“Models of Practices and Innovations in Student Affairs and Services” As the national organization of student affairs practitioners, we aim to prepare ourselves in meeting the expectations of a new generation of students. With the current challenges posed by the new normal, the practitioners of Student Affairs and Services (SAS) should be empowered and capable of coming up with evidenced-based solutions that would support the diverse needs of students.

The PAPSAS, Inc. Research Conference 2021 serves as a platform in highlighting innovative initiatives and practices employed by the student affairs and services practitioners in implementing programs and services. The conference features studies related to the following research streams: Ø Ø Ø Ø Ø

It is with great honor and pleasure that I welcome all of you to the virtual PAPSAS, Inc., Research Conference 2021.

This event is a manifestation of our attempt to highlight the best and innovative practices of our fellow student affairs and services (SAS) practitioners in delivering their programs and services in the form of scholarly outputs.

Through this initiative, we aspire to inspire more SAS practitioners to see the value of research as an empirical tool to help in continuously improving the dynamic function of student affairs and services. The challenge of the pandemic has revealed our genuine desire to support our students through the continuous delivery of programs and services for student development and student welfare. And we are happy to have provided a platform where these models of practices and innovations will be showcased and shared to the PAPSAS community.

The parallel sessions will feature the studies of our colleagues coming from the different regions of the country. They will tell stories about diverse topics of concern that relates to their own experiences and felt needs of the students and community they serve.

I congratulate all the presenters and extend my gratitude to all the attendees. May we all be inspired to learn to be able to do more and appreciate our purpose as we accompany our students towards holistic development and success.

Welcome Message To all the participants of the PAPSAS Research Conference 2021: The knowledge–based economy and eventually the 4th Industrial Revolution compel the educational system to produce graduates that are equipped with the 21st century competencies. Thus, higher education institutions (HEI) constantly review and restructure their curriculum to be relevant to the signs of the times. This means that HEIs ensure that their students are highly engaged in learning; and that their faculty members are competent to provide the students with all the opportunities for learning.

The student affairs and services (SAS) practitioners have a great role to play in this continuum of learning by way of creating an environment that nurtures high level of learning engagement and life skills development among the students.

The various social issues and the current pandemic that the whole world is experiencing are great challenges to the SAS practitioners. The pandemic has created a turning point in the world’s history. This phenomenon calls for deeper understanding of the factors, issues, experiences, and trends that are affecting student learning, growth and development.

The research component of every SAS office is now emerging as “must” practice. The SAS practitioners today must develop research competence that is needed to understand the current generation of students and the challenges that they face. Research will enable SAS practitioners to introduce evidence – based interventions, programs, projects, and activities that will prepare the students for the world characterized by the 4th Industrial Revolution.

The Philippine Association of Practitioners of Student Affairs and Services (PAPSAS) has committed itself to the development of research culture in the area of student affairs and services. The researches of SAS practitioners will potentially contribute to the emergence of the body of knowledge in the art and science of SAS practice in the country.

This year’s Research Conference dramatizes such commitment. Henceforth, the PAPSAS shall zealously provide avenues for the SAS practitioners in the country to present their research outputs and opportunity to publish the same in Our Asia-Pacific Journal of Student Affairs.

Keynote Speaker Dr. Roger B. Ludeman

President Emeritus International Association of Student Affairs and Services Editor-in-Chief, IASAS-DSW Book - SAS in Higher Education: Global Foundations, Issues, and Best Practices, 3rd Edition

Roger Ludeman has spent his entire career working with students at all levels of U.S. public education with the last 35 years being in higher education student affairs and services.

He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1973.

Roger entered student affairs work in 1967 serving in senior level student affairs positions in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Most of his writing and research was in international education. Roger initiated the NASPA International Symposium and International Exchange Program in 1996.

Roger’s serves as editor-in-chief of the new IASAS – Deutsches Studentenwerk (DSW) 201920 book on student affairs and services around the world. He has served as a consultant for numerous students, institutions and organizations all over the world, the latest being in Turkey. He received three Fulbright grants (Germany, Japan and South Africa). Roger is founder of IASAS and President Emeritus.

In addition to volunteering at homeless shelters in Eugene, Oregon, he also has been active in supporting gay rights and serving on boards of several community organizations.

He currently sings in both the Eugene Concert Choir and the Eugene Symphony Chorus.

He and his wife, Sandy, together have 6 children and 4 grandchildren.

ABSTRACT The paper describes the 5-year experience of the Bicol University Office of Student Affairs and Services (OSAS) in responding to the challenges of managing its student welfare services program specifically on suicide prevention and achieving the zero suicide for the last three years prior to pandemic. The study was carried out using case study analysis through document analysis framework of available student welfare accomplishment and case reports, interviews of students, and focus group discussion of student affairs practitioners in the University. The findings showed that the recorded referrals on student cases along anxiety, depression, among others, and suicide from 2015 to 2019 have declined from 279 to 100 cases with 3 deaths due to suicide in the first two years as covered in study. With this, a student welfare management action was developed, implemented and evaluated by the University which yield positive and exemplary results in achieving suicide-free campus. The said management action centers on: revisiting and rethinking the University guidance and other program dynamics; entering into an external linkage and partnership in providing depression and suicide awareness advocacy campaigns; requiring the student councils and student-based organizations/societies to advocate mental health in their program of activities; realigning the University SAS and establishing the OSAS in response to the CHED SAS regulations; and strengthening the para and peer counseling development program of the University. As a result, the University “Suicide-Free Campus” Functional Model was developed based from the 5year experience of the OSAS in enhancing its student welfare program.

Effects of Chronic Exercise on the Executive Functions and Mathematics Achievement of Elementary Students 1 University

Regular exposure to physical activity (PA) has numerous health-related benefits including better physical fitness (PF). However, PA in schools is only limited to PE. To promote PA in schools, positive effects of increased PA in academic performance have been researched on, with recent findings suggesting that the mind and body are connected because the brain is activated more during and after chronic exposure to PA. The research investigated the effects of a 4-week afterschool chronic exercise program on Mathematics achievement and executive functions (EF) of elementary students. It utilized a quasi-experimental pre and posttest research design to two comparable fifthgrade sections assigned as either the control or experimental group. The experimental group scored better than the control group in Mathematics, Stroop test, and Fitness Test.

However, there was no significant difference in the other components of EF and body mass index (BMI). All EF core skills were correlated with Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT). Results suggest that additional minutes for exercise improve mathematical performance and fitness levels. Participation in the 4-week chronic exercise program significantly improved math achievement of fifth-grade students. Implications for effective learning include incorporating PA in school programs, as a 30-minute PA done on a regular basis shows positive effects on academic scores and does not hamper learning, highlighting not only the physical effects of an exercise program, but its effects on mental improvement as well.

Raising the Flag: An Appreciative Inquiry of Special Programs of the International School of Asia and the Pacific Aristotle Gonzales

ABSTRACT The International School of Asia and the Pacific established Special Programs known as Discovery Weekend, Friendship Camp, Camp of Colors, Success Plus and Advisorship Class.

The unique features of ISAP’s educational structure were based on its institution’s philosophy, mission, vision, objectives and core values. This study aimed to know the perception of the International School of Asia and the Pacific graduates to the Special Programs and its impact to their Professional Development. 20 samples were identified using a purposive type of sampling. A structured close-ended questionnaire was used to extract the needed data through the means of electronic questionnaire provided by Google Survey Form. An Appreciative inquiry was used to analyze the data. Discovery weekend program is an instrument that help the respondents in reviving their relationship to God as well as to their families; Friendship Camp is an instrument that helps the respondents to develop ‘friendship’ and camaraderie through recreational activities; Camp of Colors is a recreational activity that helps the respondents developed awareness toward their own selves (‘Self-awareness’); and Success Plus is a seminar and recreational activity that motivates & prepares the respondents for the real world – world of professionals and allows them to know how to define and achieve the true meaning of ‘Success’. Also, the experiences brought by these Special Programs were an excellent and memorable life changing experiences that uplifts wise & intelligent decisions, teaches art of controlling emotions, promotes positivity, develops a mentally, emotionally, socially and spiritually mature person and ensures students’ preparedness for the world of professionals. Lastly, the programs contributed to the Professional Development of the respondents which allows them to learn self-confidence, time management, solve problems, and develop friendship & camaraderie. The analysis of data revealed that special programs have great impact on the graduates most predominantly the Success Plus program had the greatest impact unto them. Finally, these special programs have so much impact to respondents in becoming a holistic professional, as what they were now; ready to face the real world – world of professionals.

Strategies in Organizing Student Development Programs during the COVID-19 Pandemic 1 University

COVID-19 Pandemic is a huge challenge in the world that brought us to societal change.

To address the different concerns and issues, the government and different organizations tried to develop and address them in as many ways as possible. One of the concerns is in the field of education. The government institution for education and the academicians are trying to develop ways to provide an effective and efficient mode of learning to students. But there are also main concerns aside from the learning process of the students - the ways of organizing student development programs that can only be conducted online. This paper used the qualitative research approach that gathers selected school heads and practitioners to identify different patterns in organizing student development programs during the pandemic. The researcher gathered the participants through a group discussion in a private Facebook group and used descriptive analysis to analyze the data gathered. The results of this paper discuss the following strategies in organizing student development programs: (1) consideration of the main needs of the students before setting what to organize during the pandemic (contextual); (2) prioritizing the wellbeing of the students during the pandemic; (well-being); (3) recalibrating the goals of the programs based on the current situation of the country (strategic); (4) streamlining programs into interesting and learning-filled activities that are held online (interestbased); (5) Improving skills of the organizers through different pieces of online training (directing). Thus, this paper revealed those five points strategies to create meaningful student development programs during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Abstract The covid-19 pandemic has affected the lives of every people around the world. According to Taylor et al. (2020) it brought psychological stress such as 1. Danger and fear of contamination, 2. Socio-economic consequences of fear, 3. Xenophobia, 4. Traumatic stress symptoms, and 5. Compulsive checking and reassurance checking. Knowledge of how these factors affected Filipino adolescents, adults, and LGBQ students living in the province is limited. The study's primary purpose was to determine the level of stress among adolescents and adult students living in the Philippine region. Nine-hundred thirty (930) students participated in the study (First-year College and Junior High School students, n=724; Graduate Students, n=206). Result showed that when the participants are grouped according to gender: 30.67% male (n=23), 65.33% female (n=49), and 4% LGBQ (n=3) experienced high level of Covid-19 stress-related symptoms can be found among adult students while 27.03% male (n=10), 67.57% female (n=25), and 5.41% LGBQ (n=2) scored lower level of stress.

Likewise, among adolescent students, 31.32% male (n=83), 66.79% female (n=177), and 1.89% LGBQ (n=5) experienced high level of stress while 43.86% male (n=50), 52.63% (n=60), and 3.51% LGBQ (n=4) reported to have low stress level. Moreover, female adolescents and adults were found to have higher Covid-19 stress-related symptoms. Consequently, k-means scores showed that 36.60% of adolescent students scored high (mean scores of 2.78-4.00) while 15.7% scored low (mean scores of .00-1.69). Meanwhile, among adult students, 36.4% scored a higher level of stress (mean scores of 2.81-4), and 45.6% reported having a lower level of stress (mean scores of .03-1.81). Also, adolescent students are prone to experience higher stress levels than adult students living in the Philippine region. Adult students may have established better coping mechanisms compared to adolescents. The researchers discussed the importance of designing and providing an evidence-based psychological intervention to address the participants' needs. A qualitative study may also be conducted to unveil the phenomenon of stress-related experiences among adults, adolescents, and LGBQ students to better explain the current study results.

Are We Offering Satisfaction? Students’ Perception Towards Institutional Student Program and Services of JRMSU-TC Gemarie Baquiller Jose Rizal Memorial State University-Tampilisan Campus ABSTRACT The implementation of different institutional student services and programs is significant as an academic support service. However, the acid test whether these programs are satisfying to the clients is a paramount consideration. This is the direction of the study; to determine students’ level of satisfaction towards the institutional student services and programs in Jose Rizal Memorial State University- Tampilisan Campus. The study utilized the descriptive survey research design using a self-made questionnaire to the 341 students who are chosen randomly. Frequency count was used to find out the profile of the respondents in terms of sex and academic program enrolled, whereas weighted mean was employed to determine students’ level of satisfaction towards the different institutional services and programs of the University. Based on the data gathered and analyzed, all the programs which include admission, scholarships and financial assistance, health services, student housing, multi-faith, socio- cultural and sports development program were all rated “much satisfied” by the students.

Recommendation was offered to improve student’s rating and satisfaction level in as much as quality service is an utmost consideration in the academe.

Awareness, Availment, Assessment and Importance of Student Services Margen A. Java1, Gift D. Tragico2, & Maredil R. Ambos3 1Central Philippine University, 1 majava@cpu.edu.ph 2 Central Philippine University, 2 gtragico@cpu.edu.ph 3Central Philippine University, 3mrambos@cpu.edu.ph ABSTRACT This descriptive-relational study was conducted to determine the awareness, availment, assessment and importance of student services among the 361 students of Central Philippine University during the School Year 2018 - 2019. A revised duly validated and reliability tested questionnaire was used and ethical considerations for the study were followed. Data were analyzed using frequency count, percentages, Chi Square, Cramer’s V, and Gamma. The findings are: the profile of the respondents show that there are more females than males; younger group, Roman Catholics, first and fourth year students from the Colleges of Business and Accountancy, Engineering and Arts and Sciences; coming from barangays; graduated from either public or private high schools either located in the cities or towns; and, are living with their parents in their own house while studying in the university. The respondents are very much aware of the existence of the student services and programs of the university during the two school years of the survey (2015 and 2018), have attached a great value upon the existence of these student services and programs in the university; are aware and have availed of the services and programs under the VPSA. Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions are drawn: the respondents’ place of origin is significantly related to the importance they attach to student services and programs in general of the university. The respondents’ awareness of student services and programs under the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs is significantly related to their availment and assessment of these services and programs.

Evaluation of Student Affairs and Services on Students’ Academic Performance: A Model Mark Raymond S. Tan, EdD Capitol University, markraymondtan@gmail.com ABSTRACT This study explores the significant relationship that exists between the extent of implementation of student affairs and services and student’s academic performance.

The descriptive – correlational and causal research designs were employed using a researcher-made survey instrument. It was conducted in one private higher education institution in the city with graduating students as respondents. The data collected from the accomplished questionnaires were analyzed and interpreted through correlation and multiple regression analysis. The findings revealed that there exists a significant relationship between the level of awareness, acceptability, relevance, dissemination of student affairs and services’ vision, mission, goals, and objectives and extent of implementation of student affairs and services on students’ academic performance. In the same way, programs and services under Student Welfare Services which includes Information and Orientation Services and Guidance and Counseling and Institutional Student Programs and Services that includes Scholarship and Financial Assistance, Health Services, Sports Development Program, and Social and Community Involvement were found to be predictor variables to students’ academic performance. Also, 𝑅" or the coefficient of determination is .442, indicates that 44.2% of the differences in the academic performance of students are explained by the predictor variables. It is, therefore, safe to surmise that one way to improve the student’s academic performance is through careful evaluation of the direct or indirect contribution/effect of student affairs and services to the student’s academic pursuit and increasing or decreasing the extent of implementation of the predictor/explanatory variables mentioned above – tweaking or modifying some of its existing student affairs and services programs to generate a more positive student performance.

ABSTRACT Intelligence is a subject matter that has been debated over the years. The questions on what really are the components of intelligence or is there really an accurate way to test exactly what intelligence is, are just few of the matters to consider. Intelligence as a concept cannot define in a simple context because it speaks in a broader perception.

This study aimed to assess the intelligence score of the freshman students of MCNP Academic Year 2018-2019. A descriptive correlational research design was used to 624 student’s test result using the Panukat ng Katalinuhang Pilipino as the standard tool to assess the Intelligence score of the respondents. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the scores of the students while chi-square was also used on the test of relationship between the intelligence score and the profile of the respondents. Result shows that, crystallized intelligence score of students vary from Very Poor to Low Average, while the fluid intelligence is on the Average to Very High respectively. Test of relationship shows that there is a relationship between sex and fluid intelligence.

ABSTRACT The paper describes the 60 days during the government declared Enhanced and General Community Quarantine experiences of the Bicol University Office of Student Affairs and Services (BU-OSAS) based on reflective inquiry on the corresponding key issues and challenges in managing its support to student programs. The study utilized document analysis framework of available student affairs and services (SAS) accomplishment/ anecdotal and/or case reports, survey, and interviews of students and focus group discussion of student affairs practitioners in the University via messenger. The study showed that the present BU OSAS functional model and organigram as a support to student mechanisms in the University are well defined and responsive in the midst of crisis.

The researchers realized that managing SAS diverges depending on the phases of situations such as pre-crisis, crisis, and post-crisis response that defined the SAS management of actions from the normal to critical leading to the new normal management of student services. This was also shown in the engagements of the BUOSAS system were planning- implementation-assessment scheme demarcated as define-engage-review in a developmental order where integral part of the system. As a result, the student welfare is the center of the SAS Crisis Management Model which should be timely and responsive where its governance encompasses the strategies, directions and control as translated to management that are processed-based and grounded on identity, analysis, measure and response, and compliance in adherence to government regulations and school policies, documentations and reporting.

The Student Affairs of the University serves as an office to deliver services and programs that are concerned in supporting the academic experiences of students to attain holistic student development. This includes student welfare and support services, student discipline and the guidance services. During the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the delivery on student services was challenged due to limited mobility and resources. In this study, it made use of descriptive design and purposive sampling. Student leaders and locally stranded students served as the respondents. With this, the students’ feedback through a series of surveys, consultations and interviews were employed to ensure that students were supported at these trying times. Based on the findings, the OSA team with the full support of the University implemented various projects and programs (i.e. Ayuda, E-Counseling, Student Leaders’ Capability Building Training-Workshop via Zoom, Virtual Week of Welcome, etc.) to provide support to the needs of the students. Hence, this research-based delivery of services was needed to become efficient and effective in providing assistance to the students amidst the pandemic, limited access and resources.

It is then recommended to update the Documented Procedures Manual (DPM) in accordance to ISO:2015 standards and revisit the various programs of the office to adapt and sustain to this new normal.

Evaluation of the University Student Council Online Co-/Extracurricular Activities: The Centro Escolar University Makati Experience Maria Corazon L. Andoy, Ph.D. Centro Escolar University-Makati, clandoy@ceu.edu.ph ABSTRACT This paper presents the results of the evaluation of the activities of the University Student Council-Makati, the highest governing body of the institution, during this COVID-19 pandemic. The evaluation included the achievement of the objectives together with its relevance, flow of the activity, accessibility of the online platform used including its audio and visuals, speakers, impact of the activities and the overall assessment of the activities.

A comparison of the evaluation of the speaker/s, impact of the activities and the overall assessment of the activities when the participants were grouped according to their councils and organizations was conducted, the relationship of the assessment of the speaker/s and the impact of the activity with its overall assessment was determined.

Frequency and percentage distribution, mean, standard deviation, Analysis of Variance, and correlation were used to answer the objectives. Results showed that at least 95% of the participants across all the activities agreed that objectives were achieved, relevant and realistic, activities were structured and well-organized, online platforms used were accessible and easy to navigate and that audio and visuals were good. Comparison of the evaluation of the participants from the different councils and organizations regarding the speakers, impact of the activities and overall evaluation showed that there was no significant difference except for the Job Hunting and the Dialogue with the Vice President and Makati Coordinating Council. A substantial to very high correlation was found between the evaluation of the speakers and the impact of the activity with the overall assessment of the activity.

Effects of Exercise on Student-athletes’ Fitness and Wellbeing: An Evaluation of the Home Training Program of the Sports Development Office Jemima Katrina Fajardo University of Asia and the Pacific ABSTRACT Student-athletes regularly train because they need to be physically ready for competitions. However, the Covid-19 pandemic, together with the cancellation of sports events and the uncertainty of collegiate leagues, has brought additional undue stresses to the student-athletes, which had led them to become unmotivated to train. To encourage the athletes to still be mindful of their wellness, projects containing exercise programs, called home workout program, as well as fitness-related online sessions were implemented. After 6 months, fitness tests were done to measure the effectiveness of the program. Testimonials from athletes (N = 22) were also recorded to find out other impacts of the program. Fitness test results showed maintenance or improvements in some components of fitness. Testimonials also reflected how exercise programs helped the students in coping with the current situation. Implications for effective training program include designing and modifying an exercise regimen that is doable with limited access to equipment and resources. Student-athletes must still be encouraged to regularly exercise not only for the physical benefits, but also for its mental and emotional effects on wellness.

The COVID-19 pandemic compels the educational institutions to online modalities, in order to deliver essential student services and programs. With the development and rise of various digital tools and platforms for student engagement, the transition to online learning seemed to be auspicious. However, the migration was not without its challenges given that the students also have their different individual needs. This paper highlights the different programs and initiatives catered to specific student demographics, with the goal of building confidence in facing the new normal and promoting holistic student development. Then, analyzed their impact through the evaluation surveys and feedback mechanism employed. Student responses indicated that the programs contributed positively to their physical, emotional-social, financial well-being and career development needs. Overall, findings suggest that with the unified services scheme organized by the UA&P Center for Student Affairs, the delivery of student services and programs became more attainable while addressing new challenges posed by the pandemic.

Student Discipline Representatives Development: Experiences and Training Needs 1De

ABSTRACT The Student Representatives Pool (SRP), a group of trained and appointed students who decide with the university discipline board on major discipline infractions of students against the university policies, don’t immediately sit as members of the adjudicating body. The floundering engagement of many of these trained students have set the course to develop a retention strategy and aims to improve student engagement as they continue in their maturing roles as members of the discipline deciding body. Qualitative comments were pooled and analyzed from open-ended entries of surveys given on three consecutive academic years to members (n=49) during their recruitment training in the program. Further, experiences of senior SRP members have been documented through a focus group interview in order to gain qualitative information on the felt training needs during the course of the program. Vital to its implementation is the performance of the student representatives in the boardroom, where they listen to the student-offender, ask questions and eventually make decisions that will impact another student’s life. This paper incorporates concepts on student involvement in the student disciplinary processes and proposes a student discipline representatives development program that develops cognitive, emotional and psychosocial skills needed in the boardroom.

BAMAGASA: An Extension Program for the Development of Pupils, Teachers, and Parents Dr. Eimee Potato and Emmanuel Dalayo Capiz State University ABSTRACT The study was conducted in Don Francisco Dinglasan Memorial School (DFDMS) of Punta Tabuc, Roxas City as a beneficiary of the Adopt-a-school program of Capiz State University-Roxas City Main campus during the academic year 2017-2018 to assess the development of the beneficiaries of the program BAMAGASA. Beneficiaries of the extension program were the fulltime faculty, selected grades 1 to 6 pupils and parents of DFDMS. Bata aton Sakdagon (BaSa) program enhanced the reading performance of the beneficiaries especially in Filipino subject. There was a positive result in all dimensions of Programang Teatro. Teachers rated the computer fluency training conducted in Manunudlo aton Sakdagon (Masa) activity.The team building was excellent also as perceived by teachers. In Ginikanan aton Sakdagon (GaSa) program, parents perceived the skills training on “cooking” as excellent while handicraft was perceived as “very good.”

Problem Experiences and Perspectives in Senior High School: Implications for Student Support Services Janne Ly C. Gilpo, Milagros H. Lagman. Liberty L. Ochavo, Jose Jeffrey S. Puentespina University of St. La Salle, urc@usls.edu.ph ABSTRACT The increasing number of psychosocial problems observed among Senior High School students highlighted the need to provide empirical evidence on how the school’s student services should appropriately respond. This study aimed to determine the problems of the students in senior high school and the perspectives of three sectors: students, faculty, administrators and officers regarding their experiences in a private high school in the Philippines. Using convergent parallel research design, the researchers did a survey among 455 students through a standardized checklist to identify their problems. Focus group discussion and interviews were conducted to identify the senior high school experiences from 24 participants representing these 3 sectors. The quantitative data was analyzed through frequency, percentages, Fisher’s exact test and chi-square, while the qualitative data was analyzed using Creswell’s data analysis method. Results showed that the students’ topmost problem areas are in personal psychological relations, social psychological relations and adjustment to school work while their specific problems include wondering if they will be successful in life, not having enough sleep and being lazy. There are significant differences among the topmost problems expressed by students across the following: grade level, strand, gender and socio-economic status, while no significant difference exists between the topmost problems and type of junior high school. Furthermore, six themes emerged from each group of participants.

Implications for student services, specifically in guidance and counseling and discipline and formation are discussed. Recommendations are proposed to address the problems and experiences expressed by the participants.

“Pag-ulikid”: Embracing the Challenges of Scholarship Grant Distribution in the Time of the Pandemic Nancy S. Surmieda, PhD West VIsayas State University, nsurmieda@yahoo.com

ABSTRACT This study is a narrative inquiry utilizing the reflexive process of documenting the experiences and stories of scholarship staff of the university, through individual interview, journal/notes and personal observations in the distribution of TES grants ,during the period of the pandemic, from May 2020 to January 2021. Findings showed the challenges in distributing the cheques. University staff were assigned to travel in other provinces encountered challenges such as : being stopped along the border of the provinces, being questioned and required health and travel passes, at times not being allowed to cross the border , being made to wait for the scholars in the sheds, public plaza, open gym, and barangay halls. Major themes that came out are: limitations of communication, anxiety of the staff over their safety, stress of travel , and commitment to service. To ensure the safety of the staff and assigned to go to the field, health and safety protocols were strictly followed. A university vehicle was provided and a security personnel accompanied the staff . Close coordination between the university and the LGU contact persons were made to facilitate speedy distribution of grants. The study showed that no barriers can hinder the task for as long as the commitment to deliver student services is in the hearts of the OSA. The distribution was successful, with no untoward incidents reported despite the “rough roads” encountered in the process.

Student Organizations: Institutions of Justice for Student Development and Wellness Ralph Reindle Jariño University of Santo Tomas ABSTRACT Student organizations are essential parts of a school. Each of them with diverse interests and mission-vision plays a crucial role in the dynamic, social and critical development of its members. Since schools are student-centered, student organizations strike the balance between the academic and non-academic realities of every student. However, they require a constant sense of vigilance because of the fragility and decay not only of its leaders and members but most importantly the very core and structure of such where the ethical perspective seems to be neglected, if not lost. If student organizations lose the essence of their existence, student development and wellness will be much more difficult to achieve leading to division and indifference among students. This paper aims to provide a general exposition and critical analysis of student organizations as institutions of justice using the philosophy of Paul Ricoeur and its relevance towards student development and wellness. Moreover, some personal observations and experiences will be examined in order to provide relevant data and concretize the ideas that Ricoeur espouses. In turn, there will be a determination of the achievement of a good life among all the stakeholders of a school. The good life refers to man’s ethical aim where there is a reign of institutions of service and not of power. It is expressed through administrators, faculty members, students and parents collaborating and co-existing harmoniously towards a genuine student development and wellness.

Determinants of Student Satisfaction in the Tertiary Education Rodrigo A. Salimaco, Jr. Davao Oriental State College of Science and Technology, rodrigosalimacojr@gmail.com ABSTRACT Higher education sector has become an increasingly competitive market and the university student satisfaction has become an important component of quality assurance. It is then very imperative to always keep abreast with the aspects that can boost the satisfaction of the students considering that they are the main clienteles of any tertiary institution. This study is a causal-correlational wherein it primordially sought to establish a mathematical model for the student satisfaction in the services offered in the tertiary institution using logistic regression analysis. With the use of finite population correction for proportion of the Cochran’s sampling formula, 367 students were randomly surveyed using the student satisfaction index (SSI). The result of the study revealed that there are four factors that significantly predict the satisfaction of the students in the tertiary education. These are the information, admission and registration, the resource center, the college environment, and the general services of the college. The main point of the strategy would be to encourage and increase the systems in manifold aspects through the services and for teaching and learning practices of the institution. Thus, the result suggests that tertiary institutions have to intensify their actions and planning towards the impact of the enrollment and infrastructures as these aspects provide substantial implications to the student satisfaction.
