WELCOME

Welcome Welcome to our fifth staff magazine and thank you for your continued feedback and contributions.

In this edition we catch up on progress on the cultural infrastructure programme, part of the £100million investment in Renfrewshire’s visitor and event venues to transform the area through our unique heritage and cultural story. With the museum now closed and the Town Hall set to begin refurbishment early next year, I’m excited to see progress on transforming our key venues, as part of our wider plans to increase visitors to Renfrewshire.

Our expanding events programme has already brought in £1.25 million to the local economy so far this year and with our winter programme kicking off this month, I would encourage everyone to see what’s on offer and take advantage of the many great events on our doorstep.

Creating a sustainable Renfrewshire for everyone to enjoy is one of our key priorities. We meet our new Director of Environment and Infrastructure Services, Gordon McNeil, who talks about his future plans and how staff engagement is top of his list as he embarks on his new role.

Over the summer, we welcomed the news that Renfrewshire has been confirmed as the location for a multi-million pound innovation district revolutionising research and advanced manufacturing. The Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland has fantastic potential to generate a huge amount of inward investment, new jobs and training opportunities, already attracting the £65million National Manufacturing Institute for Scotland (NMIS) and a Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre.

Based near the airport, the site will be supported by our Glasgow City Deal projects, developing a real centre of

excellence, not only for opportunities for communities and businesses across Renfrewshire, but across Scotland.

Much of the success of our work here at Renfrewshire Council depends on our close working relationships with our partners and this issue also includes the first in a series of partner profiles. I’m delighted to introduce Scottish Fire and Rescue’s Area Manager for Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire and Inverclyde, Graeme Binning, who works with us on a range of issues and is a key member of Renfrewshire’s Community Planning Partnership.

Transforming how we work and access information across the council has been a key driver of the new Business World system which launched its first phase in October. For all employees it will now be much easier for you to manage your personal details, expenses and overtime online. For managers, it'll transform how you plan and budget with real time information available at the touch of a button. It’s important that you understand what it can do and what it will mean for you.

Last, and by no means least, we celebrate this Year of Young people by asking some of our youngest employees about what it means to work for Renfrewshire Council.

“It was a great team-building exercise for everyone and it was brilliant to be able to raise so much for ACCORD at the same time.

Although I think for the next challenge we might try something not quite as tiring!”

10K’s too many!

Here in the Marketing, Communications and Events team, we’re not all words and pictures, we do get out into the real world every now and then!

As a team, we’ve decided to challenge ourselves to do our bit for various charities throughout the year, which can range from helping them with their social media, to taking part in fundraising.

Our first big event was to put on our running/jogging/ walking shoes and hit the start line of the Paisley 10K, along with 2121 others.

Across the team, 12 of us took part with everyone successfully making their way round the course in a variety of times—all of which are equally impressive!

The charity we chose to fundraise for, on this occasion, was ACCORD Hospice and we managed to raise more than £1800.

ACCORD carry out fantastic work within Renfrewshire providing palliative end of life care for those suffering through illness, as well as immeasurable support for their families.

Swinging in support of MND Scotland 20 Renfrewshire Council daredevils joined forces with Provost Cameron to raise money for her chosen charity for 2018— MND Scotland.

The group travelled to Killiecrankie in September to take part in the Highland Fling Swing—a 40 metre high swing attached to a bridge over the River Garry. Rigged in a full body harness, fundraisers were dropped a free fall of around 15 metres before swinging under the bridge, taking in the stunning views of the area.

MND Scotland strive to reduce the impact of Motor Neurone Disease on the lives of those affected by offering services such as benefits advice, equipment loans, counselling, advocacy and a grants programme.

There are currently 14 people living in Renfrewshire with MND—but when you consider the number of family, friends, and colleagues they have, the number of people affected by MND locally is much higher.

‘Walk this way’ with Customer and Business Services

Making a difference Clerical assistant Kevin Milliken has a positive ethos for change.

It’s 96 miles from Milngavie to Fort William, but that didn’t stop three colleagues walking the West Highland Way to raise money for a good cause.

Isaac Wilkie, Pat Boyle and John Campbell decided to take on the challenge of walking the West Highland Way, in just three days, to raise money for Isaac’s stepson to go to India as part of World Challenge with his school next year.

World Challenge provide expeditions for schools, aiming to develop young people’s sense of adventure, courage and kindness and adventure. Activities can involve trekking across the country, experiencing the local culture and helping with a community project such as building a school.

Isaac said “We put in a serious amount of training days, walking 25 to 30 miles each day carrying our tent and emergency food.

“We started the walk on Saturday 9 June with the aim of arriving in Fort William on the Monday evening. However, I had to retire midway through Sunday due to injury.

“Pat and John (pictured) continued on and finished the walk around midday on the Tuesday which was a phenomenal achievement, considering the walk usually takes around five to seven days to complete.”

The walk plus a dress down day in CBS raised £517.00, thanks to all who donated!

Following the launch of his ‘The One Initiative: Making Changes’ which is a partnership approach to confronting social and economic issues at a local level, Kevin has plans to create his own social enterprise.

His first project, in 2014, was ‘Food Bank Food Rush’ — linking with local schools and businesses to help tackle food poverty in Renfrewshire by gaining food donations for the local foodbank. As of July this year, over 85,000 items of food have been donated, with further secondary school collections planed this autumn.

Not one to rest on his laurels, a second project is set to begin shortly, this time aiming to encourage young people to make a difference themselves. His initiative will help pupils design, develop, implement and evaluate their own projects, and receive feedback on how they can improve.

Reflecting on the last four years, Kevin said, “I would say that, at first, I never really knew where this would go. I started it as a food fundraising initiative to help tackle food poverty in the area. From there, I found I had a passion for making change possible.

“I tried many things—some failed, others worked— but I’ve been inspired by the reaction of the people I’ve worked with and the changes we’ve made together. It’s all about finding a way.

With plans to register with Social Enterprise Scotland and begin the process of setting up his own, Kevin is excited about the future.

He added: “I have been saying for quite a while now that when you realise all the things you want to do to help, time is not your friend. I’m excited to see where this leads me!”

Before!

Two brave employees took the plunge and shaved off their locks for charity.

Youth officers Jeanette Love and Sharon Waterson decided to take part in Macmillan Cancer Care’s “Brave the Shave” fundraising activity after experiencing cancer in their own family and friends circle.

If you’ve not met them before, here’s what they looked like before the shave!

A huge crowd of colleagues gathered inside the Atrium at Renfrewshire House to cheer Sharon and Jeanette and boost the duo’s fundraising money.

It was even live-streamed on our Facebook page.

Speaking after the event, Sharon said: “I can’t believe what we’ve done but it was all well worth it”.

Jeanette, who recently lost her sister to cancer, was grateful for the crowd and the money raised so far.

She said: “It was an amazing turnout.

If only you could shave cancer away as well.

“I am glad that I can do something to help Macmillan Cancer Care for all the wonderful work they do to support families going through this horrible disease. At the end of the day it’s only hair, it will grow back, as long as I can do something to help.”

They were both joined by colleagues Eric Gilday and Danny Rossiter from the community safety hub.

Danny supported the fundraising efforts by having his moustache of around 30 years shaved off.

Probably the most painful experience was Eric, who opted to have his legs waxed. Ouch!

TOWN CENTRE REGENERATION

£100m investment in Renfrewshire’s venues is moving ahead…

The cultural infrastructure programme is central to the wider plan to transform Renfrewshire’s future by using Paisley’s unique heritage and cultural story to make it one of Scotland’s key destinations for visitors and events.

It will create venues capable of hosting the new events and cultural activity we and our partners will attract over the next few years, while bringing new life and footfall into Paisley High Street and town centre, boosting local traders.

At the same time, it will preserve the future of some of our precious architectural icons by turning some of our bestloved 19th-century buildings into 21st-century facilities.

The programme is being led by a cultural infrastructure project team based within the Chief Executive’s service at council HQ, and working in partnership with Renfrewshire Leisure, who operate our local cultural venues. Heading up this team is Cultural Infrastructure Projects Director Neil Watson.

TOWN CENTRE REGENERATION

Here’s the lowdown on the projects…

The flagship project is the £42 million work to transform the museum into a world-class destination telling the inspirational stories of Paisley’s people and pattern and showcasing its internationally-significant collections.

The project will see major improvements to all the museum buildings and will reimagine how the collections are displayed. The revamped museum is predicted to attract 125,000 visitors a year when it reopens in 2022. Our design team is led by internationally-renowned architects AL_A, who have worked on landmark buildings around the globe.

The museum complex (including the Coats Observatory) closed in September but the collections can still be seen in the Paisley: The Secret Collection museum store at 9 High Street.

A £22 million internal refurbishment to preserve the town hall’s place at the heart of life in the town and make it one of the West of Scotland’s landmark entertainment venues.

The redesign will broaden the range of events it can host transforming the performance facilities and visitor experience. The town hall will close at the end of this year and reopen in 2021.

A £7.7 million project to create new outdoor spaces capable of hosting major events while improving the sporting facilities. This includes an upgrade of existing grass pitches, a synthetic hockey pitch, a new pavilion and changing facilities, plus a new access road and car parking.

£10 million has been set aside to change the look and feel of the town centre, including the transformation of key outdoor spaces at County Square and Abbey Close. This will expand the capacity for major events, create residential and visitor accommodation and boost trade.

The project will also see upgrades to key road junctions around the town centre to help traffic flow, improve road safety, and provide a sense of ‘arrival’ to the town.

A £2.5 million upgrade of the existing building to improve the performance facilities. The Arts Centre will close in spring 2019 and reopen in 2020.

A new learning and cultural hub housing the town’s library collections and offering a modern educational resource for our pupils, students and adults.

The facility—in a previously-vacant unit at 22 High St— will open in 2021.

The old Paisley Central Library building is now closed along with the museum and a temporary library will be open from January in a modular building next to the Lagoon Leisure Centre until its permanent home is finished.

Temporary access to public access PCs will be available in the Paisley.is office at 5a High Street until January. The heritage centre will reopen in November in a new temporary home at Mile End Mill.

THE LENS

The Lens: A snapshot of success The recent Lens final demonstrated the breadth of talent and innovation across the Council with finalists pitching for funding on a diverse range of projects.

Here’s how two of our current intrapreneurs are turning their ideas into action:

Gail Scoular ‘Team Up to Clean Up Caddies’ Senior Community Warden Gail Scoular has been cleaning up her community as a volunteer for years. She decided to pitch her idea for the creation of community caddies, providing residents with the tools to carry out clean ups across Renfrewshire, supporting the Team Up to Clean Up campaign—be it a litter pick, hedge cutting or trimming trees. At this year’s Lens final, she won £12,000 in funding to create 25 of the caddies which will be stocked with litter pickers, shears, rakes and other tools, and given to community groups across the area to carry out activities such as litter picks, hedge cutting or trimming trees.

Caddies are now available and were showcased at the recent Team Up to Clean Up ‘Thank You’ event. Community groups can now apply to use them.

Gail said, "I'm proud of where I live and I noticed areas were overgrown where council machines couldn't always fit in the nooks and crannies. So I thought, if I could do some basic maintenance to make the place a little nicer, people would respect the area a bit more."

Joan Ferguson ‘Discover the Braes’ Joan Ferguson, Economic Development Assistant for Invest in Renfrewshire, has always loved the Gleniffer Braes. Her ‘Discover the Braes’ project was awarded £3000 in our first Lens final back in 2017 and aimed to create awareness of the area, attract footfall and put Gleniffer Braes firmly on the visitor map.

Joan reached out to community groups and our marketing and events team with a view to creating a visitor event at the Braes. She struck up a partnership with Bricklane Production Studios, developed a marketing campaign and delivered a one-off (for now) ‘Discover the Braes’ event during September’s Doors Open weekend.

Hosted by Tom Urie of BBC’s River City, the event included guided tours, face painting, live entertainment, charity and craft staffs. Over 2000 visitors took part with a social media campaign reaching around 8000 more.

Joan said, “Gleniffer Braes is a gem within Renfrewhire.

People really enjoyed being part of the event and told me they’d love to see it as an annual event on the calendar! #Glenfest! I’m now looking for support from local groups to apply for futher feasibility study funding. Fingers crossed!”

GORDON MCNEIL What attracted you to work at Renfrewshire Council?

I’ve worked in local government over the last 20 years, starting off as a student environmental health officer and then working in a number of different roles, all of which have given me a real appreciation for the services we deliver, how essential they are to people and the positive impact they can have.

One of the main reasons I was attracted to Renfrewshire was the ambition the council has for local communities and its economy. I’ve worked in other local authorities and the drive and enthusiasm here was a key reason I was keen to take up this role.

I’d also worked for the council before and I really enjoyed my time here - so the opportunity to take up the post of Director was one I was very excited about. Continuing to develop our services will be an exciting part of my role.

Can you give us a brief overview of your role?

As Director, I’m responsible for the teams working round the clock to deliver many of the frontline services our communities rely on. Whether that’s looking after our roads, keeping our neighbourhoods and parks clean and safe, making sure our council-run buildings and schools are well maintained and looked after, or making sure our children and young people are well-fed and ready to learn.

Like everyone in the public sector, we need to be able to manage the increasing and changing customer demand but the council has demonstrated its ability to adapt and we’ll need to continue to do this in the coming years.

What will your priorities be in the new service?

I learned a lot from my predecessor Shona MacDougall, who oversaw massive change during her time here. That change will undoubtedly continue and I’d like to make sure all of our teams feel part of that process. One of the things I’m looking forward to is getting out and about, meeting all of the teams and seeing first hand the challenges and opportunities in their roles. I’m keen to spend more time listening to their views on our strengths and weaknesses as a service and on how we can continue to improve.

Our teams work really hard throughout the year and I want to make sure they get the recognition for that and feel a valuable part of what we, as a council, are aiming to achieve.

How does the work of your service benefit the local community?

Many of our residents associate the services we deliver as the very heart of what the council is here to provide collecting their bins, sweeping the streets or cutting the grass, maintaining roads and repairing our housing stock.

We maintain and develop the infrastructure which everyone uses on a daily basis. This could be the roads you use to get work, the park you walk your dog in, or the school you send your children to.

Teams work 24/7, 365 days of the year, to deliver high quality services to all our residents, businesses and visitors.

How do you see the council progressing in the upcoming years?

We recognise there are financial pressures, as there will be with all councils, but I’m confident in our ability to make sure we’re fit for the future, that we can respond to the

What do you like to do in your spare time?

My kids are in their early years at primary school so I enjoy spending my time with them, although as every week passes I realise I am becoming ‘Dad’s taxi’! I like playing sport and try my best to keep fit. I’ve played a lot of football, however injuries have caught up with me and I’m a long time retired now unfortunately.

Tell us something we wouldn’t know about you

I suppose not many people would know that, pre-children, I was a keen piper and played competitively. I was lucky enough to win a number of major competitions and just missed out on the World Championship—2nd being my best finish.

It’s something I loved doing and I was lucky enough to have travelled across three continents, America, Africa and Europe, playing and competing. Before you ask, I am not available to play at weddings!!

Childcare Voucher scheme ‘Edenred’ closed to new entrants.

Our partnership with Edenred, who provided a Childcare Voucher Scheme to employees, is now closed to new entrants.

The Childcare Voucher scheme has been replaced by a new system of tax-free childcare provided by the government.

Now working parents can receive financial support of up to £2,000 a year per child, as long as both parents earn more than £120 per week.

If you are currently enrolled on the Edenred scehme then nothing will change. Existing members can continue to claim childcare vouchers. If you decide to leave the Childcare Voucher scheme now you will not be able to re-join at a later date.

Are you prepared for the new bin collection service?

Last year, it cost us £4.1 million to send household waste to landfill—approximately £11,233 per day.

This money could be better spent in our key public services and is one of several ongoing challenges which mean we need to increase and improve our recycling.

From 12 November, the new green bin for plastic, cans and glass will start to be delivered to households across Renfrewshire and you should start using this immediately.

Once you have your green bin, this means you should only use your blue recycling bin for paper, card and cardboard.

There will also be a change to the frequency of collections, with the

majority of households moving to a three-weekly collection for their grey general waste bin.

The new service will be slightly different though for those living in flats, those who have a sack collection or those who use bulk bins.

Don’t worry, all information specific to your home will be delivered to you in advance to ensure you are fully prepared for the new service starting.

These programmes support the achievement of a key priority in our Workforce Plan, to create and improve career pathways for staff, support succession planning and build a sustainable workforce.

Permit scheme introduced at HWRCs In a move to stop businesses illegally using our Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC) to dump their trade waste, a permit scheme has been introduced.

Anyone driving a van, pick-up, minibus or similar commercial type vehicle, must register online for a free permit by 4:30pm the day before they plan to visit.

This doesn't apply to residents driving cars—unless they are towing a trailer.

Don't forget that photo id and proof of residency should always be brought to the centres, as has always been the case.

New parenting leave and pay policy Almost three-quarters of our staff are women, and many are working parents, so we want to help them to get the balance right by facilitating the sharing of parenting responsibilities.

What are the key policy changes?

• Paid time off for partners to attend ante-natal appointments.

• Paternity leave extended to four weeks (for staff with 26 weeks continuous service with the first week paid at 100% and three weeks paid at 90%).

• Shared Parental Pay now based on Maternity Pay provisions.

Who does the policy apply to?

All Council staff except for teachers—who have their own arrangements in place.

When does it apply from?

Now. It was one of three policies approved by councillors in September alongside a new Flexible Working Policy and the Trade Union Facility Time Policy.

It’s all part of our objective to create a healthy and inclusive working environment supporting staff to better balance work and life commitments.

If you intend to come into Renfrewshire House on a Saturday or Sunday, we need to know in advance.

You should fill out a Renfrewshire House Access Request form a minimum of two weeks before to allow the appropriate arrangements to be made.

There is a cost attached so please ensure you discuss this with your line manager first.

Still here late on a weekday?

If you’re working past 6pm on a weekday in Renfrewshire House, you need to complete a ‘Late Working Schedule’ which is available on the intranet.

These forms should be with the security office by 3:30pm and you can find them on the ‘Useful forms’ page.

Changes to Housing Benefit

Universal Credit On Wednesday 19 September, Universal Credit came into effect in Renfrewshire. Here’s what that means.

Universal Credit is a single monthly payment for people in or out of work and replaces the following benefits and tax credits: • • • • • •

Housing Benefit Income Support Jobseekers Allowance Employment and Support Allowance Child Tax Credits Working Tax Credits.

If you currently claim any of the above, you won’t need to do anything until the Department for Works and Pensions (DWP) contact you, unless: • you make a new claim for any of the above benefits or tax credits, or • your circumstances change and your benefits need to be reassessed.

All claims for Universal Credit are made online and it’s important you make your claim as soon as you can. To find out if you’re eligible, or to make a claim, visit www.gov.uk/universal-credit.

If you don’t have access to a computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone, you can book a computer at Renfrewshire Libraries or drop-in and use the computers at the Customer Service Centre at HQ. You can also book an appointment with a Digiteer if you aren’t confident about using a computer or getting online.

If you don’t have wifi or data, you can access free public wifi at Johnstone, Renfrew and Paisley town centres as well as within Renfrewshire House.

Schools see improvements two years after Renfrewshire becomes an Attainment Challenge authority

Our schools are recording improvements in pupil’s reading, writing and numeracy skills thanks to the innovative projects introduced as part of the Scottish Government’s Attainment Challenge.

We became an Attainment Challenge authority in 2016 and are one of nine areas chosen to receive a share of a £750 million pot to help close the gap in results between the most and least affluent pupils.

Since then, there have been improvements in pupils’ reading age scores across primary three to seven, and indicators suggest the attainment gap has been reducing in listening, talking, reading, writing and numeracy measurements.

Overtime & Expenses

Cost Codes

Payment for overtime and expenses claims are now requested through Business World. For travel and subsistence expenses claims simply upload copies of your receipts and your request will automatically route to your line manager for approval.

There are now three separate pieces of information for financial approvals and reporting: a cost centre, an account code and an analysis code. To make sure your request for payment is costed to the right place, you’ll need the new Business World codes. Full details, and a mapping document to link the old codes to the new codes, are available on the Business World section of Renfo.

Viewing Payslips You will be able to view your payslip from the first paydate after 18 October. MyView will continue to be available for viewing historic payslips but this will be phased out.

Ordering goods and paying suppliers We’re still using PECOS for all our requisition orders – this won’t change until April 2019. However, if you need to add a new supplier you will make this request through Business World.

The manual payments and batch header process has now stopped and can only be arranged by exception. The Procure to Pay team can help guide you through this.

Business World will also be used by Renfrewshire Leisure, Renfrewshire Health & Social Care Partnership, Clyde Muirshiel, Clyde Plan, Glasgow Clyde Valley Green Network, Scotland Excel and Renfrewshire Valuation Joint Board.

CITY EAL: AMIDS

The beating heart of Scottish manufacturing The Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland (AMIDS) is coming to Renfrewshire as part of the City Deal project, find out more below.

What is it?

The Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland (AMIDS) is the name of a new internationallyrecognised district for innovation, research and advanced manufacturing which is being developed in Renfrewshire.

The only one of its kind in Scotland, we are developing it in partnership with Scottish Enterprise, supported by the Scottish Government to attract national and international manufacturing investment.

Who will be based there?

Based in Inchinnan, at the heart of the district is a 150-acre development site next to Glasgow Airport which will include: • the National Manufacturing Institute for Scotland (NMIS), a collaborative project funded by the Scottish Government and University of Strathclyde.

It aims to attract manufacturing investment and support Scottish manufacturers to grow and compete by developing new advanced technologies.

It also includes a skills academy, upskilling current manufacturers and inspiring future generations.

• the Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre (MMIC), providing pharmaceutical companies with a unique service to develop manufacturing techniques which speed up bringing new drugs to market.

• next to the main site, at nearby Westway will be the new Lightweight Manufacturing Centre, Scotland’s only facility for research and development of lightweight components.

Our City Deal team is currently working on delivering the underpinning infrastructure through the £39.1million Glasgow Airport Investment Area project, which is funded from the Glasgow City Region City Deal.

This includes the realignment of Abbotsinch Road and new bridges across the Black and White Carts.

Construction is expected to start later this year for completion in 2020, improving connections with Westway, Inchinnan and Glasgow Airport business parks.

What benefits will it bring?

The benefits will be felt at local, regional and national level and embed advanced manufacturing across Scotland. Manufacturing businesses across a variety of sectors are expected to be attracted to the two national innovation centres.

This, in turn, will grow the economy by creating thousands of new highly skilled jobs and encouraging companies of all shapes and sizes to locate here and grow.

PROBATIONARY TEACHERS

Top of the class!

As almost 100 new probationary primary and secondary teachers gathered in Johnstone Town Hall for their induction, just days before the new school year, we spoke with some about their route into the profession, and their hopes for the year ahead.

Former musical actress, 25-year-old Gemma McLennan, who swapped the stage for the classroom, said: “I’m excited to be going into my probationary year at Langcraigs Primary in Paisley. I have come into Renfrewshire Council this year not knowing a huge amount about the Council, but from what I’ve seen so far everybody is very keen to help and just very generous with their time and answering any questions.

“I have always liked anything to do with children and even when I was working as an actor I was also working as a nanny on the side.

“I’ve met the head teacher and children at my school, which was really nice and I can’t wait to start.

“I’ll be teaching primary two which I’m delighted about.”

Fraser McKechnie, 22, from Erskine is teaching at St Peter’s Primary in Paisley. He said, “I’m from this area so it’s excellent to be able to stay here and work, there’s lots of opportunities in Renfrewshire. I would recommend teaching to anyone if you

PARTNER PROFILE—GRAEME BINNING

As a professional classical violinist he played some of the world’s most prestigious venues but Graeme Binning’s true passion lay elsewhere. At the age of 27 and on the cusp of taking on a permanent orchestra role, he quit music in favour of the fire service. The dadof-one is now the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s new Local Senior Officer for the Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire and Inverclyde local authority areas.

The 45-year-old, who started playing the violin at the age of just eight, says that he relishes his new role. He insists he has no regrets, despite playing the celebrated Proms at the Albert Hall, as well as stints with a string of Britain's most celebrated orchestras, including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Glasgow.

He said: “I have friends still in the music industry and I watch them on YouTube but I don’t miss it or envy where they are. I joined the fire service in England and I have no regrets whatsoever. I count myself really lucky to have had two professions and I still play music for pleasure – my only rule is I don’t play for money.

“Nobody in the fire service even knew until a few years ago and now I get rolled out to play at our annual SFRS Burns Supper. It defines me a wee bit but not as much as family and losing my pals.”

The fire boss tragically lost two close friends and colleagues in the line of duty in 2010 and says the loss shaped the man and professional he is today.

Graeme, who started his fire service career as a probationer on the frontline in Southampton, said: “I had moved back to Scotland and the news was on one day and my wife called me into the room. There was a fire in a high rise block I knew well but I didn’t know which Watch was on duty.

I started phoning round the boys but nobody was answering their phone and I had that feeling in the pit of my stomach.”

After an agonising wait, he was finally given the tragic news that two friends, Alan Bannon and Jim Shears had perished in the blaze.

He said: “We see a lot in our job and the more you see the less you want to see it again. Safety is at the heart of everything we do. When the bells go down and the fire engine rolls out the station I am confident in this area that the equipment, the policies and the people are safe and know how to apply their skills and knowledge to keep communities safe.”

He says the service is committed to reducing the number of accidental house fires and his crews carried out more than 2,153 home fire safety visits in the region and fitted 1,944 smoke alarms in the last year.

One of his first tasks was to

restructure, and there are now three dedicated senior fire officers whose primary focus is the Renfrewshire area, and he’s enthusiastic about working with Renfrewshire Council and other partners.

He said: “The open approach to somebody new coming in has just been phenomenal. I’m privileged to be coming into an area that’s performing well with regards to our well-equipped stations and highly trained and motivated staff. Our reputation in Renfrewshire is very high.”

A £1.3million state-of-the-art community safety hub in Paisley’s Mill Street serves as the base for the Renfrewshire Community Safety Partnership which brings together the fire service along with a range of council and police approaches to community safety issues.

He added: “It’s really all about our service fitting with the partnership’s approach and how we coordinate our prevention agendas together so that we don’t focus on anything in isolation.

“There’s an appetite for all of our partners to pull in the same direction and the leadership of Sandra Black comes through loud and clear and is refreshing. The culture I’m nurturing here within the fire service aligns with that.

“The multi-agency partners talk about things that are happening and there is quick fire information sharing. It could be anything from mental health issues to housing or the police or fire service and dealing with problems.”

He is keen to exploit training opportunities both with the Council and police but says one of the most crucial issues is that everyone is equipped for whatever lies ahead.

He said: “The key for us is being prepared and how we respond in an emergency, how we know each other’s role and how things join up. It’s about being ready, training and learning and working together.”

YEAR OF YOUNG PEOPLE

The future’s bright 2018’s Year of Young People is aiming to highlight the essential role that young people play in Renfrewshire’s future. We caught up with some of our young employees to find out what they think about working for the Council.

Name: Mark King Age: 21 Name: Amna Lateef Age: 22 Role: Graduate Intern (HR&OD) What was your route into employment at Renfrewshire Council?

I went onto the Invest in Renfrewshire website and applied for an open position. I had to do an interview and then a presentation on a particular project. The presentation was quite hard because I’d never really worked with the Council before, this meant I had to do a lot of background research.

Which part of your job do you find most satisfying?

I love that I’m constantly learning. My line manager has been so supportive by sending me on lots of training courses and helping to develop me.

Role: Sports Coach (Street Stuff) How did you get involved in your role at Street Stuff?

I spent time helping out at the venue, volunteering and then moving on into a paid role. To further a career in sport, I’ve found that volunteering is key. Most employers want their staff to have as much experience as possible and working with Street Stuff and the Council was a great opportunity to do this. Personally, the most positive part of all this has been the growth in my confidence since I began working with Street Stuff. If that can happen to me, it can happen to others who get involved.

What impact do you think Street Stuff has had for you and other young people you work with?

It puts you on a pathway. I’ve always been interested in sport, but I never thought I could take it further. With Street Stuff’s help, I’ve been able to attend college and university.

Name: Katie Cochrane Age: 19 Role: Modern Apprentice (Marketing, Design and Events) The 2021 campaign was a huge moment for Paisley and Renfrewshire, how did it feel to be part of that team?

Being part of the Paisley 2021 campaign has been an amazing experience! I have learned so much from the campaign alone which I typically wouldn’t have done otherwise. I was very lucky to join the team when the campaign was in full swing, there was a real buzz not just about the office but around the whole town too.

What would you say to a young person who wanted to work for the Council?

I would definitely recommend it. I’ve loved it and learned so much working for the Council—there’s a real sense of community and a lot of opportunity to progress.

Names: Jake Brown and Josh Sheeran Age: 20 and 19 Role: Apprentice Electricians (Building Services) How did you gain the opportunity to work for the Council?

Jake: I went to college first, then I applied for every apprenticeship under the sun. I knew I wanted to be an apprentice and I knew I wanted to be an electrician so it was just a case of finding out where. I actually got offered a job somewhere else but the job with the Council was a lot more convenient.

Josh: I applied straight from school. I found that the Council was a lot quicker in getting back to me. I, too, had one potentially set up elsewhere but where this job was located, the kind of work involved, everything about the job with Council was better than going elsewhere.

Do you think that, as a young person, your views and contributions are valued?

Jake: You have a say in a lot about what you do here.

Especially about learning and developing your skills and getting more experience and working with people who can show you the ropes.

Josh: That’s why I did this apprenticeship. I had very basic wiring experience, I asked for some more experience in industrial work, they said absolutely no problem and that’s what I’m doing now.
