage books on Arabic design. How about the fabric?

The cashmere comes from Kashmir but the linen is from Belgium, which is the best in the world. The quality of their cashmere from Kashmir has the best reputation in the world. There are specific goats that only live in this region, their hair must be harvested in June and the way you cut it and comb the goat’s hair is very important. Who are your core clients?

Decorators and people looking for tailor made products whose homes are already filled with a lot of artwork. At the end we are supporting many of families and communities, so also people who are socially responsible. What is the turnaround time?

The simpler designs take a couple of months, but I have had some shawls that take 3 years to weave. How are you growing the business?

I don’t know how much I can create and fill orders. I’m also worried that some people will copy and cheapen my designs. I ask myself how I can grow it for people who can appreciate the rarity and can afford it. The prices start from $400 and up for a shawl. I would like to have ladies who host parties to sell the line or I am looking for some distributors. For more information: icajfinger@gmail.com

anye West, Adrian Grenier, and business luminaries including real estate mogul David Perry are all collectors of Saudi Arabian artist Abdullah Qandeel’s work. He has also attracted the most powerful clientele in the Middle East, from billionaire Saudi princes and Malaysian entrepreneurs to restaurant and retail tycoons. “I’ve always felt everything was possible, and I still do,” says Qandeel, who has held successful shows in Monte Carlo, his hometown of Jeddah, and New York City, where the Saudi ambassador to the UN requested Qandeel’s work for an exhibit at the Waldorf Astoria. In April 2013 Qandeel’s painting, The Failure, sold for a record-breaking $57,000 at Sotheby’s contemporary auction in Qatar, and most recently, The Enemy Within, a bold, neo-expressionist self-portrait, sold for $209,000 by the famed auction house. These auctions, hosted by an eminently western corporation, are symptomatic of a broader cultural movement in the Middle

By Nathaniel Goehring East. Qandeel, 26, explains that 70% of Saudi Arabia’s population is now between the ages 15 to 35, and that this sector is inundated with western culture from sources such as the television network OSN, which broadcasts the likes of Keeping Up With the Kardashians into Saudi homes. He emphasizes the purchasing power of young people and rising investment into art as a new class asset as some reasons for his success. In the context of a recent construction boom, Qandeel, western-educated since age 10, is exceptionally well-suited to supply the demand from this burgeoning demographic. Like a shrewd businessman he recognizes that, “The market is untapped. Young people in Saudi Arabia want modern art for their modern homes for their modern lives.” After studying at prestigious schools in the UK, including the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Qandeel attended the University of Kansas before moving to New York City in 2010. Qandeel arrived to what he considers “the capital of the US” with little money and no fame while Jacob Arabo, jeweler to pop

royalty like Jay Z, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga, mentored him. “Jacob the Jeweler” would wake Qandeel up in the morning with phone calls urging him not to waste his day, saying, “Money never sleeps.” He also became Qandeel’s first American client. Last Halloween, the young visionary learned that there are limits to the realm of possibility, earning bad boy cachet and a night in jail for painting a mural on the walls of the swanky penthouse suite at the 6 Columbus Hotel. Qandeel is currently painting a new series, planning a show in London, and working on a development project boasting at least eight buildings, featuring a high-end gallery of foreign and local artists, complete with an organic supermarket and a production studio for photography and music. “I can definitely see myself getting more involved with real estate,” he says. “I want to build a tower where every apartment is unique.” For now, though, Qandeel will settle for his most recent commission from the owner of the world’s tallest penthouse apartment at 432 Park Avenue. Money never sleeps, indeed.

Family, Football and Philanthropy Nicole DiCocco Leads the Charge for The H.O.P.E. Foundation For a Better Tomorrow By Isaiah Negron

T

here are few things in life stronger than a family who bands together in the face of tragedy to help others. Frank DiCocco, a highly respected 29-year-old football coach worked with inner city youth that needed encouragement and guidance both on and off the field. After his untimely death in 2011, his sister, Nicole, along with her parents, Kathy and Lou DiCocco, turned their pain into a quest to continue Frank’s legacy and work. “As a football coach, my brother realized that many of his team members went home to single parent families that offered very little support,” Nicole remembers. “I want to take what he started and bring it into fruition.” From there, the family started the H.O.P.E. Foundation For a Better Tomorrow, a non-profit organization which stands for: Helping Other People Excel, by funding scholarships, sponsoring after school programs and providing character development programs to schools with limited resources. “My motivation is really to be my brother’s memory keeper,” Nicole confides. The REAL Man Program, a character development program written by her brother Frank, aims to teach young men how to respect women as well as themselves, by using the game of football as a reference point. “The program is especially poignant at a time rife with violence in the NFL,” she adds. A former debutante, Nicole broke out of her bubble and took the helm in honor of her brother, forging a new path where she learned about football, charity, and the importance of helping the underprivileged. “New York has a wonderful circuit of galas that raise money for various charities, but rarely do the participants have the opportunity to work with the actual people they are helping,” she admits. “Now I’m using my skills to closely work with the children we have invested in, trekking to the PS 5 elementary school in Harlem to sit with the children, watching them grow into mature and considerate individuals.” The most rewarding experiences have come from students using the program in everyday life. Last month, the Rogers Morning News in Arkansas ran a story about a vivacious 8th grader who was slapped by a girl on the bus ride home. His first thought was to hit back but the REAL Man lesson kicked in and he stopped himself. Partnering with Hartford’s Camp Courant, the oldest and largest summer camp program in America, the foundation launched a platform using The REAL Man Character Development Program. “We have been able to engage so many people to share in what my brother envisioned,” she reveals. “Last year, the foundation awarded 11 scholarships, sent seven children to Camp Courant and disseminated 16,000 copies of the REAL MAN program to need-based schools nationwide. In 2015, Nicole and her parents aim to further spread Frank’s character development program across the country and provide even more scholarships. “One hundred percent of the money we raise goes to the foundation and our scholarships, with the day to day operating expenses being underwritten by the DiCocco family.” For more information: hopefoundation.us

The Beauty Expert S

ince 1982, Berenice Rothenberg has been enhancing the natural beauty of Manhattanites through non invasive techniques in the heart of the city. A pioneer in the electrolysis industry, Berenice has always kept abreast of the most cutting edge technology in laser hair removal, cellulite reduction, and LED light therapy to bring out the best of her loyal clientele. Her latest innovation is the Vela Shape 3 cellulite treatment and circumferential reduction treatment that provides effective and noticeable results without the risk of invasive surgery treatments. Vela Shape works with bi-polar radio frequency and light energies – known as elos™ technology – to precisely target and heat fatty tissues within the treated area. In addition, gentle suction and massaging action evens out the skin revealing a smoother, firmer and tighter appearance and the feeling is like a warm deep tissue massage. It’s safe enough to use on your mid range, torso, legs, buttocks and even your chin and neck to contour, reshape and slim the body by improving cellulite while reducing circumference. Here Resident speaks with Berenice about this revolutionary new treatment and its effectiveness.

Who would be best suited for this treatment?

It’s a wonderful treatment especially for people who want to tighten up their skin and

contour the body. It helps to firm and shape the body while burning cellulite and burning fat deposits that exercise can’t get rid of. You don’t have to worry about bruising your skin because it works with your body’s temperature and it’s non invasive. There’s no downtime and people feel like it’s a warm massage. How many treatments yield the best results?

You really need six treatments. Also you must drink a lot of water, because all of the fat burned goes through your lymphatic system.

We’ve seen a lot of great results already of people going down one size. Like anytime you are losing weight, you also have to watch what you are eating. It really improves the areas diet and exercise can’t reach and is also comfortable and safe. Also the Vela Shape 3 has really improved from the previous two predecessors. You can now really concentrate on the areas that bother you like your chin, stomach, knees, buttocks, waist. This is a big difference from any of the weight loss lasers that we had before. Which areas have seen the most drastically improved results?

The stomach, thighs, and buttocks, as the skin in those areas also becomes a lot smoother and firmer after the treatment. But if people don’t want the downtime and risk of invasive surgery they also have to work at it too with exercise and diet. For more information: bereniceelectrolysis.com

O

The Perfect Pout By Rafael G. Magana, M.D.

ne of the most attractive features of a beautiful face is a set of full and healthy lips. They are a synonymous with youth when robust, and a sign of aging as they become thinner and descend with time in part due to the relentless effects of gravity. Many theories as to the reason behind the attractiveness of lips have emerged over the years, but there are objective findings that are self evident in a set of beautiful lips.

6 Characteristics of Beautiful Lips: -Full and robust lips -Healthy uniform surface with good hydration -A distinct Cupids Bow with a defined Vermillion Border -A ratio of lower to upper lip consistent with the golden number “Phi” -The lower lip is normally fuller than the upper lip -Symmetry The upper lip should ideally project approximately 2 mm beyond the lower lip, which, in turn, projects 2 mm beyond the most anterior portion of the chin. The inclination of the lower lip is determined by its fullness, which also affects the appearance of the chin. It is important to inject the lips so as to maintain the ski-jump edge of the upper lip when augmenting. This anatomical point is known as the Glogau–Klein point or G-K point for short. Aging changes the proportions of the lips as they descend and become thinner. There are a variety of methods for lip augmentation available in the arsenal of the cosmetic plastic surgeon. Although no fillers are currently approved by the FDA for lip augmentation, use of nonpermanent fillers such as Hyaluronic Acid (HA), is common. HA has the advantage of producing few side effects

48 • Resident February 2015

and being temporary, lasting up to a year. Permanent solutions with methylmethacrylate (PMMA) and ophtalmic grade silicone are also available, but are not as widely used. These permanent fillers may produce secondary complications such as granulomas, which may require excision (removal) via surgery or liposuction. Fat grafting has gained popularity because it is autologous (from one’s own body) and gives much longer lasting effects. During your initial consult you should ask everything you can about the procedure, make sure your plastic surgeon addresses any concern you may have regarding lip augmentation. Common questions are related to the shape and size of the augmentation, “Is the procedure painful?” “How long will it take to recover and for the swelling to go down?” In addition to asking questions, most cosmetic plastic surgeons will evaluate the general health of the patient and take pre-procedure photographs and measurements of your lips. Always tell your surgeon what medications you take, especially any that may be considered

blood thinners, such as aspirin. A mirror should be used for the patient to point out any areas of concern to be addressed on the lips. Make sure that your expectations of the procedure are congruent with what the procedure can provide. Always ask your surgeon what he/she recommends and what you should expect. Although in the scheme of things, lip augmentation is a smaller less invasive procedure than surgery, it will require some downtime afterward. This is something to consider in the busy hustle and bustle of NYC. I recommend 3-4 days to allow the local swelling to subside. Unfortunately, not all practitioners are familiar with what conforms to a natural youthful appearance of attractive lips. Simply adding volume to the lips often yields displeasing cosmetic results. Technical knowledge as well as a deep understanding of the regional anatomy is needed to achieve a good result. In addition to the previously mentioned, realistic expectations are equally important. Voluptuous lips are a very desirable trait, but the key to a successful outcome for maximum effect consists in applying “just enough” volume in just the right places. The safe approach to augmenting lips in terms of a natural appearance consists in being conservative. In this particular procedure, sometimes “less is more.” The key is to always augment the lips with the aim to get a natural appearance... no more and no less. HOW TO GET FIT AND LOSE WEIGHT THROUGH PROPER EXERCISE T

here are millions of city folks who primarily walk for fitness thinking that they are receiving enough fitness and health benefits to improve cardiovascular efficiency and are frustrated that their bodies have not changed for the better. In fact, there are many people who walk five miles a day who are still not fit, nor do they ever attain the body they desire. In order to receive enough health and heart benefits, it’s the intensity (how hard we’re working) that dictates our improvements to our overall fitness and hence, our cardiovascular system as well. So, I’ve enlisted the expertise of NYC’s top fitness expert Edward Jackowski, Ph.D. and the author of seven books on fitness & motivation and whose firm Exude Fitness, www.exude.com is located right here in Manhattan. Edward says “I’m not saying for people to stop walking. What I’m trying to get everyone to realize is that WALKING can be one aspect, one part of “fitness.” In fact, NO ONE exercise in and of itself is considered fitness. Walking is a form or mode of aerobic exercise, but you still need to address ALL the components of fitness in order to become truly fit and make your heart stronger and burn enough calories in

50 • Resident February 2015

By Jordan Gelber

order to lose weight. The five components that comprise fitness are; aerobic capacity, muscle endurance, muscle strength, flexibility and body ratio. Not only do these five components have to be present each and every time you exercise, you must improve or increase in each of these areas in order to keep receiving the health and fitness benefits that fitness offers.” In order to derive heart and aerobic benefits during exercise, you need to be exercising within 65 – 85% of your maximum heart rate for at least 20-30 minutes, 3-5 days per week. So, if you’re 40 years old, that means you need to be working (exercising) hard enough to sustain a heart rate of 220 – 40 = 180 X .60 to 180 X .85 which means that your heart rate needs to be beating at least 117 Beats Per Minute (BPM) to 153 BPM in order to derive both cardiovascular and fitness benefits. That’s why when you walk to and from work every day or take a leisurely stroll, unless you’re sweating, it is doing very little if anything to help strengthen your cardiovascular system. And, it will do even less to help your overall fitness level as well. Please also remember Edward says, “that as you become more fit and your aerobic capacity improves, you also need to workout

at the higher end towards the 85% because your system is now stronger and it will now take less energy and work to perform the same exercise today than it did let’s say a few months ago.” For example, if you bike or jog a few miles and your heart rate when you first started out and averaged 140 BPM, now, a few months later, that same jog only gets your heart rate up to 120 BPM, you now are more aerobically fit and as a result, need to either increase your speed of jogging, incline and/or time (duration) to get your heart rate back up to 140 BPM. If you stay at 120BPM, you also will not burn as many calories, so increasing your intensity is a vital component to improving your aerobic capacity and strengthening your heart as well. Below, please find the Best Exercises to improve your cardiovascular system and to lose weight: Jumping rope, Jogging/running, Cross country skiing, Stationary biking, Swimming, Rowing, Stairmaster And don’t forget to get your physician’s approval before performing these or any exercises. Latest Innovations In Hair Restoration Surgery

T

By W. A. Muller

he latest procedures offered at True & Dorin are: Follicilar Unit Transplantation (FUT- aka the strip method), Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy with Acell (PRP/Acell), Eyebrow and Beard Transplants. Dr. Robert Dorin has over 12 years of experience in the medical arts of hair loss. During this time he has treated thousands upon thousands of men and women suffering from hair loss. At his Manhattan clinic he employs the latest innovations available in modern day hair restoration. His stellar reputation is a result of his careful orchestration of cutting edge medical technology and mastery of surgical aesthetics executed with the highest standards of medical ethics. Dr. Dorin routinely performs the gold standard follicular unit transplantation (FUT- aka: Strip method) as well as the newer minimally invasive Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method with fidelity, resulting in consistent natural aesthetic results that can not be distinguished from native hair, even under close inspection. The minimally invasive FUE technique, not only causes no postoperative surgical discomfort to speak of, and does not create a liner confluent scar as in the traditional FUT procedure; but allows Dr. Dorin to utilize donor hair beyond the traditional donor scalp hair and includes beard, and chest hair in selected patients. This is also Dr. Dorin’s go to method when he performs eyebrow transplants in men and women looking to enhance or replace lost eyebrow hair for various reasons or when replacing and changing the contour of small regions of lost beard hair. Dr. Dorin explains that his consistent natural results are not only obtained by his meticulous attention to medical and artistic detail, but by the utilization of Bio enhanced technology that enhances the survival, healing and earlier growth of the grafts. The grafts that are obtained from the permanent donor hair on the side and back of the scalp, are temporarily placed in holding solutions that keep the grafts alive until they are placed back into the targeted thinning region. Pioneering Pleasure W

e’re not what you expected. Far from the seedy adult book stores with blacked-out windows and ancient carpeting, The Pleasure Chest is a chic and welcoming adult boutique that has found a home on the Upper East Side. Called the “Sephora of sex toys” by the Wall Street Journal, we make shopping for your sex life a fun, stress-free, and even glamorous experience. This month, we partnered with Jimmyjane, the creators of design-centric pleasure products, to unveil “Pioneering Pleasure,” an installation that showcases the innovative efforts that both of our companies have made over the years. Pioneering Pleasure highlights the major cultural and category milestones that have helped bring pleasure products a positive, mainstream spotlight. The exhibit also celebrates the release of Jimmyjane’s newest offering, Hello Touch X, the first product to put both vibration and electro stimulation at your fingertips, for sexual health benefits as well as pleasure applications. Guests who visit us during the Pioneering Pleasure exhibition, open from now through February 28th, can interact with Jimmyjane’s entire collection in an inviting atmosphere. “Jimmyjane’s elegant, versatile designs reflect the values that

have shaped The Pleasure Chest,” says Sarah Tomchesson, our Director of Business Development and Strategy. “They’re extremely wellmade, but more than that, they’re alluring. They invite experimentation.” This is a remarkable time in our industry: pleasure is being recognized as an integral part of our overall health, Fifty Shades of Grey has brought conversations about sexuality to mainstream audiences, and customers now seek out high-quality pleasure products. Even before the recent shift, both Jimmyjane and The Pleasure Chest have consistently been leaders in our field. Since 2004, Jimmyjane has leveraged design and innovation to el-

evate the pleasure product category, setting a new standard for modern aesthetics, quality designs, and body safe materials. As the oldest operating adult boutique, The Pleasure Chest has been promoting education and a shame-free approach to sex since 1971. From our appearance on Sex and the City that introduced women everywhere to the Rabbit to our free weekly workshops and private home parties on topics from blow jobs to body confidence, we’ve been at the forefront of a movement to make pleasure accessible to everyone. “The idea for Hello Touch X came after the wave of excitement around Fifty Shades of Grey where we saw couples exploring new experiences in the bedroom. Jimmyjane’s approachable presentation of e-stim is an invitation to explore an entirely new sensation,” observed Alicia Sinclair, Jimmyjane’s VP of Worldwide Sales and Business Development. With Valentine’s Day approaching, this is the perfect time to explore something new. What better way to celebrate love and desire than to discover something you didn’t know that you wanted? In 1783, the Montgolfier Brothers launched the world’s first hot air balloon. In 1903, the Wright Brothers invented the first fully powered airplane – a feat that would revolutionize warfare, commerce, travel, technology and society as a whole. More recently, another set of talented siblings, the Kassir Brothers, joined forces to create one of the most all-encompassing approaches to rejuvenation and quality in living - their comprehensive practice employing everything from plastic and cosmetic surgery to dermatology to a full range of laser treatments. With a myriad of state-of-the-art procedures, the Kassirs are qualified to undertake everything from the most complex surgical reconstructions to Ultherapy. Most importantly, because of their scope and range, patients are ensured receiving unbiased advice as regards task-appropriate procedures. As triple board certified Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Ramtin Kassir explains, “we are just as adept at non-invasive procedures as we are with complex surgeries. Patients should feel comfortable with any plan from the onset.” At present, the ‘Brothers Kassir’ are expanding their office and looking forward to a grand opening. As a plastic surgeon that has carved out a niche - no pun intended - in New York, Dr. Ramtin Kassir is renowned for taking both ethnicity and structural type into account. Having worked all over the world, Kassir is not only familiar with ethinic differences but knows how awkward results can be when plastic surgeons with a limited repertoire superimpose the aesthetics of one culture onto another. The brothers not only collaborate clinically when it comes to patient care, but also scientifically. They have co-authored scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals on Botox and Dysport, filler substances and IPL devices.

As Kassir admits, “Besides our professional acumen, people like us because we are easy to communicate with. I’ve traveled to over 50 countries and I know there are major differences between ethnicities, cultures and aesthetic predilections. Recently I surmised that a patient visiting from California must be from somewhere in Southern Africa. It turned out she was from Zimbabwe. Recognizing these distinctions is very important to an aesthetic understanding of what is a perfect look for a certain type of face. It’s also culturally important to be aware of differences because people that arrive from different corners of the globe are looking for different kinds of results. In New York, the best kind of plastic surgery is one that makes you look younger and better but is still so subtle that people can barely tell you’ve had any work done. This is what most New Yorkers want – for others not to notice they’ve had surgery at all but to just casually look like their appearance has improved. It’s a very mind oriented culture here. This is unlike California where it’s okay to resurrect one’s appearance entirely – Bruce Jenner, Burt Reynolds…cases in point. In Iran it’s different again. It’s less about the actual change than the ability to afford change. People who haven’t even had any surgery will put tape on their nose just to look like they’ve come out of an operation. In a sense, surgery for them is a means of self-expression. In Brazil, it’s more about the body. Even by your early twenties it’s not unlikely to have had work done on your breasts or butt.” Since Dr. Ramtin Kassir has been called in often enough to repair the mistakes of earlier surgeons, he is aware how unappealing an overdone look can be. “There is a golden ratio,” explains Kassir, “Appreciation for this mathematical ratio is programmed into our DNA – meaning, even when we are not aware of it, it’s something we unconsciously find pleasing. That’s why we like structures such as the Parthenon, the Golden Triangle, the

Golden Rectangle…I mean all this is the left side of our brain seeking the mathematically perfect construct, the symmetry in proportions. Then there’s the right side of our brain that tells us how something looks or emotionally pleases us. Likewise when I work as a plastic surgeon it is both my ability as a 3D sculptor and my scientific knowledge that guides my hands and is responsible for the choices I make. It’s never just a question of shortening something or attenuating an individual component. You constantly have to take the entirety of the person into account. You don’t just shorten a nose – you have to know how the new dimensions will look in relation to the rest of the face. What the new distances between body parts will be. There is no such thing as working on one part in isolation from the whole.”

64 • Resident February 2015

In case someone has any doubt about procedures that don’t take the totality of proportions into account, all someone needs do is look at Renée Zellweger’s recent foray into the world of rejuvenation. “Technically,” explains Kassir, “The surgeon involved actually performed a decent bythe-book operation. The problem is he altered her overall appearance making her unrecognizable. The procedure changed the look she’s had since she was 20. The reason: she has heavy eyelids and that is a distinct part of her appearance. If you cut all that eyelid skin out, which I suspect is what happened, it entirely alters her overall presence. Zellweger, Kenny Rogers – they are examples of people who looked beautiful in their 20’s. They both have naturally heavy eyelids. So by the time they reach 50, you don’t want to cut all the skin out

around the eyes because you end up drastically altering their features. During CNN story done on Renee, no one recognized her “after” photo. The idea behind a good plastic surgery is to maintain a natural look, maintaining all that which makes you distinct. The premise is to help recreate a younger version of yourself rather than create a different person.” When asked about their clients, Dr. Ramtin Kassir was quite precise: “Rhinoplasty – the average comes out to twenty three and a half year old female, injectables – late 30 early 40’s, mini-lifts are 52 year old females, full facelift – 56 and up. 60% are from the tri-state area, the rest are from other states or abroad – these are usually people who have scoured the Internet and specially sought us out because of our

creativity and style. If you’re a man you’re usually getting your nose or hairline done. The fact is that people are starting to understand that there is no longer any stigma associated with plastic surgery. Those that do opt to undergo the procedures soon learn that they not only come out feeling a lot better but no one even suspects its been done. Facelifts, nose jobs, eyelid lifts, brow lifts, chin implants, ear pinning – the list of procedures we are experts in is quite extensive. Besides this, we also do the complete range of laser techniques. Some of our newest procedures include fat freezing, which can eliminate fat cells without any invasive procedure. We have a myriad of lasers - each with its very distinct function. This is where my brother Martin comes into the picture.” As fate would have it, the name Ramtin in Persian implies someone with great creative talent, ambition and determination. And, as you probably guessed by now, Ramtin is an anagram for Martin. Clearly their parents were on to something. The brothers’ talents complement one another perfectly. Martin is not only a brilliant dermatologist with exceptional skill in laser technology but he trains doctors world over to use lasers as well having come up with a line of skin care products. “I’ve travelled to 92 countries and lectured in six continents and in over 35 countries,” confides Martin Kassir. “As a dermatologist,” he continues, “I designed a cream that in its very first year sold over 15 million dollars and that happens to be associated with a char-

ity that nourishes underprivileged children on 3 different continents. Besides treating patients, I spend lots of my time lecturing and teaching healthcare professionals.” Having spent time in virtually ever corner of the globe, Martin, like his brother, is familiar with all different types of genetic groupings. As he explains, “this kind of experience is invaluable when it comes to treating different skin types and diseases. And when you look at a city like New York– which is basically a potpourri of types and ethnicities, the knowledge I have comes in very handy. All the different skin types with various cultural backgrounds are found in New York City; and each requires very different and specific forms of treatment. Let’s just say the city offers me the opportunity of a lifetime in being able to put to use what I know. Understanding these differences is actually essential when using lasers. In fact, I have my very own laser school, Worldwide Laser Institute, where I train doctors and other medical professionals on proper use of laser technology. As the former VP and present member of the Board of Directors of the International Society of Dermatology, Martin is the Chairman of a Mentorship Program wherein dermatologists from underprivileged countries get placements with experts world over so they can return to their own countries equipped with a better understanding of their field. Being a double board certified in dermatology and internal medicine, Martin possesses a unique level of understanding when it comes to non-invasive procedures such as laser, botox, fillers and other nuanced techniques such as radiofrequency, microneedling and non-ablative fractional resurfacing which helps aging and wrinkles by thickening collagen levels. He also practices LED treatment for acne and inflammation and IPL photofacials for sun damage, age spots, broken capillaries,

telangiectasias, benign brown pigments and rosacea. “You can understand why we’re expanding,” says Ramtin. “With all the surgery, consults, and 28 different types of lasers and other devices we outgrew our space. Now we will have a separate surgical side and non-surgical side with recovery rooms and spa and the overall feel will be a lot more serene”. As doctors with an aesthetic eye, the brothers take a very special interest in overseeing the design of their new Park Avenue venue. “The vast majority of people,” explains Ramtin, “want surgery but are afraid so they often opt for nonsurgical methods. Their justification seems to be that surgery is too vain and not need-based; but then they have a lot of other noninvasive procedures done. Some are simply afraid of anesthesia or coming out looking “done” like Michael Jackson. Then they start to rationalize ‘shouldn’t I be saving this money for my kid’s tuition’… but mostly it’s still just wariness because in terms of money, the results usually pay off in dividends because people end up doing their job more effectively because they’re more confident.” As artists in their field, the Kassirs bring to mind yet a final set of local brothers, namely, the Gershwins. Whether it means understanding the importance of having ‘Someone to Watch Over Me’ or simply appreciating the unique quality of a ‘Sunny Funny Face,’ the criteria for individualized care is a constant. But unlike Ira and George, in the case of Martin and Ramtin, it is probably the patients who end up singing: “The way you hold your knife… the way you changed my life. No, no they can’t take that away from me.” For more information: 799 Park Avenue 212.288.3000 drkassir.com

The Quantum Class R

edefining the cruising experience and creating quite a buzz in the nautical world, Royal Caribbean’s recently debuted Quantum of the Seas is nothing short of a majestically luxurious floating mega-resort. At 1,141 feet long, Quantum of the Seas is the first in Royal Caribbean’s new Quantum class of vessels and can comfortably accommodate up to 4,905 guests. Touted as the world’s first smartship, Quantum of the Seas is the most high-tech cruise ship yet, boasting the fastest internet speeds at sea using a new generation of mid-Earth orb satellites and innovative technology. And keeping in tune with the times, the new Royal iQ app allows you to track luggage, book shore excursions, make dining reservations and secure a seat for one of the enthralling shows offered at The Royal Theater and the two-story Music Hall. If you leave your room key behind, rest assured your provided wristbands can open stateroom doors and allow you to charge onboard purchases. You can even use it to order a custom cocktail at the first ever Bionic Bar, where robotic arms prepare drinks while a DJ stationed nearby adds to the trendy cool vibe. Upon entering the stately ship, it’s hard not to be impressed by the airy high ceilings and the ship’s sheer grandeur and modernity which is perfectly lavished with a

$5-million, 3,000-piece art collection, including a strikingly extensive butterfly wall and onboard galleries. The muted earth tone carpets and dark woods are offset by glass and soft pastel accents and modern sophisticated designs. With so many activities and spaces to explore, this 16-deck floating city will certainly keep you entertained, even a week-long cruise might not be enough to take it all in. The firstever-at-sea options such as RipCord by iFLY, a skydiving simulator as well as a 40-foot-long FlowRider surf simulator, must not be missed. One of Quantum’s most striking features is the unique North Star, a jewel-like glass observation capsule suspended from a giant cranelike arm that lifts you 300 feet above sea level, offering 360-degree panoramic views of the ocean. A visit to SeaPlex, the largest indoor

active space at sea, will keep you busy for days and includes a trapeze, basketball court as well as bumper cars, roller skating and a food truck. Packed full of an array of lounges, bars and restaurants to rival the biggest resorts of Las Vegas, Quantum offers an option for every possible kind of craving. Their “dynamic dining” is a new concept that allows for more options and flexibility, moving away from large-scale dining rooms with set dining times in favor of 18 smaller but distinct dining experiences: from Silk, a pan-Asian concept to The Grande, a more formal classic European establishment, to American Icon Grill which features regional comfort food to the more traditional buffet, Windjammer Marketplace. Food connoisseurs should reserve a table at one of Quantum’s signature restaurants that require an additional fee and feature celebrity chefs and new concepts such as: Michael’s Genuine Pub, from Miami’s Michael Schwartz, British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s Italian creations, and Biggest Loser chef Devin Alexander’s health conscious menu at Devinly Decadence. Monkey Around at the Four Seasons, Nevis

hile most visitors come to the exotic Caribbean island of Nevis in the West Indies to relax and bask in the sun, others come for fun and outdoor adventure. Although Nevis is a small island and considerably more chilled out than its sister island, St. Kitts, it’s filled with an abundance of activity where you can hike a challenging volcano one day and practice your golf swing the next. The Four Seasons Resort, Nevis allows guests the option of either relaxing in “do nothing” mode all day or enjoying adventurous activities from sunrise to sunset. Dotted along the water’s edge on beautiful Pin-

ney’s Beach, The Four Seasons Resort is sandwiched between the shores of the Caribbean and the majestic Nevis Peak volcano. The

resort serves up 10 tennis courts, 3 pools, an 18-hole signature golf course, a fitness center and Spa. And, if that’s not enough to keep you busy, there are running paths and water sports galore. Tackling their clearly marked running trails, which the resort has conveniently rated from easy to difficult, is one of my favorite activities in the early morning hours. The trails take you around the entire golf course and through a stretch of tropical jungle (complete with monkey sightings) including steep elevation gains that allow for sweeping views of the sea and nearby St. Kitts. It might be my favorite running course in all of the Car-

ibbean. The resort’s water sports offered at the Four Seasons range from a certified 2-day sailing school to scuba diving, stand-up paddling and kayaking. Dining can be turned into a physical activity as well with the resort’s one-of-a-kind “Dive and Dine” program. Forgo your best dinner attire, slip into a wet suit and take to the water with Executive Chef Jason Adams and a local dive master to catch yourself a spiny lobster. A subsequent beach barbeque will ensue as you and Chef Adams prepare your catch for an unforgettable dining experience under the stars. You can also opt to channel your inner professional photographer and go monkey around for some great photo ops with the island’s resident African Green Vervet monkeys. You can enjoy close encounters with hordes of these creatures around 4:30pm every day when they seem to assemble for their own town hall

meeting at the 15th hole of the resort’s golf course. Afterwards, the resort’s Spa is the perfect place to unwind and try a treatment from their new menu of services in partnership with THÉ-

MAÉ from France. Additionally, the Spa’s new herb garden houses medicinal plants such as lemongrass, basil, rosemary, sage and aloe used in some of their treatments and teas. Lastly, in the evening, play at Sunshine’s bar and grill located just a quick walk up the beach from the Four Seasons. Be careful of their potent “Killer Bee” rum punch, which can quickly transform you from a visiting tourist to a local Reggae singer but might have you singing the blues the following morning. From New York City the Four Seasons Resort, Nevis is accessible via a nonstop flight (Saturdays only) to St. Kitts or daily connecting flights through either Miami or San Juan directly into St. Kitts. You’ll then be met by a resort representative who will whisk you away to their private ferry service for the 25-minute ride to paradise. For more information: fourseasons.com/nevis/

RIDE ON THE PEACE TRAIN The Rocky Mountaineer W

hen springtime hits the Canadian Rockies, winter ice cracks and beauty breaks free. The sky turns a sharp clear sapphire color, white mountain peaks sparkle in the sun and eagles glide on the wind. And perhaps nowhere on earth can one get a better view of such wonders than from the glass-domed observation car of the Rocky Mountaineer. This luxury passenger train, chugging through the Canadian high country cutting across the Great Divide, offers riders the most scenic and serene trip they may ever take. Rail travel has long been considered the most civilized and ro-

mantic way to see the world, and this train doesn’t disappoint as it gives guests a frontrow view of North America’s most breathtaking scenery. The Rocky Mountaineer, which

has received the World Travel award for being the “World’s Leading Travel Experience by Train,” also garnered accolades from National Geographic, which calls it one of the “World’s Greatest Trips.” However, its real romantic allure is the way it allows modern-day visitors to travel Canada from coast-to-coast along the same historic trail that early explorers and settlers took more than 100 years ago, a route spanning lands that, for the most part, have remained untouched since then. Because the entire Rocky Mountaineer voyage takes place during daylight hours, those aboard never miss a moment of the

route’s astonishing scenery, including glacierfed lakes, high mountain ranges and rushing rivers. Guests see elk, deer, mountain goats, osprey and eagles, and, if they’re lucky, even bears. The other beauty of this train trip is that riders have days to unplug from technology and connect with nature from the comfort of a cozy train car. How civilized to sip champagne an nibble on scones while keeping watch for bald eagles and black bear? Before I boarded the Rocky Mountaineer in the little resort town of Banff, I enjoyed a 4-day driving trip through the Canadian province of Alberta. There I first began my adventure in the capital city of Edmonton, where I dined in stylish bistros, visited its Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, and took a River Valley Adventure Segway tour along the glacier-fed North Saskatchewan River. Stopping in the little mountain town of Jasper, in Jasper National Park, I stayed at the Jasper Park Lodge Fairmont in a cabin-like suite overlooking a teal mountain lake beside a large timber-lined lodge. In Jasper, I enjoyed a motorcycle sidecar tour of Jasper National Park’s steep mountain passes

and scenic roads and took the Jasper Tramway on 3,000-foot ride up the side of Whistler’s Mountain. I also saw many animals in their natural habitat during a guided wildlife tour. The little Alpine-style village of Jasper was also fun to explore, with its candy and fudge shops, brew pubs and restaurants. After getting coffee at Bears Paw Bakery, I left for Lake Louise, driving a rental car down the most scenic highway in the world—the Icefield Parkway, and stopped to see the new Glacier Skywalk, a 1,475-foot long glass walkway jetting out high above the Sunwapta Valley and

facing the Athabasca Glacier situated in an icefield straddling the Continental Divide. I also went on an Ice Explorer excursion onto the surface of the Athabasca Glacier. On this driv, I got a taste of the scenery that lay in store for me on the Rocky Mountaineer trip, as well as a glimpse of the luxury that the Fairmont properties in Banff, Vancouver and Seattle would offer along the Rocky Mountaineer route. The Chateau Lake Louise hotel, where I stopped next, was perhaps my favorite Fairmont. The historic property was built in 1911 to serve guests along the transcontinental line of the Canadian Pacific Railway. My suite held high views of Lake Louise, which still lay below a cover of ice and spring snow. An in-house nature guide escorted my friends and me on a magical winter walk. In the evening, we dined at the Walliser Stube restaurant and wine bar, known for its authentic Swiss fondue. From Lake Louise, we made the short drive to Banff where we stayed at another historic Fairmont property. Designed to resemble an enormous castle, the Banff Springs Fairmont is one of the largest

and most impressive of all the Canadian rail hotels. Constructed in 1888 in an ornate Scottish Baronial style, it stands amid the splendors of Banff National Park. There I enjoyed a luxury stay in a two-story suite inside one of the castle’s turrets before finally departing at dawn for my unforgettable Rocky Mountaineer adventure. As my friends and I boarded the 21-coach Rocky Mountaineer, we noted that we were among the youngest travelers, but we soon found that on board were well-traveled interesting international guests with good stories and great senses of humor. Service on the Rocky Mountaineer is exceptional, and so is the cuisine. The first day began with coffee, mimosas and hot scones. At lunch in the dining area, we enjoyed first-class cuisine from executive chef Frederic Couton, who was kind enough us to have a peek at his galley kitchen. Our chosen route took us from Banff, with an overnight stay in a modest motel in Kamloops (a town of 85,000) and on to Vancouver for two nights before we headed to Seattle, our final destination. En route we passed a valley

86 • Resident February 2015

where the rushing Adams river is full of sockeye salmon during spawning season—a good spot for bear sightings. Along the way we saw bighorn sheep, mountain goats and elk and bald eagles. Hours passed quickly as we watched spring return to the Rockies and waterfalls rush down the stone faces of ancient cliffs. By the time we reached Vancouver, our happy band of rail riders had become a close-knit group, so I invited two new British friends to see the view of the Vancouver harbor from my im-

pressive ultra-modern Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel suite. After exploring Vancouver, I boarded the Rocky Mountaineer one last time for our final all-too-short leg of the trip—the recently added route from Vancouver to Seattle edging the Pacific Northwest coastline. In Seattle, not far from Pikes Market, we stayed in another fine Fairmont property, the historic Olympic Hotel, where we ended our great rail adventure with a last supper in the elegant Georgian Room with its Palladian windows and sparkling chandeliers. There is nothing quite as restful as travel by train, gliding silently through Elysian lands untouched by the modern world. As the Rocky Mountaineer traced the northern passages of native peoples and early explorers, I was struck with a sense of wonder and gratefulness—and an overwhelming desire to one day ride this way again. Brooklyn’s Best L

ocated in Brooklyn on a beautiful treelinked street on Atlantic Avenue, Colonie draws its inspiration from its surrounding neighborhoods always supporting local purveyors as much as possible. Since opening in February 2011, this Brooklyn Heights restaurant has not shown signs of slowing down both with their service and cuisine, and will probably continue to thrive as it was a welcomed addition to an area that was lacking in the inventive cuisine department. The menu here is a collection of American dishes with a nod to NYC’s Dutch colonization, carrying over this theme into their name as well; Colonie instead of Colony and Bruijkleen instead of Brooklyn. It’s a favorite brunch spot for this gentrified neighborhood as well as the perfect date-night dinner spot. The décor of the restaurant itself is quite appealing from its wood ceiling to a very cool herb-garden wall, patrons can sip and mingle while waiting for their table, which is likely to happen on most nights. Chef Andrew Whitcomb, who worked his way up from line cook here, has done his best to

create an inventive seasonal menu using only the freshest ingredients from sustainable farmers. Some favorites are the Leek and Gruyere scramble and the Biscuit Benedict with duck hash. The burger is also a huge hit here, and

why wouldn’t it be with grass-fed beef topped with cheddar, bacon, and fried duck egg, finished off with their famous beet ketchup. For dessert, be sure to try their freshly baked Doughnuts and Sticky Date Cake. If you’d like a more savory dessert, there is an amazing cheese plate available. Not as inventive as their menu, the cocktail list still delivers the goods and has something for everyone from a sparkling Lambrusco, a selection of crafted beers and tried and true cocktails with a twist. Colonie offers a vibrant atmosphere along with a meal that is always fresh and satisfying. They accept limited reservations for dinner, however, they observe a “no reservation” policy for brunch although you’ll more than enjoy the time waiting for a table sipping cocktails beneath that beautiful herb wall.

y creating a turn of the century tale of friendship and a shared lifelong passion of individual pursuits to a better life, Louis and Chan evokes the many facets of its locale from the gritty history of the Lower East side coupled with the cultural intersection of Little Italy and Chinatown. One part Italian trattoria and one part Asian opium den, this bi level Lower East Side hotspot blends Old World charm with a New World Italian menu featuring vibrant and fresh flavors. Step back in time to the Prohibition Era, in an atmospheric dining room created by the dark muddled burgundy walls, cognac leather banquettes, antique mirrors and candlelit sconces and vintage pendant lamps. The menu is whole heartedly Italian based featuring an extensive selection of imported Italian cheeses and salumi, house made pastas, and a range of Neopolitan style pizzas. The starters shine through with unique pairings such as a Gianduja crusted bone marrow with chile and white balsamic jam, foie gras stuffed truffled arancini with fig and brown butter, crispy fried artichokes, lamb meatballs with maple syrup and mint, and burrata pockets with brown buttered dates and chocolate vincotto. The fresh house made pastas feature delectable sauces layered with distinct flavors and spectacular presentations. A house specialty is the Tagliatelle Ricci with sea urchin, caviar and cucumber served in a sea urchin shell. In keeping with the spirit of the Prohibition Era the bespoke cocktails have a vintage Italian flair with hand crafted infusions. ERAI is a contemporary take on fine Greek dining, inviting their guests to sample from an inventive Greek menu. Occupying the old Oceana space in midtown on East 54th street, the owners set out to create a relaxed yet elegant dining experience with comfortable seating and soaring expansive ceilings. The restaurant, two levels of pure sophistication with white furnishings and dark wood, is filed with a soothing light that illuminates the soft white draping cascading down from the high ceilings. The upper level is just as charming with a lively crowd hanging out at the bar and is always filled with a nice mix of people, from the after-work crowd to visiting tourist. Behind the scenes in the kitchen the Executive Chefs are working to capture the nostalgia of Grandma’s cooking, but elevate the dishes using their extensive training and creativity ultimately creating a Greek dining experience refined by their cosmopolitan experiences. The freshest seafood is flown in daily; Lavraki from Greece, Mediterranean Dorado, Black Tiger shrimp from the Pacific, Live Langoustine from Scotland, Fa-

gri from Greece and Live Lobster from Maine. And, while the menu is chock full of seafood, there’s plenty of meat to go around. A boneless rib eye, lamp chop or one of our favorites, the short ribs with slow cooked orzo blended with a graceful tomato confit. All these meat dishes will most definitely satisfy any carnivore in the room. Be sure to begin with a selection of mezes including their chickpea hummus, olives, pita bread or just about any other typical Greek mezes they might offer, especially the grilled octopus.

The cocktail list relies on the flavors of Greece to compliment their handcrafted potent potables. Mixing such flavors as fig, orange and honey into cocktails, they’ve created an inventive offering. A few of our favorites are; The Thymari, a brisk whiskey-inspired drink starting off with Bulleit rye, flavored with thyme, honey, nutmeg and mint; The Mediterraeneo, a traditional Greek favorite created with Figenza vodka, stoupakis mastiha (a silky distilled liqueur with mastigha flavor), cucumber and Italian vermouth; The Date, a vodka concoction with honey and cardamom. Add to this list a wine selection with nearly 40 percent of the wines being Greek and you have yourself a hefty amount of Greek wine and spirits from which to choose. Nerai is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Friday and dinner on Saturday and should be on your must-visit list for either a sophisticated lunch or elegant dinner. They are offering a special Valentine’s Day 5-course Prix Fixe menu for $95.00 with a wine pairing for $55.00. For more information: nerainyc.com

BRINGING Classic Steakhouse Fare to Bleecker Street By W. A. Muller illage Prime, a new temple to modern American cuisine which respects traditional cooking techniques, brings the fresh seafood and fine meats of a classic Uptown steakhouse to a hip downtown setting. Located at 302 Bleecker St, steps from 7th Avenue, Village Prime combines excellently-prepared food with polished service in a chic and ambient space. The menu at Village Prime is balanced between quality prime steak and fresh seafood, with a host of appetizers and entrees that are uncomplicated yet palatepleasing; creative yet non-pretentious. The impressive USDA Prime Meat selection includes the deliciously-juicy Cowboy RibEye, and the Bone-in New York Strip which is wonderfully succulent and chargrilled to perfection. A well-considered selection of gourmet steak sides are perfect partners to go with your chosen cut: caramelized onions, sautéed wild mushrooms, potato gratin, creamed spinach or lobster mac and cheese. The superb interplay of texture and color by Executive Chef Rory O’Farrell is equally camera- and fork-ready. Start your dining experience with appetizers from the ‘Raw Bar’, which offers Market Oysters, Chilled Seafood Tower for two or four, and the ever-popular Tuna Tartare, or with starters such as the Lobster Bisque, French Onion Soup or the sublime Maryland Lump Crab Cake.

The menu’s seafood offerings are equally as enticing. The Chilean Sea Bass, panseared and served with crème fraiche, potato puree, Swiss chard and red wineWorcestershire reduction, is fresh and flavorful, while the Line-caught Swordfish, served with zucchini and Brussel sprout risotto and crispy Brussel sprouts, serves as a lesson in how fish should be cooked. Don’t forget about the dizzying desserts: the Chocolate Lava is smooth and sinfully rich, and the classic Crème Brulée is elegantly presented in a long boat-like dish. Village Prime’s weekend brunch is sure to make fashionable West Village revelers giggle in delight – featuring Cinnamon Pecan French Toast with fresh fruit, mascarpone and vanilla mousse; Steak & Eggs with homemade cast iron potatoes; or the Crab Meat Ciabatta with avocado, watercress and lemon vinaigrette. Better

yet, enjoy your brunch with unlimited champagne for the fixed price of $30. A lengthy cocktail menu features old classics and new creations alike — the Fig Blossom is composed of fig vodka, elderflower, orange juice, and splash of cranberry juice and the Strawberry Bliss is a delightful mix of vanilla vodka, strawberry puree, and basil. There is an extensive wine list, over 30 single malts from notable regions and a wide selection of craft beers. Village Prime’s interior channels the glamour and sophistication of a vintage wine cellar, of which the designer, Lesly Zamor of Seed Design Planning, says he was inspired. The simple, black-and-white exterior stands as a stark contrast to its dimly-lit, ambient interior, particularly in the evening when exposed-filament bulbs emulate candlelight and cast an amber-glow over the front bar and intimate dining room. Unfinished wood and cow-hides line the walls, while walnut tables, leather banquette seating and wild flower arrangements give the restaurant an earthy, rustic feel – reminiscent of a luxury log cabin. Rock Center’s Winter Escape E

scape the cold and enjoy the winter merriment of Rockefeller Center at the Rock Center Café. With an unparalleled vantage on the infamous skating rink, spend the day watching skaters whisk by to top 40 tunes while enjoying classic American fare in a casual and airy setting or warm up with a hot toddy or winter sangria. Open from breakfast to dinner, the Rock Center Café is one of those iconic and quintessential only in NY dining destinations that appeals to both tourists and locals alike. While the menu changes seasonally, start with either a shareable plate of Italian charcuterie or crispy calamari. Other delectable appetizers are the rich and creamy lobster bisque, buratta with speck, and grilled baby octopus, and kale or roasted beet salad for lighter bites. Our favorite was the baked ricotta with crispy culatello, herbed garlic oil, honeycomb and peasant bread. It melted in out mouths and we had to stop ourselves from ordering another helping. of the Northern and Eastern regions of Italy. Specialties such as gemelli with pulled duck

and wild mushroom ragu or the seafood centric black fettuccine with shrimp and a spicy seafood broth highlight his talent in the kitchen. Other satiating dishes on a cold winter’s day are the skirt steak with caramelized bacon and Brussels sprouts and the house specialty burger which is a succulent mixture of DeBragga Black Angus short rib and chuck topped with maple smoked bacon, cheddar, and house made pickles. To end on a sweet note delve into a sinful Valrhona chocolate ganache cake with praline whipped cream or classic NY cheesecake. Each dessert was a sinfully pleasurable way to end this fantastic meal and remember skating your calories off is always an option! A French Charmer T

he French say “pourquoi pas,” the Italians say “perche non,” this universal colloquialism reflects the subliminal power of suggestion that translates across all cultures and languages. At Whynot Bistro, there are plenty of tasty suggestive reasons to dine at this quaint French bistro located in the heart of the West Village on the corner of Christopher and Gay Street. What started as a charming neighborhood coffee shop has now expanded into a French bistro along with a subterranean jazz club inspired by the beatnik days of yore. Bringing a touch of Paris to NYC, the menu specializes in casual yet classic French fare, with live jazz in the evenings to capture the romance and ambience of Paris in the spring. The décor is decidedly French with portraits of famous actresses like Bardot and Deneuve adorning the walls with a cozy yet laid back atmosphere enhanced by exposed brick walls and warm wood tones. A favorite is the classic French staple- the croque that’s made to order.

Start with the monsieur with ham and gruyere, and turn it into a madame with a fried egg, or add fancy toppers such as champignons or smoked salmon. A crowd pleasing favorite is the rich and hearty French onion soup ladled

with melted gruyere that is perfect for a cold winter night. Other bistro starters that we love the French for include the garlicky and butter drizzled escargots, charred octopus salad, foie gras au torchon, and a tangy chicken liver mousse with apples and brandy. Chef Dominic Pepe’s true talent shines through his delectable main courses that are simply prepared and simply delicious such as the grilled lamb chops, filet mignon with truffled potatoes, ratatouille, and the seared sea scallops accented with smoked lardons and truffles. As the French known for their desserts, be sure to save room for their divinely decadent choices where calories don’t count. Choose from a creamy crème brulee, chocolate mousse or a satisfying and rich chocolate soufflé. In keeping with the theme of the restaurant, why not? Public Restaurant

PUBLIC and Saxon + Parole A Winning Combination P

UBLIC and Saxon + Parole restaurants fall under the award winning AvroKO Hospitality Group. PUBLIC, a Michelinstarred restaurant located in NoLiTa, is a swanky establishment where New Zealand Venison and other exotic wild game are meant to inspire and expand its patrons culinary prowess, while Saxon + Parole, located in the East Village, explores traditional grilled domestic meats while infusing a global twist on their dishes. Both restaurants have re-

ceived accolades for their service and cuisine and it’s easy to see why these NYC restaurants are here to stay. Saxon + Parole gets its name by combining two famed racehorses. Saxon, a black racehorse, was the first to wear New York tobacco heir Pierre Lorillard’s signature racing colors of cherry & black. The stallion won the Belmont Stakes in 1874 and sired more winners in retirement. But Saxon’s career paled in comparison to his stable mate: PAROLE. Born in 1873, PAROLE physically looked like not much more than an everyday field horse and no more expected to be a champion than your average stable horse. But he continued to win time and time again, not only in the United States but in the U.K. as well. The English labeled

him the “Yankee Mule,” and often described him as “light-necked ad rough-coated. PAROLE quickly became one of the few American horses ever to win prime English events. When he retired at twelve, he had earned more money than any racehorse in America and inspired a new interest in racing.

Saxon + Parole Restaurant

As previously mentioned, the dinner menu at Saxon + Parole uses domestic meats and seafood with a global spin. Under the direction of Executive Chef, Brad Farmerie the restaurant serves a hearty brunch as well. Chef Farmerie grew up in a food-loving family where he was exposed to a variety of cuisines in a household that insisted on

home baked bread and vegetables straight from the family garden. During college he decided to take a year-long hiatus from studying the principles of physics towards an engineering degree to exploring firsthand the cuisines and wines of Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. This travel inspired Farmerie to follow his love for food to the U.K. when he

earned his “Grand Diplome” at Le Cordon Bleu in 1996. The rest, as they say, is history. His travels have inspired the menu here at Saxon + Parole where ginger, wasabi and tahini make an appearance throughout the dishes. The real prize, however, is the Certified Black Angus beef from Creekstone Farms, Kansas that has been Dry Aged for 28 days and served with bone marrow béarnaise and house made steak sauce. The beverage program has won many accolades including “Best Restaurant Bar” in the 2013 Tales of Cocktail Spirited Awards. Over at PUBLIC you’ll find New Zealand snapper, trout from Tasmania and New Zealand venison. The space at PUBLIC is a bit eclectic as it was once a two-level room that used to be a bakery. The menus presented here are reminiscent of “old school” clipboards. This restaurant in NoLiTa is still hot so many years later with their eclectic menu that straddles the line of Aussie/ Kiwi with a touch of Middle East thrown in. For the adventurous foodies try the Kangaroo Carpaccio, one of our favorites. Be sure to visit PUBLIC on the weekend for their exemplary brunch menu that includes Avocado on toast with lentils, Turk-

ish eggs and a delicious venison burger. Their inventive cocktail menu will be sure to please everyone from the Gin drinkers to the Rye lovers. Their well-curated wine list is renowned with unique offerings from Greece, Lebanon, Hungary and Alsace as well as some of the better-known Australian and New Zealand wines. Both these restaurants should be high on your list for a visit in the near future. You’ll never be disappointed and always be impressed. For more information: public-nyc.com saxonandparole.com

Landmark Office Building Transformed into Luxury Residences By W.A. Muller

M

anhattan’s Financial District, a long-time home to some of Wall Street’s largest companies, is quickly transforming with new residential and hospitality developments. The Compass Lofts is a newly renovated, 10-story adaptive reuse residential and commercial building was previously the showroom and office of Keuffel & Esser, a famous manufacturer of architecture and engineering drafting materials and instruments. The building’s developers, Elie Pariente and Josh Rahmani of EMP Capital Group, tapped architecture firm Colkitt&Co, interior design studio Tamara Eaton Design, Zaskorski & Notaro Architects, New York Design Architects, and others to transform the space into luxury residences. The restored landmark offers seven loft suites that combine historic architecture with modern conveniences. The team strived to restore the landmarked building’s historic integrity, having been built in 1893, while carefully recreating architectural details on the exterior. The facade features ornate, traditional engravings, including some of the original Keuffel & Esser signage. The two-story lobby, designed by Tamara Eaton Design in collaboration with Colkitt&Co, was inspired by a vintage manufacturing theme that nods to the building’s history with touches of romantic

152 •• Resident Resident February November 2014 118 2015

decor. Above the lobby are seven, full floor luxury units - six of which are two-bedroom lofts - offering open floorplans that optimize the space and are accented by distinctive half-moon windows on both the north and south sides of the building. The seventh unit is a duplex penthouse, a new addition to the building, with 1,028 exterior squarefeet spanning two private rooftop decks. Added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 12, 1985, the building is bookended by two streets with the exclusive residence entrance located at 42 Ann Street, and the commercial entrance at 127 Fulton Street. The residences have sweeping views of the Freedom Tower, especially from the

3,444 interior square-foot penthouse suite. Throughout the residential transformation, the building’s rich architectural details such as barrel vaulted ceilings and window engravings are juxtaposed with high-end finishes including energy-efficient Viking and Liebherr appliances, high-gloss kitchen cabinets, hardwood flooring and porcelain countertops. The building also contains a private storage space available to every homeowner, a private keyed elevator, a virtual doorman, humidification systems and radiant heated flooring. Colkitt&Co’s motto, Drawn Together™ gets its meaning from the process rooted in collaboration between people, brands, agencies and communities. Nathan Lee Colkitt and his team at Colkitt&Co worked with Tamara Eaton Design on interior layout modifications in the residential units, and duplex penthouse, as well as worked through code issues to obtain the building’s certificate of occupancy. Colkitt&Co also completed a design and renderings for the duplex penthouse, a unit which will remain unfinished until the space is sold and the new owner decides on custom finishes and furnishings. Endless River Views W

hen my parents- in-law visited from Boston during the holiday season, they wanted to see how much Battery Park City has developed since 9/11. When in Battery Park City, we forgot that were still in Manhattan and this enchanting community became more-and-more captivating. Unexpectedly, Tom and Paula fell in love with Battery Park City’s supreme, yet understated, residential composition. Their strong enthusiasm for Battery Park City’s architecture matched my favor for the thriving neighborhood. Battery Park City has more to offer than most New Yorkers realize. With 36 acres of public parks and gardens, the community offers playgrounds for children of all ages, open lawns for quiet enjoyment, picnic tables and plenty of benches to enjoy the glimmer of the Hudson River. For the more active residents, there is a soccer, basketball, and baseball field and a bike lane that runs

the entire length of the neighborhood along West Street. This flourishing community is also home to twenty acclaimed public sculptures and art installations which are perfectly place throughout The Esplanade. The Museum of Jewish Heritage, Skyscraper Museum, Irish Hunger Memorial and the Police Memorial

are also in Battery Park City. The North Cove Marina, which showcases Mega yachts and appeared in Martin Scorsese’s movie The Wolf of Wall Street, is one of Battery Park City’s main attractions. Gaining popularity, the recently renovated Brookfield Place currently offers fourteen chef-driven eateries, some of which have outdoor dining during the summer. According to its website, in the spring Brookfield Place will house forty world-class stores including Saks Fifth Avenue, Hermes, and Salvatore Ferrogamo, as well as a 25,000 square-foot French market and food court inspired by Mario Batali’s Eataly. Battery Park City residents already enjoy many excellent restaurants like Danny Meyer’s North End Grill and Blue Smoke, and The Ritz-Carlton Hotel’s 2 West. Along The Esplanade, waterfront restaurants like Merchants River House and Gigino at Wagner Park feature

magnificent views of the Hudson River, New Jersey Shoreline, Statue of Liberty and New York Harbor. It’s hard to believe that this fascinating neighborhood was developed in 1980 on landfill using soil and rock excavated during the construction of the World Trade Center, the New York City Water Tunnel, and from sand dredged from New York Harbor off Staten Island. This urban environment attracts people from all over the world looking to learn more about urban planning. Another interesting fact is that Battery Park City has the largest concentration of “land lease” buildings in Manhattan. Through the year 2069 all the buildings on Battery Park City lease the land under their structures and pay “ground rent” to The Battery Park City Authority which acts as landlord on behalf of the city and state. Battery Park City is the largest “green” neighborhood in the world, according to Batteryparkcity.org. The Battery Park City Authority leads the way in setting standards for healthy and sustainable environments. “Green” buildings are generally constructed from recycled materials and incorporate “green roofs”

and eco-friendly technologies for energy and water conservation. There are currently eight “green” buildings in Battery Park City including Liberty Green, Liberty Luxe, Millennium Tower Residences, Riverhouse, Tribeca Green, The Verdesian, The Visionaire and The Solaire, which is the first “green” high-rise residential building to be built in the United States. As the demand for “green” designs continues to grow in New York, environmentally conscious real estate developers use these eight “green” buildings as models. Battery Park City is also known for its large

number of condominium buildings. River & Warren, a luxury 192-unit condo conversion located at 212 Warren Street, is Battery Park City’s newest condominium. Residences at River & Warren boasts the highest quality finishes and details, including oversized windows, wide plank oak flooring, and custom oak and stainless steel islands, floor-to-ceiling millwork cabinetry, white Italian Calacatta marble countertops and backsplashes, and a suite of Miele, Sub-Zero, and Bosch appliances. Sales launched in December and prices range from $1.3 million for a one-bedroom to $10 million for a five-bedroom apartment, according to Curbed.com. In December, my buyers and I viewed a dazzling corner three-bedroom with three and half baths residence on the market at the time for $4,695,000. With a focus on its endless river views, this C-line residence is glamorous, airy, and light-filled. Battery Park City is dramatic, romantic, uplifting and brings you closer to nature. People move there for its environmentally friendly architecture, breathtaking waterfront views, 36 acres of public parks and gardens, children friendly amenities, and the superior quality of life this peaceful community offers.

Kitchen Cabinets Last Longer than Marriages A

By Jonathan Baron, ASID

ccording the US Department of Labor Statistics study, many changes in the last half century have affected marriage and divorce rates. About 85 percent married by age 46, and among those who married, a sizeable fraction, almost 30 percent, married more than once. Approximately 42 percent of marriages that took place between ages 15 and 46 ended in divorce by age 46. Women are more likely to marry and to remarry than were men. In addition, marriages of women were more likely to end in divorce, as were marriages that began at younger ages. On average, women married at younger ages than men. According to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), the average kitchen lasts 50 years. These are few examples for kitchens that may last longer than your marriage.

Carre’-2-FG The technical, particularly elaborate processing of the elegant CARRÉ-2-FG | CARRÉ-2-LG frame fronts ensures perfect lacquered surfaces with an even, high degree of shine: insets and frame are processed separately and are only put together once they have been lacquered and polished. Another choice in the LEICHT Collection 2015.

Leicht Concrete 1 The manufacture of a CONCRETE 1 demands much know-how and craftsman’s skill. Fine concrete is manually applied with a spatula to a lacquered MDF -panel. This produces an authentic, unique surface appearance with subtly changing spatula textures. Differently refracted light further brings the front to life. A matt lacquer seal makes the front very durable and gives it a silky feel. Three mélange-like iridescent colors contribute to the wide design range in the LEICHT Collection 2015. There is a choice of a light color (Manhattan), a darker color (Brasilia) and a rusty tinted grey (le Havre).

Tocco Leicht has the latest technology behind it’s cupboard fronts. The swing-out shelves in the tall cabinet units can be pulled out completely with one movement. This provides an instant view and access to all stored goods. The attractive interior arrangement enhances the true quality of the kitchen.

She’ll be swept off her feet the moment she comes home! 2) Set the Mood Use a combination of candle holders and trays you already own and display candles in different heights and sizes to create an oh-sosexy mood. Light them up before she walks through the door and watch her face glow!

124 • Resident February 2015

3) Spell It Out Head to a home decor or arts & crafts store and pick out some pre-made letter blocks to spell out romantic words like LOVE or HEART and display them over the mantelpiece or any other elevated structure in your living room or bedroom. Prefer DIY? Pick up some cardboard, cut out the letters and paint them over in red or pink or wrap them in colored yarn for a love sign on the entrance door to greet your girl.

4) Red Brings Sexy Back Buy a pair of red accented pillows or a red cashmere throw to “sexy up” your sofa. This also makes for a good investment in the long run as red never goes out of style! 5) Show Her Your Heart, Literally Buy some thick red or pink paper at your local arts & crafts store and cut out heart shapes and sprinkle them all over your home (or just on and around the bed) for a swoon-worthy romantic confetti effect!
