We moved around quite a bit for my father’s job, but mainly I grew up in Ohio and Michigan. I attended Michigan State University studying business and finance. Because of my desire and dreams of investment management, I moved to Chicago for the Midwest big city experience after graduation, but eventually moved back to Michigan to establish my own investment firm focusing on corporate retirement plans.
Erin and I got married in 1995, resided in Bloomfield Hills and had our beautiful children; Kelsey 26 an engineer, Katlyn, 24 in automotive sales and Andrew, 20 a sophomore at Michigan State University. After several years in the investment management business, focusing
on pensions and 401(k) plans, we sold our practice in 2012 to a banking institution. Still passionate about the industry, I was fortunate to consult and provide business development on behalf of another bank representing clients in Michigan and Ohio until they sold off their institutional division in 2019.
Next phase of life lead Erin and I to invest, purchase and secure the rights in Lee and Collier County for the franchise business, Roosters Men’s Grooming Center. In 2020, Erin and I moved here in paradise to embark on our new adventure, invest in the community, participate in some great charitable causes and become a part of the fabric in southwest Florida.

FINE: HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR BUSINESS CONCEPT AND WHEN DID YOU START?
BRAD: Roosters Men’s Grooming Center is a franchise offered through Regis Corp, which is one of the largest hair care franchisers in the country. Although, I did not come up with the concept, I was very intrigued when presented as a franchise opportunity from a consultant I was working with on investment and business opportunities. My first thought when the idea was mentioned to me was, what are you nuts, I don’t know a thing about barbershops and how the heck can I possibly be successful at this. In simple terms, its all about bringing together a great team of barbers and stylists with great personalities, in a fantastic location, all the while building lasting and loyal relationships.
Erin and I took a year to do our due diligence on the industry, franchiser and the franchise itself. We were lucky, there were two Roosters MGC’s in Michigan so my reconnaissance on the day- to-day operations was much easier than anticipated. In 2019, working with Regis we acquired the geographical rights to Collier and Lee County as a Roosters franchisee and prepaid the franchise fee for four shops. The live effective date of our Galleria Shoppes Roosters was February 1, 2020 and second store at Naples Plaza was June of 2021.
FINE: WHY IS NAPLES A GREAT PLACE FOR YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS?
BRAD: Similar too so many folks that now live or have a residence here, it started over 25 years ago vacationing in Lee and Collier County during the various holidays. We fell in love with the area for all the obvious reasons, in addition we appreciated the demographic growth, future plans for the city and surrounding area. More populace means more hair to cut and beards to trim.
From my prior finance career, I knew it was imperative to have a strong supportive Chamber of Commerce and wow was I blown away. The
Naples Chamber of Commerce is so involved in the development, support and growth of its small business members so I knew I would have a great team of experts to draw from.
The City of Naples and Collier County were also so welcoming and interested in our success from the very start. In fact, under strong COVID restrictions we were still able to get our build-out permits for our second store approved rather quickly. Most folks told me it would be months, but we were blessed and had our approvals within weeks.
FINE: WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE MAKES A BUSINESS SUCCESSFUL AND HOW DO YOU PERSONALLY DEFINE THAT?
BRAD: Roosters Men’s Grooming Center is in the personal wellness profession. I believe it can be one of the most difficult and rewarding experiences for both client, barber or stylist. We have an opportunity in a half hour to an hour to change/enhance the look and feel for our clients. You can’t lose ten pounds in a half hour, but a great haircut with some great conversation will leave you feeling confident, handsome and refreshed. If we do a great job, our clients will be back every three to six weeks, some even weekly.
In order, to achieve success in this business, I believe the most important element is by far our barbers and stylists. I will take an energetic, fun, positive, conversational and part time psychologist over technical expertise any day of the week. You can hone your technical skills, but pretty hard to change the person you are.
Other extremely important attributes; location, accessibility to/for your demographic target market, present a warm, inviting, comfortable and very important to me, a clean shop all at a reasonable rate for clients. Think of the old show “Cheers.”
FINE: HOW WAS COVID TIME FOR YOU AND DID YOU DO ANYTHING DIFFERENT TO OFFSET THAT TIME?
BRAD: Thank goodness we are here in Florida, and we have a Governor that took a balanced approach to the whole COVID issue. Erin and I acquired the Galleria Shoppes Roosters Men’s Grooming Center on February 1, 2020, and the first week of April, along with all other so called “nonessential” businesses, were asked to close because of lockdown orders. Since we were deemed to be in

phase II, we were fortunate to reopen five weeks after closing. Although, a short closing, rather troubling right after an acquisition with so many unknowns.
After the first three days of lockdowns and absolutely bored out of my mind, I decided to go into the shop to start a deep clean project and some refurbishing. Interestingly, because of the lockdown, we had turned off our online website and app booking, but our phone was ringing off the hook or we had messages every day to let clients know as soon as we were made aware of a reopening date so they could book an appointment for one of our services. Therefore, I had a grand idea to be at the shop everyday to answer the phone, talk with clients to build further rapport and take their name for an appointment. I promised everyone, once we were informed of a reopening date, I would call them back and get them booked to come in. I kept a yellow pad with every line filled in with client requests on about ten pages. It took me three full days to call everyone and get them booked for an appointment once we were given the green light to reopen. This allowed us to be fully booked on day one of reopening and didn’t have to suffer through any kind of slow ramp up of business.
Erin and I are very grateful to our clients who couldn’t wait to get back in the shop for an exceptional cut or fantastic shave from one of our team members.
FINE: LET’S HEAR ABOUT YOUR HOBBIES AND WHAT YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY ENJOY DOING… AND FEEL FREE TO TALK ABOUT YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS
BRAD: Erin and I absolutely love the Florida lifestyle and enjoy everything we can do outside. Right now, we are heavily involved in our stores, networking and some charity work, but probably to no surprise my passion is golf. We belonged to a Country Club for many years up north and were limited to six or seven months at best so the year round opportunity to play golf is fantastic.
Our adult children are in Michigan pursuing the professions and we get them down here during holidays or we visit them in the summer and maybe catch a Michigan State Spartan football game in the fall.
FINE: WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND ASPIRATIONS FOR THE FUTURE?
BRAD: As I stated earlier, Roosters Men’s Grooming Center is a franchise and with that provided great opportunities and flexibility with our goals and aspirations. We initially purchased the rights to Collier and Lee Counties giving us the opportunity to open Roosters Men’s Grooming Centers in locations we, along with the Franchiser, feel can and will be successful. We have our two shops in Naples and will continue to look for additional locations in Collier County, but for now are in search of a great location in Lee County. Because of all the growth in Estero and the request of many folks, we are strongly considering some locations there for our next shop.
FINE: IS THERE ANYTHING ABOUT YOUR INDUSTRY THAT YOU DO DIFFERENTLY FROM YOUR COMPETITORS?
BRAD: We strive to provide men with a customized experience through classic services and products that reaffirm what it means to look and feel like a 21st century man.
With that, our competitive differentiator comes from our barbers and stylist personalities, client service and professional skills. I would add, location, shop layout and feel are extremely important elements to the client experience so we can provide a convenient, warm and comfortable setting.

KEYS TO BETTER CHIPPING
No matter how good a player you are or how good your ball striking is, you are going to miss greens. Here are a couple keys to good chipping.
1. Ball position back to middle of your stance. This will keep the ball low.
2. Weight on your lead foot. Head behind the ball.
3. Lower body stays quiet. Solid base.
4. Chipping should be an extension of your putting stroke, arms and shoulders.
5. Keep your hands in front of the clubhead. This will allow the ball to stay low to the ground and run.
6. Light grip pressure, don’t squeeze the club.
7. Use a pitching wedge for short distances and not a lot of green to work with. Use an 8 iron when the pin is further away and a lot of green to work with. An 8 iron has less loft and therefore will run out more than a pitching wedge with essentially the same effort.
