mentoring program, progress and lessons from 2014-15

Catalytic Grants and Mentoring Cohort As of last year the NASSCOM Social Innovation Forum platform has introduced a few new aspects to its engagement with the Innovation and enterprises community within the context of Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D). In particular, NSIF has introduced a Grant program and a capacity building initiative. As an evolving process, a systematic methodology was developed and adopted for the mentoring so as to ensure that the projects could be put on a pathway to scale and replication in the future – thus enabling NSIF to predict some of the impact potential and begin to measure and demonstrate a clear value proposition of the entire NSIF platform in the context of ICT4D Innovations & enterprises.

Catalytic Grant For the first of it’s kind cohort, the NSIF 2015 Grant cycle chose 3 social organisations, a mixture of For Profits and Not for Profits that were in their early- growth stage and in the process of validating their model in the real market and preparing to scale, engaging with them over a 9 month period. These organisations received a fund of Rs. 10 Lakhs as working capital which could be used by them to make strategic leaps for their organisation or business model. More details of the organisations, their activities and impact can be found in the following section.

Mentoring Journey so Far Background: 6 organisations For Profit and Not for Profit for 201415 winners, selected for 9 month capacity building and mentoring process – mentoring Partners Innovation Alchemy.

Of the 6 organisations: The 3 Catalytic Grant Winners- Received Rs. 10 Lakhs each along with mentoring guidance on how best to utilize this fund. The 3 receiving capacity building support- 2 organisations received light touch support while 1 organisation received in depth mentoring to refine and grow their innovations and organisations. NOTE: All of these organisations are not necessarily NSIF awardees, however they have been selected for the cohort because they have shown a potential to scale their innovation and demonstrate impact.

Objective of Mentoring The primary goals were to help the teams or innovators to streamline their models, streamline their operations and gain some skills, contacts and capacity that can help them scale up in a far more structured manner going forward. The outputs expected from mentoring include:

   

Increase reach to newer markets Increase capacity for efficient horizontal business processes Establish strong customer pipeline Have a holistic approach business development – technology and reach

Monitoring and Evaluation The progress of the cohort projects was tracked on a regular basis on an online platform, against set milestones to determine outcomes and impact and by extension, success. At the outset, milestones were established and scope of the project defined against which progress was tracked.

-Blessin, Research Consultant

As a part of NISF program, the brainstorming session guided us to revise our product ideation and design. We worked right from scratch after we received valuable product review from the technology mentors. The innovation and optimization in turn lead to promised orders from BOSCH research centre, for 1000 nos. even before the product is launched. We’ve scheduled the product launch on February 2016.

The team re-designed the device to resemble that of a fitness band- and have updated their algorithm which has resulted in a deployment of 100 pieces and a further promised order of 1,000 pieces from the German engineering giant Robert BOSCH The grant has enabled them to hire a highly skilled R&D team as well as discover and set up a sustainable supply chain for all the various hardware inputs. The product has finished it’s beta stage testing and is now ready to launch.

Interventions by NF •

Product Design and Development- Due to high hardware costs and a lack of skilled resources in the field of Kinect based application.

Need for Product Validation •

Connected and facilitated discussions between Tamana and technology mentors from the Microsoft Research Labs, who vetted the applications and advised the team on details such as user experience. Clear criterion for rigorous technology development , were set and monitored by the NASSCOM Foundation Team for the utilization of the Catalytic Grant. During all mentor interactions the NASSCOM Foundation team urged Tamana to conduct pilots in both Tamana’s special education schools and other special education organisations. Tamana was asked to review international standards set for special needs education and integrate this into their application, which would add to the legitimacy of the product.

Outcomes •

• The Tamana team has increased the size of it’s study group from 47 students to over 500 students who have tested the beta application. Tamana has also been testing the application at the events of other autistic organisations on willing beneficiaries. •

• Lack of a coherent Marketing strategy

The Mentoring Workshop hosted by NASSCOM Foundation helped the team think through concepts such as marketing, scaling and developing a business plan by showcasing existing best practice case studies. The team was urged at looking at the applicability of a Kinect based application to a larger market .

Tamana has now developed a beta version of the application with 5 distinct activites/games ready to launch in April 2016, aimed at improving coordination, joint control and communication of youth with autism. The team has also hired 2 technology developers and designers who have worked to build out the application.

Tamana has identified that devising a kinect based learning methodology that has the potential to benefit a greater number of children apart from those with special needs. The team has created marketing collaterals and is making a greater effort to expand their market by showcasing their application at the events of other special needs organisations.

LEARNINGS FROM THE FIRST MENTORING COHORT Due to many of the cohort teams being at various stages of maturity- the ability to tailor the mentoring programme to the needs of each individual organisation remained a pain point.

Non availability of stakeholders from teams led to irregular follow ups and lower touch points which made it harder to map the teams.

The lack of maturity and fruitation by some teams meant that new challenges and instability were commonNASSCOM Foundation was therefore not able to provide all the appropriate mentors necessary on a need basis.

A six to eight-month window of support is really short to see any real change or impact from the team’s work, hence an extension of support for the 2nd year would be looked into and a option would be provided to the cohort team members on a case by case basis.

A lot of learning happened in terms of feedback from possible funding partners for the platform. Specifically, NSIF team is now clear about the people who are present in the T4G space and who are ready to back them

The NSIF team has also gained a deeper understanding and therefore motivation of the need for mentoring support, capacity building assistance and help in setting up of processes for early stage startup organizations.
