Hansen shouldn’t quit

Welcome to this week’s Reno News & Review.

Re “On paper” (News, Nov. 20): May Ira Hansen defeat the attempts to force him from the 2015 Speakership.

He has committed no crime, rather uncommonly has told all who care to read or listen what are his values and sincere beliefs.

For too long personal slurs, bias and propaganda have degraded the American ideal of legal and Constitutional protections for freedom of speech, practice of religion, to petition, association, innocent-until-proven-guilty and against double jeopardy. Hansen is being hounded for what he thinks, not for what he has done. He is being prejudged rather than given credit for what he has said he will do as Speaker or has done as a legislator.

His constituents knew his character well and chose to re-elect him.

Silencing those voices and others throughout Nevada who might be in agreement with them is tyrannical. Not long ago, people could express differing opinions openly.

Subsequent debate was enlightening.

Too many politicians now hide their true opinions and work deviously to impose law and policy on an unhappy citizenry.

Without comment on any of Hansen’s beliefs, his fight is worthy.

If he prevails, it will be a blow against intimidation and thought control.

Re “On paper” (News, Nov. 20): Homosexual research done by homosexuals is in line with the man’s statements. It aligns with Hepatitis A and their other diseases, which is never in the media. The writer has an uninformed opinion: extremely bigoted.

The Boss The governor was agitated because his favorite newspaper was coming out with an expose that included the writings of his party’s Assembly Speakerelect. He’d read it at midnight, the moment it posted online, but the newsprint copy was due at any moment. Just as he sat down to work on his State of the State speech, the red and black phone on his desk rang. “Yes, sir,” he answered, a bead of sweat trickling down his temple.

“I want you to call Ira Hansen and tell him to withdraw from consideration for Speaker.”

“Yes, sir.”

We’ve noticed in years past that the responses often have a theme. Zombies and anthrax were popular a few years ago.

But we’ll see, it’ll probably be ISIL beheading American orphans with Ebola, which would be ironic, particularly if they infected them.

Still thinking Re “Life and how to live it” (Left Foot Forward, Nov. 26): Well written and gracious, as usual. Sheila Leslie is much more a Nevadan than a partisan. I know that I’m not alone in wishing she would run for office again. Her resume reflects a life spent in service to others, and she has the depth of experience voters might look for in a candidate for governor. Just a thought!

Death penalty defense The issues in Ferguson are not about race relations or police procedures, but rather about Mike Brown’s poor decisions last August.

Most of us are parent-taught at an early age the difference between making good versus poor decisions.

Brown obviously never received that training.

Brown awoke that fateful morning and created his own “perfect storm” of poor decisions: Robbing a business and battery upon the clerk; ignoring lawful commands from a police officer; unprovoked attack on said officer; fleeing from the officer; then finally turning and rushing the officer. Brown’s poor decisions determined his own fate, not his race nor any law enforcement procedures.

It’s tragic many businesses got looted in Ferguson, Missouri. I do not want to hear any whining from the shop owners, however. Anybody who didn’t see this coming and owned a business there was pretty blind. In this country, you have the right to defend your property with firearms. Shame on the NRA for not going in there and offering arms to these businesspeople and shame on these owners who let their lives be destroyed by a bunch of deadbeat thugs. If the liberal governor is going to play politics and wait a day after the riot to send in National Guard troops, then people have to exercise their own constitutional rights. ...

Evidently, many of these deadbeats are not very thankful this holiday season for the people who take risks, run a business and pay taxes that make it possible for them to stay home all day and collect their welfare checks. The results of these types of incidents all evolve from our country being a nanny state.

To swear or not to swear? Walking along the Riverwalk, a man was filming the Truckee. When I walked around him, he was using the “F” word speaking to a friend.

My response was, “Hey don’t use those words.” His response was “F you.” Is this really who we are as a culture? We are so casual that we think nothing of speaking that way to a complete stranger? When walking along bumping into someone, you say, “Excuse me.” They never respond, and instead look at you as if there is something wrong with you saying excuse me.

Sitting in the Quizno’s on West McCarran on Saturday, three young men, one young girl, college age, sat behind a friend of mine and I, swearing nonstop. Why would this young woman sit there, and not ask them to stop? Or is it that she would be shunned for being a better person?

We need to look at these basic things, and make changes. After Ferguson, Missouri, there seems to always be an excuse for acting out, instead of taking the higher road and being the better person. Rather than having respect for your elders, authorities or anyone who you are offending. Are we moving backwards?

Buy local After reports predicting the best weekend ever, sales in retail stores plummeted on Black Friday weekend, dropping to the tune of 11 percent nationally. Reported assaults, though, seemed stable, if somewhat more likely to be recorded on camera phones and posted to YouTube.

According to BusinessInsider.com, “Total spending was expected to reach $50.9 billion, down from last year’s estimated $57.4 billion.”

We find that encouraging on several levels. First, people managed to stay away from those stores that forced their employees away from their families on Thanksgiving Day. Good. That’s what John Lennon might have called “instant karma.”

The NRF said that Prosper Insights & Analytics polled 4,631 consumers for them, http://bit.ly/ 15MnCPU, which should make for an accurate survey.

But the usefulness of surveys often comes down to how the data is interpreted.

The NRF says there were three reasons sales dipped: “Early holiday promotions, the continued growth of online shopping, and an improving economy changed the way millions of people approached the biggest shopping weekend of the year.”

In fact, the actual dollars spent on Cyber Monday sales were down about 3.5 percent, according to IBM’s Digital Analytics Benchmark.

Part of the explanation of NRF’s three rationalizations is that since the economy is improving, people don’t have to be so careful with their money, so they don’t care as much about deep discounts.

Really, the retail lobbyist organization’s explanations strain credulity.

The bad news is the election. That wigged me out for a while. But I’ve been traveling, and I retired from my practice so I had time to do what I want.

Good news, bad news.

Anyone who was out and about in the Truckee Meadows could see that the locally owned stores were doing pretty well, while the huge retailers had gaps in their parking lots. Don’t get us wrong, those big-box retailers were doing all right, but it wasn’t like years past.

Is it possible the message has gotten out, that “Buy Local” campaigns—our newspaper’s is now in its seventh year—are being heard? Even the city of Reno has gotten in on the act, with its own “Buy Local” effort. (Hey, why mess with success?) Local business owners who wish to get their business on the city’s map can go to www.reno.gov/business/start-a-business/ buy-local-reno.

“If everyone shifted 10 percent of their spending to local businesses, we would generate $350 million in our community!” claims the city of Reno’s site. We’ll go with that.

Now, don’t mistake our encouragement of local shopping for schadenfreude for the chain stores. Even the big box retailers provide jobs for our local people.

Still, a high tide at a big-box hardware store doesn’t float all the local boats in the way that spending money in a local business does.

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again. This year, if you’re going to spend money on commercial Christmas gifts, spend your money in a way that makes sense to you. Take advantage of the “deep discounts” in those chain stores that ship their profits out of town, but especially remember the local retailers, artists and restaurants.

The life you improve may be your neighbor’s. Ω

Ira Hansen’s own words brought him down Almost anyone should have learned something from Assemblyman Ira Hansen’s public and humiliating lesson: Your words can come back to haunt you.

Hansen, chosen by his Republican peers to lead them into the new world of majority power, was forced to decline his promotion by to speaker of the Assembly after Sheila Leslie a well-researched article in this newspaper by veteran journalist Dennis Myers revealed his racist, misogynistic, and homophobic rants as a former columnist for the Sparks Tribune.

Progressive activists in Reno are all too familiar with the Hansen family, after decades of opposing virtually everything the most famous member of the clan, Janine Hansen, has espoused. And she’s been very busy, opposing gay rights, abortion, sex education, the Equal Rights Amendment, and all things progressive.

I’ve never forgotten an encounter I had with Janine more than 25 years ago when she paraded around a city park with ugly placards, chanting

hateful things about gays. One sign read: “Gay—Got AIDS?” That day, I told her she was disparaging a member of my family and to please stop. Her eyes glazed, and she looked directly at me and screamed her hate in my face.

Since then, Janine has mellowed a bit as she’s taken her extremist views directly to the Nevada Legislature as a lobbyist for the Nevada Families Eagle Forum, affiliated with Phyllis Schlafly’s National Eagle Forum.

She’s more respectful in that venue, dressed in her Sunday best, but it still doesn’t take much prodding to get her to explode.

Ira seemed cut from the same cloth as his more famous aunt, writing vitriolic weekly columns in the Sparks Tribune and dispensing much of the same as a paid talk show host on KKOH, Reno’s right-wing talk radio station. I ignored him as I tried to ignore all the Hansens, unlike some progressives who were obsessed with the family.

Ira disavowed the political organization his family practically created, the Independent American Party (IAP), saying he would rather win an election as a Republican— which he did, running for the Assembly in 2010—and then work within the Republican Party to move it ever rightward. During his first legislative session, he was quick to leave the room whenever his Aunt Janine testified to emphasize his separate identity. He wanted everyone to know he was not disguising himself as a Republican just to get elected, a strategy pioneered by none other than Sharron Angle, who switched from IAP to Republican and then won an Assembly seat.

Progressives were appalled by his victory, but not surprised. In his two terms of service in the Assembly, he’s performed as expected, loudly proclaiming his views, which don’t seem to have changed much from his columnist days, although he told Jon Ralston in a recent interview, “I haven’t called anyone a homo in a long time.”

But as the pressure mounted for him to withdraw as the Speaker designate, Ira blamed everyone but himself. He insinuated Myers took his words “out of context” in retaliation for a perceived slight decades old. He then talked of a conspiracy led by Gov. Sandoval and his advisers to remove him from his post because of his opposition to a secret “billion dollar” tax increase.

Aunt Janine agreed, in a letter published last week in the Elko Daily Free Press. “We have just witnessed the political assassination of Ira Hansen. ... This politically correct assassination serves directly the purpose of the DemocratRepublican cabal that enslaves Nevada.” She goes on to say the “uppity conservatives have received the message ... follow the party line or you will be taken out to the woodshed like Ira.” A member of the party that loves to tout personal responsibility, Ira wanted none of it, even though it was his very own words that caused his demise. Ω

Immigrants are not the enemy President Obama’s Nov. 20 Las Vegas speech announcing his executive orders to defer deportations and issue work permits for several million immigrants is important for Nevada.

Nevada has the most illegal immigrants per capita in the United States. Republicans warned that by Brendan it would be like waving a red flag Trainor in front of a bull, but the president decided to go ahead and play matador. Now it is up to Republicans to decide whether to charge him full on or just snort and paw the ground. Or even get creative and pass a series of good immigration bills in 2015!

Led by then Sen. Obama, Democrats blocked President Bush’s comprehensive immigration reform because the AFL-CIO told them to.

Lately the unions are worrying less about cheap labor coming into the country because they have desperately stooped to trying to organize the unskilled working poor. The greens and liberal environmentalists don’t care much for immigration, because, well, they don’t care much about people, period. Obama’s

clemency was really against his own 2009-2011 self when he was deporting Latinos faster than George Bush —whose extended family is heavily Latino—would ever want to.

The Republican House Tea Party caucus is blocking the bill passed by the Senate with bipartisan support, including from Dean Heller and Harry Reid, for “comprehensive immigration reform.” I was Tea Party before there was Tea Party, but on the libertarian side, and I do not much understand this conservative fear of immigration. But the word “comprehensive” scares me too because the federal government cannot stop streakers from getting into the White House but pretends it can control mass migrations of human labor.

The Republicans cannot signal that they want extensive deportations. That idea is relegated to the fringes of the debate along with “self deportation” and building walls on the border with electric fences and crocodile-infested moats. I see the problem as once

again simple supply and demand.

If you have 12 million illegal immigrants, your ability to allow the labor supply to meet the demand is in serious question. But Republicans will not drop their senseless talk about “securing the border first.” Security doesn’t come merely from cracking heads, locking people up or deporting them. It comes from trade and social interaction.

After Sam Houston defeated Santa Anna and won Texas’ independence, people told him to garrison the border in case Santa Anna came back. Instead, he set up just a series of trading posts with only enough troops to guard the stores. Will the Republicans pass a series of laws that emulates the spirit of Sam Houston? I can hope, but they are proven unwilling to do what Ronald Reagan, their beloved Gipper, wanted: open the borders, both ways.

“Times are different now,” they say. What changed? Oh, I forgot: 9-11 changed everything! Include

the effects of Reagan’s own senseless war on drugs as well.

Although not fans of “the end justifies the means,” most libertarians are happy that some Nevadans here illegally will not be ripped from their families and deported. The constitution is shredded again, but it already is like the confetti thrown at the World Series winning San Francisco Giants.

Congress continues to pass vague laws that unelected bureaucrats and judges get to “interpret” any way they want. Politicians and voters only get upset when the other team is issuing executive orders, not their own team. Where is Congressional hysteria over Obama’s executive orders to wage war without a Congressional declaration?

When you tolerate your side’s power grabs, you empower the other side as well. Face it: Obama is now the liberal Dick Cheney. Ω

Virginia Lake hearing set On the evening of Thursday, Dec. 4, the city government will hear from the public on what to do with Virginia Lake.

The options the city wants discussed are: • Keep the lake the way it is now • Circulate water in the lake better • Reduce the size of the island • Get rid of the island According to a city news release, “City of Reno staff will compile the information from public meetings, opinion survey results, and other input received and return to Reno City Council with project alternatives and a recommendation for [the] Council’s consideration early in 2015. City Council will then give staff direction on the project.”

The lake was created by the New Deal’s Works Progress Administration in 1937. It was designed for swimming and wading— an option not included in the city’s list—with an average depth of five and a half feet. It covers 24.5 acres and is fed by the Cochran Ditch, which enters at the northwest corner. The Nevada Legislature passed control of the lake and other WPA projects to Washoe County in 1939. The lake is now managed by the City of Reno.

Shopping list If you feel like rewarding good corporate behavior during the holiday season, these are some of the chains with local outlets that stayed closed on Thanksgiving, allowing their workers to spend the day with their families or friends: Barnes & Noble, Burlington Coat Factory, Costco, Dillard’s, Hobby Lobby, Home Depot, Marshalls, Patagonia, Pier 1 Imports, Sierra Trading Post, and T.J. Maxx.

Hansen speaks Assemblymember Ira Hansen said he has changed his mind about Israel.

“I just came back from an almost two-week tour of Israel as the guest of John Farahi,” he told KRNV’s Terri Hendry in an interview.

“He took my wife and I on a tour, and I was wrong, OK? I want to make that clear. I was completely wrong on what I was saying about the nation of Israel.”

In his Sparks Tribune column, which he wrote from 1994 to 2010, Hansen wrote regular, often vituperative, denunciations of Israel, excerpts from some of which can be read at our Newsview blog, http://tinyurl.com/na8d4qz. Hansen did not say whether he felt any responsibility to take action to ameliorate the effect of those 16 years of columns now.

Hansen also responded in the Hendry interview to the disclosure of numerous columns denouncing gays in often lurid terms.

“So that everybody understands, I have a gay brother, okay?” he said. “He’s my baby brother, and I love my brother completely.

He’s actually married to his partner. Those are the kind of things that people don’t know.”

However, according to his own writings, being close to an individual who is gay doesn’t necessarily soften his feelings toward gays generally. He wrote at least three columns about a boyhood gay friend. When the friend died of AIDS, the resulting column became notorious among local gays: “Nature has checks and balances built into it; cross those lines, and you will pay a price.”

Hansen, briefly slated to be Nevada Assembly speaker, also repeated his charge that the disclosure of his writings was part of an “orchestrated attack” to undercut his influence. “I’ve been in here for two full terms and the stuff existed previously. They were only brought up when I started to go into leadership. ... [It’s] an attempt to eliminate a conservative from a leadership position having an influence on the state of Nevada.”

But the Las Vegas Review-Journal, which has a far-right outlook in its editorials, responded, “When Hansen had no power, when he was in the Assembly’s minority, outside leadership, his opinions had no influence on state policy. Once someone seeks or gains greater power, they can expect more attention and more vetting.” It also said, “[I]n fact, it was his own repugnant writing that marginalized him.”

Online tolls Net neutrality doesn’t bewitch Nevada activists When President Obama spoke out on Nov. 10 to put new life in the fight for net neutrality and get the Federal by Communications Commission to Dennis Myers back off on undercutting neutrality, there was little reaction from Nevada. In a state with organizations dealing with everything from teacher pay to nuclear waste, the issue of the cost of the internet falls flat.

Dean Heller, who supports ending net neutrality, which would allow internet service providers (ISPs) to start charging more for speed on the web. After Obama’s speech, Heller said in a prepared statement, “The President’s approach takes dynamic technology and turns it into another utility like electricity and water.

And just like power and water, today’s internet would become stagnant instead of remaining vibrant.”

Actually, Obama was not calling for change. He was calling for keeping in place the net neutrality under which the internet has always

operated. That may be regulation, but there is little evidence that the internet has ever stagnated under its requirements.

Heller wants to allow ISPs to create fast lanes and charge more for them, which might well limit innovation since the fastest service would be most available to those able to pay—large corporations— and smaller and local companies and individuals could be left with the slow lanes.

One way of demonstrating what would happen if net neutrality was ended can be seen by examining what a corporation did when it stopped abiding by it. In 2008, mammoth cable corporation Comcast, facing a threat from a video technology offered by BitTorrent, blocked its customers from using the upstart company.

Without net neutrality, that kind of online behavior would be allowed.

“Net neutrality has been built into the fabric of the Internet since its creation—but it is also a principle that we cannot take for granted,” Obama said in his statement. “We cannot allow internet service providers to restrict the best access or to pick winners and losers in the online marketplace for services and ideas. That is why today, I am asking the Federal Communications Commission to answer the call of almost 4 million public comments, and implement the

strongest possible rules to protect net neutrality.”

The difficulty many people have grasping what net neutrality means meant they depended on popular media on and off line. And that often was shaped by who was telling it: New York Times: “Obama Calls for Strict Net Neutrality Policy.”

Fox News: “Obama calls for more regulation of Internet providers, industry fires back.”

Wired: “Great News for the Web: Obama Urges FCC to Uphold Net Neutrality.”

Popsugar (a celebrity news site): “Net Neutrality Called Obamacare For the Internet.”

That celebrity site drew its headline from a Twitter comment posted

by Texas Republican U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, who wrote, “‘Net Neutrality’ is Obamacare for the Internet; the Internet should not operate at the speed of government.”

Since ending net neutrality would likely result in slower service for most people, that prompted a site called The Oatmeal to post a “Dear Senator Ted Cruz” letter that illustrated in lively prose and cartoons how the internet works. It went viral.

Role of campaign money The drive for separate speed lanes, supported by Sen. Heller, has drawn comment in Nevada, if not organized activism.

Anexeon, a Las Vegas information technology corporation, has issued a statement that takes issue with ending neutrality: “The proposed plan will allow users to pay ISPs a premium for delivering their content to audiences more quickly. In the race to find an audience, it’s like a company can bribe the ISP to get a head start. ... Essentially, this will turn the Internet into a ‘pay to play’ situation. Corporations with deep pockets will easily be able to pay the premium to get their content released first, giving them a hugely unfair advantage over the little guys trying to be heard. In fact, if a major corporation happens to deem an independent startup to be a threat, they can potentially pay extra to have their competitor’s message squashed. This new idea totally flies in the face of the entrepreneurial spirit which has allowed so many small startup companies to fairly find success in highly competitive markets.”

Longtime activist Mylan Hawkins, founder of the Nevada Diabetes Association, once posted a comment on a Los Angeles Times story about Heller’s support for ending neutrality: “Another one of those issues where the senator would like to convince you that ending net neutrality is in your best interest. ... This is not about jobs. This is about allowing a few companies to control access, programming, speed etc. Fact: the more open the net the more innovation and the more jobs. Put it in the hands of a few. Watch your fees go up and your service go down.”

Why Heller has taken such an aggressive posture in favor of fast lanes, since lanes would likely inconvenience most of his constituents, has been a subject of speculation. On a Heller Facebook page where the senator wrote, “The net neutrality rule will cost Nevada and the nation good paying jobs and should be overturned,” a reader calling himself Chukk T Ron then replied, “Your numbers are BS at best. Dean, you stand on the wrong side of this issue. How much have telecoms paid into your campaigns?”

In fact, Heller has received contributions from Clear Channel, Comcast, Cox Enterprises, the National Association of Broadcasters, News America (Fox),

and Viacom. The telecommunications industry was not listed among his five top money sources, but number two on that list is leadership political action committees, so more telecom money could have reached him indirectly that way.

Heller’s outspokenness on net neutrality has been matched by relative silence from his colleague, Senate Democratic floor leader Harry Reid, who has kept his head down on this issue. In May, Matt Sledge at Huffington Post suggested Reid’s tongue is tied by the same grease that loosened Heller’s: “Like Boehner, Reid has received far more in donations from net neutrality foe Comcast than supporter Google in recent years. Comcast is the No. 2 donor to Reid’s campaign committee and leadership political action committee, to the tune of $116,800 since 2009. Google is way back at No. 63, with $39,100. Reid’s chief of staff, David Krone, is also a former Comcast executive.” Ω

Land management The Nature Conservancy works with mining industry to conserve sage grouse Planning for the potential listing of sage grouse under the Endangered Species Act is vital in order to ensure Nevada is prepared for likely changes.

The Nature Conservancy has partnered with two mining companies— by Sage Leehey Barrick Gold and Newmont Gold—to create conservation plans for sage grouse and other species on 1.7 million acres of Nevada land. About 20 s age l@ percent of the land is privately owned by the companies, and the other news review.c om 80 percent is public land for which these companies have the grazing and mineral allotments.

“The Nature Conservancy is using landscape conservation forecasting tools to identify what management actions will have what long-term benefit or long-term impact on the landscape so that these companies will continue to operate and mitigate any negative actions that they have for sage grouse or for other species,” said TNC state director Matthew Tuma.

It will take about three years to produce the modeling to prescribe management practices for the land. TNC is in year two with Newmont Gold and in year one with Barrick Gold. Analysis of possible management scenarios for the land will begin in 2015, according to associate state director and mining partnership liaison Michael Cameron. A variety of aspects that affect both sage grouse and their habitat will be evaluated.

You can still get conservation benefits that are based off of sound science that the Nature Conservancy is producing in a transparent way, but also have some lines for economic development.”

Cameron said that many people have a misconception about the impact of economic development on sage grouse habitat.

“The number of acres that will be lost to fire and weeds is in the order of 10 times as much as is expected to be lost to mining and energy production and those kinds of things,” Cameron said. “The things that are really most threatening are not mines and transmission lines. It’s really getting a handle on some of these changes on the landscape. Reno’s homeless shelter is under new management, and that makes people nervous

On Thanksgiving Day, a well-liked volunteer group served dinner outside Reno’s homeless shelter on Record Street for what many thought was the last time. They got a reprieve, but beginning next week, We Care Volunteers will be dishing out hot meals to hundreds of hungry people four times a week in the back parking lot of the Burner Hotel.

The volunteers say they have no choice but to disappear, thanks to a new policy—a newly enforced one, anyway—that requires them to clear out of the Community Assistance Center parking lot by 6 p.m. Their usual start time is around 7:15, more than an hour after the center closes, which shelter officials say is a safety threat and a breach of their operating contract. Drug use, prostitution and fighting are more rampant after dark, they’ve explained, and the facility’s meager security presence can’t withstand nighttime crowds.

This isn’t going over well.

In order to wrap by 6 p.m., “we’d basically have to take the entire afternoon off, and we all have daytime jobs, so it doesn’t work,” said volunteer Kelley Shewmaker. “We work to earn the money to buy the food to feed the homeless.”

He figures the new rule is more about territorialism than good faith.

After all, Pat Cashell has been heading the local branch of Volunteers of America—which is basically a faith-based managing body for the CAC’s biggest programs—for just two months. And he’s the one who opted to enforce a 6 p.m. cutoff that had otherwise been forgotten.

“I think it’s [all because of] the new guy on the block,” Shewmaker said of Cashell, the son of former mayor Bob Cashell. “He’s rolled up his sleeves and wants to make some changes. I’ve seen it in business time and time again.”

“They really want us out,” he added. “That’s the feeling I get. If they say they want to close down the food service because of crime, well, it’s been going on in that location for five years. If it wasn’t a concern a year ago, why is it a concern now?”

Meet the new boss Cashell is an affable guy. He comes across as a straight shooter, connects with his homeless clients in a relaxed and authentic way, and wears hoodies and jeans like everyone else. He even cusses like a normal person, which’ll put your average journalist at ease. He’s fun.

Walk the grounds with him, and you’ll meet his public—the woman who runs up to give him a side hug, the teenage kid who jokingly gives him hell and then delivers a sincere thank-you, and the quieter types who pull him aside to say the same.

There are many.

The man hates to sit at his desk. Milling and talking with everyone is the best part of the job, he’ll tell you, and he pushes hard to enroll people in the assistance programs they need. Resources at hand include case-managed mental health services; shelters for men, women and families; housing assistance; school-district liaisons and a detox clinic. They’re all on campus.

Apart from the closing-time deal, Cashell has also tightened up the center’s “day area”—a no-frills, fenced yard that many refer to as the Pit. Until recently it was known

Cashell doesn’t like to call it the Pit, by the way. He also doesn’t like the fact that the day area has supposedly become so hard and drug-ridden that the shelter’s numerous recovering addicts are afraid to visit. He and a cleaning crew recently spent a day scrubbing it down, removing paraphernalia, human shit and other fun surprises.

“I want to go play catch or something out there with my son,” one shelter resident called out at a crowded impromptu meeting last month, “but I feel like I can’t.”

Cashell vowed to have a talk the next morning with the people who frequent the day area, and swore he’d shutter the space if it doesn’t improve.

This was by no means an ultimatum to the 100-or-so men he addressed the night before, mind you. Those guys were actually waiting around for an AA meeting at the time. Those guys are part of the program.

“There’s a group that’s totally programresistant who want to cause problems, who just want to sit on their butts all day and not do anything with their lives, and that’s not OK with me,” Cashell said. “But the people who are here trying, they deserve a fair chance.”

Nary any nepotism Former Mayor Bob Cashell, Pat’s father led the charge to build the homeless shelter on Record Street. But despite his surname, the younger Cashell is no privileged bureaucrat.

He’s been homeless at times himself, and was a meth addict for about a decade.

His checkered past is no secret, and two years ago, a Volunteers of America fundraising breakfast was the perfect platform to share his story. His father was facing openheart surgery, and asked him to speak in his place that morning.

“My dad and I couldn’t stand each other for my whole addiction, so this felt like the greatest thing he’d ever asked me to do,” Cashell recalls.

Lo and behold, Pat “brought the roof down,” says VOA spokeswoman Sandy Isham. “People were crying.”

He agreed to return the next year. Before long, he’d joined the organization’s advisory council.

“If you ever need someone to run your place, I’ll do it,” he once joked with regional president Leo McFarland.

Maybe it was only a half-joke, but at any rate, it registered. The higher-ups figured Cashell could learn the ins and outs of running a nonprofit, Isham said, but they couldn’t teach him to care about the population it serves.

He got the job.

“There have been rumors about nepotism,” he said. “Believe me, if I was going to [go that route], I wouldn’t have said, ‘Hey, can you stick me down at Fourth and Record Street?’”

Nepotism isn’t the only rumor floating around. There’s also word that the whole campus could close.

“It’s so not true,” Cashell said. “I would never do that. I mean, where would these people go? These people depend on us here.”

Hot meal program director Amber Lynn Dobson has been feeding people at Record Street for years.

Smaller changes are probably imminent, but they’re still under wraps.

Take this politely vague email message written last week by city community development official Elaine Wiseman: “The VOA, in conjunction with the city of Reno, are reviewing the current policies and procedures and hope to make some positive changes in the near future.Unfortunately, we are simply at the planning stage and none of the proposed changes have been approved at the executive level. Therefore, I am not comfortable sharing what those changes are, as it would be merely speculation at this point.”

Right.

A moving target The Reno area’s homeless population is tough to quantify. Really tough.

A rather imprecise yearly headcount puts the number at around 4,000 people, Isham said, and Washoe County School District officials estimate around 3,400 students are homeless. The list can include foster children, families living in weekly motels and others who are “doubled up,” which is wonkspeak for crashing with relatives.

Doubled-up kids actually comprise the highest number of students who qualify in WCSD, said Katie Morales, coordinator of the district’s Children in Transition Program. Among other things, CIT does its part to provide clothing, academic fees and transportation for homeless children, some of whom are continually on the move from one attendance zone to another.

“Every time a child switches schools, they lose around four to six months’ worth of learning time,” Morales explained, so the district buses the child back to the original campus.

“It’s a new homelessness that a lot of our families have experienced,” she added, citing as an example the 2011 fire that displaced some Caughlin Ranch residents. “People who you never thought they were going to be homeless lost homes and qualified for our program. … Then there are other reasons that families have been homeless for many years.”

Untreated mental illness is one, and it’s major. No one can accurately account for how many local homeless people are mentally ill, however, and a Renown spokesperson declined to provide the number of psychiatric patients without housing. Maybe it’s impossible to pin down.

Nonetheless, “There’s a homeless population that primarily deals with illness,” said shelter resident Blake Franzen. “It’s why they’re homeless—they suffer from some kind of illness, whether it’s drug addiction, mental illness. … Me, I’ve got a plate with seven screws in this ankle.”

He nodded toward his injury.

“The cold weather’s hell on it,” he said.

“I’m doing some rehabilitation right now, and if it doesn’t work, I don’t have any choice but to go where the weather’s warmer, where I can tolerate it.”

Franzen happens to be well-versed in city-planning meetings, and stays abreast of budgetary data as it relates to Reno’s homeless population (and everything else).

“Most people think homeless people don’t want to work, or don’t want to do anything,” Isham said. “But they all desperately want to stand on their own two feet. That’s where true confidence comes from.”

Another shelter client, John Stribling, said he came to town for a wedding and was mugged outside the Cal Neva.

“They even took my teeth.”

Stribling said he quickly made plans to return to his home in Alabama, but he’s grateful for temporary housing in the meantime.

The Reno native said he was truly homeless 10 years ago, and remembers seeing some of the same faces that’re still at the shelter today. He knows men who rely on day labor for work, he said, because they’re felons and can’t find much else. Others have gambling problems. Plenty more are just like him—in transition.

“There are a lot of guys here who do try,” Stribling said. “There’s the crew that don’t give a damn and the group that does, and it only takes a day or two to figure out who they are.”

No questions asked Many who stand in line for the late-evening dinners in the CAC parking lot aren’t enrolled in the shelter or its myriad assistance programs, so they don’t have access to the three meals a day available to residents. The facility puts a 90-day limit on each applicant or family’s stay, and it’s often a full house with a waiting list and beds for around 300 people. The adjacent Reno-Sparks Gospel Mission also has shelter space, mostly for recovering addicts.

People who are outside when the CAC opens do get doughnuts in the morning, and they’re a very short walk from Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada (also known as the St. Vincent Programs, or St. Vincent’s for short), which serves a six-day-a-week lunch at 11:30 a.m. The Gospel Mission offers meals, too.

Up to 800 people are apt to eat lunch at St. Vincent’s, said Catholic Charities spokeswoman Auburn Harrison, though the number

She’s used social media to keep her supporters aware of the closing-time issue, urging them to write letters that she can present to city staff.

“Anyone can come in,” she said.

“Absolutely no questions asked. You walk in, you eat.”

Virtually every day in November was also covered by volunteer groups in the CAC parking lot, with We Care chief among them.

St. Vincent’s is next door to the CAC, but Harrison said she’s not familiar with We Care.

The volunteers “haven’t approached us that we know of” for the use of outdoor space at St. Vincent’s, she said, or for any other reason.

In any case, “It’s a lot of the same population that we’re all really trying to help.”

“A woman came to me crying the other night,” Dobson wrote on the group’s Facebook page, “because for her, having access to the day area [meant] she could come and socialize and feel safe until the gates closed at 8:30 ... now, at 6 p.m. she is out on the street. ... I used to look forward to having a meal and being able to talk to you. Now I feel like I am not welcome here anymore.”

“Yes, we serve a meal to those who cannot provide one for themselves—but it is so much more. We bring normalcy to the lives of people who are typically looked down upon because they are on the streets. We bring friendship, food, and love to those who need it most.”

Cashell sees the volunteers’ plight a little differently.

“None of these people are our clients,” he murmured when Dobson’s hungry fans began to assemble in the parking near the former tent city. “And that’s because our clients don’t feel comfortable out here. They’re not safe.”

Shelter employees haven’t screened or usually even met the people who gather to wait—sometimes hours in advance, and sometimes pretty irritably—so it’s true that they could be anyone. The pair of unarmed guards who’re on the clock at night aren’t exactly formidable. They’re trained to cheerfully engage with folks who fall asleep on the sidewalk, for example, and see if they can’t find them some help. They are by no means equipped to deal with hundreds of newcomers after the gated

parking lot is supposed to be closed to the public, Isham and Cashell have said.

Cashell took a neutral tack about whether he’d like to see more of a police presence there.

“Police presence is always better in a situation like this, but I know that they are tight already with what they do,” he said. “The police do a great job with how they support us already.”

Fair or not, the handful of organizations who serve food in the parking lot on alternating days all have agreed to leave by 6 p.m.—all but We Care. An early departure is obviously easier on weekends, however, and Dobson’s group operates Monday through Thursday. But one group,

I

n a space filled with wandwaving, sword-wielding, capeflinging villains, warlocks, heroes and anime princesses, the inaugural Wizard World Reno Comic Con was an exhibition of some of the most recognizable icons in pop culture.

From steampunk jewelry, to fantasy and horror books, to superhero emblems, it seemed every cultural niche was represented.

Many of the small vendors brought booths packed with buttons, T-shirts, toys, and of course, comic books. Most ventured from out of town, traveling from convention to convention selling their custommade goods, comic collectibles, or simply obscure paraphernalia, like T-shirts for grammar aficionados.

Outside of perusing all of the odds and ends for sale, the three-day event was packed with activities, ranging from sitting in on celebrity panels, to participating in a costume contest, to playing one of the board games in a game library set up in the middle of the room.

A few of the events held were in conjunction with popular reality television shows. Conventiongoers had the chance to be tattooed by the cast of A&E’s Epic Ink or participate in sci-fi speed dating, a trend chronicled in TLC’s Geek Love.

Even in the midst of all of this, there was still a local presence.

One Northern Nevada influence came from a performance by the Tomo Club, one of the smaller groups formed from the Reno Video Game Symphony.

Another came from R.S. Archey, a Reno author who brought his two selfpublished books, The Seven Spires and Crucible, to his booth. With

elements of Arthurian legend, fairy tales, and even vampires in his works, Archey received a warm reception.

“A lot of people came over just because I’m a local author,” said Archey. “But many are interested in the fantasy genre and others, when they hear the word ‘vampire,’ their eyes light up. Here, I feel like I’m with my people, like I’m right at home.”

Cosplayers were everywhere.

Cosplayers are those who spend hundreds of dollars—or the equivalent in blood, sweat, and tears—forming themselves into the likeness of their favorite fictional characters.

Some, like Lady Snow Bird, dressed as anime character Princess Euphemia, commissioned someone else to make her costume. But many made their own.

Keith, an engineer in the Army, spent more than a year and more than $2,000 making a Ghostbusters cosplay. Armed with resin, fiberglass and blueprints found online, Keith made his own replica of the suit and proton pack.

Keeleigh West, in her first endeavor to craft a cosplay outfit, created a pair of mechanical wings out of PVC pipe, wire mesh and feathers. Functioning with a hidden lever system, West’s homemade wings raise and lower to complete her outfit as the character Castiel from the show Supernatural.

Cosplay at the convention granted adults the chance to dress up in costume and have it be socially accepted. Ranging from Frankenweenie in a stroller to two vibrantly-youthful grandmothers dressed as Catwoman and Spiderman, costumes saw no age limit, gender, or even species.

The convention’s greatest strength was the emphasis on socializing and

interaction. Regardless of whether it was a celebrity, vendor or a simple attendee, the swarming, pulsating atmosphere compelled guests to get off cell phones and talk to each other.

It’s one reason why so many families chose to attend together.

Former comic book store owners and seasoned fans Rick and Laurie Reyom waited in line with their son, Tony Puls, for their chance to meet Bruce Campbell. Graphic novels, cosplay and fantasy have been shared interests for their family and have allowed a bond to remain, even as Puls grew into adulthood. The Comic Con here in Reno allowed them a chance to explore and appreciate their interests together.

Parents of younger children saw the convention as an opportunity to instill the same flame and interests of the superheroes of their youth. Some families donned the outfits of their favorite characters, like Michael, dressed as DC Comic’s Black Adam, who took his son Jack dressed as Marvel’s Captain America, while others were costumed as a pair, like the battle-ready, father-daughter duo of Eugene Shim, dressed in full riot gear, and Olivia, armed with a toy dagger.

“I think it’s fun to see the kids with their families,” said Michael Shane, a cosplayer dressed as Obi-Wan Kenobi. “Seeing people being able to be young at heart is important, but seeing parents bring their children into the world of this stuff is even better.”

Campbell’s memoir, If Chins Could Kill, hints at the mythic proportions of the pedestal on which his devotees have placed him, and the man known for his part-man, part-chainsaw heroics as Ash in The Evil Dead films did not disappoint.

“He signed my chainsaw!”

14-year-old Robert exclaimed, acknowledging the plastic tool affixed to his arm with duct tape.

In the age of technology where printed word seems to be consistently beaten out by the more immediately visceral movies and television programs, comic books still find a place among fans.

Facilitating a place for comic book creators and illustrators to meet with their audience continues to spark interest in their work.

“For me, [the convention makes it all] a lot more personal. … I’ve only been reading and collecting comic book-related things for about a year, but it makes me want to continue [to do those things],” said Clint Veil, who has now amassed a wide array of DC comic books and collectibles.

For many, picking a favorite part of the event was like picking a favorite child. But, as in families, choices were made.

“The small vendors and littleknown artists are the best,” said Kathryn, an attendee sporting elf ears and a Superman shirt.

“I like the character dressed as Lady Death. But then, I just like all the sexy characters,” said Rick Royem, over his wife’s snickering.

“I like the churros,” said a 7-yearold Harry Potter.

Especially considering this was the first year in town, the Wizard World Reno Comic Con received a great response, with several comic-convention regulars praising the venue, the program and atmosphere.

While there was some gossip that Wizard World might host a convention in Las Vegas instead of Reno next year, the recently released schedule on the company’s website shows both cities on the docket, with a reappearance in Reno scheduled for November 2015. Ω

Kirk of the original Star Trek cast, and Lou Ferrigno, who played Hulk in the 1970s television show, The Incredible Hulk.

Norman Reedus and John Bernthal from The Walking Dead and Eliza Dushku, most known from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, were also present.

As the on-sabbatical art professor from the University of Nevada, Reno winds down his artist-in-residency at Instructables. com in San Francisco, his latest project is not so monumental, but intends to make an outsized impact on the American consciousness (or maybe conscience).

In Drones We Trust is a pretty simple idea. First, DeLappe designed and laser-cut rubber stamps featuring an MQ1 Predator Drone. He has sent out around 450 of the stamps to friends, artists and supporters.

The idea is to place the drone in green ink in the sky over the buildings on the back of paper money, like the Lincoln Memorial on the back of the $5 bill. At three-quarters of an inch across, the image looks like it belongs there. After the money is stamped, it’s photographed and placed on a Tumblr site, http://indroneswetrust.tumblr. com. By stamping money, it highlights the connections among our government, our currency, and our taxation—which funds the “defense” establishment. It’s

also open-ended, allowing people to attach their own feelings to the sight of a killing machine attached to a symbol of government.

The hope is to get people thinking and talking about drones. The superficial symbolism is easily interpreted: Americans are rubber-stamping murder by not speaking up.

U.S. apathy with regard to drones “is extraordinary to me,” DeLappe said. “I think it’s partially because we’ve reached this ultimate place in this relationship with high technology. We worship it so much, and it’s so active in our everyday lives and so benign mostly. I think we just think it’s this clean, surgical killing, and it’s preventing terrorist attacks at home, and all the things we’ve been told all the time. In fact, it’s extremely dirty and very destructive, and I think most people just don’t care. ...

And that’s part of the impetus to this project. A study came out last week kind of questioning the surgical nature of these strikes. It said basically there were 41 targeted men, and it took 1,147 people to be killed to actually get those men. … And along the way, they’re killing women, children, civilians.

I think political apathy is a kind of disease Americans suffer from, and unfortunately it allows for these very questionable and illegal activities to go on.”

Ultimately, DeLappe’s intention is to bring drones home, to make Americans aware of the problematic nature of our relationship with technology, government policies and other countries.

“If it’s just me stamping my money, that’s kind of nothing,” he said. “But I’ve got probably 350 people around the country and around the world doing it, so potentially, we’ve got thousands of dollars in circulation that will have this very subtle image of the drone. Most people won’t even see it, but those that do see it, I hope it’s an interruption. ... It’s a way to get someone to think.” Ω

Steakhouse chefs are supposed to know how to cook a steak, so when I go to a steakhouse, I usually look for someby David Preston thing with as much flavor but a lot more creativity. I found it at Washoe Steakhouse. ’Twas a cold fall night when I walked into the country-inn-looking establishment. The fire glowed welcome. The wood motif interior had a rustic elegance, and the friendly, professional staff wore the longer aprons reminiscent of the old East Coast chophouse restaurants.

A full service, eat-in bar opens at 4 p.m. with signature cocktails like the Tahoe Tingler Martini ($8) made with Tahoe Blue Vodka, lemonade, muddled jalapeño and cucumber garnish. Four beers on draft ($4-$6), 15 in-the-bottles ($4-$7), both domestic and international, and even a gluten-free, Red Bridge for Missouri ($7). There is a very proper, 100-bottle wine list ($19-$225), and there are also 18 splits ($19-$130).

The Tavern menu ($13-$19) changes with the seasons. The regular menu ($12-$34) includes steaks, seafood, pasta, lamb, chicken and a vegetarian offering. There are 11 appetizers ($7-$13) with some nice twists, like Angus meatballs ($8) and warm artichoke and goat cheese melt ($8). Straightforward soups and salads (6-$8) round out the menu.

As I perused the Autumn menu, I heard black mussels with chorizo and serrano peppers ($13) calling my name. It’s a generous serving, enough for two, with a savory aroma of green spicy Castilian meat, Neptune’s bounty, a little onion, and a

subtle cinnamon finish. The coarsely chopped meat draped the in-shell mollusks, and using my mini trident, I combined the portions of meat and mussel for an amazing texture-flavor sensation.

I needed something big and elegant to wash it down. There are 26 by-the-glass wine offerings ($5-$16). I went with the Catena ’11 Vista Flores Malbec from Argentina: ripe, concentrated dark and red fruit aromas with mocha and delicate floral notes of lavender and violet. It’s rich and filled with notes of sweet spice and a touch of leather. The finish presents soft, well-integrated tannins with bright, crisp acidity.

As I mentioned, I was after something different, and the homemade chicken pot pie ($18) fit the bill. Out came a 4-inch-tall, Frisbee-diametered, golden disc that announced its presence by sending the smell of grandma’s kitchen to my olfactory sense from six feet away. I broke the piping hot dome to receive yet another burst of good-ole-days scents, and with the first bite I was a kid again.

Simplicity … carrots, potatoes, celery, onion, and generous chunks of meat swimming in a light gravy of supreme chicken essence. The vegetables were not mushy but rather gently al dente. Comfort food with a capital C. A nice white to complement this gastronomic pleasure? The St. Supery ’12 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc ($8) was the answer. Brilliant shades of pale yellow laced with youthful notes of green. Green lime and grapefruit aromas bounce from the glass, accompanied by vibrant citrus notes of lemon zest and a hint of caper. Zippy citrus flavors like grapefruit and green lime coupled on the palate. This is an opulent and vibrant wine that took the pot pie from down home to uptown with every sip.

Chef Ubaldo Valdez-Saltana, who creates these flavor laden dishes, wouldn’t let me leave without a taste of his signature dessert, classic bread pudding with warm whiskey butter sauce ($6). Even the warm, thin slice felt like pudding in my mouth, and the sauce was rich and gooey with a buttersweet vanilla and whiskey flavor. Washoe Steakhouse also boasts a rich dessert and after-dinner drink menu as well. For a steak lover, this place is a destination. For a foodie, it is a discovery for your palate. Ω

It’s all relative The Theory of Everything The marriage of Stephen and Jane Hawking takes center stage in The Theory of Everything, director James Marsh’s sweet and powerful depiction of love in the face of adversity.

The film showcases the talents of Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables), who gives a remarkable performance as Hawking, renowned physicist and eventual Pink Floyd by vocalist. Redmayne depicts a relatively Bob Grimm healthy Hawking at first, a slightly awkward but brilliant Cambridge student smitten with g b ri m m @ ne w s re v i e w . c o m classmate Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones of Like Crazy). Redmayne transforms as the film progresses, slowly but surely depicting the physical deterioration of Hawking as he suffers from ALS.

Jones is equally powerful as Hawking’s first wife, a woman who refused to let him waste away after his diagnosis. The two marry knowing that the road ahead will be a rough one. Hawking’s initial prognosis had him living no more than two years, a prediction he has outlived by about 50 years.

The movie is a love story first, with Hawking’s musings about black holes and the origins of the universe taking a back seat.

Redmayne and Jones are utterly convincing as the couple. Marsh treats their courtship in a magical, glimmering sort of way involving awkward school dances, followed by a memorable wedding sequence. The film unabashedly celebrates their romance.

If there’s a small beef with the movie, it’s that it feels a bit false in its portrayal of Stephen and Jane’s eventual separation after 25 years of marriage. Jane eventually winds up with Hawking caregiver and music teacher Jonathan Hellyer Jones (Charlie Cox), while

Stephen goes off with his nurse, Elaine Mason (Maxine Peake), and it’s depicted in a very neat and tidy way. No jealous fits, no pain in the loss of the relationship. Stephen and Jane just sort of nod at each other, with Stephen acknowledging that “Jane needs help,” and they part ways as a couple.

For entertainment purposes, I’m OK with Marsh and screenwriter Anthony McCarten (who based his script on a Jane Hawking book) focusing on the fairytale element of Stephen and Jane’s coupling. They managed to stay together for quite a while, longer than many couples.

If the filmmakers had chosen to make this a movie about their true relationship struggles, I suppose it would’ve been a different movie altogether.

There’s a palpable beauty and sweetness in the time they spent together, and that’s what the film stresses. It cops out a bit, but that doesn’t wind up being a deal killer. The movie stops when the two separate in 1990.

For the true story of where they stand now and what happened in their new relationships, you must consult the Internet.

Seminal moments in the life of Hawking are covered, including the introduction of his computer-aided voice and electric wheelchair. It’s uncanny how accurately Redmayne captures that radiant Hawking smile. It’s a performance so good that you forget you are watching an actor portray somebody and not simply spying on the real guy.

While Redmayne surely has the showier role, Jones provides the emotional core of the film as Jane. Her work here is her best since her breakthrough performance in Like Crazy, although she did shine last year in The Invisible Woman. Both will probably find themselves in the running for an Oscar.

As biopics go, The Theory of Everything isn’t terribly introspective or revealing. It’s an idealistic love story involving an iconic figure, and it winds up being a very romantic one. Being that it stops nearly 25 years ago, a sequel involving Hawking’s second marriage and his cameo on Big Bang Theory would afford Redmayne a chance to revisit the role, right?

Yeah, that’s probably not going to happen. Ω

Big Hero 6

Disney and Marvel deliver one of the year’s best animated films in this delightful story of a boy and his big, puffy robot. Hiro (voice of Ryan Potter) is an inventor, as is his brother Tadashi (voice of Daniel Henney). While Hiro likes to win money at robot fights, his brother is concentrating on helping the world with Baymax (voice of Scott Adsit). Circumstances arise that leave Hiro in the company of Baymax, who turns out to be rather adorable and chummy for a robot. Hiro updates Baymax to fly and fight, then enlists his friends to join him in the fight to stop a mysterious masked man from stealing one of Hiro’s inventions. Baymax and Hiro are a touching, fun screen combo, and the animation here is dynamite. The movie is a blast from start to finish, and it actually does well with the heavy emotional stuff. It’s visually inventive with a strong script that makes you care for its characters. I’m quite certain there will be a sequel. It should be noted that “Feast,” the more traditionally animated short that precedes the film, starring a little Boston Terrier-looking pup named Winston, is also a real winner.

John Wick

The latest Keanu Reeves vehicle is a true stunner. It boasts a high body count, and offers cinematic proof that you shouldn’t mess with a man’s best friend. In the film’s opening moments, we learn that the title character (Reeves) has lost his wife, and he’s taking it justifiably hard. After a member of the Russian mob kills his dog and steals his car, we find out that Wick is a former assassin with guns and gold buried in his floor. The loss of his ride and canine friend are enough to make him spring back into action, and he does so in spectacular fashion thanks to Reeves and directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, both making their debuts. In the pantheon of action movie directing debuts, this one stands very tall. Willem Dafoe makes a nice mark in a few scenes as a double-crossing hitman. Adrianne Palicki, the actress who was supposed to be Wonder Woman until NBC saw the pilot and puked, shows action movie chops as another gun-for-hire that can’t be trusted. This is a great-looking movie that mixes in some strong emotions with its awesome set pieces. It’s nice to see Keanu Reeves back in the saddle.

Interstellar

The latest from writer-director Christopher Nolan is a triumphant piece of moviemaking, a science fiction film that dares to go outside the lines and actually create things and hypothesize. In the future, Earth is getting swallowed up by dust, all the crops are dying, and the Yankees really suck (wait … that’s true now!). Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a farmer and former test pilot, is raising his two children after the death of his wife. He and his young daughter Murph (Mackenzie Foy) discover a strange site that just happens to be the remnants of NASA, where an old scientist (Michael Caine) is in the middle of a plan to save the human race.

Cooper eventually winds up flying a mission to enter a wormhole and explore distant planets for their ability to sustain life. The major drawback is that time gets all warped during space travel, and the slightest delay can cost him many years back on Earth. The movie gets a little crazy, farfetched, and possesses more than its share of plot holes. I don’t care. It’s a terrific viewing experience that made me think it’s an all-time great science fiction film, even if it is a little crazy. Nolan wrote the film with his brother Jonathan, and they come up with some ideas that seem quite impossible, perhaps illogical. Yet, within the context of this sprawling, great movie, it all works just fine. The movie offers many great surprises, performances and brain teasing concepts. It’s also weird and insane, and I love it for that.

Horrible Bosses 2

While the first Horrible Bosses got by on the charms of its three stars, the second one winds up being a near miss. Nick (Jason Bateman), Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) and Dale (Charlie Day) have decided to go into business for themselves after the events of the first film. They wind up on TV pitching a stupid idea called the Shower Buddy, where they are seen by Rex (Chris Pine), the son of billionaire businessman Bert Hanson (Christoph Waltz).

This leads to that, and the boys wind up in a kidnapping scheme involving Rex trying to double-cross his dad. The screenplay strains to bring back the likes of Jennifer Aniston as the naughty dentist and Kevin Spacey as the embittered ex boss. It also doesn’t help that Day and Sudeikis are a bit overwrought this time out, their acts getting a little tired. It should be noted that Bateman is easily the funniest thing about this movie, effortlessly smarmy as always. I laughed a fair amount of times, but felt like the three stars would be better served with all new material and premise. I like seeing them together, but they need a new place to play.

Dumb and Dumber To

After a lot of stops and starts, this one finally makes it to the screen 20 years after the original. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels return as Lloyd and Harry, movie history’s two biggest dumbasses. While Carrey slides right back into the role of mischievous goofball, Daniels seems to be forcing it a bit, so the chemistry is off. Bobby and Peter Farrelly make their two stars labor for laughs with a script that is unfunny with a bunch of hit and miss gags (most miss). The plot involves Harry finding out he has a daughter, and the two going on another road trip in search of her (Harry also needs a kidney, thus the need to find the daughter for donor purposes). There’s a gag involving an old woman under the covers that I can’t believe made it into a PG-13 movie, and a couple of other decent laughs, but the chuckles are far and few between. Diehard fans of the original will be happy to see these characters back in play, but that will be accompanied by the sadness of wasted opportunity. An after credits scene claims there will be another sequel 20 years from now. I’m hoping that’s a joke, because there really is no need to visit these characters again. Also, I can’t believe how nasty this film is to Kathleen Turner, and I’m a little mad at myself for thinking the way she is taunted is the funniest thing in the movie.

It should be said that this only covers half of the third book in the popular series, and everything builds up to quite the cliffhanger ending. Lawrence is good here, although a couple of scenes are a bit jarring, and not in a good way. She does get a chance to sing, and she sings quite well. Philip Seymour Hoffman completed his role before his death, and he’s typically great.

The Hunger Games: MockingjayPart One

After a rousing second chapter, the Hunger Games franchise gets a little darker and introverted in its third installment. The results are perhaps a slight step back from the truly winning film that was Catching Fire, but you are still dealing with a good movie in this one. Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), after being rescued following her complete annihilation of The Hunger Games, is being used as a propaganda tool to get at the evil Capitol government and its wily leader, President Snow (Donald Sutherland). As it turns out, Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) survived the second movie,

Nightcrawler

Jake Gyllenhaal is the very definition of serpentine in this scathing look at TV news and the lengths producers and stringers will go to for ratings and a payday. When Louis Bloom (Gyllenhaal), a desperately unemployed man, happens upon a car accident in L.A., he notices men filming the incident and selling the footage to news outlets. He procures his own camera and proceeds to do the same, eventually forming an alliance with a struggling news director (Rene Russo) and proving there is really nothing he won’t do to get his footage on the news. Gyllenhaal is excellent here, his second great 2014 performance after playing twins in Enemy.

The guy is really stretching out. According to Nightcrawler, gone are the days of dignified anchormen and heroic news gatherers. The tie-wearing talking heads and scrappy field reporters have been replaced by bloodsuckers and sycophants, with the likes of Louis Bloom leading the sick charge. The baser instincts that may’ve been a small part of an intrepid news reporter’s makeup have taken over and, unfortunately, they appear to be delivering what the people want.

Drawing from several regional Mexican styles, the band synthesizes by Kent Irwin their own breed of high-energy brass music for the modern age. One song could be a cumbia, a dance song popular with younger audiences.

Another could be a corrido, a traditional trail song. The corrido could be updated to the modern narcocorrido, taking those old cowboy songs and giving them a drug-trafficking theme.

They could slow it down with a bolero, a song about romance and passion.

41musicbeat Tamborazo San-Marcos synthesizes several traditional style for a revolutionary sound.

Counting seven members, Tamborazo San-Marcos includes cousins Juan and Miguel Guillen on saxophones; Javier Rodriguez on trombone; Sebastian Guillen on valve trombone; and Cesar Meza on trumpet. Juan Almanza Zacatecas holds down the rhythm on his keyboard, and Humberto Islas beats the drums.

The music is fast-paced, wild and fun. Saxophones shred the high register, the trombones provide the punch.

The bass element, usually provided by a tuba or sousaphone, is supplemented

by Zacatecas on the keys. Islas is a knockout on his spartan percussion layout: two metallic toms, a snare, and a stand holding various lengths of bells.

Most of the guys hail from Aguascalientes, in the heart of Mexico, where the annual San Marcos Fair is held for three or four weeks. Drawing millions of people, the festival is known best for its bullfighting and cockfighting events. People may come for the sports, but they stay for the music, provided by tamborazo bands playing on the streets.

It may come as a surprise to some locals that Tamborazo San-Marcos is not the only band of its kind in Reno. Group members admit there are at least six other such bands in the area. If they sweat the competition, it certainly doesn’t show on their faces or on their résumé. They’ve been together for nine years, and perform only when they feel like it. Weddings, charities and barbecues have served as the stage for Tamborazo San-Marcos, and that’s fine with them.

Many of the members come from musical families and hope to keep the tradition. Juan Guillen watched his father play guitar for many years before trying it himself. Now that he’s a father, he makes sure his daughter practices her clarinet. Zacatecas says he’d like his kids to get into the tamborazo style, but they’re young, and don’t speak Spanish, so they’re more inclined to get swept away with the newest pop flavor of the week.

Tamborazo San-Marcos don’t have anything to prove, to this generation or the next. They just want to keep you dancing until you fall on your ass. Ω

Tamborazo San-Marcos takes all of these classics and plays them without vocals. Occasionally, an audience member might ask them to step to the microphone and sing the words to the tune. But for the most part, people know the songs already, and can sing along if they want. The band prefers to shut up and let their instruments do the talking.

“Tamborazo style is an imitation of the marching band,” explains saxophonist Juan Guillen. “This goes back to Pancho Villa’s time, when the military bands started making up their own songs.”

Revolutionary ballads and songs about the rugged borderlands may have formed the style, but the tamborazo is also about exploring tender feelings. The song “Pagina Más” is about a man embarking on a new chapter of his life after a breakup with his girlfriend. An old favorite from Sinaloa titled “Los Viejitos,” tells of an elderly couple shaking their hips on the dance floor.

“Then the old lady falls over,” says keyboardist Juan Zacatecas with a laugh.

The city of Sparks kicks off its celebration of the holidays with its annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony and parade. Sparks Mayor Geno Martini will turn on the tree lights and carolers will sing during the ceremony which takes place on Friday, Dec. 5, from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Victorian Square in downtown Sparks. The festivities continue on Saturday, Dec. 6, with the Ugly Sweater Run at Sparks Marina, 300 Howard Drive, as well as the Hometowne Craft Faire at the Sparks Heritage Museum and Culture Center, 814 Victorian Ave., and the Santa’s Village at the Glendale Schoolhouse. The parade begins at 1 p.m. on Victorian Avenue. This year’s theme is “It’s Happening Here All Year Round: A Celebration of Our Hometowne Events!”

Parade-goers can expect to see Santa on a jet ski, snowmen eating ribs and elves driving a ’65 Mustang along with other holidaythemed floats, marching bands, entertainment and more. Admission to the parade is free. Visit http://www.cityofsparks.us/ christmasparade.

The University of Nevada, Reno’s faculty ensemble featuring violinist Stephanie Sant’Ambrogio, cellist Dmitri Atapine and pianist Jim Winn will present a program of works that are reminiscent of the winter.

Selections include Sonatensatz for Violin and Piano by Johannes Brahms, Piano Trio No. 2 by Anton Arensky, “Space Jump” for piano trio by Fazil Say and Franz Schubert’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E-flat major.

Belittle Richard My girlfriend says she likes that I’m smart but says I can be “on” too much of the time. For example, if someone pronounces a word wrong or uses it incorrectly, I’ll correct them. If they talk about their fad diet, I’ll explain why it doesn’t make scientific sense. My girlfriend says I am “condescending” and make people feel bad. That’s not my intention. It’s a matter of right and wrong. How can I help her understand that I just care about getting the facts out?

If public humiliation were the key to proper pronunciation and correct word use, the hot new show on Bravo would be The Real Housewives of the Oxford English Dictionary.

Sometimes, immediately calling people on their errors is the right thing to do, like if you’re the guy keeping an eye on the big thermometer outside the nuclear reactor. In social situations, however, being right isn’t the point. The point is connecting with people, and you don’t do that by correcting them—showing them up with your mastery of “Hooked on Phonics” or explaining how stupid they are to be on that new diet they’re all excited about: “Your dinner’s going to give you cancer. Bon appetit!”

Typically, there are two kinds of people who think they know it all and have to hammer others with it immediately: 12-year-olds and the secretly insecure. Others who do this are narcissists—self-obsessed showoffs with a pernicious lack of empathy. But a few may have Asperger’s syndrome, which is associated with high intelligence, difficulty in understanding how others feel (called “mindblindness”), and a tendency to think in black and white.

For “aspies,” things are either right or wrong. Things they perceive to be wrong they find very disturbing, and they’re driven to right them—in conversation, or let’s say they get a love letter. What else is there to do but make corrections in red and send it back?

But even people with Asperger’s can learn to act empathetically by having someone help them understand how certain behaviors tend to make others feel and then memorizing socially appropriate responses (like smiling and nodding instead of challenging somebody to a duel over their misuse of the subjunctive). At the very least, you need to ask “Would it be okay if I told you what I learned while in the grammar police?” before diagramming somebody’s sentence on the restaurant wall.

Whatever your reason for going all conversational disciplinarian on people, as someone who values being right, you probably value being effective. Correcting people makes them feel attacked, which makes them defensive.

They won’t hear your corrections; they’ll just hear you telling them they’re idiots. Ironically, it’s by listening to people and giving them the sense that you like and respect them that you might get them interested in your ideas. Ω

ARIES (March 21-April 19): The National

Science Foundation estimates that we each think at least 12,000 thoughts per day.

The vast majority of them, however, are reruns of impressions that have passed through our minds many times before. But I am pleased to report that in the coming weeks, you Aries folks are primed to be far less repetitive than normal. You have the potential to churn out a profusion of original ideas, fresh perceptions, novel fantasies and pertinent questions. Take full advantage of this opportunity. Brainstorm like a genius.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): I enjoy get-

ting spam emails with outrageous declarations that are at odds with common sense.

“Eating salads makes you sick” is one of my favorites, along with “Water is worse for you than vodka” and “Smoking is healthier than exercising.” Why do I love reading these laughable claims? Well, they remind me that every day I am barraged by nonsense and delusion from the news media, the Internet, politicians, celebrities and a host of fanatics.

“Smoking is healthier than exercising” is just a more extreme and obvious lie than many others that are better disguised. The moral of the story for you in the coming week: Be alert for exaggerations that clue you in to what’s going on discreetly below the surface. Watch carefully for glitches in the Matrix.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Every one of

us, including me, has blind spots about the arts of intimacy and collaboration. Every one of us suffers from unconscious habits that interfere with our ability to get and give the love we want. What are your bind spots and unconscious habits, Gemini? Ha! Trick question! They wouldn’t be blind spots and unconscious habits if you already knew about them. That’s the bad news. The good news is that in the next six weeks you can catch glimpses of these blocks, and make a good start toward reducing their power to distort your relationships.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Now and

then, it is in fact possible to fix malfunctioning machines by giving them a few swift kicks or authoritative whacks. This strategy is called “percussive maintenance.” In the coming days, you might be inclined to use it a lot. That’s probably OK. I suspect it’ll work even better than it usually does. There will be problems, though, if you adopt a similar approach as you try to correct glitches that are more psychological, interpersonal and spiritual in nature. For those, I recommend sensitivity and finesse.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): What feelings or

subjects have you been wanting to talk about, but have not yet been able to? Are there messages you are aching to convey to certain people, but can’t summon the courage to be as candid as you need to be? Can you think of any secrets you’ve been keeping for reasons that used to be good but aren’t good any more? The time has come to relieve at least some of that tension, Leo. I suggest you smash your excuses, break down barriers and let the revelations flow. If you do, you will unleash unforeseen blessings.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): In 1662, Dutch

painter Rembrandt finished “The Conspiracy of Claudius Civilis.” It was 18 feet by 18 feet, the largest painting he ever made. For a short time, it hung on a wall in Amsterdam’s Town Hall. But local burgomasters soon decided it was offensive, and returned it to the artist to be reworked. Rembrandt ultimately chopped off three-fourths of the original. What’s left is now hanging in a Stockholm museum, and the rest has been lost. Art critic Svetlana Alpers wishes the entire painting still existed, but nevertheless raves about the remaining portion, calling it “a magnificent fragment.” I urge you to think like Alpers. It’s time to celebrate your own magnificent fragments.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You now have

a special talent for connecting things that have never been connected. You also have a magic touch at uniting things that should be united but can’t manage to do so under their own power. In fact, I’m inclined to believe that in the next three weeks you will be unusually lucky and adept at forging links, brokering truces, building bridges and getting opposites to attract. I won’t be surprised if you’re able to compare apples and oranges in ways that make good sense and calm everyone down.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): In 1989, Amy

Tan birthed her first novel, The Joy Luck Club. Her next, The Kitchen God’s Wife, came out in 1991. Both were bestsellers. Within a few years, the student study guide publisher CliffsNotes did with them what it has done with many masterpieces of world literature: produced condensed summaries for use by students too lazy to read all of the originals.

“In spite of my initial shock,” Tan said, “I admit that I am perversely honored to be in CliffsNotes.” It was a sign of success to get the same treatment as superstar authors like Shakespeare and James Joyce.

The CliffsNotes approach is currently an operative metaphor in your life, Scorpio.

Try to find it in your heart to be honored, even if it’s perversely so. For the most part, trimming and shortening and compressing will be beneficial.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21):

With both symbolic and practical actions, Sagittarius-born Pope Francis has tried to reframe the message of the Catholic Church.

He’s having public showers installed for the homeless in Vatican City. He has made moves to dismantle the Church’s bigotry toward gays. He regularly criticizes growing economic inequality, and keeps reminding politicians that there can be no peace and justice unless they take care of poor and marginalized people. He even invited iconic punk poet Patti Smith to perform at the Vatican Christmas Concert. You now have extra power to exert this kind of initiative in your own sphere, Sagittarius. Be proactive as you push for constructive transformations that will benefit all.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): The

limpet is an aquatic snail. When it’s scared, it escapes at a rate approaching two inches per hour. If you get flustered in the coming week, Capricorn, I suggest you flee at a speed no faster than the limpet’s. I’m making a little joke here. The truth is, if you do get into a situation that provokes anxiety, I don’t think you should leave the scene at all. Why? There are two possibilities. First, you may be under the influence of mistaken ideas or habitual responses that are causing you to be nervous about something there’s no need to be nervous about. Or second, if you are indeed in an authentic bind, you really do need to deal with it, not run away.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Science-

fiction novelist Philip K. Dick has been one of my favorite authors since I discovered his work years ago. I love how he reconfigured my mind with his metaphysical riffs about politics and his prophetic questions about what’s real and what’s not. Recently I discovered he once lived in a house that’s a few blocks from where I now live. While he was there, he wrote two of his best books. I went to the place and found it was unoccupied.

That night I slept in a sleeping bag on the back porch, hoping to soak up inspiration. It worked! Afterward, I had amazing creative breakthroughs for days. I recommend a comparable ritual for you, Aquarius. Go in quest of greatness that you want to rub off on you.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Do you enjoy

telling people what to do? Are you always scheming to increase your influence over everyone whose life you touch? If you are a typical Pisces, the answer to those questions is no. The kind of power you are interested in is power over yourself. You mostly want to be the boss of you. Right now is a favorable time to intensify your efforts to succeed in this glorious cause. No. Full-body orgasms have nothing to do with the genitals. So there’s no touching of the genitals, but it’s bringing the energy up.

What else do you do here? I notice you have something that looks like a massage table. What do you do with that?

So what do you do here at Awaken Aging?

I hold different classes, different workshops.

I do a lot of mentoring. One of my main things is healthy, happy relationships, natural remedies for sexual dysfunction, and death and dying. So I sort of mentor people of all ages through that.

How did you develop skills for such a wide variety of things?’

My background is psychology, social work, and gerontology, which is the study of aging.

And how did you develop that background? Degrees?

I have a degree in psychology, a degree in social work, and then half of my masters in gerontology.

So you brought those things together. What inspired you to bring it all to this place?

What I have learned from clients is that they come here for life-changing events. They walk in and that’s what they say, “I’m here for my life changing event” because they’re

stuck. They’re stuck on their path and they just don’t know where to go. Either they’ve been carrying stuff from their childhood that they haven’t been able to let go of, and they’re 66 years old, and they still have all that junk on them, or they’ve been married 30 years and their sex life sucks, right? And so, who do they talk to about this? As we’re aging, who do we talk to about consciously aging, being aware as we age?

Anything else we should talk about?

I have a few products here. One of the products I sell a lot of is hemp oil and hemp salve. A lot of clients are having issues and they’re taking three or four different [painkillers], all kinds of things that aren’t working, so they want to try hemp, and they come here and they try it ... it relaxes their body, helps them to sleep. I used it on my little wiener dog. He had a tumor on his paw.

The vet wanted $900 for it. I gave him that for two months, and it took the tumor off. ...

I use different healing tools to unblock energy. Where you’re sort of stuck. Like tuning forks, different kinds of crystals, aromatherapy, but no actual massage, no hands on. I know it seems totally weird, but back then, when Thanksgiving was simple, calm, and corny, the Friday after was usually a day where people—went back to work? Or hung around the house eating turkey sandwiches? Bizarre! Now, Black Friday is as culturally installed as reality television, and it’s battering the walls that protected Thanksgiving Day from Santa’s Satanic Shopping Sprees into splinters.
