'PRICELESS': HOSPITAL PARTNERSHIP BRINGS HEALTH CARE CLOSER TO HOME FOR RENFREW PATIENTS JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Renfrew Victoria Hospital (RVH) has taken another major step forward in ensuring Renfrew area patients receive quality health care close to home. Thanks to an expanded collaboration with The Ottawa Hospital, RVH now offers more surgical, urology and gynecology services in Renfrew. The decades-long mutually beneficial relationship between the Renfrew and Ottawa hospitals has already brought dialysis, cancer, radiology, Telehealth and other healthcare offerings to the Upper Ottawa Valley. The increasing number of services and clinics offered at RVH had dramatically reduced the number of long and often inconvenient and nerve-racking drives
into Ottawa and back for Renfrew area patients and their families. The latest advances were announced at a special gathering Oct. 30 introducing Dr. David Carver as the new site chief of surgical services at RVH. A large number of the who's who from The Ottawa Hospital, including CEO Dr. Jack Kitts, attended with RVH officials to celebrate the "patient-centred integration of services" for surgery, urology and gynecology. "What it means for the patients is that they'll receive the world-class care from The Ottawa Hospital closer to home," said RVH vice-president, patient care services Chris Ferguson. Calling it a "major milestone in health care," Dr. Kitts said the two hospitals are setting an example for the rest of the province.

RENFREW'S CHILD POVERTY RATE HIGHEST IN COUNTY STATISTICS ARE HEARTBREAKING, SAYS RENFREW COUNTY CHILD POVERTY ACTIVIST JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com In the latest statistics released by the Renfrew County Child Poverty Action Network, the Town of Renfrew has the dubious distinction of having the area's highest percentage of children living under the poverty line. Renfrew has taken over from Arnprior, which last year had the highest child poverty rate in Renfrew County. The statistics - based on 2015 information provided by the County of Renfrew indicate 150, or a third of Renfrew children under 18 live in a low income household. There are also 435 children under six years old living under the poverty line, a shocking 39.5 per cent.
Arnprior's rate, which was the highest in the 2017 report (based on 2011 Statistics Canada data) with 28.7 per cent of children under 18 in poverty, has dropped to 21.1 per cent (400) after a municipallyled effort in the last year to tackle poverty and homelessness in town. That effort has decreased the under-six rate from 36.6 per cent to 22.8. The report, based on after-tax income, indicates 15.1 per cent or 2,955 children under 18 (15.3 per cent under six) in Renfrew County live in poverty. With rental availability and costs and transportation major factors, urban areas tend to have a higher child poverty level than do their rural counterparts. Pembroke has a 23 per cent child poverty rate
(23.6 per cent under six), with Arnprior at 21.1 per cent (22.8 per cent under six) and Petawawa at only 4.7 per cent (3.7 per cent under six). In the rural townships at the south end of the county, Admaston/Bromley has the highest poverty rate at 21.1 per cent (23.8 per cent under six), followed by Whitewater Region (17.8 per cent, 18.8 per cent), Bonnechere Valley (16.9 per cent, 14.7 per cent) and Greater Madawaska (15.3 per cent, 16.7 per cent). Having the lowest percentage of child poverty are Horton (8.3 per cent, 8.6 per cent) and McNab/ Braeside (9.5 per cent, 9.1 per cent). Statistics Canada pegs the poverty line in Ontario at $20,676 for a single person and $41,351 for a household of four. However, many Renfrew County families living under the

poverty in Ontario costs every taxpayer $3,400, she added. Research shows poor people not only have a lower quality of life, they live much shorter lives and are more of a drain on the health system, often because they can't afford preventive measures. Smith noted that poverty
tends to result in poor eating habits and that more than 40 per cent of food bank users are children. Smith said that contrary to common belief, two-thirds of children living in poverty have a parent who works and over a third have parents who have permanent full-time employment.

RENFREW BENEFIT TO HELP CRASH VICTIM'S FAMILY JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Joanne Ciphery was renowned in the Renfrew area for helping others. Now her friends are encouraging the community to rally behind her family in their time of need. Ciphery was killed Sept. 9 south of Calabogie in a motorcycle crash that severely injured her husband, Brian Robertson. A benefit for Ciphery's husband and daughters, Brittany and Sophie Ciphe-
ry-Abboud, will be held at the RCAF Wing on Saturday, Nov. 24. The fundraiser will run from 7 p.m. to midnight with Renfrew band Fifth Street providing the music. There will be a luncheon, cash bar, 50/50 draws and other fundraising activities for $5 a person. Tickets will be available at the door. One of Ciphery's best friends, Maggie Lepine, is organizing the benefit with her husband, Marcel. "It's so important to me that the girls are looked after," said

hospital in the last couple of weeks, but it will be a long time before he's able to return home. The therapists have him sitting up and started him slowly walking again, she reported. "He's had so many surgeries and lost so much weight." Lepine said the gathering on Nov. 24 will not only raise money for Ciphery's family, but it will be a social occasion for people to reminisce about her many contributions to Trinity-St. Andrew's United Church, the
Renfrew Legion and the Renfrew County Poverty Action Network, among others. It is aimed at giving a boost to not only Robertson and the two girls, but to offer best wishes to Joanne's parents, Ray and Mary Ciphery, who have been in and out of Renfrew hospital since their daughter's death. Ciphery's unexpected death at age 54 has been an ordeal for Lepine as well. She says she still has a hard time believing that Ciphery, so full of life and caring, has
died. "I miss her a lot," she said. As well as being neighbours and good friends for 25 years, the two spent a great deal of time together volunteering in the kitchen, cooking community meals. "So many people knew her," Lepine said. "I'm hoping they all come." She said donations of food and draw prizes will be gratefully received. One of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski's first moves as Ontario's new Natural Resources and Forestry Minister was to announce free fishing is in the works for Canada's veterans. A news release two days before Remembrance Day unveiled a plan to amend the province's fishing regulations so veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members living in Ontario can enjoy free recreational fishing by early 2019. "We enjoy the rights and freedoms we have today because of the sacrifices of those brave women and men throughout history, and those actively serving to defend our rights and freedoms," said Yakabuski. "The people of Ontario are grateful for the service of our veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members who have, and continue to defend our freedom and values. These heroes deserve our gratitude and respect, and this is one small way we can show that." The amendment will mean veterans can fish recreationally without having to buy a licence. "Recreational fishing is an important part of the lives of many Ontarians," said Yakabuski. "Whether you're a beginner or expert, fishing is an excellent way to get outdoors, relax, de-stress and get involved in your local community." The news release also announced the province will ensure Royal Canadian Legion branches in the province are exempt from paying property tax, although in this area Renfrew County and local municipalities such as Renfrew and Arnprior having being doing that for several years (in Renfrew, the RCAF Wing is also exempt). The provincial government has also announced plans to build a memorial that honours "heroes" of the war in Afghanistan on the grounds of the Legislature and set up a hotline to assist military families moving to Ontario.

RENFREW EYES MORE MULTI-USE PATHWAYS JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Pleased with the response to the multi-use pathway along O'Brien Road, Renfrew officials would like to see similar trails added when upgrading work is done next year on Stewart and Raglan streets and the rest of Barnet Boulevard. Renfrew development and works director Mike Asselin told council Oct. 30 that the recently completed divided three-metrewide pathway from Hall Avenue to the Walmart entrance is being "very heavily utilized." The project cost $290,000. That's prompted a proposal for similar pathways on other major routes in town. It's a great way to "promote active transportation (walking, cycling)," as well as catering to a growing number of scooters, said reeve Peter Emon. The pathways are offlimits to snowmobiles and ATVs. The town is co-ordinating possible underground service and pathway upgrading with Renfrew
County as it moves ahead with plans for a $700,000 upgrade of Raglan Street South (County Road 52). Asselin explained the county is responsible for the roadway, storm sewer and curbs, with any other related improvements up to the town. An integrated, multi-use trail along Raglan tying into the Millennium and Algonquin trails via Barnet Boulevard and Gillan Road would be a real plus for the town, but it would be costly, he said. Coun. Tom Sidney suggested the town lobby Renfrew County to provide the connecting paths on Raglan and Gillan. "It's very busy out there," he said. Emon said he has raised the issue, adding it would be a "nice gesture" on the county's part to allocate some of the money saved when other projects came in under budget to the project. "As Raglan Street is so important to us," the county should make a presentation to council on the project, said Mayor Don Eady. Emon said a public session could likely be scheduled for February once the
county budget is passed determining whether the project will go ahead next year. STEWART STREET UPGRADE The town is also looking at what type of path could be built out to the old mall area when the Stewart Street reconstruction is tendered, as well as a connection along Bruce Street. The town hasn't heard anything yet about possible federal or provincial funding for more pathways, but has been told to be ready with proposals in case it becomes available, Asselin said. As for the Stewart Street reconstruction, a $140,000 contract was awarded June 29 for its engineering design. With the design work half done and expected to be complete this winter, there will be an open house soon to introduce the plans to the public, Asselin said. Included in the project is enlargement of the Stewart-Bruce intersection to make it easier for trucks to turn there. The Stewart Street project qualifies for provincial

Asselin also reported the $160,000 in Swinging Bridge repairs tendered late last year were completed with new boards, anchor bolts and "quite a bit of structure work." The swinging bridge should safely last another 15-20 years before needing more work, he said.

The second section of the Barnet Boulevard reconstruction project will be delayed until next spring. So will the reconstruction of sections of Prince Avenue and Carswell streets, even though the latter is a "real mess." However, the first half of the $2.3-million Barnet project and Vimy Street reconstruction will be completed this year, development and works director Mike Asselin told council Oct. 30. He explained that weather and construction delays have contributed to the new timeline for the Barnet project that sees the section from 8th Street to Gillan Road postponed until 2019. The town had already reset the timeline in late September when it asked that

The section between 8th Street and Gillan will be tackled next spring and summer. Barnet be reopened to twoway traffic to relieve congestion also caused by the downtown and Munroe Avenue projects.
However, water and sanitary and storm sewer work on the Raglan to 8th Street section has been complete with the first lift of asphalt planned for later in the week. Asselin reported the sidewalks, curbs and road base work is completed on Vimy Boulevard, with the first lift of asphalt planned shortly. The second lift will be laid before year's end, completing the $475,000 project, he added. Originally, Vimy, Prince and Carswell were all to be completed this fall. However, the $350,000 tender awarded on Aug. 28 for Carswell (Prince to Renfrew Avenue) and Prince is being postponed to 2019, with weather being blamed for the delay. Asselin said the town didn't want to start the project now and risk having it
being affected by bad weather. It won't cost any more to have it postponed, he noted. As Carswell is a "real mess," it will be patched to enable it to last the winter, he said. He noted that with the design work complete and tenders awarded for many of the projects, the contractors can make a quick start next spring. May 1 is likely a reasonable start time, he said. The town is still hoping it will receive Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund money for the rehabilitation next year of Ross Street from Thompson to Arnprior avenues and Arnprior Avenue from Ross to Queen streets. The engineering work is complete and the town hopes to hear in January whether the provincial money will be forthcoming.
'MUST BE REPAIRED': UNEXPECTED WATER MAIN BREAK TO BOOST WATER RATES JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com If Renfrew residents think their water rates are high now, having a serious water line breakage to fix won't help. At a special meeting Oct. 30, council approved the expenditure of $253,115 to repair a major water main over Smiths Creek, an unexpected break that seriously disrupted the system in parts of town on June 18. It was clear council hadn't much of a choice other than to approve the staff recommendation. Coun. Tom Sidney wondered if not bringing the line back into operation could lead to "a Walkerton" (where contaminated water killed six people and sickened 2,000 others in 2000). Development and works director Mike Asselin said not having the section in place "increases the potential" of having a situation that could lead to a Walkerton-type problem. The 16-inch water main loop is "critical to the integrity of the Renfrew water system and must be repaired," Asselin said in a report to council. "Not proceeding would compromise the water system. It's a very important project." The full project with design, survey and engineering work factored in is es-
timated to cost $363,342, money that will come out of the water fund life cycle reserve. "This will have to be considered when looking at (next year's) water rates," said Asselin, noting the unexpected expenditure could affect the town's efforts to boost its water reserves to $1 million. Asselin noted that as the water line crosses two legs of Smiths Creek near Stewart Park the provincial Ministry of Natural Resources and federal Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans will be monitoring the work. "All agencies recognize the importance of this emergency repair and have granted exemptions to permit the work to proceed," he told council. Renfrew received three bids on the contract, with RGT Clouthier Construction of Pembroke the low offer ($281,074 including HST). The town's consultant expressed confidence the company is "quite capable" of meeting the challenge (it completed a similar project in Deep River) despite the other two bids being significantly greater at $334,480 and $492,115. Asselin said the repair should be completed before Christmas with land restoration finished next spring.
The break in the asbestos cement main that carries water from the water plant to the tower and local supply mains caused large quantities of water to be lost rapidly. It depleted the town's stored water supply within 90 minutes, causing low pressure in the system and a precautionary boil water advisory for residents northwest of the Bonnechere River. Thanks to "quick actions" by the town's operations and office staff and Ontario Clean Water Agency officials, the disabled link was bypassed and the system was back to normal within two days, Asselin said. "In the last four years I've never been so proud of staff," said Mayor Don Eady, praising them for "springing into action" and working "astronomical hours" to counter the threat. "They acted so professionally ... I never felt the town was in any jeopardy," he added. "It gave me a lot of confidence in staff moving forward." Asselin explained the broken Transite pipe will be replaced with a fused high density polyethylene pipe, "allowing for reliable service going forward." However, new valves and an access road to the site are being included in the project to enable quick iso-

gration of stormwater outlet pipe on Wiliam Avenue. Council has dealt with the first two, but is still working on a long-term solution to stabilize the slope and stop the erosion in the ravine at the end of William Street. The town ordered some emergency site work in the summer. Those interim
emergency stormwater outlet and slope stabilization works have been achieved, as have engineering design plans for finalizing the work next year at a cost of $31,000. "There's no danger of the slope failing," Renfrew director of development and works Mike Asselin told council.

ADDED COSTS TO TAX NEW COUNCILS It didn’t take long for the euphoria of the local municipal election night(s) victories to be dashed with a dose of cold, hard reality. One week after five of the seven incumbents found they would be returning to Renfrew council (six if you count acclaimed Reeve Peter Emon), they were being told about new financial challenges at a special council meeting. In Arnprior, 10 days after five of the seven incumbents were returned, they learned that one of the town’s major industries will be closing, costing the area 160 well-paid jobs. The impending loss of the Sandvik plant is another blow to council’s efforts to bulk up the town’s industrial base. Council is already being criticized (rather unfairly) about not doing enough to persuade the Tweed weed company to locate cannabis operations in Arnprior rather than Smiths Falls. The new council will be tested to fill the empty Sandvik building by the time it closes by the end of 2019 and help find jobs for those who are losing their employment. If they don’t, then there could be a significant tax shortfall to make up in future municipal budgets. Over in Renfrew, council faces the doubling of the cost of operating the town landfill and an unexpected expense to fix a major water line break. The annual landfill bill will likely rise by around $200,000 (a two per cent tax levy increase) in 2019 and could continue to climb as the dump nears capacity. Council has responded by having the town take over operation of the landfill from Beaumen as of Jan. 1, but while that could help increase the facility’s lifespan, it’s not likely to stave off the rising operating costs. At the same meeting, council awarded a contract to repair the water main that broke in June causing water pressure woes in parts of town. The total cost of that project is about $360,000, which will most certainly impact next year’s water bills. Faced with these increases, council decided to defer until next year the demolition of the old sewer plant when finding out it will cost close to $400,000 instead of $150,000 as expected. Adding to the challenge is a new uncertainty related to provincial funding. The Progressive Conservative government is using the financial skulduggery of the previous Liberal regime as an excuse to be miserly when it comes to grants and other handouts to municipalities. The demise of the cap and trade program has already eliminated expected funds for several municipal "green" projects, such as the Algonquin Trail. So when your municipal council schedules its public 2019 budget meetings (Arnprior’s first one is Dec. 12), ratepayers should take special notice. The sessions are usually poorly attended with only a few special interest groups showing up to provide input. But with the new councils facing stiff financial challenges, they could do with some ratepayer guidance, encouragement and common sense as they try to determine spending priorities. Spouting off your ideas on social media after the budgets are approved is too late. If you can’t make the meetings, you can always share your views with a councillor or two (during the campaign, they all seemed to espouse better communication with constituents). If you have some worthwhile ideas on how councils can deal with these new financial pressures, speak up. Our new councils could do with all the grassroots help they can get.

One of the largest research reactors in the world, NRU was a landmark achievement in Canadian nuclear science and technology when it went into service on Nov. 3, 1957 on the banks of the Ottawa River in Chalk River, Ont. For over 60 years, the reactor served Canadians as a supplier of industrial and medical radioisotopes used for the diagnosis and treatment of lifethreatening diseases, as a major Canadian facility for neutron physics research, and to provide engineering research and development support for Canada's fleet of
nuclear power reactors. NRU was also the workplace of Canadian physicist Dr. Bertram Brockhouse, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1994. Using a technique known as 'neutron scattering' to explore materials, Dr. Brockhouse invented a new, highly sophisticated neutron instrument known as a triple axis spectrometer, which is now standard equipment at every neutron laboratory throughout the world. For its many achievements, NRU was recognized as a nuclear historic landmark by the American Nuclear Society in 1986. Looking to the future, the NRU continues to add value to the global nuclear research community. Analyses of materials samples from the reactor and its components, as well as investigations of materials irradiated during the final year of operation, will continue for many years, complementing the unique capabilities of CNL's recently launched Centre for Reactor Sustainability. First, the planting of Manitoba Maples (aka Box Elders) across the prairies and in eastern Canada reportedly played a role in the species' arrival in the east. The seeds of Manitoba Maples remain on the trees all winter, providing a rich source of food for grosbeaks. But many of those trees are now dead and gone. Second and more important, in the 1970s and early 1980s outbreaks of spruce budworm caterpillars in the eastern boreal forest provided abundant food for nesting evening grosbeaks. Since then, due to natural cycles and chemical controls, the caterpillars' populations crashed. The latter factor may be the critical one behind the rollercoaster population cycles. Spruce budworm caterpillars occur in astonishing numbers (outbreaks) roughly every 30 to 35 years. When those caterpillars are abundant, grosbeak numbers rise accordingly. When the caterpillars become scarce, grosbeak numbers fall. It's been exactly 30 years since the record number of evening grosbeaks was recorded on the Pakenham-Arnprior Christmas Bird Count. Indications are that spruce budworms populations are once again on the rise. Could the current sightings be a sign that their populations are following suit? With the major heating season just around the corner, Renfrew Hydro has been talking to its customers about the Affordability Fund and encouraging them to see if they qualify for free energy-saving products to help cut electricity costs and make homes or apartments more comfortable. Customers who use electric heat, in particular, should take advantage of this program as they may qualify for Level 3 with up to $15,000 in funding to make their homes less reliant on electricity for heating. In recent weeks, there has been confusion about what programs are still available following the Ontario Government’s announcement to scrap green energy programs funded by the Cap and Trade program. In fact, the Affordability Fund Trust (administered by Renfrew Hydro)–continues to offer free energy-saving products. It has not been affected by recent changes in government funding for energy efficiency initiatives. Renfrew Hydro’s goal is to help you unravel the misconceptions and encourage you to take the next step: find out if you are eligible! Already, Renfrew Hydro has helped more than 100 customers take advantage of free products through the Affordability Fund. This has included air to air heat pumps, energy efficient appliances, and smaller energy-saving initiatives such as free LED bulbs.

I thought the Affordability Fund was a scam because it seemed to be too good to be true. When in doubt, customers are encouraged to get in touch with Renfrew Hydro at 613.432.4884 or by email at info@renfrewhydro.com to talk about concerns and verify the authenticity of programs. When the Affordability Fund was announced, Renfrew Hydro applied for and received $500,000+ in funding to help its customers. The funding is in place, but you have to take the first step and find out if you are eligible by contacting the Affordability Fund Trust. I wasn’t eligible for other hydro assistance programs based on my income so I didn’t think the Affordability Fund applied to me. Eligible customers can qualify for up to $15,000 in products and installation. Here is an example. If your total household income is $45,334 after tax and your annual hydro bill is $2,000, you would be classified as a Level 2 beneficiary and be eligible for up to $4,500 in energy-efficient upgrades, most notably energy-efficient household appliances.
If you have not applied for assistance from the Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP) or the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP), you can apply to the Affordability Fund. The Affordability Fund is not a low income assistance program. It is a program designed to help medium income households reduce the electricity burden. If you have qualified already for LEAP, OESP, or the Home Assistance Program (HAP), you can’t qualify for the Affordability Fund. If you don’t qualify, perhaps family and friends will. Please let them know about this program.

Older readers may remember vibrant flocks of evening grosbeaks visiting bird feeders from the 1970s to the 1990s. These largebilled, yellow-and-black finches appeared in huge flocks whose arrival was announced by strident but pleasant chirps. Upon arrival they would immediately begin devouring sunflower seeds, their ability to consume vast quantities in short order giving rise to the rather unflattering moniker: "Greedies." In recent winters fewer evening grosbeaks have been visiting local birdfeeders. While their absence has undoubtedly saved feeder owners money, their brilliant colours and cheerful calls were sadly missed. However, this fall there have been numerous sightings not only locally but also through much of southeastern Ontario. Evening grosbeaks are boreal forest birds whose presence locally is made known primarily in winter. But historically, grosbeaks were not here; originally they were found in the Rocky Mountains and farther west. Then, in the mid-1800s, a large-scale movement (an irruption) occurred in eastern Canada. The influx continued and by the early 1900s, winter sightings were commonplace. Charles Macnamara recorded 31 on his 1915 Arnprior Christmas Bird Count and 60 the following year. Interestingly, Edna Ross didn't consistently record evening grosbeaks on her Pakenham Count (which started in 1925) until the 1940s. After 1970, the year the Pakenham count's name changed to the Pakenham-Arnprior Christmas Bird Count, grosbeaks began to be recorded in larger numbers. Certainly, an increase in participants and birdfeeders was partly behind this phenomenon, but the birds themselves were definitely more common. In 1971, 730 grosbeaks were recorded on the Christmas Bird Count; in 1978 that number rose to 1,269. And in 1987, the 2,047 tallied remains the record. But during the 1990s, the numbers be-

Volunteering for the Renfrew Fair is in Bob Johnston's blood. He followed in his father's footsteps, joining the fair board and taking on a variety of tasks in the past 24 years, helping the event continue to be "the greatest fair in the Ottawa Valley." Johnston's contributions were recognized when the Renfrew Agricultural Society (fair board) held its annual Appreciation Dinner Oct. 20. The former Horton mayor and current councillor received the fair's 2018 Meritorious Service Award for "outstanding and dedicated service" to the society. The prestigious award is sponsored by the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies. Johnston was introduced in a humorous dissertation by his friend, fair volunteer and fellow former teacher Bill Gagan and was presented with the award by fair board chair, Jim Enright. Calling the award "very well deserved," Enright said "if you wanted a job done, Bob was always here to get it done." Johnston then took the large crowd in the Renfrew Armouries on a trip down memory lane with several fair stories. Volunteering for the fair has been a "very interesting and rewarding experience," he said. "They have been a lot of great memories." He was first persuaded to volunteer by Horton neighbour, Doug Humphries, who felt Johnston's knowledge of agriculture and entertainment contacts (he was a longtime drummer of the Hall of Fame band, The Countrymen) would be an asset to the fair. Gagan noted Johnston would go on to chair the fair board's entertainment committee for 22 years. He also served as fair board president in 2012-13. Gagan said Johnston was behind the "very successful" Valley Stage at the fair. And when the board needed a backhoe or atractor, they would call on him. "He contributed a great deal," he said. Johnston said his fair memories stretch back to the 1940s when he accompanied his father, Andrew Johnston, a fair board member and ringmaster, to the fairgrounds "every morning" in the days up to and during many fairs. While teaching in Arnprior, he got away from the fair for a time, but in 1976 he was a member of the hockey Millionaires team that took over the gate and later did the same with the Rusty Blades. In 1992, Humphries, then fair board chair, brought Johnston on board to head up the field crops committee and help with entertainment. Johnston said he was particularly proud of his committee's work building a Valley Stage and 14 bleachers on a shoestring budget. "I had a lot of help," he said,

Dentistry @ Renfrew is a member of the Sandhu Dental Group, which has 13 clinics in eastern Ontario. Its latest clinic is located at the former Dentistry in the Valley premises in the Wilson Mall on O'Brien Road. Dr. Neeraj Bansal is the lead dentist at the Renfrew and Arnprior clinics, which he co-owns with Dr. Raja Sandhu. The company's marketing manager Brandon Potter said the dentists are continually seeking new ways to serve their patients. They provide a wide range of dental treatments in a spalike setting. If patients have had bad dental experiences, Dentistry @ Renfrew goes out of its way to make and make them feel comfortable, he said. ETMANSKIS ORGANIZE AFTERNOON OF MUSIC TO SUPPORT FOOD BANK

JOHN CARTER john.car ter@metroland.com Local residents have an opportunity on Sunday, Nov. 18 to participate in two time-honoured Renfrew traditions: a Sunday afternoon dance party and Christmas season generosity. Mary and Mike Etmanski have pulled together a number of their musical friends to hold an afternoon of socializing and toe-tapping at the Renfrew Armouries. "But most of all, it's a chance to dance," said Mary. All proceeds are going to a cause near and dear to the Etmanskis' hearts, the Renfrew and District Food Bank. The Classic Country Music Show and Dance runs from 1 to 5 p.m., with a who's who of local talent providing continuous musical entertainment. The house band will be made up of Ottawa Valley Country Music Hall of Fame members Al Brisco, Peter Dawson and Tim Hermitte, along with local favourites Jack Jones and Keith Selle. There will be a special appearance by BBC & Co, otherwise known as Bahoo, The Brat & The Commander with Jon Park-Wheeler. The band was a big hit when it played at the Country Night for Hospice at RCAF 433 Wing on Sept. 29. BBC & Co, featuring Andy Dore and his wife Lori MacKenzie, will play two 30minute sets to give the house band a

Why the food bank? The Etmanskis have great empathy for those who have to rely on the food bank, especially children. And the latest statistics show that more than 40 per cent of food bank users are children. With Renfrew having the highest rate of child poverty in the county, the need is great as the Etmanskis' good friend, Doug Brookes of the food bank, can attest. Low-income children often suffer from food insecurity, and many have never eaten fresh fruit and vegetables. So, it's no wonder the food bank is "our favourite charity," said Mary. And what better way to raise money and awareness for the food bank, than by giving people an opportunity to dance and have fun? Mary said that Sunday afternoon get-

The Etmanskis are delighted by the support that their event is receiving from the musicians and others in the community. Several sponsors and a large number of volunteers are helping with the event, and the Renfrew Agricultural Society is providing the venue for free, said Mary. "They've all been so generous; it's not been a huge battle to get everyone on board," she said. "But that's no surprise. Renfrew has always been a caring community." Tickets cost $15 and are available at Aikenhead's Drugstore, the door or by calling the Etmanskis at 613-433-2508. Funds will also be raised with a 50/50 draw and donation jar. Getting a substantial cash donation is especially important for the food bank this time of year, as it gives it the ability to buy food that hasn't been donated. "They know best what they need," noted Mary. "So come out for a great cause," she concluded. "We're promising people a good time."

That's because all parts of Renfrew County will benefit from the seventh annual Festival of Trees Snowflake Gala in Petawawa Saturday, Nov. 17. Renfrew County Child Poverty Action Network (CPAN) executive director Lyn Smith points out the "unique and magical event" raises funds for works throughout the county. "One hundred per cent of all proceeds come to CPAN, helping children throughout Renfrew County." The public is invited to the Petawawa Civic Centre between 6 p.m. and 1 a.m. to admire the beautifully decorated trees and wreaths sponsored by generous lo-
cal businesses, enjoy great food and entertainment such as the woodwind quartet Zephyr and the band Reckless, and bid on a variety of items in live and silent auctions. Smith said it's not too late to sponsor the event or provide auction donations. Last year, the Festival of Trees raised $41,800 for CPAN, "and we're trying to surpass that this year," she said. Tickets are available individually ($60) and for tables of six ($330) or 12 ($600). Like thunder, we could hear heavy footsteps on the wood platform outside the door of the Northcote School. We heard boots being pounded against the door frame, shaking off the freshly fallen snow, and without a rap, the door swung wide and in walked a total stranger dressed like a member of Parliament. He nodded at Miss Crosby who had stood up so quickly, her chair tumbled to the floor behind her, and I could see a look of panic come over her face as she shifted papers on an already spic-and-span desk. Here was the newly appointed inspector, a figure to be reckoned with for sure! We didn't have to be told to stand; that was automatic whenever anyone came through the door of the school. We could tell from the look on Miss Crosby's face this gentleman had tremendous power in his hands. He was there to see that the Northcote School was run properly, and according to the standards set out by the board, the pupils were being taught in the basics and beyond, and we were respectful and obedient. I said a silent prayer that my brother Emerson and Cecil would be on their best behaviour. He pounded up to Miss Crosby's desk, nodded at us standing like stone pillars, and in a voice that could be heard in Arnprior, Ont., ordered us to take our seats. As we always did when seated in front of a visitor, our hands were clasped in front of us on our desks, and our feet planted firmly on the floor. Miss Crosby's eyes darted over
us to make sure we were all doing what was expected of us. Then, the new inspector came down from the front of the classroom and went right to Joyce's desk and asked her to open her drawer. I could see Miss Crosby breathe a sigh of relief that Joyce had been picked, because she was just about the neatest person in the whole Northcote School. He asked her to take out a couple of her scribblers which he flipped through and handed them back to her. Then, he walked over to the window where the Senior Fourths sat and stopped in front of Iva's desk and asked her the same thing as he had asked Joyce. Again, he flipped through the scribblers and handed them back to her. All this time, Miss Cros-
by was standing rigid in front of her desk. The man walked over to her and asked to see the book which recorded our attendance very day. He spent many minutes leafing through it. We of course were scarcely breathing, and my need to go to the privy was now causing me great concern. I looked over at Cecil. I prayed he wouldn't do anything foolish. But he was moving his ears up and down, a feat he was able to do with ease and which drove Miss Crosby to distraction. He was a sly one all right and was smart enough to wiggle his ears when the inspector or Miss Crosby weren't looking. Finally, it seemed the Inspector was finished. He nodded to Miss Crosby, and headed for the door, leaving behind melted snow wherever he had walked. If that had been one of us, Miss Crosby would have had us clean up the mess immediately. She righted her chair,
fell into it, and said we could all go out to recess even though we had scarcely done a whit of school work. She looked like she had done a hard day's work. We had often heard how the inspector was to be feared by the teacher. For the life of me, I couldn't think of one thing he could find wrong with Miss Crosby. I loved her dearly. But her destiny was in his hands and it was said a word from him, and a teacher could lose her job. Her yearly salary of a few hundred dollars would be gone forever! BETWEEN THE SHEETS: SCOTTISH CURLERS VISIT RENFREW CLUB ANDY SKLEPOWICZ AND MARG DAWSON "The Scots are coming, the Scots are coming" was the cry heard at the Renfrew curling club as a contingent of Scottish curlers descended upon our local area. Joining us for coffee and snacks and then curling followed by a great lunch. Four Renfrew teams faced the four Scottish teams that
hailed mainly from our namesake Renfrewshire. And some of the curlers were even from the town of Renfrew, in Scotland. And in true friendly fashion four very close games ended up two apiece with most of the matches going down to last rock. A huge thanks to Gert Brydges and a host of volunteers that made our visitors feel very welcome before they headed off for Arn-
prior and another battle in the afternoon. The competitive ladies are finally back in action as the Autumn leaves held its first interclub games in Arnprior. rived. In the afternoon the team of Yvonne Sklepowicz, Shelley Jamieson, Marg Dawson and Sharron Pearce rode a big five ender to defeat the other Killaloe team quite comfortably. The other Renfrew team, featuring Barb Westgarth, Laurie Millar, with Marg Dawson in the morning and Joan Hickey in the afternoon, and Theresa Mann split their two games losing to the home side in the morning and then defeating Pembroke in the afternoon. Teams enjoyed a beautiful day and a great game of golf at the Renfrew Golf Club. Everyone celebrated the hot weather and the importance of being part of such a valuable charitable tournament. The money raised each year at the Laurel Rafuse Memorial Golf Tournament enables children and youth with developmental disabili-
ties to have the opportunity to experience a fun, safe and successful summer camp and a March break camp experience. These programs would not exist for these children and their families without the generous support of everyone associated with this tournament. May 15, 1939 - October 20, 2018 Born in Val Dor Quebec. Formerly of Arnprior Ontario, he died in Calgary Alberta at the age of 79. John was the son of Mary and John Sutherland McKay Sr., both deceased. He was brother to Saundra Glynn late Paul, Sheilagh Poole late Phil, Peter & Pat McKay, Jana & James Croskery all of Arnprior and George and Heather McKay of Surrey B.C. He will be missed by his siblings and many nieces and nephews. John worked in the family business Dochart Brick and Tile Co. Ltd. for many years. His most memorable time in Arnprior was the years he was involved with the Drum Corps. Then John went West to realize a dream. Burial of the cremated remains will be at St. Stephen’s Cemetery at Old Chelsea Quebec where his parents are buried. This will take place in the spring.

Ron loved the thrill of going fast, whether it was boating, ski-dooing or flying. He also enjoyed camping, hunting and learning about history, and he was an amazing cook. Ron will be remembered for his unique humor, which he developed while growing up in the Ottawa Valley. He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him. Summary: Under the direction of the Chief Operating Engineer or their designate, the 3rd Class Operating Engineer will be responsible for providing flexibility within the team and the mill by learning other operating roles. The 3rd Class Operating Engineer will also be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the natural gas, sander dust burner, hog fuel fired thermal oil heaters, highpressure (150 psi) steam boilers, boiler feed water, central stack emission monitoring and thermal oil heating systems and other associated equipment as the shift operating engineer. All mandatory duties will be performed in accordance with TSSA rules and regulations. END OF LOCHIEL STREET AT O'GORMAN AVENUE IN RENFREW Until the O'Gorman sanitary storm drainage system can be enlarged this fall, the town is using pumps on machinery hill to divert the overflow during wet periods to prevent more damaging backups into nearby basements. Residents complained after a mixture of run-off and sewer water backed up into at least seven basements in the Bank, Queen, Lisgar and O'Gorman area several times during heavy rain storms in the last four years. That prompted the Town of Renfrew to move forward an upgrade of the storm drainage system to this fall.
JUST THE FACTS: In a report to council Oct. 30, development and works director Mike Asselin explained the work had originally been planned for 2019, but the town asked contractor BEI to do it this fall "in order to correct the flooding issues." The "numerous flooding" in recent years, including

As of Oct. 30, the O'Gorman Avenue water and sewer works were 25 per cent complete, Asselin told council, cautioning that additional funding may be required to complete the project. However, it will be "installed and functioning this year" to be able to handle the spring run-off, he said. There will be some landscaping done to finalize the project next spring.

The Renfrew Golden Age Activity Centre was imbued by the Christmas spirit early as it hosted its third annual Christmas Shopping Adventure Oct. 26. The fundraiser featured 55 vendors with 67 tables offering a variety of Christmas gifts and other festive items at the RCAF Wing. "It helps us; it helps them (vendors)," said the centre's administrator, Fay O'Reilly. The evening of Christmas shopping also featured door prizes, a silent auction, 50/50 draw and a popular penny raffle for gifts donated by each participant.
