The city of Sparks kicks off its celebration of the holidays with its annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony and parade. Sparks Mayor Geno Martini will turn on the tree lights and carolers will sing during the ceremony which takes place on Friday, Dec. 5, from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Victorian Square in downtown Sparks. The festivities continue on Saturday, Dec. 6, with the Ugly Sweater Run at Sparks Marina, 300 Howard Drive, as well as the Hometowne Craft Faire at the Sparks Heritage Museum and Culture Center, 814 Victorian Ave., and the Santa’s Village at the Glendale Schoolhouse. The parade begins at 1 p.m. on Victorian Avenue. This year’s theme is “It’s Happening Here All Year Round: A Celebration of Our Hometowne Events!” Parade-goers can expect to see Santa on a jet ski, snowmen eating ribs and elves driving a ’65 Mustang along with other holidaythemed floats, marching bands, entertainment and more. The University of Nevada, Reno’s faculty ensemble featuring violinist Stephanie Sant’Ambrogio, cellist Dmitri Atapine and pianist Jim Winn will present a program of works that are reminiscent of the winter. Selections include Sonatensatz for Violin and Piano by Johannes Brahms, Piano Trio No. 2 by Anton Arensky, “Space Jump” for piano trio by Fazil Say and Franz Schubert’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E-flat major. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, at Nightingale Concert Hall, Church Fine Arts Complex, 1335 N. Virginia St., at the University of Nevada, Reno. wilderness wingding Friends of Nevada Wilderness hosts its eighth annual event featuring live music, food, beer and wine, a silent auction, raffle and a volunteer awards ceremony. In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act, this year’s theme is the “wild ’60s,” and guests are encouraged to dress in costume. The fête begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, in the California Building, 75 Cowan Drive, at Idlewild Park. The event is free, although a $10 suggested donation is appreciated.
