LET’S TALK GUN VIOLENCE—SANDY HOOK FIVE YEARS LATER: Watch the documentary film Newtown, which looks at how the community of Newtown, Connecticut came together in the aftermath of the largest mass shooting of schoolchildren in American history. The showing will be followed by a talk about how our community can come together to address gun violence and a moment to honor the lives that were lost during the Dec. 14, 2012, Sandy Hook and the Oct. 1, 2017, Route 91 shootings. Squaw Valley Resort holds its second annual holiday celebration, which kicks off this weekend with a parade led by Santa Claus in a one-horse, open sleigh through Squaw’s “Ye Olde Christmas Village” en route to the KT Base Bar. The Glowstick Parade will begin at the KT Deck and proceed to Merry Wonderland (a.k.a. the Olympic Village Lodge). Fire dancers will display a daring dance leading to the illumination of the Winter Walk. Santa will continue the parade to Merry Wonderland where guests can look at the ice garden, listen to music by the Truckee Tahoe Community Chorus and enjoy savory treats as part of Taste of Squaw—a complementary tasting of signature items offered by Squaw’s Village and Mountain dining establishments. The festivities begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16, at Squaw Valley Resort, 1960 Squaw Valley Road, Olympic Valley. Other holiday-themed events will continue through the end of December. Born in Tampico, Mexico and residing and working today in San Francisco, performance artist and painter Ana Teresa Fernandez’s work addresses issues of place, identity and community. Nevada Museum of Art will host a presentation and panel discussion inspired by her installation in the Unsettled exhibition, “Erasing the Border (Borrando la Frontera),” a documentation of her performance piece based at the U.S./Mexico border. PAWS 2 READ: A reading program for children of all ages presented by Paws 4 Love. Friendly dogs lend a loving, nonjudgmental ear to beginning readers. This interactive dinosaur exhibit will transport you through a special Time Lab where you can observe enormous prehistoric dinosaurs, track modern day sharks in real-time or glimpse mythological, magical dragons. SATURDAY NIGHT STAR PARTY: The Jack C. Davis Observatory hosts free star parties every Saturday night year round, starting at sunset (except when there is snow on the roads). UGLY SWEATER WINE WALK: The Riverwalk Merchants Association hosts the annual holiday-themed wine walk along the Truckee River and neighboring streets in downtown Reno. Visit any of the participating Riverwalk District merchants on Wine Walk. You will receive a map to the participating locations, a wine glass and an ID bracelet that allows you to sample wine at any participating merchant. WINTERFEST: The holiday event returns with the Holiday Express Train, a custom, narrated journey around the inside of the stadium taking riders on a trip from Reno to the North Pole to deliver Santa’s Naughty and Nice Lists.
