THE JOYS OF A LONG-AWAITED SUMMER

A

fter experiencing an extended winter season, we are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. With the longer days, summer is also one of the best times to experience everything that New York City has to offer—rooftop dining, outdoor concerts, summer travel, and of course the eternally chic Hamptons with its whirlwind of soirees and world-class beaches. This month we spotlighted the beautiful and talented Kelly Rutherford—a Los Angeles transplant who now calls New York City home. Though she’s experienced a life journey filled with ups and downs, Kelly sees the love and positivity in any situation no matter how dire it may seem, a lesson everyone should live by. Her radiance and elegance can be seen in our exclusive shoot held at Richard Mishaal’s gorgeous Tribeca showroom and shot by Udo Spreitzenbarth. We also featured the Queen of Philanthropy—Jean Shafiroff, a fixture on the social and charitable circuit in Manhattan and the Hamptons. Whether its raising money for Southampton Hospital or animal shelters in the East End, Jean has tirelessly devoted her life’s work to championing causes to benefit those in need. Each day in June gradually becomes longer and culminates in the summer equinox, which was the theme for our dreamy fashion editorial this month—A Midsummer Night’s Dream shot by Evan Guttman. This ethereal spread was styled by stylists from DV Closet and shot in a sprawling SoHo townhouse at 30 Sullivan Street. Summertime is one of our favorite seasons to travel and explore the world. This month we highlighted our favorite chic summertime getaways to exotic unexplored bucket list destinations. Our international destinations brought us to the rainforests of Nicaragua and the jetsetter’s playground in the South of France. While stateside we featured a weekend getaway for the foodie in New Orleans, as well as family friendly destinations such as Destin, FL and Wildwood, NJ. As New York City is a foodie’s paradise, dining out is a beloved way of life for New Yorkers. Our extensive dining out guide covers some of our favorite not to be missed new gems around town.

With the change of seasons, we at Resident Magazine have also had a changing of the guard. We are pleased to welcome our new publisher and creative director, Christopher Pape, who has returned to the publication bringing a wealth of experience and a clean aesthetic to this summer issue. We hope you will love the new look as much as we loved putting this issue together.

With the knowledge that women today do not have the time and money to invest in what used to be expensive and high end, DV Closet was the answer to that void. It’s a platform that extends luxurious fashion services to the masses without the luxurious price tag. Danae wanted to help create confidence and empowerment among women and felt the

SUMMER WEIGHT TIPS By ERIC R. BRAVERMAN, MD

A

s summer arrives and we head to the beach to enjoy the warmer weather, remember that it’s not just about looking great in a new swimsuit. It’s important to stay hydrated, use sunscreen, and proper footwear! Summer is about feeling great and treating your body with care.

As we get older the battle against obesity becomes more of a steeper climb. Most of us know that we can practically eat a whale when we are 18 and gain no weight gain but at age 60 an olive can make us gain 10 pounds! Getting older, the hormone leptin levels rises and our dopamine in the brain decreases, and metabolism slows down. Exercise and proper diet can help get the brain increased

dopamine, and decreased leptin levels down. Obesity is as a result of metabolic aging that involves the brain, and endocrine system. The good news is that there are simple, fun and deeply fulfilling ways to live a healthier life so you can enjoy all that summer has to offer to lose weight. pathmed.com

HERE ARE SOME HELPFUL TIPS Exercise ·Prioritize one hour of total aerobic exercise a day plus weight bearing. ·Stretch properly and leave time for a warm up and cool down. ·Increase muscle mass is key to the fight against obesity. ·Get plenty of sleep, 7-8 hours per night. A cool room is more conducive to better sleep. ·Get simple mouth pieces to open airways and breathe. ·Parents know that there is nothing more precious than time spent having fun with their kids, laying ball, swimming, tennis, golf, sailing or just tossing a Frisbee and building a sand

castle. Being active and having fun with your kids is what it’s really all about. For the rest of us, social hour with friends and family can be just as important. Diet ·Make an effort to eat less salt, sugar, white flour and junk food and you will start to see a difference in your energy and overall health. ·Fish, fish and more fish, especially with spices like Rosemary and Basil to help inflammation to joints and aging. ·Plain Yogurt with Cinnamon is terrific as a probiotic rich snack. ·Coconut Water is a great way to stay hydrated.

·When choosing foods try to maintain a 10-1 or higher Potassium to Sodium ratio. ·All Berries help improve regularity. ·If you think in terms of a rainbow of colors, add a wide variety of fruits like pomegranates, tangelos, and blackberries to your salad or meal to gain all of the nutrients these foods have to offer. 5 Behaviors for a longer life ·Eating a healthy, colorful diet. ·Don’t smoke. ·Get regular physical activity. ·Moderate alcohol consumption. ·Maintaining a healthy weight.

SUMMERTIME BEAUTY Look Your Best with Butterfly Studio By hillary latos

W

ith summer around the corner, it’s time to let your hair down, get some highlights and enjoy the carefree lighter side that comes with warm weather. Here are some of our favorite choices to enhance that natural summertime glow.

One of Manhattan’s favorite hair salons just got a beautiful revamped look. In 2001 Kattia Solano opened the Butterfly Studio Salon, which grew quickly over the years and landed them in their current airy loft space in the Flatiron District. Known for transforming their client’s hair to reflect the current trends and also incorporate their busy lifestyles, Butterfly Studio Salon has been the go-to destination for models, A Listers and other chic New Yorkers in the know. After a complete gut renovation, the updated salon area is warm and inviting, utilizing every source of natural light offered, amplifying true hair color and every beauty detail to review and showcase their best work. This modern, downtown space fuses natural elements with elegance, cultivating an environment their clients look forward to visiting and being pampered. In addition to updating the way they look, the salon has also revised their menu with service options to fit that modern, on-the-go Manhattan client. One of their most popular options is the Paint Bar, a fantastic means to tweak your look or intensify your color around your face, add some summer highlights or cover the grays in just 20 minutes. butterflystudiosalon.com

Kelly Rutherford Young at Heart By hillary latos

W

ith a career spanning over three decades, Kelly Rutherford is no stranger to the silver screen. Much like her roles in Melrose Place and Gossip Girl, Kelly Rutherford’s classic beauty, poise and grace in real life mirror her on camera presence. Here Resident Magazine sits with the lovely Kelly Rutherford for our June cover shoot to discuss her current projects, summer plans, love and life as a transcontinental mother. RM: What are some of your current projects? KR: We are doing a spinoff of Pretty Little Liars called The Perfectionist and I’m traveling to Oregon to shoot the pilot for that. The show is about how on the surface everything seems to appear to be perfect but underneath everyone is a hot mess.

I’m also doing Dynasty. I also did a series in Pittsburg called Gone with Leven Rambin and Chris Noth which is airing in France and Germany. Are you also working on a book? I would like to do a book about my Instagram. We can only scroll back so far, but I would love to put all of the quotes together. What are your thoughts about the shakeup of Hollywood? I think it’s a shakeup globally, but Hollywood brings certain things to light. Though it seems to be about equality and feminism, it’s really about humanity and treating each other with respect and beauty. We all know the economies do better

when there is equality and education and everyone has a chance to thrive. It is like an old archaic system that is beginning to decay and this is the rebirth. You see how this is affecting women, but it’s also affecting many other areas as well. Equality doesn’t matter where you are from or your religion, it’s about humanity and seeing each other with equanimity, love and respect, and realizing there are certain things that need to be balanced out on the planet. Your career spans a few decades and has taken on a new resurgence. What do you think of the opportunities now for actresses over 40? It’s interesting now because women over 40 are

now the buyers and they have the purchasing prowess. What’s happening now is that we are advertising to the demographic that is actually spending the money and makes the decisions for the household. When you look at a woman over 40 they look so much better now between the plastic surgery and Botox, people are taking care of themselves and eating better. I think age has become irrelevant and it’s really about what people have to offer and it’s more about how you feel and being young at heart. Your personal life and custody battle has recently been in the spotlight. What are some of the biggest life lessons you have learned throughout this experience? I’ve come to realize that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I’ve learned a lot about forgiveness, healing, and love. You can separate people but you’ll never separate the love they feel for each other. When people are happy with themselves they don’t tend to hurt other people, and it’s about having an awareness that this person must be suffering or hurt when they are acting out or causing others to suffer. It’s really about awareness, forgiveness and realizing the repercussions of things. At the end we are all doing well. My kids are doing great and so am I, and that’s all that matters. A lot of the confusion in this situation was how do you parent under these circumstances and keep love in your heart. It takes a lot of resilience and support while picking and choosing people to be around you that you love. Sometimes you trust the wrong people. There are always things that happen. And as you get older everyone has gone through something. I’m just thankful to have gone through what I went through. Some people on the planet have it much worse than me. I just saw Human Flow, which is about the immigration situation that’s going on in the world. It makes you put everything in perspective. I think anytime you go through a tough time, the key is to look for what is good, what is working, and what will come out of this that is positive and uplifting. My kids speak three languages and they

44 | resident.com

are doing well. They are cultured, he’s a good dad. These are things I’ve chosen to focus on, though I could’ve focused on something else. How often do you get to see your children? I’m on the plane a lot and flying to Monaco to see them all the time. The South of France is so beautiful and it’s wonderful to see them growing up. The good news is that they are in school full time and I see them every holiday and half of the summer. It works for us, we’ve figured it out, we use face time a lot. You just find the good things, it’s what gets us through everything. What are your summer plans? I’m going to be traveling and spending time with my kids. And I’ll be waiting to see if this pilot gets picked up. You’ve lived in Los Angeles and New York City. Which place do you prefer? I really like both. There are so many things I love about both and they are so different. I would say you can’t really compare them. There are certain restaurants and places I love in LA, like the Brentwood Market and Malibu, I get my fix there and then I come to NYC and get my fix here, and then go to Europe a bit. So you have the best of all worlds! It is turning out that way. In the beginning I was thinking how am I going to do all this, but now it has just become normal. How would you describe your style? I’m part tomboy for sure, and part classic and traditional. In terms of what I buy I spend money on my accessories like a nice handbag, jewelry, and shoes or a beautiful coat, but I live in jeans and t shirts or long flowy dresses for the summer that I can pair with cute shoes and a handbag. I’m not fussy at all, I don’t have a stylist, though I probably should. I just want to be comfortable. There are

days when I don’t want to brush my hair and I just want my coffee and flat shoes. Then there are days when I want to feel more grown up, sexy or feminine today. It’s really about mood. I’m less trendy and more classic but modern. I love Celine, and I love to mix hi low. I can go to Topshop and pick out a bunch of flowy dresses and pair it with a nice Hermes cuff. I spend less money on clothes than accessories. Just because I’m around kids, traveling and I get bored. This keeps it fun. So you are a Scorpio. Do you feel you embody the typical characteristics of one? No, actually I’ve had my Vedic astrology done and she said I was more Libra because I have a lot of Scorpio friends and I feel that I am very different. I believe in the balance of everything, I look at all the sides of a situation and I want everything to be fair. But then again, there’s a joke, ‘How many Scorpios does it take to change a lightbulb?’ And the answer is ‘None, they like to sit in the dark.’ So there’s that side to it. I have a lot of funny friends which helps lighten things up. Who do you find to be inspirational? There are so many women in different walks of life that inspire me. Women in general inspire me. What our bodies go through, how resilient we are, how we balance everything and how we network and support each other. I think we are starting to realize the power in that. I really think all women inspire me, and the things we do for less money and take care of a family. There’s a lot of pressure in our society to stay young and beautiful and be pristine yet sexy. I have so much admiration for all women navigating all of the different societies we live in. I think that’s part of age. We don’t think of everything we do because to us it’s just normal. I’m also inspired by all of the resources of women and their knowledge. I’ve started interviewing my friends and now I have a whole new respect for what you do!

Jean Shafiroff A Powerful Philanthropic Voice By bennett marcus Photos By micheal paniccia

J

ean Shafiroff is at the pinnacle of New York’s philanthropic circles, sitting on the boards of numerous foundations, chairing multiple events - nine in 2018 alone - and donating to many causes in addition to those with which she is personally involved. “When it comes to giving, Jean Shafiroff leads the pack,” says Elsie McCabe Thompson, president of the New York City Mission Society, an organization with which Shafiroff has long been actively involved. “I believe those who do have the resources have an obligation to give,” says Shafiroff. “I believe you must. I think when we look back on the great leaders in history, Martin Luther King, JFK, and just about everyone else, they all believed in the importance of giving back and trying to aid society.” Shafiroff’s selfless devotion to causes has not gone unnoticed; in April, she was honored at the Women’s

Leadership Awards, hosted by state assemblywoman Rebecca Seawright. The NYC International Film Foundation also recognized her work, and this summer, Shafiroff will be honored by Hadassah. “Philanthropy entails the giving of one’s time, one’s resources, and of oneself,” says Jonathan W. McCann, former board president of the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation. “Having worked successfully with Jean Shafiroff on behalf of the Foundation, her knowledge and dedication in the field is highly respected.” Three areas closest to her heart are underserved communities, women’s rights, and animal welfare. “There’s tremendous need everywhere,” she says. Shafiroff is passionate about the New York City Mission Society, which benefits underserved children in the city. “We’ve been around for 200 years; I think that’s very important,” she says. “We are

primarily based in Harlem and we help children with after school, weekend, and summer programs to give them supplemental education so that they can be prepared to get into college.” The group is now exploring the possibility of setting up a charter school. “I think that would be great.” Shafiroff also sits on the board of the New York Women’s Foundation, which helps to empower women to rise out of poverty. “We are the largest grant-making group of our kind in the United States. We’re also a voice for women, which is particularly important today. That’s not just in the United States but worldwide. Women need a voice worldwide.” These represent just the tip of the iceberg of worthy causes on Shafiroff’s radar. Among the galas she is chairing in 2018 are benefits for the American Heart Association, the Ellen Hermanson Foundation, the United Negro College Fund, and the Couture Council of the Museum at FIT. This year, Shafiroff

has hosted parties in her home for several of these organizations, as well as for Surgeons of Hope, and more are in the planning stages, including an event for Southampton Hospital. “I feel very lucky to be able to do the charity work that I do,” she says. “I think that it’s a great blessing to be in the position that I’m in. I’m very fortunate that I can help others.” In fact, Shafiroff has devoted her life to philanthropic and humanitarian work. While the black-tie galas are glamorous, the fundraising and planning is grueling. “As a volunteer it’s a lot of work and it’s hard,” she says. There are many meetings, and chairing events entail a lot of fundraising. “Not everybody may want to support the causes you’re involved with, and you have to be able to accept a lot of rejection. I’m enjoying my life too, but my philanthropy work is full-time, and I work very hard at all of the causes that I’m involved with.” How did Shafiroff get where she is today? She comes from a middle-class background, and credits her family life and Catholic school education for teaching her the importance of giving back. “My dad was a schoolteacher,” she says. “I live a different life now, but I never forget my roots.” Working as a physical therapist at St. Luke’s Hospital, she saw the struggles facing some of her patients living at or below the poverty level. Sharifoff later returned to her alma mater, Columbia University, this time to earn a MBA, after which she worked on Wall Street. “I found that Wall Street wasn’t really for me,” she laughs. By then she had married her husband, Martin Shafiroff, and once she became pregnant, stopped working and became a stay-at-home mom. That’s when she began getting involved in philanthropy in small ways, volunteering at the schools her two daughters attended, and pitching in for school fundraisers. “I must have baked two thousand brownies with my daughters.” She continued to raise funds for the schools, and also became active with the American Jewish Committee, where her business education came in handy. “As a non-Jewish woman, they put me on their board and they put me on

the diplomatic finance committee.” She was in her early 30s, and found it quite stimulating. While her daughters were still in school, she slowly got more active in charity. “Once I became an empty nester, I became more and more involved,” Shafiroff says. A part-time Hamptons resident, Shafiroff chaired the Southampton Hospital’s big gala three times, in 2010, ’11, and ’13, and raised a lot of money. “I was actively involved in fundraising, asking for many, many donations, mostly $10,000 and up. The first year I chaired we raised $1.7 million, and then the next year $2 million, and the third year about $1.7 million.”

money are philanthropists. “When we think of philanthropists, we think of someone like Michael Bloomberg or Bill Gates, but everyone can be acting philanthropists,” she says. An example she cites is how many firefighters and police officers volunteer on the side, for example, as EMTs or helping the American Red Cross when disasters hit. Others volunteer as Big Brothers or Big Sisters, or read to the blind. “We have hundreds of opportunities to volunteer, and as a result people who don’t have the financial resources available can be active philanthropists by lending their available time and knowledge.”

Shafiroff’s daughters are now grown and involved in their own philanthropic causes. Her younger daughter, Elizabeth, started her own animal welfare organization called Global Strays, working with local groups and rescuing stray dogs in developing countries. Mom, a big animal lover, also actively participates, and is a major donor.

We all have a responsibility to act to help improve the world, she believes. “Philanthropy and activism go hand-in-hand. To be silent on human rights violations is wrong. To be silent on crimes against animals is also wrong. God gave us a voice and we must use it. God gave us two hands to work with. We must speak out - and then walk the talk.”

Shafiroff absolutely loves what she does. “I don’t play golf or tennis, although I do work out and I’m social, but I’d just as soon socialize around causes than just go out to dinners,” she says.

Shafiroff advises helping out in causes you’re passionate about, or that have affected you, perhaps a friend or relative has suffered some form of cancer or other disease, for instance.

In 2016, Shafiroff took it to a whole new level, publishing a book, “Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life By What You Give,” a guide for everyone, no matter your financial status, on how to help make the world a better place.

She personally strives to get involved where she thinks there is a need. “The biggest organizations probably don’t need me,” she says. “If they’re well funded and raising a lot of money, I think I should use my resources elsewhere.”

“One of the reasons I wrote the book was to try to encourage others to get involved and to see their own value and self-worth, so they know that they could be of value to others, to humanity, or to animals.”

Shafiroff also purchases tickets to many charitable events with which she is not directly involved because she thinks it’s important to show her support for other worthy causes. And so she has an extensive wardrobe, befitting a woman who attends many of New York’s red-carpet charity galas.

In the book, Shafiroff defines a philanthropist in the traditional sense of the word, as “one who makes an active effort to promote human welfare,” per the Merriam-Webster dictionary. “Anyone can be a philanthropist,” she says, casting aside the modern notion that only people who give huge sums of

“I love fashion, and fashion employs a lot of people,” she says. “I work with a lot of lesser known designers, and I like to think I am helping a little by buying one of their dresses.”

Among the more independent New York-based designers she frequently wears are B. Michael, Victor de Souza, Zang Toi, and Milly. Shafiroff does mix in big names like Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera, but tries to vary it. “It’s a hobby, so I enjoy it. And of course I look for sales because I can’t buy everything, like anyone else.” And she unabashedly repeats outfits. “If women like Beyonce and Kate Middleton can repeat, I can, for sure!” Increasingly, Shafiroff has been thinking about philanthropy on a global scale. “The idea of global philanthropy is something I’m very interested in, and I’m very interested in promoting this concept in any way I can, because on some of the trips we’ve taken to different countries I’ve found that there is a great need for more philanthropy. There’s the very wealthy and the very poor.” In some countries outside of the U.S., philanthropy is embraced on a smaller scale. While visiting China in 2012, she met with representatives of the Shanghai Charity Foundation and was very pleased to find that the Chinese are very interested in furthering philanthropic work in their society. Shafiroff would like to see the model of philanthropy used in the U.S. adopted in other countries. “Charity is part of our culture, and charities have existed in our country for the last 200 years,” she says. “It would be wonderful to be involved in helping those outside of our country embrace philanthropy as we have.” Poverty exists worldwide, she notes. “I don’t believe we’ll ever end poverty, but we can work to reduce poverty. We can improve lives for people,” she says, and pauses. “Maybe that’s a new book.” a handful of model sentence structures, to generate Lorem Ipsum which looks reasonable. RICHARD MISHAAN Celebrated Designer By Andrew ChurchilL

F

or this month we chose to shoot our cover star Kelly Rutherford in the stunning Tribeca showroom of Richard Mishaan.

Thanks for taking the time to chat with us and congratulations on 25 years in the business! How did you get started? I actually worked in the fashion industry for 10 years, so I learned a lot from that and really felt that it teed me up for my future career in design! Fashion and home design are interesting because on one level they’re not very different, but on the other they couldn’t be further apart; I’ve learned a lot from both. Are there any special highlights that jump out from your time in design? I have to say, I really loved opening and spending

sound and even remote controlled blinds on the windows.

Do you notice any trends now that are really polar opposite from when you started? Anything totally new? Yes, definitely. One of the more popular trends I am seeing as a designer now is the incorporation of technology. Everything now includes speakers, customizable lighting, remote this and that, and it’s really a phenomenon that’s here to stay. Now, my job is to work with these elements in a seamless way so that they flow perfectly with the spaces I work to curate.

Do you have any favorite pieces in your studio? I love so many things in my office that it would be impossible just to pick one or two. It’s a constantly rotating selection of my inspirations so I really have to take a step back to see it all and to realize that each one marks an important process in my 25 years as a designer.

Do you incorporate any of these technologies into your beautiful work space and studio in TriBeCa? Funny you ask. Yes, of course. In here, since it really is a showroom for my passions and my aesthetic, we have adjustable lighting, surround

Is there anything in the pipeline coming up that you’re looking forward to? Well, yes. I’m working on an exciting hotel project with a very inspirational friend in LA. It’s been a pleasure to speak with you and having Kelly Rutherford here to shoot was an honor. Thank you

avid Rosen, Licensed Real Estate Agent with Douglas Elliman, is in the top echelon of New York City real estate agents, having sold over 1,000 homes, leading his team to become one of the Top Five Teams in TriBeCa, amongst many other achievements. This year, through the first quarter, Rosen has already sold over 50 homes and is on pace to do over $100M in sales. He recently executed a $13,500 lease in just one day at a rental property at 139 Wooster street and sold a townhouse at 161 W 91st street without a cooperating broker. His fourteen years in the field have given him experience with almost every facet of the real estate industry, established him as a deal maker, and a collaborative negotiator who scores big for his clients. Yet what makes Rosen exceptional is his unwavering commitment to each and every client—from celebrities and the ultra-rich to the working class. Rosen is the rare agent who understands the art of the sell and is someone you can trust, making him the go-to agent to get the job done for a wide range of clients. Choosing the right realtor to partner with you during one of your biggest life decisions can be daunting. Often, identifying the person or the team that understands “the art of the sell” from an oversaturated community of agents feels impossible. Rosen has experience with almost every facet of the real estate industry, having jumped in head first right out of college into a Real Estate sales career in 2005. He quickly rose in the ranks to

The average sales price he is currently marketing is around $1M, though he has extensive experience with luxury homes as well, having helped buyers and sellers on properties over $10M. You can catch Rosen at his various workshops he hosts around the city, dishing on topics including the benefits of real estate investment and how to avoid common pitfalls.

Empowering Gen Z I’ve definitely seen an increase in apartments being sold to Gen Z’ers, individuals who are 21 and below. Young people love homeownership, and why shouldn’t they? Everything about leasing is somewhat demeaning, everything about homeownership is empowering, and nobody relishes self-empowerment more than Gen Z.

He soon started his own company, Home-saver Real Estate, which he managed for two years before selling it. After his entrepreneurial venture, Rosen moved onto work with the Elliman’s Rubin Team, until 2015. While there, he earned top acclaim from multiple outlets, including be-ing part

I love young people and they love me, too. In many ways I feel I relate to them as well as anyone else I might meet. They are sharp, nice, well-mannered and very fair-minded, in my experience. I feel like they are less cocky than my generation was at that time in life. Gen Z makes up a massive amount of people. They are going to be the leaders of tomorrow, and they know that real estate is a powerful asset class and wealth creation vehicle. Empowerment creates character and defines responsibilities, really always a win-win.

THE DREAMCLOUD MATTRESS Sleep Like a Dream By hillary latos

F

or those who study the art of feng shui, your bed is the most important piece of furniture in your home. It is the root of supporting your personal energy levels where the body heals itself. As we spend approximately a third of our lives in bed, investing in the right mattress is paramount to getting proper rest. While clearly all mattresses are not the same, the best ‘mattress in a box’ to hit the market is the ultra premium Dreamcloud Mattress which is a hybrid that combines the supportive infrastructure of a traditional spring mattress with the comfort and support of a high density memory foam mattress. Transform your sleeping experience to that of a five star resort where you just want to linger on your heavenly bed. What sets the Dreamcloud mattress apart from its competitors is the 8 levels of support encapsulated in a 15” high mattress.

62 | resident.com

From the moment you lay out your mattress you can feel luxury at the first touch as you glide your fingers over the hand tufted cashmere blend topper. The gel infused memory foam provides cooling heat distribution and support that cradles your body. Super soft quilted memory foam provides comfortable support that simulates lying on clouds. Natural latex is added to withstand the test of time and offer responsive cushioning bounce. Under that is the dream plush supporting memory foam that provides deep contouring support to adjust to your position throughout the night. The sixth layer is created from super dense soft memory foam that keeps your body in alignment no matter what position you sleep in while cradling your spine. Making it a hybrid mattress is the patented micro coil compression system that is divided into 5 distinct comfort zones to provide the precise level of support and isolate

movement and minimize sleep disturbances. The foundation layer is created from high density super soft memory foam at the base layer to keep your spine in alignment and absorb any movement. Created by the manufacturers of the popular Nectar memory foam mattress, they are so certain that you will fall in love with your plush Dreamcloud mattress that buyers have a 365 day return period. While few things last forever, the Dreamcloud’s Everlong Warranty does in fact last forever and technically beyond a lifetime. The only caveat is that once you sleep on a Dreamcloud you will never want to go back to a traditional mattress again.

DIRT CANDY An Ode to Vegetables By Christopher A. Pape

D

irt is not a word you necessarily associate with fine dining. I, for one, tend to avoid dirt. I don’t like to get messy; maybe I’m too much of city slicker. Yet, dirt has recently, at least for me, taken on a new meaning. That’s because it is part of a name of the best vegetarian restaurant in New York City. And I will go one step further and say that Dirt Candy transcends its vegetarianism and is, at least in my mind, one of the best restaurants in the city. Recently, a guest and I had the pleasure of dining at this temple of vegetables. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love a good vegetable. I’m Italian, it’s in my DNA. But, Dirt Candy, goes beyond a wellplaced tomato or a fancy cucumber. No, it elevates the vegetable; it turns the lowly beat into art. Each dish is thoughtfully crafted to bring maximum flavor and visual pleasure to their well-heeled clients. The mastermind behind such competence with the veggie is Amanda Cohen; she is both chef

64 | resident.com

and owner of this award-winning restaurant. So ahead of her time was she, that hers was the first vegetable-focused restaurant in the city and the clear leader of the vegetable-forward movement

(of which there are now many adherents to this new religion). To speak of our meal is to speak in glowing

adjectives. Who knew, at least my thinking went, the vegetable could be so pleasing? This is total credit to Cohen and her staff. Recently, the restaurant decided to eliminate their a la carte menu and now serves two tasting options: the Vegetable Patch (5 courses) and the one we had, the Vegetable Garden (9-10 courses). The longer menu changes based on the season and whatever the restaurant’s purveyors bring them that week. The individual dishes we had almost don’t matter, as each presented its respective veggie on a pedestal and gave us a new perspective on the ingredient. However, some of the standouts included a Korean fried broccoli that was – all at once – spicy, tangy, crunchy and a revelation. I didn’t know broccoli could taste like this! Another dish that made an impression was the spinach spätzle. Now, as an Italian, I’m not fan of German or Austrian spätzle, thinking we have a bit of cultural appropriation on our hands; however, the amount of spinach flavor Ms. Cohen got into this humble pasta was breathtaking (and mouthwatering). I have never, in over ten years of doing this, had a pasta pack as much vegetable flavor within the dough as this did. Credit is due; it was an amazing dish and representative of the quality and care the restaurant puts into each dish. My guest and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal. I urge you to book your table today and find out how the vegetable can easily become the star of the show. Perhaps, for once, it will be both an enjoyable meal and one that is also good for the waistline. 86 Allen Street New York, NY 10002 212.228.7732 dirtcandynyc.com

PINKY’S SPACE East Village Take out with Cordon Bleu pedigree By CHRISTOPHER CAMERON

I

n the Manhattan’s hyper competitive food scene, even the takeout comes with serious culinary prestige.

Chef Wesley Wobles -- whose impressive CV boasts executive chef positions at 8 celebrated NYC and Paris restaurants, including Café Del Mar in Greenwich Village and Le Midi at Union Square -- has opened his first standalone effort in a small but colorful storefront at 70 East 1st Street in the East Village. With his new eatery dubbed Pinky’s Space, Wobles hopes to reimagine what “take away” means with whimsical presentation and a seriously gourmet menu. Pinky’s has an almost carnivalesque atmosphere, with his signature “Space Cake” desserts (red velvet, brownie, and banana yogurt) spinning in the windows, a mural of colorful hearts filling a wall, along with stickers, candy and cocktail umbrellas up for grabs on the counter. Forgoing plates, his food comes

70 | resident.com

served in jolly blue-and- white-striped cups, set into a dazzling disk and packed into a pink cake box. But don’t stop in looking for cotton candy, Wobles, who trained at the Le Cordon Bleu and worked as a private chef for both Bill Clinton and Salvatore Ferragamo, is drawing upon his time in Paris and New Orleans to create dishes like ratatouille, braised brisket, fresh buttermilk and cornmeal biscuits and roasted turkey breast with lingonberry jam. Wobles says that he had looked at spaces in Brooklyn but jumped at the chance to open next to the 2nd Avenue F train station. He hopes that he will be able to open additional restaurants near other transit hubs soon. Although, Pinky’s Space represents a fairly unique approach to French-Southern fusion, reviewers are responding positively to quality of the food and original vibe.

“Brand New, life-changing Southern-style biscuits. This place is AWESOME: quirky vibes (neon signage, free stickers, Talking Heads playing), mouth-watering Southern food (brisket /sausage) that you can take to go, open early and late,” reads a recent Yelp review by Olivia S. “This is a strange little new takeout spot serving a small menu of Southern food with a hint of French influence,” reviewer Mike C. added. “The space itself is fun, with the best thing about it probably being the huge pile of stickers.” Though Manhattan has become increasingly dominated by chain Mexican and salad joints, a small restaurant with big chef-influenced character isn’t to be missed.

longtime favorite of Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot, and Mick Jagger, and many other celebrities and posh jetsetters, Saint-Tropez, has become synonymous with Cote d’azur style, glamour, and exclusivity. As one of the world’s most coveted destinations, its picturesque coastline and idyllic French Riviera seaside charm continue to attract the international beau monde, and for good reason. Here, situated in the heart of this vibrant hotspot, amidst the

moored yachts at Vieux Port and the charming cobblestone streets, the Hotel Byblos Saint-Tropez has been the preferred address since it opened its doors in 1967 and continues to attract globetrotters and fashionistas alike, especially during the peak summer season. Having recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, this iconic hotel also has a glittering history to go along with its splendid interior and design.

Founded on love by billionaire Lebanese hotelier, Jean-Prosper Gay-Para, his adoration and hope to woo the legendary Brigitte Bardot inspired the creation of a befitting hotel and nightclub in the place she had come to love. Months later, the Byblos was taken over by a French businessman who expanded and beautified the property to resemble a fairy tale–like fusion of a Provençal hamlet and the port of Byblos, one of the oldest villages in Lebanon. His vision was certainly

achieved and evidenced by the hotel’s “village within a village” feel. Colorful stucco houses with azure-shuttered windows and French doors, verdant gardens, balconies and terraces that overlook the palm tree–dotted courtyard and its central pool, create a space which feels like another world. Today, 91 individually decorated rooms and suites are scattered throughout the extensive property and are all uniquely designed and adorned with plush furnishings saturated in color offering breathtaking vistas of the Riviera. Artisan mosaics, impressive sculptures from the Mediterranean region dating back to ancient Rome, and artwork unearthed in Lebanon fill the public spaces and perpetuate the cultural tradition of Saint-Tropez as a haven for artists. Spend the day lazing by the pool while enjoying

the Byblos’ all-day, late-into-the-night restaurant and bar, Le B. which features dishes made from fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and a full range of cocktails. For a more diverse and gourmet menu, the swanky Alain Ducasse concept restaurant, Rivea offers a chic indoor-outdoor space arranged on a massive terrace lined with bold striped loungers under a candlelit canopy of lanterns. Inside, a glass-fronted kitchen invites guests to marvel at the pristine space where Chef Vincent Maillard serves up a creative menu that blends French and Italian influences with fresh, local, seasonal ingredients. Rivea offers a selection of appetizers to share, like spiny artichokes and smoked eel, homemade pastas, and Rivea’s signature dish, marinated sea bream and eggplant. A perfect spot to people-watch while enjoying the exquisite bold flavors, Rivea will leave your palate satiated while the ambiance will

prepare you for the evening ahead. Afterwards, just a few steps away, the region’s most famous nightclub, Les Caves du Roy awaits a decadent night of partying and debauchery. Here at this intimate mythical club, the scene rages on until dawn so be prepared to experience top-notch DJs, flowing champagne, as well as some of the best dressed and beautiful starlets and VIPs. Legendary and magical, the Byblos is a timeless hotel that remains a family-owned business and prides itself on attention to detail and unparalleled service. Today, it consists of 115 suites and villas set in landscaped grounds with modern sculptures from the private collection of the hotel’s current owner, Dietmar Hopp.

80 | resident.com

The property has two internationally renowned golf courses; Le Chateau and Le Riou as well as the only training center of its kind in Europe, where the very best teaching methods are used. The two courses consist of valleys, lakes, ravines, waterfalls, and forests. Golf architect Dave Thomas preserved the existing

Beyond the golf and the beauty of the hotel’s location is its spa. With 35,000 square feet over two floors, the hotel’s spa is designed to emulate a traditional Provençal “Bastide.” The hotel has just launched a new spa partnership with the iconic and internationally renowned spa brand, Valmont, where 7 new Valmont treatments, including the signature ‘Facial Treatment Terre Blanche’

George Washington is known to have slept at the Brinckerhoff house on multiple occasions. The home became known as a “famous stopping place for travelers on the road between New York City and Kingston”. Thousands of troops traveling between New York and New England passed the home. Washington, Alexander Hamilton and Baron von Steuben watched from the house as thousands of British and German prisoners were marched from Boston to Virginia in November of 1778. Many dignitaries have stayed at the Brinckerhoff house, in addition to Washington and Lafayette, including General Alexander McDougall, Governor George Clinton, General Henry Knox, Thomas Jefferson, John Hancock, Benedict Arnold, Alexander Hamilton, General Putnam, General Greene, General Gates, John Adams and John Jay. DR. CHRISTOPHER CALAPAI Stem Cell Guru By BENNETT MARCUS

Eligible Bachelor List

D

r. Christopher Calapai, D.O., a board certified family practitioner with specialties in anti-aging medicine and nutritional guidance, is a man of many interests. For over 25 years he has hosted two weekly callin shows on WABC radio, offering health and medical advice on Saturday 8pm - 9pm and Sunday 6pm - 7pm. In his off hours, Dr. Calapai, who is single, is something of a swashbuckler: piloting planes, practicing full-contact karate with other black belts, boating (he’s a member of the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club), or taking racecar-driving lessons. At home, when he’s not playing with his 150lb. German shepherd, Maximus, he enjoys entertaining; his specialty is leg of lamb, based on a family recipe his mother taught him. Dr. Calapai also makes homemade wine; he actually sent some to the former Pope, Benedict XVI, who wrote a note of thanks for “the delicious wine”. In 1995, the New York Post named Dr. Calapai one of the ten most eligible bachelors suitable to escort a separated Princess Diana on her trip to New York.

Celebrity Clients He has offices in Manhattan and Long Island, and has consulted with Chris Noth, Mike Tyson,

Mickey Rourke, Steven Seagal and Donal Logue of Fox’s hit series Gotham. Dr. Calapai was also a medical consultant for the New York Rangers hockey team.

A Leader in Stem Cell Therapy But most importantly, Dr. Calapai has become a leader in the use of stem cell therapy in the United States, participating in clinical trials to treat a host of disorders. In 2015, the New York Daily News referred to him as “The Stem Cell Guru.” Stem cell therapy has proven beneficial in treating a range of chronic conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, erectile dysfunction, arthritis, joint pain, stroke, heart and kidney failure, COPD, MS and lupus. Dr. Calapai is ushering in a new era of stem cell therapy in the United States.

Stem Cell Therapy Explained Stem cell therapy is a technique in which certain cells taken from your body fat are extracted and injected into tissues or the bloodstream, and these cells create healing for growth and repair of your body. The cells used in the therapy don’t have any “identity” or “blueprint.”

“When your eye, say, makes new cells, they can only be eye cells. Your hair or heart cells can only divide into the realm of the same cell,” Dr. Calapai explains. “There is a special type of cell that exists in your fat and your bone marrow that can be used to go anywhere and take on the identity of anything else.”

Stem Cells Aid in Anti-aging Medicine Dr. Calapai is board certified in anti-aging medicine, which constitutes a large part of his practice. His approach is a comprehensive medical and nutritional plan involving vitamins, minerals, diet, and exercise. Anti-aging medicine involves taking steps to get the body functioning at the level that it did years before by raising vitamin and mineral levels, which decreases the risk of heart disease, cancer, and other conditions. “If we can get your hormone levels where they were ten to fifteen years ago, like thyroid DHEA and testosterone, your body will feel and function as it did,” Dr. Calapai reports. “We’re not going to make you live to age 150, but we can get you to function at far greater levels. We’ve reversed type-2 diabetes in people,” he added.

DESPERATE TIMES: SHORT STORIES Interview with Adam Kluger By w.a. Muller

W

hy is Charles Bukowski a major literary influence on your new collection of critically acclaimed short stories? There are a lot of reasons. The humor, the honesty, the accessibility. When you find a writer that speaks to you-- like music - you just really appreci-

ate it. Bukowski deserves all the love he gets. His writing delivers. Post Office, Women, Love is a Dog From Hell, Ham on Rye, Hollywood and pretty much every book he ever wrote-- I’ve read them all and will keep re-reading them. The prose, the poetry - so good. Hemingway? Same thing. Hemingway knew how to write beautiful prose and he delivered. I love his Iceberg theory and his other theories on writing. Old Man & The Sea is a classic but so too are most of his short stories like

The Killers and The Three Day Blow. I also really enjoy his Green Hills of Africa. An important writer. Salinger? Catcher in The Rye. Masterpiece. Franny & Zooey also praise-worthy. And his Nine Stories. Salinger was a good short story writer. A Perfect Day for Bananafish was powerful and memorable. F. Scott Fitzgerald? Love Fitzgerald. So good. So talented. Gatsby was brilliant but his short stories are also worthy of notice from Bernice Bobs Her Hair to A Diamond as Big as the Ritz to the hilarious Pat Hobby Stories. To become the voice of a generation means you’re pretty good. What is Guy Lit? A label. People come up with labels. Who knows why? The truth of the matter is that Desperate Times is simply a collection of flash fiction and short stories about male protagonists who find themselves facing various conflicts. These stories do owe quite a bit to the rich American short story traditions that these previously mentioned literary giants (Bukowski, Hemingway) have already set forth. It’s hard not to be inspired by their books and advice on writing. One contemporary writer I love just for his understanding of dialogue is David Mamet. Glengarry Glen Ross--wow! Doesn’t matter if you are writing for the stage or a short story. Great dialogue is great dialogue. What do you hope readers will take away from Desperate Times: Short Stories? I hope the reader is entertained. I hope they find value or resonance in some of the stories and characters. I tried to order the 45 stories so that the collection would feel a little bit like an emotional roller coaster.

Show at the Marriott Marquis Hotel; the NYC Mission Society’s Champion for Children gala and started his summer at the Anglosphere Society by creating a musical salute to the Queen in honor of Meghan Markle’s wedding to Prince Harry.

Studio 54 While Donner was working at a law firm, the infamous NYC hotspot Studio 54 signed on as a client. “Whenever there was live music to be played there, I got the call because the owners, Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell, knew I loved to perform.” This exposure led him to sing at even more debutante balls, benefit galas and bar mitzvahs, which garnered him opportunities to play parties for celebrities including Mick Jagger, Andy Warhol, Truman Capote and Halston, a feat most rising artists can only dream of.

he went on to Fordham Law School before becoming a divorce lawyer while never losing his passion for performing, saying, “I was doing divorces during the week and playing weddings on the weekend with the band.” This unusual professional combination generated lifestyle stories in national media including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

Life of the Party

Now, in 2018, after performing for 29 years, Donner is a hotter commodity than ever. He has six bands and scores of backup singers under his baton and can perform everything from rock and R&B to Jazz and top 40 covers. High society is familiar territory for Donner. The entertainer grew up on Fifth Avenue in NYC and attended Princeton University. Following college,

CLUB KING Joey Morrissey By bennett marcus before the era of cellphones and the internet, so he collected contact details in order to get in touch with people. “I created the whole guerrilla marketing thing, where you hand out a million flyers. The other club owners hated me,” he says. But they all followed suit. In addition to running his own venues, Morrissey was the go-to person to bring crowds and renowned DJs to legendary venues such as Marquee, Studio 54, Palladium, China Club, Roxy, Tunnel, Limelight, Pangea, and many others.

Sound Factory The DJ is the Star In 1998, as DJs were beginning to rise to fame, Morrissey was promoting the opening of Sound Factory in Manhattan, where he focused on the DJ, a tactic that proved wildly successful. He went on to work with DJ Khaled, Jermaine Dupri, Swedish House Mafia, Jazzy Jeff and Funkmaster Flex to name a few. “There were big DJs, but the most you ever paid them was $1,000,” he says. Sound Factory had a fantastic sound system, and the owner wanted to promote the music. It worked, but Morrissey says he didn’t realize at the time how it was changing the industry. A night Morrissey booked with Dutch DJ Tiesto at Limelight in the late 1990s was such a success that afterward, an agent guaranteed Tiesto $1 million per year. “That started it,” says Morrissey. “After that, all the clubs started paying these DJs a tremendous amount of money.”

Victoria Secret Fashion Show Morrissey dreamed up the concept of paying celebrities to show up at his clubs. He had them host a party, and then promote it. His venues housed parties for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, NBA, NFL, MTV, the Tribeca Film Festival, and numerous movie premieres. Jay Z and Mariah Carey hosted parties there, and P. Diddy threw his son a birthday party where Nicki Minaj performed.

HQ2 Beach & Nightclub Having run some of New York’s most successful nightspots, including M2 Ultra Lounge, Pink Elephant, Crobar and Mansion, Joey Morrissey brings a wealth of experience to his latest venture, HQ2, a beach and nightclub at Atlantic City’s Ocean Resort Casino opening on Friday, June 29th with Diplo.

Nightlife innovator During Morrissey’s 30-years in the business, he pioneered nightlife innovations such as the use of promoters and the implementation of bottle service. Morrissey got his start creating parties while in high school in Brooklyn in the 1970s,

Once, when Beyoncé cancelled an appearance at his club, Morrissey had his lawyer send a letter threatening to sue, and the story went viral. Beyonce sent her manager to the club to apologize. She sent Morrissey tickets to her concert. “And she came by a few times with Jay Z,” he says. “She’s a great person,” he says.

Mark Wahlberg has a stake You can expect to see more famous faces at his newest venue, HQ2, opening in in Atlantic City at the new Ocean Resort Casino. Mark Wahlberg has taken an ownership stake in the property, that opens the previous day on June 28th, where he has opened a branch of his Wahburgers restaurant. He told Morrissey he’d be back for the opening.

DR. GINA SAM Celebrity Gastroenterologist By bennett marcus

Institute of Wellness

Public health foundation

Dr. Gina Sam is one of New York City’s leading gastroenterologists. Dr. Sam has appeared with CBS News’ Dr. Max Gomez and has also been featured in InStyle, Refinery29, Men’s Health, Cosmopolitan and more.

In addition to receiving her medical degree from Tufts University, Dr. Sam also earned a master’s in public health with a concentration in community health, and does a lot of outreach work with medical students in the Caribbean.

She is an expert in a specialized niche called “gastrointestinal motility,” which involves dysfunctions of the intestinal muscles. With more than ten years’ experience, Dr. Sam was the Director of the Gastrointestinal Motility Center at Mount Sinai Hospital. On June 8th she will re-open her own practice in called The Institute of Gastrointestinal Motility Disorders and Integrative Health at a new location (800 2nd Avenue). She will celebrate the opening with a masquerade party celebrating Caribbean Heritage Month. Dr. Sam says, “In this niche in motility, much of the brain and gut is related,” she says. “Your GI tract is actually all lined with neurotransmitters like serotonin receptors. So if you just had a death in the family, your stomach is going to feel it. So I tell my patient, I’m not treating your GI tract, I’m treating you as a person. It’s an institute of wellness.”

Caribbean Heritage Dr. Sam is an immigrant, born in Trinidad, raised in the U.S., the first in her family to graduate college, the first doctor. She wears Louboutins and Chanel, but never forgets who she is or where she came from. “I tell my patients, If you were my mom and dad I would do this. And they’re part of my extende family, that’s how I feel about my patients, regardless of economic status.”

Gastroenterology Explained In laymen’s terms, Dr. Sam offers the analogy of an auto mechanic. “They look at the car and say okay, there’s no scratches on the Ferrari, no bumps on the bumper. What I do is more like the mechanic gastroenterologist in that I open up the car and I test the engine, the function of the GI tract.” “Very few people have the skills as well as the ability to do this niche because it involves specialized technology,” she explains. “And these include diseases that are unusual and rare.” She also treats more common conditions reflux and IBS, and screens patients for colon cancer.

Treats her patients like family This has been her philosophy throughout her career, and the reason she decided to start her own practice. She takes the time to listen to her patients, many of whom have seen multiple gastroenterologists before coming to her. This practice will also merge Dr. Sam’s medical expertise with hand-picked partners offering wellness and personal services for an integrated whole-body service. Think, acupuncturists, massage therapists and personal trainers

She is in the process of starting the R and R Foundation for Global Health named after two friends who are no longer with us . This will be a gastroenterology mental health clinic for women, promoting health awareness and performing procedures like screening colonoscopies.

Pink Bow Project Olympic Gymnast Aly Raisman and Dylan Farrow, the daughter Mia Farrow and Woody Allen, are among the victims of childhood abuse that artist Karen Hawkins reached out to for The Pink Bow Project. The multi-media installation opened during National Child Abuse Prevention Month in Austin, Texas, and featured hundreds of voices of victims giving their first names and the age they were attacked. The first voice was Hawkins’ saying, “My name is Karen. I was ten years old.” The work included panels, covered in 52,000 pink hair bows representing the number of cases

Arthur Aidala & Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia Attorney Arthur Aidala recalled that his friend the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia said he kept grounded by reminding himself “Today a peacock, tomorrow a feather duster.” Scalia drew laughs when he used this line while being honored by the Columbian Lawyers Association in 1993. This year The Hon. Thomas Adams was given the Scalia Award for excellence in law at the Plaza. Aidala, whose wife, lawyer, Marianne Bertuna chaired the event, reminisced about his first meeting with Scalia in 1991 when he was a law student in Italy. The two bonded over an Italian meal Aidala made for the Justice and talked about their shared Sicilian heritage and love of the Yankees. The two remained dining companions until the conservative Justice’s death in 2016. On another night Mayor de Blasio helped Aidila celebrate his 50th birthday at the Dream Hotel. Guests appauading included Alan Dershowitz, Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez, Public Advocate Letitia James, and Fox News stars Kimberly Guilfoyle, Shepard Smith and Juan Williams.
