THE FUTURE BELONGS TO THE PIONEER

Western Reserve Academy has been ranked the #1 Boarding School and Private High School in Ohio and high among the nation’s top boarding and day schools. 100% of our graduates go on to attend 4-year colleges or universities, many at the most selective schools in the world. Architectural Digest named WRA the most beautiful private school in Ohio. And while we are proud of these accolades, we are more interested in your dreams and aspirations.

“AT WRA WE ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE SURROUNDED BY PEOPLE WHO CARE ABOUT IMPORTANT THINGS. WE DON’T GO TO A NORMAL HIGH SCHOOL, WE GO TO A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE FEEL IT IS IMPORTANT TO SHARE THEIR OPINIONS. WHEN I SHADOWED AT RESERVE AT 13 YEARS OLD, THERE WERE PEOPLE IN MY ART CLASS DISCUSSING POLITICS. THIS WAS SOMETHING NEW TO ME AND SOMETHING I WANTED MORE OF. I WASN’T INTERESTED IN GOING TO A HIGH SCHOOL LIKE THOSE DISPLAYED IN MOVIES — THEIR CLIQUES AND CONSTANT DRAMA. I WANTED A PLACE WHERE I COULD GROW BOTH AS A STUDENT AND A PERSON … AND I FOUND THAT HERE AT RESERVE.”

—CHLOE ZAMPELLI ’18

WELCOME HOME Walking the brick paths of Western Reserve Academy’s historic campus in Hudson, Ohio, puts you at the heart of American pioneering, perseverance and the pursuit of excellence. This is more than our school, it is our home.

A PLACE TO BELONG That’s what it means to be at a boarding school. From the moment you step onto WRA’s campus, you’ll notice something different. Our residential tradition means care is everywhere, and opportunities are endless. There’s more beauty and breathing room than most high schools. And our Midwestern style exudes warmth. We also have a cozy downtown right at our doorstep so you’re just seconds away from coffee shops, restaurants, and making memories with your friends.

A WORLD-CLASS ACADEMIC CHALLENGE We help bring your dreams to life through an academic program that’s on the cutting edge of a classical education. Our curriculum, called one of the most innovative in the country, blends challenging college prep coursework with exciting learning opportunities you won’t find at any other school. All of this is in the spirit of diversity of thought and learning, because every Pioneer blazes their own path.

A GROUNDBREAKING EDUCATION We are the first school in our region to move beyond Advanced Placement courses, ending the need to teach to the test and offering more immersive courses we call College Level. We’re the only high school that offers cancer immunology courses and our students conduct research at Case Western University and the Cleveland Clinic. We’ve also been named the best school in the state for STEM, thanks to our Wang Innovation Center, a 6,000-square-foot, hands-on, high-tech idea incubator.

WHY BOARDING? It gives you the chance to try new things, build amazing friendships, challenge yourself, gain independence, figure out what inspires you, and discover all that you can achieve when given the opportunity.

THE ADVENTURE BEGINS Pioneers go beyond — they are the pathfinders, the explorers, the trailblazers. They go further than what might be expected of them. This curiosity and enterprising spirit is in your DNA, and ours.

AN EXPERIENCE WITHOUT BORDERS Reserve provides opportunities that take you outside of the classroom ... and miles outside of the box. You might find yourself studying poetry in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Maybe you’ll secure an elite internship at a renowned medical research center. Or perhaps you’ll travel to Guatemala to immerse yourself in another culture and help local children learn. At Reserve, there are no limits to your dreams and potential.

“RESERVE WAS THE BEGINNING OF MY GREAT ADVENTURE.” —PATRICK OPPMANN ’96, CNN REPORTER

INTERNATIONAL IMMERSIONS AROUND THE WORLD INCLUDING

GERMANY, ENGLAND, FRANCE, COSTA RICA, ITALY AND CHINA

OUR INDEPENDENT CURRICULUM MEANS MORE EXPLORATION AND OPPORTUNITIES, AND BETTER OUTCOMES What if you changed your expectations of high school? Looked beyond crowded hallways, jam-packed schedules and standardized tests? At WRA, our innovative academic program sets us apart from any other school.

A FULLY INDEPENDENT CURRICULUM We are the first school in our region to move beyond Advanced Placement courses, ending the need to teach to the test. Teachers can dive deeper and your mind can stretch further. Our highest level courses are called College Level, and offer advanced topics like Latin Literature, Multivariable Calculus and Pathology of Human Disease. This year, we are offering 24 CL courses.

LITERACIES We have developed a Literacies program in response to a changing, technologically driven and information-rich world. As the world has changed, so has the idea of what it means to be “literate.” Through intentional design and instruction, WRA will offer a sequence of required courses: freshmen will take Learning to Make and Learning to Code and sophomores will take Learning to Communicate and Learning to Live Well.

TIME FOR BALANCE Our innovative daily schedule allows for deeper learning, labs, group work, research and projects. The rotating schedule includes four 75-minute meetings per course every seven-day cycle. A built-in Academic Plus (A+) period, one hour when no classes are scheduled, gives students time for community, collaboration, guest speakers, extra help and study.

“THE MOST IMPORTANT REWARD YOU CAN RECEIVE IS YOUR OWN REALIZATION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF HOW SPECIAL AND IMPORTANT YOU ARE, NOT ONLY TO THE WRA COMMUNITY, BUT TO EVERYONE YOU WILL ENCOUNTER HERE AND MEET IN THE FUTURE. EVERYONE HAS A SPECIAL GIFT THAT WILL COME TO LIGHT WHEN YOUR TIME IS RIGHT. HOLD ONTO THIS GIFT, BE PROUD OF IT, EXPLORE IT, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY SHARE IT WITH THE WORLD. SHARE IT ALWAYS KEEPING IN MIND THAT OTHERS NEED YOUR GIFT, YOUR LIGHT, TO HELP THEM SHINE.” —WANDA BOESCH, SCIENCE DEPARTMENT CHAIR

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Lunch today was Chicken Alfredo, Garlic Breadsticks, and Pound Cake with Whipped Cream! With all the different options that the dining hall provides, it’s hard not to be satisfied. After lunch I have a free period, so I’ll be able to relax in my room and get some work done. #WRAtakeover @flikisdining

NEARLY TWO CENTURIES OF TRADITION WRA’s rich tapestry of traditions have been passed along for generations. We’re proud to introduce you to just a few of the time-honored (and newly minted) rituals that make us who we are.

MORNING MEETING Morning Meeting is a brief assembly in the Chapel on Mondays and Fridays. Led by the student body co-presidents, Morning Meeting is a place to make announcements and celebrate accomplishments.

VICTORY BELL No matter what time teams return to campus from a win, student-athletes take a turn ringing the Victory Bell.

BENCH SWING Thanks to its starring role on our very favorite episode of ABC’s The Bachelor in 2016, the bench swing is a little bit famous.

SADIE’S The girls invite the boys to the annual Sadie Hawkins dance.

SIT DOWN MEALS Sit Down Meals are a time to gather around the dinner table with your advisor and fellow advisees.

CHAPEL The WRA Chapel is at the center of campus and one of our many buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.

VESPERS Vespers is a special holiday concert where candles are lit and songs are sung. After this cherished event, a family style meal is served for friends and family.

A team of students built a prosthetic capable of sensing flexes in an amputee’s arm and translating those flexes into robotic movements.

One of the most popular projects in the Wang Center is building longboards — a favorite mode of transportation across Reserve’s 190 acres.

Leo Holland ‘17 ‘sewed’ the seeds of innovation when he repurposed textiles to create a line of vintage bow ties — launching a company called “Restyled Reserve.”

Students are able to explore a wide array of possibilities, from learning electronics and soldering to woodworking and coding — even building and flying their own drone.

ATHLETICS

RING THE BELL When it comes to high school sports, it’s advantage Reserve. Our facilities rival what you’ll find at top colleges and our coaches are your biggest fans. Whether you are pursuing a collegiate sports career (approximately 20 percent of our Pioneers play sports at the country’s most distinctive universities) or you just like the balance that athletics bring to your life (yoga and meditation are non-interscholastic options), you’ll be a part of a spirited athletic program with nearly two centuries of tradition.

SIGNATURE PROGRAMS & SOCIAL MISSION

LUX ET VERITAS Lux et Veritas, or Light and Truth, is a guiding principle of WRA that has inspired Pioneers to live with courage and honesty for hundreds of years. The words are emblazoned on a seal in the foyer of our Athletic Center (lore has it that if you step on the seal you won’t graduate!) and serve as a constant reminder of a purpose bigger than ourselves. In this spirit, Reserve’s signature programs and social mission come to life. Not for the sake of putting points on the board for college, but instead to leave a permanent mark on your mind and in your heart.

CURRICULUM SPOTLIGHT: CANCER IMMUNOLOGY

PIONEERING A BRIGHTER FUTURE Dr. Robert Aguilar’s Cancer Immunology class isn’t easy. Cancer research — indeed, all scientific research — requires meticulous attention to detail, continuous rounds of trial and error and the resolve to persevere in the face of failure and learn from it. But WRA students don’t shy away from hard work. Better yet, they are eager to pour their energy into a meaningful and worthwhile cause.

“WHEN OUR STUDENTS GO TO CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY OR THE CLEVELAND CLINIC FOR INTERNSHIPS, THOSE RESEARCHERS NOTICE RIGHT AWAY THAT THE KIDS DON’T HAVE TO LEARN THE TECHNIQUES, THEY’RE JUMPING RIGHT IN AND THAT’S WHAT THEY LOVE!” —DR. ROBERT AGUILAR, WRA SCIENCE FACULTY, CLEVELAND CLINIC RESEARCHER Cancer Immunology is divided into first-, second- and third-year students. The second and third years have either one or two previous Cancer Immunology courses with Dr. Aguilar under their belts. They act as advisors to the first years, and part of their grade is determined by how effectively and accurately they instruct and mentor the new researchers.

THE REAL DEAL “THERE SHOULD BE A SCHOOL IN THE REGION THAT BOTH CONNECTS TO THE WORLD-RENOWNED CLEVELAND CLINIC AND ENDEAVORS TO BUILD A PIPELINE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF MEDICAL PIONEERS. WE ARE VERY PROUD OF DR. AGUILAR, OUR STUDENTS AND THIS PROGRAM, THE ONLY ONE OF ITS TYPE ANYWHERE IN THE COUNTRY.” —CHRISTOPHER D. BURNER ‘80, WRA HEAD OF SCHOOL There is nothing theoretical or simulated in WRA’s Cancer Immunology. Pioneers work with real cancer cells donated by the Cleveland Clinic. The software and lab equipment at their disposal rivals the labs inside the very same world-renowned institution. This is, in part, thanks to Dr. Aguilar’s connection to the Clinic as a visiting scientist and active researcher.

FIND YOUR VOICE From pliés to painting, performances to photography, WRA offers endless opportunities to unleash your artistic side, guided by a talented and accomplished faculty. Our Knight Fine Arts Center (KFAC) is the creative heart of campus, with beautiful workspaces, studios, galleries and stages. And since creativity never sleeps, you have access to our arts spaces morning to evening, every day of the week. The arts are also avenues to the world, with performances that take you farther.

“WE SPENT OUR FIRST THREE NIGHTS AT A CASTLE IN CARDONA. ON OUR FIRST NIGHT, WHEN I ASKED FOR A SMALL PLACE TO REHEARSE, THE HOTEL MANAGER SAID THEY WERE TOO FULL TO LET US HAVE THE CONFERENCE ROOM AND ASKED ME TO COME BACK AND HE’D CHECK FOR SOMETHING ELSE. WHEN HE CAME BACK, I WAS GIVEN THE KEYS TO AN 11TH CENTURY ROMANESQUE CHURCH! TRULY A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE. WE PERFORMED DAYS LATER IN A MUCH NEWER 13TH CENTURY CHURCH.” —MIDGE KARAM ‘79, FINE & PERFORMING ARTS FACULTY, SPEAKING ABOUT A SPRING MUSIC TRIP TO SPAIN

SHARE THE SPOTLIGHT Besides the big productions each year — including three stage performances and two dance performances — maybe you’ll try an Open Mic Night or Broadway Backwards in the Green Key. At Reserve, the arts are everywhere, and they welcome everyone. Our athletes are actors just as our artists are analysts. We purposely blur lines on the path to well-roundedness.

HAPPY HOMETOWN

OUR TOWN Reserve is unlike any other boarding school because, alongside our beautiful and historic campus, we have a charming town just steps away. In fact, we consider Hudson part of us, and our students are part of Hudson. The town’s unmissable landmark — the Hudson Clock Tower — is in the middle of favorite hangouts, mixing the charm of a historic town with every modern amenity. Hudson’s streets, lined with restored century homes, also include shops, inns and dining options that round out the exciting offerings in our nook of Northeast Ohio.

Pioneers are leaders. That means being bold and resourceful. Taking risks. Fearlessly pursuing challenges and opportunities. You don’t have to be a certain age to be a leader. Opportunities to inspire others, do more, learn more and be more are embedded in our Reserve culture and open to everyone.

“INTEGRITY IS WHAT YOU DO TO HELP OTHERS WHEN NO ONE IS LOOKING.” —SARA WROBLEWSKI ‘09, FOUNDER OF ONE BEAD Maybe you’ll captain a team, sit on the honor council, act as a prefect in your dorm or work as a campus ambassador with the Admission Office. Or, maybe you’ll start a new club, to push your passion and add to our list of over 50 opportunities to gather, grow and lead. We love that Reserve took shape around leading-edge ideas. Western expansion. Promoting the abolitionist movement. Our alumni carry forward this spirit and are leaders in their careers — from renewable energy to social entrepreneurship to life-changing medical discoveries. They also make a difference in their communities, whether local or global. WRA has always been a pioneering place where leaders go, grow and launch.
