HERITAGE

Museum visit will be music to your ears Whether you are into jazz, ragtime or even highland bag-piping we will surely have a piece of Renfrew’s musical history that interests you. We have several articles commemorating former musical groups of The Ottawa Valley. Come and check out uniforms worn by Renfrew’s own Citizen’s Band, which existed in the early 1900s, and browse through our collection of black and white photos we have on display of the local group. We also have a great display on the history of Renfrew’s Pipe Band. Through old newspaper articles and corresponding artifacts you can learn the history of the band from their formation in 1913 through to their involvement as regimental pipe bands in the first and second World Wars. The Ottawa Valley’s

famous Bijou Orchestre, which played fox trots and waltzes as far north as Timmins and as far east as Kemptville, in the Roaring Twenties, is also part of our music display. For those wishing to get up close and personal with some musical instruments of bygone days, we have an extensive collection. We have several types of gramophones from the early 1900s, one of which will still play a tune. There is an autoharp from the 1920s, an ornate bell organ from 1917, a brass trombone, a large bass drum from the Orange Lodge in Vernon Ontario and an abundance of old

piano sheet music with a Doherty Organ from the early 1900s. We also have an old cousin of the accordion and harmonica in our collection; a Concertina. One of the museum’s most popular attractions can also be found in our music display, our player piano! This interesting piece of Renfrew history was donated by Hans Rissi, former owner of The Rocky Mountain House. Since its arrival, patrons of all ages have been delighted to take a turn pumping the foot pedals to make the piano’s music play. Here at the museum we have boxes of different song scrolls you can listen to on the player piano. The staff at the McDougall Mill museum invites you to fill the month with music by stopping by and checking out our music display. There is something for everyone.

Olga Lewis’s From the Old Files returns next week.

Now Accepting New Patients DENTAL IMPLANTS Many patients are concerned that any tooth replacements may not look, feel or function like the originals. With dental implants, however, there is no need for concern because, dental implants actually replace not only the missing tooth or teeth, but the roots too, for complete stability and a natural look and feel. If you’re missing more than one tooth, ask how implants can function as anchors to secure and stabilize bridges and dentures.
