Grand Rapids African American Health Institute – Heart Your Kidney Campaign Overview: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a condition that receives little attention in the African American community. Due to high rates of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease, African Americans have an increased risk of developing kidney failure and requiring dialysis treatments or a kidney transplant to sustain life. It is imperative that through the Kidney Disease Awareness campaign, African Americans are made aware of the existing risk factors and understand the importance of visiting a doctor or clinic regularly to check blood sugar, blood pressure, urine protein and kidney function. The campaign’s purpose is to increase awareness surrounding kidney disease as well as providing education on prevention.
