Q A

The Road We Took We started this journey with the former P3: People, Planet and Possibilities program that has now transformed into the ‘Legacy of Good’ program. What was your vision when you initiated this program? We initiated the People Planet and Possibilities (P3) program with the objective of driving a positive change in our spheres of influence- our workplace, our community and planet. We believe that the unlimited ‘Possibilities’ which lie untapped in our world can be realized by working with and for ‘People’, to create a better ‘Planet’. Did you know that this framework compliments and aligns well with Dell Legacy of Good vision of putting technology and expertise to work where it can do the most good for people and the planet.

thousands of children who don’t have access to basic education and girls who are dropping out of school because of the lack of functional restrooms. We believe it’s the responsibility of each one of us to strive to ensure every child gets access to quality education, and thus the School Adoption Program was put in place. We started our journey with Garudacharpalya Government School in Bangalore and today we cover 33+ schools under this program. Talking about impact, for instance, after India COE’s involvement, Garudacharpalya Government School has seen a transformation in the outlook of not only the school but also the children: there has been a 67% increase in students

One cannot question the organization’s vision, leadership, focus and absolute backing in making deeply impactful CSR programs. In our case, we have another star - volunteering. Our team members, by both design and through their zeal, have always been at the core of all our CSR programs. The journey has been gratifying for them and us, at all levels. The numerous opportunities we offer our team members to volunteer their time and skill has always been met with befitting enthusiasm. One shining example is the way in which teams at India COE have adopted a school each under the School Adoption Program and taken complete ownership of the project from planning of activities to their execution to measuring/ reporting impact. It’s heartening to hear from them about how these programs enable them to give back to the society while also helping them develop important life skills and transform into responsible global citizens. Our Flagship Initiative School Adoption Program Our flagship initiative, the ‘School Adoption Program’ has grown over the years, both in reach and impact. The long-term vision of the program to provide quality education to children and its impact can be witnessed through the story of the Garudacharpalya school, a under resourced government school in Bangalore.

Legacy of Good

Case Study Gardudacharpalya Government School was one of the first schools adopted by India COE in 2011 as part of its school adoption program. At that time, the school lacked basic infrastructure, academic program and trained teachers leading to high drop-out rates. Through India COE’s need based interventions, restrooms and hygienic sanitation facilities were put in place; a structured curriculum was developed; and teacher training and computer classes started. Today the school stands proud with 67% increase in students clearing grades, 10% increase in girls’ admission and 20% students pursuing higher education. With the aim to replicate the success achieved in Garudacharpalya government school, the School Adoption Program now extends to 33 schools in Bangalore and Pune benefitting over 6000 children. With the objective of addressing the academic and infrastructure needs in the schools , India COE has supported these schools with numerous programs that include- ‘Digital Literacy ’, ‘Mobile Science Van ’, ‘Library In A Bag’, ‘Health Screening’ ‘Sanitation Awareness and Restroom Construction’

1,300 volunteers contributed over 6,500 hours

One of the key drivers for the success of the ‘School Adoption Program’ is the work done by our dedicated volunteers from each business unit at India COE who plan and execute all initiatives to facilitate the learning of the children. Each business unit adopts a school, taking full ownership for the assessment, execution and sustenance of all interventions, whether academic or infrastructure-related, with the goal to help underprivileged children realize their dream of a brighter future. This year alone, around 1,300 volunteers contributed over 6,500 hours to successfully deliver academic classes, mentoring, administration support and so much more.

School kits consisting of school bags, notebooks and basic stationery items

One of our landmark initiatives, the School Kit Donation Drive was again organized this year in collaboration with Youth For Seva, a non-profit partner. School kits consisting of school bags, notebooks and basic stationery items were sponsored by volunteers and donated to the less privileged children at the beginning of the school year. The purpose of the program was to motivate the students as they get ready to resume classes and facilitate lower dropout rates by helping the less fortunate students. The excitement of the students was reflected not only in their smiles but also in the enthusiasm of the volunteers.

Championing Equity In Education India COE has also launched programs to empower and educate children not part of the School Adoption program. In collaboration with APD, a non-profit partner, we launched a program to create an inclusive learning environment for disabled students by enabling them with individual education and rehabilitation plans. 115 students attending private or government schools are supported through this engagement that also involves capacity building sessions for parents, peers and teachers. The program also includes the setting up a community learning center for 30 children with severe disabilities, where they are trained to enhance their motor skills to perform day-to-day activities. Additionally, we also support the education of 60 orphan children studying in private schools (with SOS Children’s Villages of India and Reaching Hand) over 300 children in 10 learning centers (with Youth For Seva). These learning centers serve as after-school tuition centers with the objective to lower dropout rates and provide quality education such that the children are at par with their peers.

To honour and celebrate our superheroes’ spirit of ‘Giving Back’ , we organized the ‘The Return of Superheroes’ event. The event brought together volunteers, non-profit partners and the children, all of whom led to the success of our initiatives. BUs were felicitated with awards for their utmost dedication in the adopted schools throughout the year. These awards paid tribute to the Superhero spirit in the teams at India COE who have come forward and helped champion the cause of children and education and continue to do so. Students who had performed exceptionally well in the previous academic year were also felicitated. The event inspired the volunteers to continue doing good work and motivated the children to pave their way to a brighter future.

2016 Footprints India COE’s vision of Environmental Sustainability is rooted in a world where responsible individuals and organizations are empowered to make conscious choices that will positively affect the future. Last year, we decided to direct our efforts towards the three areas of the resource triangles that we consume - waste, water and community ecology. This year, we have undertaken some key projects under Environmental Sustainability. The issue of Bangalore city’s rapidly depleting lakes due to infrastructure development in the city is one that requires urgent action. Working in support and collaboration with NGOs- India COE has, for the first time, adopted three lakes in the city-Seegehalli lake, Mahadevpura lake and Kaikondrahalli lake

This project was inaugurated on 30th November 2016 and is our first step towards working in the area of ‘water’ under our environmental sustainability initiatives this year. In February, a ‘Cleanliness Drive’ was organized at Seegehalli lake with 50 enthusiastic volunteers from India COE. waste pickers to work. This center, located in Marapanpalaya, is now capable of managing 5 tonnes of waste as compared to 1.2 tonnes earlier. The upgraded DWCC is the second of its kind in India and is a model DWCC that can be replicated across the city.

Waste management is currently an area of environmental concern in the city. India COE has been passionately involved with waste management and the empowerment of waste pickers. In 2016, India COE partnered with the NGO Hasirudala, for a project on ‘waste management’. The project focuses on the empowerment of waste pickers by providing access to social security schemes and enhancing the nutrition levels of these waste pickers. The program also involves the setting up of a community library for the children of the waste pickers with the aim of inculcating a reading habit among these children. As of today, we have reached out to about 100 children. A key component of the project is the upgradation of a dry waste collection centre (DWCC) . Promoting STEM Education With The Scholar’s Program Meet

Launched in 2016, India COE continues to support its ‘Scholars Program’, which provides equal educational opportunities to youth from weaker socio-economic brackets. In its first year, the initiative worked in collaboration with Foundation for Excellence (FFE) to provide financial support and mentorship to 50 students from the STEM discipline. This year, the same support was extended to 50 additional students from JSS Polytechnic for the Differently Abled (Mysore) to pursue STEM. The initiative encourages students to become “job creators” rather than “job seekers”.

Pravin Singh 2016 was our 2nd innings in Bodhanahosahalli Government Primary School after completing a very successful year in 2015. We have seen these kids grown up from shy individuals to confident students excelling in studies and in extra circular activities as well. Once they had fewer questions, less interest, less motivation, less goals but now they have MORE of everything instead. We are focused to bring more and more with each passing year hoping they will have more to thrive for.”

Sudha Ashok “The School Adoption program was an amazing and humbling experience for our RSA volunteers. It provided a wonderful avenue and a great opportunity for our high-spirited volunteers to connect to the school children and guide them in many ways on their life journey. The volunteers felt blessed to teach English and other skills and expressed their willingness to contribute more. “

Sangeeta.P.Patil It was my pleasure to be a part of this noble cause where we had to share our knowledge with the rising buds. The students were enthusiastic and had the thirst to learn and co-operated as to what was taught to them. Their funny answers kept the class alive with complete participation. Re-lived my school memories, sitting on the desk and writing with Blackboard Chalk etc‌.!! It is said that a teacher never grows old because they are always young by their knowledge, so did we. There is in-depth happiness, confidence gained, positivity and indeed an encouragement for us to learn and then deliver to the best of our ability. Many thanks for this opportunity and I look forward to always be a part of it

Monika Singh It feels great and exciting to be part of the school adoption program. The only motivating factor is the students, we can see the excitement and eagerness in students to learn new things and if we can give a strong academic support to students, there is nothing better thing in life.

Harish Manoharan This is the ONLY activity all my team members participate; otherwise we all come to work which is routine – WE ENJOY WHAT WE DO NOW @ SCHOOL! All the volunteers enjoy visiting the school & Kids and sharing the knowledge we have to all. We have planned some more activities to interact with the school kids which will break the barrier/fear the kids have while talking.

Sowmya Pavan It was dream come true when I had been asked to run the CSR for CPSD/VCE team as it is very close to my heart. The excitement

of being associated with the school and kids gave me enough strength to go beyond my expectation to meet the Head Master and Kids in Muttsandra School and re-launch the CSR activities effectively. I have visited the school personally and did analysis of the need & the requirement to accomplish in the year 2016 and we have focused mainly on Spoken English, Computer Education & Cleanliness. We had few enthusiastic volunteers visiting the schools once a month. I have received great respect and co-operation from the school to run this program seamlessly. I fall in love with those kids every time I hear “Hi, Sowmya Mam” and “When are you coming next” it echoes. Looking forward to make bigger impact in the year 2017 and so on.
