I use the word “currently” advisedly for I fear there are those who will not let up until the sale of alcohol is banned here entirely. And, if they get their way, get ready for the biggest exodus out of Thailand by foreigners ever seen. Come to think of it I reckon more than a few Thais would be wrestling to get to the front of the queues for plane tickets. Could things really go that far? Or am I just acting like an old curmudgeon for effect? Well I would own up to being a naturally surly person and would like the “you are being alarmist” accusation to be well founded because I hope that matters really do not progress along these lines.

However, the other day I was speaking to a friend who owns an enclosed bar that you can’t see in without entering and he was saying that soon he might have to take down all posters from the interior walls that depict what he sells – alcohol! But I do want to encourage the powers that be not to go too far down the path to banning alcohol. A little less that a century ago they tried it in America. It succeeded to some extent in reducing alcoholism but also lead to an unacceptable rise in criminal activity that eventually contributed to the downfall of Prohibition. Another contributory factor was the fact that those in power missed the taxes generated by alcohol sales. And maybe they just missed having a beer!

Government won’t act on the baht Côte d’Azur granted EIA The strength of the Thai baht is affecting many aspects of the economy – and not all of it is positive! Expats who retired to Thailand from just about everywhere are finding that their money is not buying what it used to. And, of course, those thinking about buying a property here are having to find more to purchase their “dream home”. The strong baht is also having an adverse impact on exports with Thai goods struggling to compete with those from other countries.

However, despite calls from organisations such as the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) for the government to intercede and help weaken the currency, it appears unlikely they will act saying only that they “hope” to see a weaker baht, according to a Reuters report. The baht has risen by 1.6 per cent against the US dollar so far this year. “A slightly weaker baht will be good but it will depend on the central bank,” said deputy prime minister Pridiyathorn Devakula.

The latest project from the Universal Group – Seven Seas Côte d’Azur – has passed its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The project, whose showroom opening we covered last month, comprises seven buildings in total and will provide 1,308 units. Prices start at B1.199m for a 24sqm studio. Also included will be 37 shop units in an area where few shops exist at present. Building is expected to start early next year.

Organisers of Asia’s largest multiclass regatta – Top of the Gulf Regatta Presented by Ocean Marina – held April 30 to May 4 are expecting another successful event and a multi-million baht boost to Greater Pattaya’s tourism earnings as more than 700 sailors and friends descend on Jomtien to take part in the awardwinning event. The regatta, held at Ocean Marina Yacht Club, Jomtien, generates more than Bt40m for the local economy over the four days, and surveys show that sailors return to the country multiple times each year. “Sports tourism is an area in which we see a lot of growth potential for the country,” said Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports Mrs Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul. “Marine events attract high-spending tourists, many of whom are repeat tourists. Ideal destination “The Gulf of Thailand’s spectacular coastline makes it an ideal destination for water sports and marine leisure tourism. Ocean Marina Yacht Club, home of the regatta since its inception, is the perfect host for a large regatta like Top of the Gulf. It is the largest marina in South East Asia and it provides safe berthing with international-standard facilities inwater and onshore is a big attraction for regatta participants.”

he Orient’s combination of name, design, large spa and prices are proving to be a winner with the buying public – even at a time when the market overall is experiencing difficulties. “We are pleased with the progress we have made since the project was launched,” said a spokesman from Matrix who are developing The Orient in partnership with another of Pattaya’s big players – Nova Group. “We have sold a third of the 526 units which in the current market is good progress, we feel,” he added. Absolute redefine their focus Sea Pearl Beach Resort no longer under group management Absolute World Group – the awardwinning mixed-use resort developers and fractional and vacation ownership pioneers – are developing and refining their Phuket operations with the aim to deliver the best possible experience to owners, members and guests across the Group’s collection of resorts on the Island. American journalist and property investor Bart Walters lived in Thailand for more than 13 years, first in Bangkok, then in Phuket and Pattaya then back to Bangkok before rediscovering Pattaya again. He is back in the States now but we asked him for an American perspective on what is happening in Thailand. Do Americans outside of Washington, DC much care? ven after spending an extended period outside Thailand and inside the United States, I still find myself obsessing over the happenings back in the Land of Smiles. I read Bangkok Post online, peruse whatever Thai Visa stories that peak my interest and scour world affairs magazines and websites for insights into “what’s happening now” back in my home of 14 years. Most days I feel like the only guy in America that gives a rat’s rear end what happens in Thailand. If the truth be told, most Americans don’t know Thailand from Taiwan. Unless there are dead bodies to count or wild-eyed pistol waivers to capture on video, Americans just don’t see any news about this region. Between airliners falling out of the sky and those darn Kardashian sisters, who has time for 70 million people living half a globe away in a big rice paddy? They don’t even speak English do they? Don’t be confused But, one should not confuse the American public with the American government. Earlier this year, the

US diplomatic corps ratcheted up the rhetoric and expressed in no uncertain terms its displeasure with the ruling military junta. Reluctance to relinquish power and vague promises about elections had the boys in the stars-n-bars banging on the democracy drum and pointing the finger of shame. The US cut off military aid to Thailand; a startling sum of cash, equipment and training. The Americans stalled around about appointing a new ambassador after the retirement of the previous one. Diplomats on the ground in Thailand voiced the official US opinion which enraged the powersthat-be. How dare the US interfere in Thai affairs?! But, even when called on the carpet to explain or apologise, the Americans simply restated their position. They aren’t happy about an elected prime minister getting run out of town. They weren’t happy about martial law. They aren’t happy about the lack of a plan to return to democratic rule. Now there’s talk of a round of economic sanctions to get Thailand’s attention.

Matters came to a head when this year’s “Cobra Gold” joint US/ Thai/Everybody-in-Asia military exercise started to ramp up. Rather than cancel the exercise, the US watered the whole thing down, sending nearly a third fewer troops and focusing on “humanitarian and disaster relief” initiatives. Enter the dragon A joint US/Thai press conference regarding Cobra Gold was abruptly cancelled by the Americans. Minutes after this cancellation Thailand announced that China would participate in the joint military exercise for the first time. Not long after, China’s Defence Minister Chang Wanquan and Thailand agreed to boost military ties over the next five years. The agreement includes, among other things, intelligence sharing, co-operation on transnational

crime, and increased joint military exercises. China had been hanging around and courting Thailand long before the coup, but these kinds of strategic moves state quite clearly where we are now. China will pick up for any slack in economic or military support Thailand needs. China wants to be the new sugar-daddy. A writer for Interpreter Magazine characterised the relationship in the title of an article, “A Pawn is Moved”. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say “a pawn is taken”. Still, I’m the only guy on my block that has any idea Thailand is run by a military junta. Most Americans don’t even know what a coup is. “I thought they had a king,” my brother offered. “I hear it rains a lot,” said my neighbour. “Big deal” … “So what?” are the responses I get from fellow Americans. They simply have no idea why losing Thailand as

a member of the democracy club is important. America-World What’s more, they probably aren’t going to care. Most Americans live in “America-world” which starts in New York and ends in California. The spectre of China scares no one on mainland America. The creeping influence of the Chinese empire goes unseen by the average US citizen. Most Americans assume Thailand is kind of owned by China anyway. But, all is not lost for the ignorant American. An event on the horizon may drag the political drama in Thailand back onto the front page of US newspapers. In 2016 the US holds a presidential election. Hillary Clinton is the slam-dunk shoe-in for the Democratic nomination. She will want to stand on her merit and achievements while Secretary of State. She will be judged, however

unfairly, by the success or failure of the Obama administration. Ms Clinton will no doubt be showcasing pictures with Aun San Su Kyii and claiming some measure of credit for newly democratic Myanmar. Republicans will be talking about the mess in Thailand and asking “what happened to the pivot towards Asia Ms Clinton?” “How did we lose an ally we’ve had for 178 years?” Most Americans couldn’t show you Myanmar or Thailand on a globe … but they’ll come out for a good mud-slinging. Once all the players are set and the strategy starts flying, I think we Americans can expect a CNN special or perhaps a 60 Minutes segment dedicated to the lingering authoritarian regime in Thailand. And, we can expect someone in America to blame someone else in America for letting it happen. Ignorance is bliss. Bart Walters

hile some developers in Thailand are bemoaning the lack of Russian buyers, property on the island of Koh Chang has not been so affected and is still selling well – that’s according to the folk at Siam Royal View who have a major project on the country’s second largest island. Although martial law has affected overseas visitors to the country as a whole, tourist arrivals on Koh Chang have remained positive, and 2015 bookings are up on the previous year. According to Roland Steiner, chief executive at Siam Royal View: “Investors are still able to buy well below prices in other island/ beach destinations, almost 60 per cent lower than, say, Phuket. Also due to the fact that 80 per cent of the island is protected by National

Park, there is limited land available to developers, and therefore prices will automatically rise in the future, making it an excellent place to buy real estate. “The rental market is also buoyant with several overseas operators running tours and many Thais also like to spend a few days here throughout the year. Several leading hotel chains have now opened including Centara, Mercure and shortly Marriot as well.” Close to ferries The Siam Royal View Residential Resort is located on a 300-rai site at Klong Son Bay in the north of the island close to the ferries. One of the island’s largest property developments, it was launched back in 2006 and is valued at Bt3.5bn. The infrastructure is complete,

and the estate includes a nine-hole golf course, a 75-berth yacht marina and 270 individual land plots. Some 120 villas have already been sold, mainly to Europeans especially Swedish, German, Swiss and British buyers. Thais are also starting to realise the excellent value offered plus the proximity to Bangkok, which is just four hours’ drive away. Owners with furnished property are enjoying high yields of between 10-12 per cent a year. Villas can be rented at Bt60,000-100,000 a week during high season, or Bt35,00050,000 in the low season, dependent on size and facilities of the villa. Siam Royal View have plans to build five new low-rise condominiums with 100 units in total sized from 60120sqm and to be priced at Bt90,000 per sqm. They are also planning to build a 70-room boutique hotel costing Bt350m along with a highspeed boat port on the mainland to ferry guests over to a private jetty. t is a darn sight easier to describe the quality of the food at Suggestions Cosy Restaurant than it is to tell you how to get there. But I’ll give it a whirl. Near the top of Soi Nern Plub Wan travelling away from Sukhumvit there is a small gas station on the left followed by a staggered crossroads; turn right there and a few clicks further along on your right you will see the bright orange-painted restaurant. Google lists the road as Thung Kom Tan Man 9. Never heard that name before? Me neither. Even on their business card Suggestions say they are in Soi Nern Plub Wan when really they are in a turning off it. Follow my instructions and you should find it. It’s worth the effort. It’s difficult to pigeon-hole the cuisine at Suggestions but it’s perhaps best summed up as fine dining at affordable prices. Nice touches I had eaten there previously but had forgotten some of the nice touches that help Suggestions to stand out from the crowd. For example, I received a complimentary pâté with toast as a form of amuse-bouche ... only this portion was big! Amuse-bouche is meant to be a bite-sized appetizer. This way exceeds that. When I saw it I thought they had got my appetizer order mixed up because it looked like a full portion and was about to draw it to the waitress’s attention until I remembered I had received something similar on my previous visit. Had my memory served me better I might have refrained from ordering a starter of Bruscetta with Feta Cheese which arrived looking so neat it almost seemed a shame to disturb the display. It was excellent but,

given it arrived hot on the heels of the pâté with toast, I was worried I might not have enough room for the main course – one of my favourites, lamb shank (not illustrated). The shank was served on a very large square plate but there was not a lot of white to be seen as the meat, mashed potatoes, vegetables and a giant portion of salad covered most of it. I told myself that I needed to concentrate on getting through all the meat and the veg and salad would have to take a backseat. As it was I happily got through the meat and vegetables but left most of the salad. Nothing wrong with it I would stress, it’s just that I had eaten too much lovely bread at the start. So don’t tell my doctor that I ate all the bread and potatoes and left the salad as he would think I’m not taking the idea of losing weight seriously. I washed it all down with a Duvel Belgian beer which I tend to drink whenever I see it available. No room for one of the great sounding desserts but I will make up for that next time by changing my starting line-up! Suggestions is open six days a week from Tuesday to Sunday starting at 11am. Should a 17-year-old be allowed to compete in F1?

his subject came up this year where young Max Verstappen is driving in the F1 circus. Should we let drivers as young as this drive in the pinnacle of motor sport categories? Before looking at the general situation, let’s look at the specifics of the Verstappen case. Even those with only a mild interest in racing will know that Max Verstappen’s father Jos was an F1 driver. Verstappen Senior participated in 107 Grands Prix. He achieved two podium places, and scored a total of 17 championship points which makes him the best performing Dutch race driver in Formula One to date. His highest qualifying position was 6th, at the 1994 Belgian Grand Prix. Looking at the young driver’s history, it soon becomes apparent that motor racing is in his DNA from both sides of his family. Mother a karter In addition to F1 driver dad Jos his mother Sophie Kumpen was a successful kart driver. She won two Belgian championships and in 1995 the prestigious Trofeo Margutti in Lonato, Italy, competing against top drivers such as F1’s Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fisichella. His maternal grandfather, Robert Kumpen, did some international endurance karting. Robert’s brother Paul Kumpen, is a former rallycross and GT endurance driver. Paul’s son Anthony (Sophie’s cousin) is known as the most successful driver at Zolder. I think one would have to say that racing is in Max’s family’s DNA from both sides. Now when you watch this young man, in his first year of F1, he makes some very mature judgments, resulting

in spectacular overtaking. This usually comes only after years of experience, not often seen in a 17 year old. However, how long has he been racing? It turns out that Max Verstappen began racing go-karts when he was four years old, and has had 11 full seasons of karting, then into F3 and now F1. The way he is on the circuit today is the result of 13 years’ “apprenticeship”. He is no “Johnny Come Lately”. So he has the history and the DNA, what can go wrong? Unfortunately, at 17 there is not a wealth of ‘maturity’ and at that age, on a world stage, it is easy for things to go to his, not yet mature, brain. Unless his family knows how to assist him through this difficult period in his life, he can easily become a psychological invalid. Money, travel and fame will produce the desire to “show them” just what he can do. And that can be at the expense of his talent in driving a race car. The governing body of world motor sport, the Federation International de l’ Automobile (FIA) has decided that 17 is too young, as although he was granted a licence this year, from now on the FIA have imposed an age cut-off of 18. Max Verstappen found the right place at the right time. Let’s hope he can continue. |

Is stupid ‘label’ deserved?

I

love Thailand and have been lucky enough to call it home for the best part of seven years now. For the most part I have always been made to feel very welcome and for this I am very grateful. I have had the odd complaint that ‘things aren’t like that in England’ which has usually been met by the response ‘if you don’t like it, go home then!’ and, to be fair, I consider this response to be very reasonable. Over the years I have heard many say the Thais are ‘racist’ but I don’t find this to be the case – nationalistic “yes”, but racist “no”.

Always shown as stupid My only complaint is the way that ‘farangs’ are portrayed in Thai soaps. They are always shown as being stupid and needing a good Thai to show them how the world really works. Recently a colleague got me interested in a BBC Three TV show

that was filmed at Suvarnabhumi called simply Bangkok Airport – I am sure many of you will be familiar with it. Sadly, after I had watched a couple of episodes I started to wonder if the image that is portrayed in the soaps is actually quite accurate. Unfortunately I am sometimes embarrassed to admit this, but all too often in the bars around Pattaya the problems tend to stem from Brits or other non-locals going over the top. Songkran was a prime example of Brits behaving badly (along with a few other nationalities) and taking the throwing of water to the extreme. Anyway, back to the BBC documentary. Given it is intended for a mainly British audience the documentary does tend to focus more on the British but it does include other nationalities and as a member of the tourist police said ‘they are just young people who are not used to visiting another country’.

The first example of people causing problems was two English guys who had been robbed in Koh Samui. They were looking to get a flight back to the UK a week earlier than planned and were looking for the tourist police at the airport to assist. Keen to get rid Harry and Cosmos (no idea if this was his real name!) were hoping that the police would double up as travel agents. As the documentary pointed out, the tourist police seemed as keen to get rid of them as they were to leave! After several complaints about people not being very helpful – bearing in mind that everyone was bending over backwards to get rid… sorry, help them, they got a flight. Cosmos disappeared to get the money to pay but in the meantime his mate found a cheaper flight! Harry then went to look for Cosmos using their ‘secret whistle’ to gain

The thought of ‘going on a bender’ in Bangkok conjures up a whole host of thoughts but in this case it appeared to be simply beer that resulted in one of the lads getting separated from the group in something reminiscent of Hangover 2! The remaining three, with the aid of their parents, managed to book flights home although Will (the one who got separated) was too late to get on the same flight. Abandoned by friends After being to all intents and purposes abandoned by his friends Will managed to get another flight but not until 24 hours later. The meant that he had another night in Bangkok and decided to head to Khao San Road – for the second night running. After several beers he decided

that what was actually required was (the anti-anxiety drug) Xanax so went about buying some. The recommended dose is two tablets but the ever-responsible Will decided that six would be a far better option! Amazingly, he managed to surface the next morning and get himself to the airport where most of the airport staff seemed to remember him! Having checked in he decided to hit the various shops in the departures lounge in what appeared to be an attempt to miss a second flight! With just minutes to spare he managed to board the plane, again making you wondered if the Thais have got we foreigners figured out correctly! Now we are all aware that Thailand is known as the Land of Smiles and I think that most of us have probably questioned this title on more than one occasion but maybe the show highlighted why the Thais are always smiling. The annual customer service awards for Suvarnabhumi Airport were being held at the time with everyone making that extra special effort to be nice and smile. We saw the leading candidates, the aptly named Beam who worked at check in, a nurse whose name escaped me and a rather camp VAT refunds assistant called Bay who appeared to feel the need to go very

over the top in his attempts to be nice and smile – especially as he appeared to be wearing lipstick. There was, of course, a cash prize and the bragging rights which would certainly assist the smile! Beam and the nurse in particular did appear to come across quite well although it was little surprise to me that our dear friend Bay won. More contact with idiots I don’t particularly have a problem with this but the other two do come in to more contact with what would be best described as idiots and still manage to raise a smile. Bay on the other hand gets the task of giving passengers money that they might not have expected and the opportunity to compliment Argentinian ladies on their handbags. I would suggest that the stress in this role is far less than the others are subjected to. Perhaps if he were to face the likes of Harry, Cosmos and Will on a daily basis he might find his role a little harder! As always space is running short. I think we have all come across people who are similar to those who featured in the show but luckily the majority of people are perfectly reasonable. ANZAC ceremonies were due to be held while we were printing this so we hope they passed without incident and that, as Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott urged, folk turned out in very large numbers in defiance of the terrorist plot uncovered in Melbourne.

Lest We Forget: Gallipoli

n 25 April Australians commemorated the landing at Gallipoli, the ultimately illfated campaign of the World War I designed to force the Dardanelles, take Constantinople (now Istanbul) and topple the Ottoman Empire (now Turkey). Around the nation, from the major cities and towns to the smallest hamlets, religious services, marches of returned veterans and speeches were due to take place to mark Anzac Day while the Gallipoli peninsula itself hosted a huge commemorative service. It is 100 years since that fateful day when the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) stormed the craggy beaches of the Gallipoli Peninsula. The narrow isthmus, heavily defended by the Turks, was their battlefield (and graveyard) for the next eight months. In one grand charge alone, at a place called Lone Pine, soldiers of

the New South Wales 1st Infantry Brigade won seven Victoria Crosses (the top medal for valour). A day later the foolishly brave men of the Australian Light Horse were cut to ribbons by Turkish machine guns at a place appropriately named The Nek. The slaughter took less than three minutes and the bodies were not buried until 1919. By then their bones had bleached the ground. The losses The Australians lost 8,709 killed in the Gallipoli campaign; the New Zealanders suffered 2,701 dead out of the 8,556 men who served. Compared to an average campaign on the Western Front, the figures are almost paltry. Tell that to the families of the men who were killed. One of the main proponents and architects of the Gallipoli campaign was the-then 41-year-old First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill. A hero to many in Britain, Churchill is held in much lower regard in

Australia, and it’s mainly to do with the failed Gallipoli adventure. Churchill’s stocks were further lowered over his ultimately failed attempt in 1942 to divert Australian troops returning to defend their homeland to Burma. But that’s another story. While the Gallipoli failure became just another footnote in the quagmire of World War I, 25 April 1915 came to symbolise the spirit of the nation. It was Australia’s coming of age and for many resonates more loudly than Australia Day, 26 January. Australians often forget Gallipoli also featured the British and the French. Both suffered heavy casualties. The French don’t have an exact number; a Gallic wave of the red pen puts the official count at 10,000 dead. The British are more precise, losing 21,255. Of the 52,230 British soldiers who were wounded, among them was Earl Thomas Powers, my maternal grandfather.


The ‘Last Post’ Apart from his brief and painful trip to Turkey, Earl Powers lived out his life in Burnley, a Lancashire mill town. Every Armistice Day for more than half a century he would play the ‘Last Post’ on a trumpet at the Cenotaph in Towneley Hall, Burnley’s grand mediaeval tourist attraction. After Gallipoli, the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) – the only

completely volunteer army serving on the Western Front in 1918 – entered the new slaughterhouse. They fought and died in battles such as the Somme, Pozieres, Bapaume, Arras, Bullecourt, Messines, Ypres, Hamel, the Marne, Amiens, Passchendaele and many others. More than 46,000 died in France; in excess of 11,000 have no known grave. It’s hard to imagine almost a quarter have never been identified. That’s what happens when you mix artillery shells with Flanders mud. All told, the Australian nation lost 60,284 men killed and 153,000 wounded. This out of the 331,781 who went overseas on active service. It was a terrible toll. Australia gained northern New Guinea and the islands of the Bismarck Archipelago for its trouble. Australia may have become a nation in 1901, yet its sense of unity and purpose was not forged until the Homeric tragedy of the Dardanelles some 14 years later. |

He didn’t make it past the first day. Wounded in the leg, he fell back over a ledge and was fortunate to be snagged by a tree. While the sounds of war raged around him and the smell of cordite singed his nostrils he waited 24 hours before being rescued and brought to an aid station. By then the wound had festered and gangrene was starting to set in. The medics patched him up, but his leg would never completely heal and he lived with a permanent sore for the remainder of what turned out to be a long life.

Green Field Villas – new variations on a successful formula

T

overs & Shakers switched to a new Pattaya venue late in March when the event’s organisers chose to meet at the then recently opened Fflic Cliff and Pool Club facing the sea on Cosy Beach at Pratumnak. Usually M&S events in the city are held on a Friday but this time it was moved to a Saturday evening. Fflic is a chic outdoor venue and an hour before the event was due to take place clouds overhead look like threatening to wash out the meeting. “Fortunately the clouds blew over and we were able to enjoy a great evening,” said M&S guru Cees Cuijpers, head of Town & Country real estate brokers, who conceded that in the past he had been reluctant to use outdoor venues because of weather and heat considerations.

any people ask me just what do I do in the hospital? Well, my official title is “consultant”, and that is actually good news for you – the patient. This means you have someone at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya that you can ask questions of, and whose native language is English. As part of my duties I get a printout of the number of international in-patients in the hospital each day. There are some very interesting statistics from these print-outs. On the day I was writing this there were patients from Iceland, Israel, Kazakhstan, Uganda, Myanmar, Azerbaijan and Czechoslovakia. That is in addition to our usual group of Swedes, Dutch, Germans, Norwegians, French, Swiss, Australians, Russians, Canadians, Finns, Austrians, Belgians, Danes, Chinese, Americans, Irish, British, Italians, Kuwaitis, Filipinos, Koreans, Armenians and Japanese.

Don’t be afraid to say: “I’m sorry, doctor, but I don’t understand.”

Don’t bother counting, I’ve done it for you – 30 different nationalities! Thailand likes to consider itself the “hub” of just about everything, so perhaps we should add “Thailand, The Hub of International Patients!” Of course, ‘internationality’ does have its own string of attendant problems, not the least of which is ... communication. In the practice of medicine the need for communication goes both ways – the patient needs the doctor to understand what is being imparted to him/her, and the doctor needs to know that the patient has understood the diagnosis and its treatment. Big ask When both the patient and the doctor are having to communicate with each other in a ‘foreign’ language, that’s a pretty big ask! You can see now just how easy it is for communication breakdowns. Unfortunately, that lack of mutual

understanding can still occur when patient and doctor both speak the same native language! The biggest complaint by patients in Australia, for example, is that after their consultation the Australian patient leaves the clinic with no understanding of what the Australian doctor was actually talking about. So what can you do, as the medical consumer? First, don’t be afraid to say, “I’m sorry, doctor, but I don’t understand.” Second, if the lack of communication seems to be a language problem, don’t be afraid to ask for a co-ordinator from the International Service department who speaks your language to assist you (mind you, we could have a little problem with the Gouindougouba dialect from Burkina Faso)! Having been a doctor for more than 40 years, I’m always happy to help if I can (but remember I can only speak English and Australian).|
