Highly polished coin dies The perfect coin thanks to mirror finish Who doesn’t know the coin: the mostly round and legal tender and thus, next to the banknote, the type of cash. Although the noble coin is disappearing more and more as a means of payment, the demand for collector coins as an investment is by no means diminishing. In a figurative sense, the term “coin” also stands for a mint. But how exactly are the gold and silver thalers created in the first place and where may Gerber be involved? Money in the form of coins was the only cash for a long time, until the first paper money appeared in the 11th century. The word coin is called “Moneta” in Latin, which you have certainly already come across as a term in the German language.

Even though we all hold coins in our hands as a means of payment, few of us have ever thought about how they are made. But starting from the beginning. Coins are almost always made of a metal alloy and unembossed coin blanks are referred to in coinage jargon as “planchets”, plates.

Today, coins are produced by minting: a mechanical forming process in which the coins or medals are brought into an officially defined, legally-binding and value-establishing shape by means of pressure though embossing. Minting machines take on this task and produce several thousand pieces per minute. Nothing beats a perfect die, machined by Gerber, which gives the coin a clean motif and lettering. Coins are produced in a mint or minting facility that mints circulation and commemorative coins for a country or institution.
