working life needs to go on and I have too many clients in the main part of Pattaya to make such a vow feasible. But I do have considerable sympathy with her feelings. The other day we were travelling back from Central Festival to our home off Siam Country Club Road and when we tried to turn right into Country Club we saw several nice red and white striped concrete blocks barring our way. This is not totally new. Often at festivals such as Songkran this turn is blocked off. But now I am wondering how long will these obstructions be there? Usually they comprise just metal mesh barriers that are comparatively easy to lift and move ... but these look pretty permanent. Could it be that they will be there for the whole projected

three years that the tunnel is expected to take to build? Oh, I do hope not. Indeed, am I being overly optimistic is quoting three years as the build period? It’s easy to be cynical about such matters. In the expat population criticising the efforts of our hosts seems an easy bandwagon to leap on. I don’t especially wish to do this in relation to the tunnel as I feel that

the intention to improve traffic in the city is an honourable one and those

bigger than the ones blocking the turn into Siam Country Club Road. This city has been thrown up in double quick time and, on occasion, the interests of individuals or companies have been allowed to take priority over traffic they can handle. This is part of the reason why the roads are a nightmare – particularly when the rain lashes down. Speaking of the rain, and the resultant flooding, the most common question I hear raised lately is that of: Will the tunnel cope with the water? I think it is reasonable to suggest that traffic queues will form in the tunnel when the volume of traffic – especially at weekends – means vehicles will back up from the first set of traffic lights down Pattaya Central. The people in these backed-up cars will be sitting ducks (no pun intended) should the tunnel flood. I sincerely hope that my prophesy of doom is entirely unfounded. l Apologies to fans of the quiz and the events pages in the magazine. I’ve had to drop a few pages to save costs in response to the trying times we are encountering. They will be back when things pick up. Note I say when not if!

Fragrant scent good potential in Pattaya Condo developer Fragrant Property Co is planning to develop a major five building high-rise residential and hotel project worth Bt13.5 billion in Na-Jomtien, according to a report in the Bangkok Post. Fragrant chief executive James Duan (right) says he feels Pattaya has strong potential despite a property market dampened by slumping tourist numbers from Russia. The project, called Sixth Element Na Jomtien, will stand on a 22-rai site with a 30-metre beachfront between Sois 8 and 10 Na Jomtien. The complex will comprise three 50-storey plus towers and two more 10-storey ones. Total of units will be 1,400.The first building of 330 units

is set to launch at the end of this month. Prices will start at Bt3.9m and unit sizes range from 37 to 150 sqm. “We continue focusing on the medium-to-higher-priced segment, as the market is growing and healthier than the mid-to-low-end segment, which is slowing down,” Mr Duan said.

Raimon Land PLC has appointed Andrew Jordan as vice-president of Construction. He will have responsibility for overseeing the development and direction of all the company’s construction projects.

Aurora offer 8% over three years The developers of the Aurora project on Pratumnak are offering an eight per cent return for three years to anyone making full payment on a condo unit. At the end of that period buyers will have the option to sell the unit back to Aurora at the initial purchase price. Or Thai nationals can put 20 per cent down with a final balloon payment of 80 per cent.

Thailand tops adultery poll worldwide Thailand would like to be a world leader in many things but here’s one ranking they could do without: The country is the most adulterous in the world with 56 per cent of married adults admitting to having an affair. That’s a clear 10 per cent ahead of nearest rivals, Denmark. Thailand is the only Asian country to feature in the top 10 – all the others are in Europe. Completing the unwanted top 10 are Germany and Italy on 45 per cent, France (43), Belgium and Norway (40), Spain (39) and Finland and the United Kingdom on 36. The survey was conducted by Match.com. The Richest, a statistics edutainment site, said: “Without a doubt it’s the Wild, Wild East.”

I

n a holiday city it is common – and perhaps understandable – that the emphasis in condo and housing projects is placed on the outdoors. Having sea views is often a sales plus, swimming pools abound, the size of personal balconies is seen as important and floor-to-ceiling windows are becoming more and more common. But now New Nordic, the company specialising in developing large parts of Pratumnak Hill, have decided to reverse the trend. Big windows? Castles don’t have them. Though they will not be so thin that you can only get an arrow through them! Balconies? Don’t have them, either. Swimming pools? Actually one of the castles has one on the roof but, given it can’t be seen from the road, it does not detract from the overall castle design. Sea views? That’s not really what living in a castle is all about. With each castle it is the interiors that matter most, not the exteriors. I’ll let New Nordic chief executive

officer Kurt Svendheim take up the story. “We wanted to do something completely different; something to stand out from the crowd,” he said. “I had the idea that maybe we should take our inspiration from the castles of Europe. So I got together with my architect team in Bangkok and brainstormed a few ideas.” Kurt is keen to point out that his eight-storey Castle I and Castle II designs are a result of looking at a mix of 50 fortresses. “The look is not a copy of any one castle,” he said. Exclusive club The two castles occupy 10,000 sqm and will be connected by a bridge at sixth floor level that only owners and renters can use. The bridge will link an “open 24 hours” exclusive residents-only club and above the club will be a glass-bottomed swimming pool which will always have at least four attractive swimmers using it. The club will, of course, look like a castle interior. It will have a very big wine cellar – one of the biggest in Pattaya according to Kurt.

Look at the stats New Nordic has: l A total of 47 shops, restaurants and bars and this will increase to close to 100 soon; l On any given night they may have more than 5,000 people sleeping in their rooms; l For client convenience they have 45 cars and golf carts decked out in their distinctive orange livery – six years ago they had two; l Total number of swimming pools is 22.

“We will have a Cognac club and a cigar club also,” he added. “The club will feature a pool of beer (bottles, not beer where the water should be) featuring 320 different types. The pool will be filled with ice and big enough to swim in.” In total the Castles will have 10 restaurants and bars, many of which will be on the ground floor and will be open to all visitors. In addition they will have caves and secret rooms and tunnels. But, in acknowledgment of current preferences, the Castles will also feature a spa and gymnasium. “No one has ever seen anything like this,” said Kurt. “It will be very exclusive and really spectacular. People need to see it to understand that we are really serious about the castle concept.” The Castles have no less than three showrooms, one of which is in Manila where are lot of work developing the interiors is being performed. “Obviously you cannot easily make things to look several hundreds of years old in a matter of weeks,”

f the phrase “spoilt for choice” needs a little explaining don’t bother looking it up on the Internet. Just get yourself down to the Mantra Restaurant & Bar on Beach Road at about 11 on a Sunday morning and the true meaning will become clear within minutes of walking in. That’s when Mantra hosts a Sunday brunch of mammoth and mouth-watering proportions. Go hungry, don’t wear anything tight and prepare yourself for the “disappointment” of discovering that you can’t possibly get through as much of the delicious food on display as you would like. Like Indian food? They’ve got it. Chinese? That, too. Italian pasta and pizza? No problem. Oh and let’s not forget Japanese sushi, Thai cuisine, a display of seafood that takes some matching, all kinds of meats and fish from the grill and desserts galore. Put simply, if you like something specific and special there is a fair chance you will find it at Mantra’s Sunday brunch. I happily managed to consume just five courses of culinary delights! Perfectly chilled I started with a visit to the seafood station for some mussels, giant prawns and one of my favourites – crab claws. All were perfectly chilled and very tasty. To go with this I chose a bit chunk of homemade bread so full of fruit and nuts it reminded me of muesli. Then I was off to the sushi bar for tuna and salmon accompanied by soy sauce and fiery wasabi combined. I considered going back for more but there was still too much else on offer. Next I decided to mix my own caesar salad adding in plenty of bacon, parmesan and several large and delicious green olives. Maybe olives are not part of a classic caesar but I have a real

soft spot for them and was not going to pass up the opportunity to indulge that preference. After three courses of build-up it was time to visit the grill. I chose the lamb – another alltime favourite – two chops just on their own, no vegetables or salad as I already felt fit to burst. They were grilled to perfection. After these it was time to sit back, take a rest and quaff a little more of the Aussie Chardonnay I had ordered as part of the freeflow wine buffet. Feeling full Pace yourself, I said, there’s all this great food, you’re already feeling full and there’s no rush. The brunch doesn’t end until 3pm. I took a 20 minute break but during that time other guests kept passing by with desserts on their plate that had to be tried. A plate comprising raspberries in a crepe, cream, a gooey chocolate mousse plus white chocolate from a fountain was consumed and then that was that. I was full. Finished! All that and I had not visited the Indian, Chinese, Italian or Thai stations. Oh well, there’s always another Sunday morning! l Sunday Brunch at Mantra costs Bt1,690++ per person. Children under six eat free; aged between six to 12 at half price. The freeflow wine buffet is an additional Bt1,490++ per person.

This month we look at the second stage of steps that need to be taken to go green!

ast month we looked at the first of the three steps required to achieve “greenness heaven” in a project and concentrated on how vital is it to really get inside the requirements of the customer and to follow this up by producing sketches, perspectives and models to demonstrate a full understanding of those requirements allowing progress to be made to the next stage. Step two sees the finalisation of the design process which goes hand-in-hand with the thorough preparation of construction documents and assisting in the tendering process. Just to recap we said that at the end of Step One client involvement and a clear understanding of what is proposed is key during this phase to avoid misunderstandings – and possible hefty hikes in the budget – later on. If substantial changes are required now is undoubtedly the best time to implement them. Which takes us to ... Design development Elmar Kleiner of the Office for Interior & Architecture says: “Once leading ideas are agreed, we develop the concept into a co-ordinated design, expanding our architectural ideas and integrating further consultants into the process.” Typically this involves: l Design development / co-ordination of, and collaboration with, design consultants; l Material specifications / schedules; l Project description and computations; l LCC (life cycle cost) analysis; l Update estimate of approximate project budget; l Liaison with authorities / obtaining building permits / EIA if required; l Design consulting / visualisation; l Preparation of a final design to be signed off by the client to allow

THE STEPS According to O-I-A there are three steps in putting a project together and seeing it through to successful completion and beyond. These steps signify how they approach projects in general. They are: 1 Requirement compilation / analysis concept / schematic design 2 Design development / construction drawings and tender documents; 3 Construction implementation / post construction services. In this article we concentrate on the first elements of these steps. progress on documentation and the tendering process. Construction documents and tendering Elmar continued: “Once the design is signed off our next process is to produce co-ordinated construction documents for tender. “These documents will serve for a professional tendering process and allow significant value engineering.” So this involves: l Production of co-ordinated construction documents; l Pre-qualifying the main contractors; l Collaboration with potential suppliers of materials, equipment and the like; l Responding to architectural tender queries; l Evaluation of returned proposals from main contractors; l Support of co-ordinated value engineering; l Negotiations/award co-ordination of main contractors. Next month the third and final step looks at the construction process and the checks O-I-A propose to help monitor the eco savings and ensure that the measures they have introduced are fully understood and implemented.

Jordana Brewster is a Panamanian-born Brazilian/American actress who features in the Furious 7 (previously known as Fast & Furious 7) action film. It is the sequel to the 2013 film Fast & Furious 6 and the seventh in the Fast & Furious series. Jordana’s co-stars include Vin Diesel, (the late) Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Lucas Black and Jason Statham. With the previous three instalments being set between 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006), Furious 7 is the first film of the series to take place after Tokyo Drift. It marks the final film appearance of Paul Walker, who died on November 30, 2013, with filming only half-complete. After Walker’s death filming was delayed for script re-writes and his brothers Caleb and Cody were used as stand-ins to complete his remaining scenes.

The Interview People: You were born in Panama, but you were raised in Brazil. In some places they say you’re Brazilian in others they say you’re from Panama. Do you consider yourself a Latina? Jordana Brewster: I am a Latina for sure, but a ’Latina Brazilera’. Oh my gosh, I love brigadeiros. In Brazil, it’s the best food, it really is. TIP: Do you think the doors are finally wide open for other Hollywood actors or there’s still trouble to find the ’key’? JB: I think they’re more than wide open. I think it might change, but for right now at least it is an asset to be Latino. It’s really, really great. It’s about time. TIP: Could we talk about the Paul Walker tragedy?

JB: I worked with Paul (Walker) for many, many years and he was a very, very good friend of mine. It’s a loss that I still feel to this day. It’s a huge tragedy and a loss, very difficult to process. I’m so private and I’m not going to talk about that, I’m sorry. It’s never going to be the same without him. TIP: Do you know who handles the Twitter account? He is still tweeting. JB: I’m not sure, I know that his organisation is still active and I believe one of his brothers is working at his organisation that does amazing things. I think someone handles the Twitter account, but I’m not sure who it is. Natural beauty TIP: Do you realise that the movies as much action as they have, it wouldn’t be the same without the smart natural beauty that you or Michelle Rodriguez also provide? JB: Aww, thank you. That’s so nice. Do I think it adds to the movie? I hope so. I hope girls go to the movie and are able to relate to one of our characters. Especially with Michelle, with the fact that she really does get to kick so much ass and she gets to be in fight scenes and I think it’s such a great female role model, that Michelle provides. I hope we bring something to the table, thank you. TIP: Behind closed doors, when you

are in front of a mirror, do you see the same sexual symbol the rest of the world sees? JB: I am able to see that image after hair and make-up on a very good day, but I think every morning when I wake up, that’s not what I see. Why an actress? TIP: What was it that you decided to become an actress? JB: I just tried it when I was 16. I watched novellas when I was in Brazil as a kid. I also had this energy where I wanted to get it out. I needed an outlet and I thought acting was such a great way to get it out. My mother tried to talk me out of it, because she was a model in Brazil and she knew more about business than my father did. I said, if I keep my perfect job, I go to school, there’s no better way to try it while I’m still at home. I was very practical in the way I approached it. Luckily, it worked out. TIP: Is it true that you promised your parents that you would keep your good grades and you would go to college too? JB: Yes it is true. That was the deal. TIP: Did you follow through with that promise? JB: I did, I graduated from high school and I got Bs and Cs and then I went to Yale. TIP: A lot of teenagers dream the same,

to be on TV in a movie at that age... is the same glamour they all think it is or it is really a hard job people don’t know about? JB: I had friends who said, “come on, you have to come and party. Later on you’re going to regret not having fun,” but my priorities were just so different. I said, “later on I’m going to go back and look at the movie I was making when you were partying and I’m going to have more to remember.” I never regretted working so young. I think it built and taught me a really good work ethic. Another tragedy TIP: You also work in the Dallas TV series...and they also had another tragedy with the loss of Larry Hagman, Jr. Is there a before and after his death? JB: Yes, of course. I’m very good friends with Linda Gray. I adore her. Whenever I talk about Larry it’s more with Linda because she was so close to him. He was so wonderful. I’m so lucky to be able to have the opportunity to work with him before he passed because he was such an icon and had so much talent, so his presence was also greatly missed. TIP: And at a personal level do you consider yourself fast or furious? JB: Well, actually, I’m very fast. I think my tempo is definitely much

faster, especially when it comes to my husband (Andrew Form). I definitely like to keep things moving, keep things going, but I’m also very furious. Every once in a while I do have a very hot temper, so I stand both, fast and furious. TIP: Who is the faster or more furious ... at home in your marriage? JB: I say both. I’m faster and more furious. TIP: Doesn’t your husband get ‘furious’ around your romantic scenes? JB: You know, my husband is very, very secure, thank God. He’s definitely ok with it. I’m very lucky to have a very secure man at home or my life would be very unhappy. TIP: And you’ve met your husband during the shooting of another movie... Texas Chainsaw Massacre? JB: Yes, I met him, I think it was eight years ago, on Texas Chainsaw. Work together TIP: He is also the movie producer of movies like Friday the 13th, Purge and Ouija... why haven’t you ever work together again? JB: I would love to work with him again. I’ll surely will. I just have to find the right thing. TIP: And at home, are you also the big star of the marriage and he is the producer of your life? JB: No, at home we talk a lot about

work and it’s really fun because I get to show him scripts and he get to give me his opinion. He shows me scripts and I give him my opinion. It’s very balanced in that way. Because I’m an actress, I’m a little bit more of a diva, thank God. I don’t think I could handle him if he was a diva, as well. That would not work. He’s much more level headed and much more calm than I am. The dynamic works. Surrogate mother TIP: Since the last Fast and Furious movie, there was also a big change in your life with your baby through a surrogate mother... could we talk about that huge decision? JB: It wasn’t really a decision. It was something I had to do because I could not carry a baby. It’s a leap of faith because you trust someone with the most precious thing in the world. For nine months, someone else was carrying my baby and I really, really had to trust them and I have a wonderful relationship with my surrogate. We talked a lot on the stall and stayed in communication. It’s a very, very unique relationship. To me surrogates are angels, they are the most selfless people because they give up so much in order to allow people that wouldn’t otherwise be able to

have children, to have children. I just have so much respect for her and I’m so happy it’s an available option. TIP: Since you keep the relationship with her, do you think your baby will keep the relationship with her as an aunt? Do you want to? JB: I don’t know. He’ll always be aware of the part that she had in his life. I think it’s very particular to the family. There’s a different dynamic with different surrogates. Sometimes it’s an egg donor, with my baby it was gestational surrogate. He’s my egg and he’s all me, but somebody carries him. I think I have to decide. It’s very personal if I want to share that information with him, but I haven’t thought so much about that. Movies too? TIP: Do you think he’ll ever work in movies too, like mom and dad? JB: I would love him to be a director, producer, or a writer, but I hope he doesn’t choose to be an actor. TIP: Really? JB: Yeah, it’s so hard. It gets tougher as you get older. I think with so much being out to other people, it’s a very challenging business. I would love him to be in an aspect of the business where he has a little bit more in control. I would wish that for him, but, of course, he can do whatever he wants. |

Things on my ‘bucket list’

E

very year we make plans for what we would like to do, places we would like to go and things we would like to achieve and I am no different although I rarely get around to writing them down or in fact achieving them! Most of my wishes, after health, wealth and happiness, of course, revolve around different places that I would like to visit. Although I probably won’t get to visit most of these places in 2015 they are places I would like to go in the next few years and I thought I would share a 12 of these ideas with you. Maybe they match up with some of your hopes and aspirations:

River Kwai This is probably the one that I have most chance of achieving this year. I know a lot of people who have been

there over the years but for various reasons (usually work related) I have never had the opportunity to go. I have seen the pictures and, of course, I know the story so seeing Hellfire Pass (below) would probably be very thought provoking and remain with me for the rest of my life. The Maldives Although I am not particularly a beach loving person, mainly due to the fact that I have fair skin and a bald head, The Maldives is somewhere that I have wanted to go for a number of years. The clear blue waters, the undeniable luxury and the chance just to get away from it all for a few days would be an opportunity that I will take one day. Obviously, this would be best spent with a loved one rather than a group of mates to make the most of the experience!

Seeing Hellfire Pass would probably be very thought provoking and remain with me for the rest of my life.

Iceland I really don’t like cold weather, which is one of the reasons that Pattaya has been my home for a long time now, but I would make an exception with Iceland. The rugged landscapes and geezers would be a unique experience and probably something that you wouldn’t get anywhere else in the world. Venice I have been to Venice a couple of times already so it maybe shouldn’t be included on a ‘bucket list’ but the city is probably my favourite place in the world. There really is nowhere like Venice with the labyrinth of canals everywhere in the city. I love Italian food, Italian wine and just the whole lifestyle of Venice, although sadly you would probably have to be a multi-millionaire to live there! 

New Zealand New Zealand is another one of those places that appears different from other countries. Being from the near the Peak District in the UK I am used to rolling green hills and let’s face it ... sheep, but New Zealand seems something else. I can’t say that I have any interest in fishing but listening to Kiwi friends who tell stories about their trips out on their boats, perhaps it is something that I could enjoy. If nothing else, I think I would certainly start relaxing with a few ‘tinnies’ inside me!

An Ashes Test Match I am cricket lover, never much of a player but I do enjoy watching the game. If I could choose the perfect game it would be the Boxing Day Ashes Test Match at the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) with the obligatory packed crowd and the atmosphere that would naturally come with it. To round it off perfectly England would win on the final over of the final day – well, I can always dream! Japan Japan is one of the places that I have always wanted to go to and if I was honest I don’t really know why! I don’t particularly like Japanese food and hate shopping but I am fascinated by the culture and the temples – mainly outside of the big cities. This isn’t one of my first picks on

the list but certainly one of the places that I want go before my time is up!

Bhutan An interest in Bhutan dates back to my school days when a junior school teacher had taught there for a year. She used to tell us all the stories and show us pictures of the country and I was fascinated. I have always been impressed with rugged mountains so perhaps the backdrop of the Himalayas is just another reason that makes me want to visit the country. The country isn’t too far from Thailand, certainly in comparison to the UK so hopefully this will be one of the countries that I get to visit sooner rather than later.

Egypt and the Pyramids I don’t think that there can be many people who don’t have some interest in Ancient Egypt, the Valley of the Kings and of course the Pyramids. Egypt has so much history and is again completely different from anywhere else in the world. From what I have read and what I have been told you would probably need a few weeks to view everything, certainly not a few days so this may have to be one that has to wait until I have some more free time on my hands! Peru – Inca Temples Peru is another place that I have always wanted to visit. The ancient Inca ruins that sit high on the

New Orleans Although I am not particularly a big fan of blues music I can see the fascination with New Orleans. I think it is probably one of those places that you have to visit to appreciate everything that it has to offer. I have been to the States a couple of times in the past but, sadly, didn’t get the opportunity to go to the Deep South. As you can probably tell from my ‘bucket list’ I have far more of an interest in places with a little bit of history and culture than anything else. The odd beach holiday for a bit of relaxation would also be a welcome break at the moment! I will continue to keep doing the lottery in the hope that I can visit these places in near future rather than over the space of a few years!

hock, horror headlines in the Aussie media are claiming that tanning beds kill 43 Australians a year through melanoma alone and are responsible for another 2,600 annual skin cancer diagnoses. Is this really so? A team at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research has estimated sun beds are responsible for 281 cases of melanoma each year, the deadliest skin cancer. Overall, 43 of these patients died. Having come from Queensland, I can tell you that Queensland is considered the melanoma capital of the world, and of all the skin cancers you can get, malignant melanoma is the worst. If ignored and not caught early, it spreads throughout the body and almost all of these sufferers die within 12 months. That is despite heroic (and expensive) treatment.

The reason the indigenous native aboriginals did not have the same incidence of melanoma as the white settlers was linked to skin colour.

When we first began to keep statistics on the incidence of melanoma in Australia, it became quickly evident that the further north you went (towards the Equator) the greater the number of melanomas. White skin and UV radiation did not go well together. It did not need rocket science to see that perhaps the reason the indigenous native aboriginals did not have the same incidence of melanoma as the white settlers was linked to skin colour. Whitening creams However, human nature being as perverse as it is, the white folks want to be brown (which is why solariums are popular in Australia) and the brown folks want to be white (which is why whitening creams are the number one cosmetic cream sold in Thailand). However, the Thai people, even with their naturally protective brown

skin, do stay out of the sun as much as possible, (standing in a line in the shadow of the telephone pole), and have reduced their incidence of possible melanoma. While we farangs, with our totally unsuitable pink one-button birthday suits, stand in the sun’s rays as much as possible. The bad news about malignant melanoma you have already read, but there is some good news. Catch it early enough, before it begins to spread, and you can escape. If you have any dark coloured ‘spot’ that has changed shape, colour, or become itchy you should get some expert advice from a specialist dermatologist. It is too dangerous to ‘wait and see’. Giving the pump a thump!

any years ago I had an MG TC, and it was well used. This would have been 1964, and the MG TC was 15 years old at that time. It was all a bit loose and rattly, and you lifted the doors into place to close them. Anyone who has had an old wood-framed sports car will understand what I mean. We used to say that the only thing that held the wooden frame together was that the termites held hands! The bulkhead between the engine bay and the passenger area in the MG TC had a recess for the battery and on the other side was the Lucas electric fuel pump. Another fine Lucas product, which went along with their invention of the intermittent headlights. There was good reason for Lucas to be called ‘The Prince of Darkness’. Another Lucas invention was the intermittent fuel pump, and my MG TC had one. When it wouldn’t go tick-tick-tick you unscrewed the cover and exposed

the points and the trembler, gave them a tweak and the pump would remember what it was supposed to do, tick-tick-tick, and you were off again. Rejoicing and saying bad words about Mr Lucas’ parentage. The MG Car Club would have sprint meetings about every three months. These were held on the Lowood racing circuit, a converted former WWII airfield, with a 1.5 km straight on what had been the main runway. Seething halt I had prepared the MG TC for the whole week before the sprints. Polished to within an inch of its life and I was certain I would win my class – until half way down the quarter mile, Mr Lucas’ intermittent fuel pump came into action and I ground to a seething halt. Getting out of the car, I opened the bonnet and gave the pump a damn good thump, and away it ticktick-tick went again. I returned to the pits muttering threats.

For the next run, I removed the side of the bonnet, exposing the fuel pump, which I could just reach with a 300mm iron bar. Yes, you guessed it – on my second run I was hanging out the side of the cockpit, beating the bejeezus out of the pump with my iron bar, looking like a jockey cajoling his horse to greater things with a whip. That iron bar became an integral part of the MG TC. Slipped down beside seat, it was always ready to help. I took the bonnet sides off permanently, and ran two leather straps over the bonnet, like the prewar Bentleys, and with its faithful iron bar the MG went for another two years. Eventually I fitted an MGA 1500 engine, which came with a Derrington cross-flow alloy head, and a non-Lucas fuel pump. The 300mm iron bar was no longer needed, but fuel was again to be a problem with that engine. But that is another tale for another day. |

What a difference a coup makes Thailand and America ... disenchanted with one other?

A

little more than two years ago REM published an article headlined “Mostly Sunny with a Chance of Turmoil”, an essay on the state of political affairs between the US, Thailand, ASEAN and China. In it the author recounted the American President’s ASEAN tour and examined what Barack Obama called a “pivot” to Asia. Now the changes in the dynamics of this inter-continental chess game could affect everyone living in the Land of Smiles.

Barack on tour While on tour, Mr Obama hopped around Southeast Asia, pressing palms and showering the region with his enigmatic personality. He arrived with an olive branch and a pocket full of trade deals, but most experts agree this trip was a

response to China christening a new aircraft carrier and stirring up an old territorial hornet’s nest in the South China Sea. Actions Americans consider “excessive influence” by China over the budding democracy in Myanmar probably had something to do with this sudden “pivot” as well. During the Cambodian leg of the visit, the cool reception from strong man Hun Sen graphically demonstrated which side of the Sino-American fence his loyalties lay. The Chinese openly embrace authoritarian regimes like the one in Cambodia. Mr Obama made it a point to emphasise he was reaching out to all ASEAN members. On the opposite end of the scale, the American President was fawned over by the prevailing Thai leadership in the person of the then

prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra. Mr Obama and the Thai PM frolicked and posed for pictures like a couple of school kids. He called Thailand “America’s oldest ally in Asia”. She told him how much she supported his Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) idea. It was a magic week. But America wasn’t the only rich boy at the dance and Wen Jiabao, the front man for China at the time, wooed Yingluck with trade deals and infrastructure projects of his own. Wen arrived to as much fanfare as his American counterpart, although he and the Thai leader’s economic pillow-talk was a little more low-key. Party crasher Fast forward to May 2014 and the Thai/US love affair is over. After months of political upheaval and violence, the Army decided to do what

More recently, China’s defence minister held talks with PM Prayuth in Bangkok to solidify their military co-operation, in an escalating relationship observers say could be a bargaining chip with Washington. Chinese troops are also taking part

in the Cobra Gold military exercise alongside more than 20 other nations. No more “observer status” for them. Benjamin Zawacki, a visiting fellow from Harvard Law School, said: “Washington’s interests have clearly shifted from Thailand to the Middle East and elsewhere. This lack of attention from the US has enabled China to gradually gain ground in Thailand by increasing its presence in the region. “Thailand is important to the US, but the country’s role of being the guardian of democratic principles is losing ground to China’s pragmatism,” he added. Thammasat University historian ThanetAphornsuvan went further when he said: “The current political regime in Thailand has led the country to align with the Chinese.” Angry rhetoric A series of policy statements and undenied rumors that Washington is considering a full round of economic sanctions on Thailand have ramped up the angry rhetoric between the two disenchanted nations. In a speech at Chulalongkorn University, Daniel Russel, the US assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs, was quoted as saying that the impeachment of Yingluck Shinawatra may have been politically motivated. He went on to call for the lifting of martial law. Thai lawmakers, scholars and intelligentsia from all corners of society expressed outrage at US

Cambodia’s PM Hun Sen, Thailand’s PM Prayuth, China’s Premier Li and Myanmar’s President Thein Sein join hands in Bangkok at a meeting held last December. China has offered more than $3 billion in loans and aid to neighbours Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Thailand and Laos to improve infrastructure and production, and to fight poverty.

interference in Thai affairs. General Prayuth dragged the closest thing he could find to a US diplomat, US envoy Patrick Murphy, in for a little face-saving “attitude” session. In the end, the US simply restated its position and insisted it is “not taking sides”, merely upholding the principles of democracy, just like it does everywhere else in the world. Masters of diplomacy So what are we talking about here? Are the US and Thailand finished? Have the persistent and patient gentleman from China managed to land such a strategically big catch? It’s not likely. Let’s remember, Thailand laid down for the Japanese, even declaring war on the US during WWII, until it was no longer to their advantage. Anthony Davis, a Bangkokbased military expert with HISJane’s made and astute observation when he said: “The Thais are past masters at the art of diplomacy and they have no desire, in my estimation, to jump into bed with the Chinese dragon.” Davis went on to say: “We’re talking about a rebalancing, an important, perhaps even a watershed recalibration of the relationship with the US. But the Thais have got too much to lose by a total realignment towards China. It’s inconceivable.” Well said Mr Davis.

it has done repeatedly in Thailand … take over. Ms Shinawatra was out and under indictment for misdeeds during her short run as PM. General Prayuth showed up at the party like an authoritarian headmaster. He silenced opposition, jailed dissidents and declared martial law. After installing himself as the boss, the “retired” general has taken to calling those who do not share his opinion on the carpet for “attitude adjustments”. As you might imagine, none of this has gone over well with the cuckolded United States. But, as is the case with most love affairs, it’s partly America’s fault. Apparently, several raging wars in the Middle East and Mr Putin rattling his sword in the Ukraine have diluted the resolve of Mr Obama’s pivot. In fact it appears that Thailand’s new leadership is making a pivot of its own.

AIPP: Acronym stands for The Association of International Property Professionals which is a not-for-profit organisation whose aim is to improve the standards of professionalism in the international property market, helping both the industry and the public. CIPS: Certified International Property Specialist – this is a members-only group which is for international practitioners of the National Association of REALTORS®. CRS: Certified Residential Specialist (CRS) is the top professional designation awarded to REALTORS® in residential sales. Held by fewer than five per cent of all REALTORS®.
