Es ist eine Begegnung, eine Herausforderung, eine Einladung, ein Dialog, ein Abbild einer Gesellschaft, eine Vermessung des Körpers, ein Spiel mit der Persönlichkeit, ein Rätsel, ein Blick in die Seele oder ein Kontakt mit den Augen. Überzeuge die Jury mit deinem Bild eines Menschen, das den Augenblick überdauert.

Die besten Künstler aus 4 Kategorien werden von einer hochkarätigen Jury ausgezeichnet, die Werke werden von recom-art produziert und in einer thematischen kuratierten Gruppenausstellung im Projektraum PhotoWerkBerlin im November 2015 präsentiert.

A portrait is more than a copy of face. It‘s an encounter, a challenge, an invitation, a mirrow of the society, a survey of the body, a game with the personality, a dialog, a riddle, a look into the soul or contact through the eyes.

Submit a photograph that best realizes the challenge of portraiture.

Artists will be selected from 4 categories by a qualified jury to be produced by recom-art and presented in a curated group exhibition in Project Space PhotoWerkBerlin that will open in November 2015.

Despite the dire predictions of the death of analogue photography, there has been a noticeable resurgence of interest in non-digital, silver-based photography. With every “advance” in photography, while speed and ease has been gained, a describable and indescribable quality has been lost.

The Daguerreotype was replaced with the faster Wet­Plate Collodion Ambrotype which was subsequently replaced by the cheaper Tintype. With each step, image detail and tonality declined. Salted Paper printing was eclipsed by the Albumen Print, which was in turn abandoned for gelatin­silver paper. Today ink (digital prints) has replaced photography‘s use of noble metals, most commonly silver, gold, or platinum/palladium.Again, “ease of use” outweighed image quality and, arguably, stability (archivalness).

In this weekend Discussion & Workshop, participants will experience the evolution of photography through numerous historical processes. Saturday will include a discussion of various “antiquated” processes as well as demonstrations in Cyanotype, Salted Paper Printing, Silver-Gelatine Printing, Albumen Printing and Wet­Plate Collodion (Ambrotypes). At the end of the day participants will collectively decide which printing process (Cyanotype, Salted Paper, or Albumen) they would like to personally practice on Sunday. DER NATÜRLICHE BLICK

Photographie ist eine psychologische Herausforderung für Photograph und Model. Für ein stimmiges Porträt muss sich der Photograph über die eigenen Erwartungen an die Bilder, die entstehen sollen, im Klaren sein. Voraussetzung für eine individuelle photographische Arbeit ist die persönliche Herangehensweise.

Der Workshop findet im Kunsthaus Bethanien statt. Dieses ehemalige Krankenhaus aus der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts, bietet mit seinen Künstler-Ateliers, nicht nur einen inspirierenden Ort für Gespräche, sondern auch einen atmosphärischen Hintergrund für die Portraits.

A photo reveals every bit as much about the person behind the camera and it does about the person in front of the lens.

Photography is a psychological challenge for the Photographer and model. For a harmonious portrait you should have a clear concept of your expectations. To create a work that reflects an individual artistic language you have to find your own unique approach.

The workshop will be held in the Künstraum Bethanien. This former hospital dating back to the middle of the 19th century is now filled with artists studios which creates not only a inspirational place for discussions, but also offers an unique atmosphere for portraits.

BILDANALYSE

Was macht ein gutes Bild aus? Welche sind wichtige formale und inhaltliche Elemente und in welcher Beziehung stehen sie zueinander?

Bernd Rodrian ist Photograph, Leiter des Institut Heidersberger und Vorsitzender der Sektion Bild der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Photographie.

Anhand verschiedener Werke zeitgenössische Photographen wie Peter Piller und Steven Shore, aber auch Klassiker wie Heinrich Heidersberger, wird er im Workshop Bilder untersuchen. Dabei wird Bernd Rodrian der Frage nachgehen, welche Rolle formale und inhaltliche Aspekte für die Aussage eines Photos spielen. Zusätzlich wird er die Bilder der Teilnehmer anhand dieser Kriterien analysieren und mit ihnen Verbesserungsvorschläge erarbeiten What defines a good image? What are the important forms and elements and in what relationship do they connect?

Bernd Rodrian is a photographer, director of the Institute Heidersburger and chairman of the German Society for Photography (DGPh). With the help of varies artistic positions from modern photographers he‘ll address the questions of what roll formal rules of content and aesthetic play with in relation to what the image expresses. Additionally he will analyze the photos of the participants and discuss possibilities for refinements.

Das Wetplate Weekend führt ein in die wundervolle Welt der Glasplattenphotographie, die auch als Ambrotypie bekannt ist. David Puntel zeigt die Technik in Berlins einzigem Skylight Studio, umgeben von einem Garten. Die Arbeit mit natürlichem Licht erzeugt nicht nur angenehmere Bildtöne, sondern wir meistern auch konkret die Herausforderungen der Belichtungskontrolle. Es werden alle Schritte der Nassplatten-Technik behandelt. Durch die Arbeit mit verschiedenen Kameras und historischen Objektiven werden die Impressionen auf den einzigartigen Ambrotypien verewigt.

The Wetplate Weekend is a journey into the amazing world of creating photographic images on glass, historically known as ambrotypes. This Collodion Workshop is held in Berlin‘s only skylight studio surrounded by a lovely garden. Shooting with natural daylight creates a more pleasing image (in contrast to harsh artificial light), but also under such lighting, we will learn the challenging issue of exposure control.

The workshop includes instruction in all steps of the process, from the chemistry involved and glass preparation to troubleshooting and elaborating your own unique images. We will work with different cameras and antique brass lenses creating our own ambrotypes that preserve this wonderful weekend out of place and time.
