Kate Wood ´02 TRUSTEE, MANAGING DIRECTOR AT G O L D M A N S AC H S

Confident she could make her mark, even in the historically male-dominated finance industry, Kate Wood continues to accomplish her goal. With 15 years at Goldman Sachs under her belt, Kate is currently a managing director at the prestigious banking firm — one of the most highly coveted positions on Wall Street. As readily as Kate has found career successes, she sees the potential for more women to become future leaders by way of the supportive community she experienced at WRA. Moving forward, she envisions an even more dynamic environment, in which students are challenged to exceed the world’s expectations and even more importantly, their own.

Ready to are two words that only begin to describe Jordanne Nichols. Taking action are two more—present in her many roles and responsibilities that have already set her apart. Jordanne was Student Body Co-President, Co-Leader of Black Student Union, a record-smashing Track & Field star, Silver Key writing recipient and heads to Cornell University this fall. Not surprisingly, it’s her conviction that shines the brightest. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, she stepped up to the podium in the Chapel and called on the community to take real action, so that we may one day reach a better tomorrow of which we all dream. A future Jordanne will, without a doubt, help accomplish.

in her WRA history, as the daughter of beloved French teachers Velia and Bob Pryce, she enjoys reminiscing about her family’s long legacy and growing up on campus. “I remember when WRA was an all-boys school, but it is impossible to imagine that now. I am struck by how quickly women became integral to the fabric of the school.” Currently, Cecily leads the Board’s College Counseling Committee, making great use of her interest in solving puzzles (none more challenging than college admissions) and planning for the future.

Seeing an unmet need, Dr. Sonia Minikel Vallabh has dedicated her life to finding a solution. Upon learning she had inherited a mutation that causes prion disease, a rapidly fatal and currently untreatable neurodegenerative disease that also affected her mother, she and her husband, Eric Minikel, opened and now run their own prion research laboratory at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Today, Sonia continues testing drugs that might prevent, delay and treat this illness. In the process, she has gained a perspective sure to help future scientists and advocates. “There is no one better situated to speak out, and speak up, than you.”

Exuding incredible kindness and grace that makes you forget that she’s only just started her Reserve journey. This past spring, during one of our Morning Meetings, she took a seat at the piano on the Chapel stage to perform Franz Liszt’s Consolation No. 3 in D Flat Major. Performance is often a part of our Morning Meetings, but it is not often that a freshman has the courage to do so. Jiaxi not only played the piece perfectly, she also gently held the room’s attention and gave her peers an interlude of peace, stillness and an appreciation for beautiful things. What a gift to receive. What a gift to have her in our community.

Philanthropy is practically synonymous with the name Lydia Eppig Harrington. As Trustee of the Sears-Swetland Family Foundation and of the Ron and Lydia Harrington Family Foundation, Lydia works with Cleveland-area nonprofits that address environmental health, sustainable economic growth and livable communities, tackling problems such as affordable housing, healthcare access, job training and more. Within her work, she pays annual visits to 50 nonprofits, helping to secure their efforts and ensure continued success. To her, there is nothing more inspiring than meeting the people who are transforming Cleveland into a better, more equitable and thriving community. A loyal friend to Western Reserve Academy, Lydia is an alumna, a Pioneer Pair (married Ron Harrington '87) and current parent, with her son Will ’26 a wonderful addition to our community.

Impactful is the lasting impression her Powerfully negotiating international trade agreements is challenging, pressure-filled, highly sensitive and for Meredith, simply her area of expertise. As a former trade negotiator and Chairman of the U.S. International Trade Commission, she worked to gain bipartisan consensus for politically difficult trade agreements, including NAFTA, China’s succession to the World Trade Organization and the African Growth and Opportunity Act. She led the U.S. negotiating team to reduce tariff and non-tariff barriers on industrial goods and successfully concluded an innovative trade agreement with the European Union, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. first days have made on the trajectory of Charlotte’s life. Her ahead-of-thegame start, in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Cleveland Clinic, fuels an energy—and a connection to that institution—that courses through her like a strong current. In the years since, she’s hosted benefit concerts with proceeds going to the NICU. She’s been involved in the WRA Cancer Immunology program using cancer cells from the Clinic. So, of course, her bright future may land there as well—by way of Case Western Reserve University, where Charlotte is studying dance and biology. Outside of her career interests, she’s an experienced flutist, a ballet, jazz and modern dancer, and quite the conversationalist. In Mandarin. Of course!

important to most teenagers, however, VaLanDria’s story has quite a bit more to it. At age 14 she started her own health and beauty company, Coarse Culture, which provides all-natural, cruelty-free products for skin and hair. The idea started at her mom’s kitchen table in South Side, Chicago. VaLanDria wanted to create a product that would help restore health to her mother’s hair, which had become brittle and dry after her lupus diagnosis. So, she got to work whipping up a shea butter solution and in the process, creating a company. But she didn’t stop there. Proud describes Amy’s past, present and future ties to Reserve. Both she and her husband Tyler '97 are WRA graduates — and their legacy continues as their son, Johnny, joins the Class of 2027. After working in New York City for Disney Theatrical on Broadway and the Public Theatre, Amy accepted a job with the Cleveland Orchestra and returned to Hudson. She subsequently worked at the Summa Foundation and owned her own fundraising consulting business. As the Director of Leadership Giving, she works alongside her mother Ruth to ensure WRA maintains a strong financial future and amazing educational experiences for future generations.

Bright ideas have guided this talented writer from her former life as a middle school language arts teacher to a published author of five young adult novels, to a polished and inventive communicator, graphic designer and ideator working with WRA. Laura serves as a mentor for College Now Greater Cleveland, volunteers with WRA 2016 graduate Maria Paparella’s Chair-ity and was a founding Board Member of 100 Women Strong OHIO. A woman of many talents and boundless energy, Laura credits the universe as an ongoing influence. “I've seen TWO shooting stars or comets or events in the past year.
