Hit the deck(chairs)! I read the following on the Pattaya One website recently. The report said: “In an unusual attempt to lure tourists, both foreign and domestic, back to Pattaya Beach, authorities have begun a ‘Day-Off’ scheme, where deckchairs and umbrellas and their operators are banned from Pattaya Beach every Wednesday.”

I confess that reading it left me more than somewhat bemused. Now the short report doesn’t actually name the “authorities” involved but most things regarding the city’s beach seem to be the domain of City Hall so I hope it is safe to assume it is their idea. Before I go further I should point out that I doubt if I have sat on any of the beaches around Pattaya more than 10 times in as many years. I don’t care for sand on my feet; I can’t swim and my frame makes it embarrassing to try to get in and out of deckchairs without wrecking them or

doing some mischief to myself. I am not a beach person. All that conceded I have no particular axe to grind about deckchair or

umbrella operators. They don’t bother me; I don’t bother them. But the thing that stood out to me from this report is that if it is sincerely felt that tourists are being put off visiting the beach does one “Day-Off” go far enough? The report continued: “According to the beachgoers we spoke with the ban was welcomed as many are hesitant to use the deckchairs and umbrellas as they fear potential problems with the operators.”

It is not a personal ambition to see deckchair and umbrella operators lose their livelihoods but if their presence is acting as a deterent to visitors surely banning them for only one day is not the answer. Pattaya cannot become an “only worth going to the beach on a Wednesday” destination. I understand that visitors who have read about problems with jet-ski operators might form the conclusion that the beach represents rip-off alley. But from my own limited experience this does not apply to the deckchair and umbrella folk. Whenever I go the the beach my wife goes with me. She’s Thai and, given that every baht saved might potentially go to her, she looks after my interests and is my insurance against possible rip offs. I realise that tourists don’t have the same “insurance policy”. I actually think that deckchair operators can enhance the beach visit experience if they go about their business in a proper manner. Banning them for a day seems akin to an admission that they are all up to no good. My opinion is that the deckchairs should be kept seven days a week but that the operators be monitored to ensure that they help the tourists as opposed to hindering them. Maybe ask members of the Tourist Police to pose as beachgoers every now and again to report any abuses.

Members of the property community turned out in big numbers for the opening of the Pacific Bay showrooms on Jomtien Second Road last month. Pacific Bay is the newest project from leading developers, Nova Group. The on-site showroom showcases the one- and two-bedroomed units in the project. There are also studios planned for the development but “we saw little point incorporating them in the showroom as they are nearly completely sold,” said Nova Group sales manager Keith Storey. The project comprises 481 units in 33 storeys and units range from 22sqm studios up to 69.4sqm twobedroom apartments. At the starting price of Bt70,000 per sqm that gives an entry price level of Bt1.54m. The project is Nova’s first on Jomtien’s Second Road and the showroom can be found on the left driving away from the Hanuman Statue at the highest point on the road.

Tunnel vision?

Nusasiri plans

After many delays and postponements work has finally started on the tunnel linking Sukhumvit Road with Pattaya Central designed to ease congestion. It had been hoped it would start late last year but this was delayed in case traffic hold-ups would adversely affect high season visitors. The idea was first mooted some six years ago.

This year Nusasiri plans to launch four residential projects worth Bt23bn – two condos in Sriracha worth Bt13bn combined, one in Pattaya at Bt9bn and one in Phuket to the tune of Bt1bn. The company targets Bt5bn in pre-sales and Bt3bn in revenue this year. Nusasiri earned Bt77.81m on revenue of Bt1.05bn in the first nine months of last year.

Riviera brings glamour to Jomtien with a new upmarket showroom

he property community here in Pattaya has been treated to some spectacular launch parties in the years I have been associated with this magazine and the one held to announce the opening of The Riviera Jomtien showroom late in January is right up there with the best of them. Indeed on the day following the event I spoke to one broker who said he thought it was the best. So, what made it special? Well, I have never had the privilege of attending the Oscars ceremony in the US but I think there were a few similarities. The road outside the showroom was closed with only party-goers – many hundreds of them – allowed in. Major guests were delivered to the entrance in a stretch limo before making a red carpet entrance. The opening was greeted with Champagne and fireworks as one might expect. Add to this great entertainment from a top band, a collection of songs from popular singing star Tu (Popetorn Soonthornyanakij), the presence of Riviera’s brand ambassador, actress and model Metinee Kongpayome, plus many leading figures from the property world and you start to get an

idea of what it was like to be there on the opening night. The project is marketed under the tagline “Born to be Glamorous” and the showroom certainly lives up to the billing. Large beautifully framed mirrors are everywhere, chandeliers and other special lighting abound, the furniture looks almost too good to sit on and the soft furnishings round things off in sophisticated style. The showroom is not hard to find. It is at the Na-Jomtien end of Jomtien’s Second Road before you reach the Chaiyapruk junction. The actual site of the development is more towards the Hanuman Statue end of the road. When complete in 2018 The Riviera Jomtien will be one of the biggest (perhaps the biggest) single structures in the Pattaya/Jomtien area. More confident Winston Gale, the head of The Riviera Group, doesn’t believe in doing things by halves. At a prior press conference he said: “The Riviera Jomtien follows on from the huge and continuing success of The Riviera Wongamat. Today I’m even more confident that The Riviera Jomtien will provide an excellent alternative for those who

This month we look at the steps that need to be taken to go green!

ccording to the song there are “Three Steps to Heaven” and similarly if you wish to achieve true “greenness” in a project you need to take the same number ... that’s the view of Elmar Kleiner of the Office for Interior & Architecture. We list those steps in the panel alongside and in this month’s issue we will concentrate on the first one. Requirement compilation O-I-A’s first step on any kind of project, whether it’s an individual’s house or a company’s factory, is to gain as deep an understanding as possible of the client’s brief. As part of this they arrange a site visit with the client to “establish a connection with the typology and spirit of the site,” as Elmar puts it. Every client is different. Some can – and do – devote a lot of time to be fully involved in the original briefing; others cannot perhaps spare the time and leave more of the conceptual ideas to Elmar and his team. Either way O-I-A are happy. “It’s good to work with people who have a clear idea of what they want to achieve but, by the same token, having a lot of freedom to inject our ideas is also very rewarding,” said Elmar. Analysis concept “We put a lot of emphasis on the initial analysis,” he added. “It’s vital if we are to come up with the right programme. Indeed sometimes we are left questioning if it is even the right site. “Once we have a good idea of the setting we conduct a fundamental research, analysing the impact of the attendant circumstances and their influences on the assignment.” Elmar says they typically put all the required “ingredients” into a metaphorical large cooking pot,

THE STEPS According to O-I-A there are three steps in putting a project together and seeing it through to successful completion and beyond. These steps signify how they approach projects in general. They are: 1 Requirement compilation / analysis concept / schematic design 2 Design development / construction drawings and tender documents; 3 Construction implementation / post construction services. In this article we concentrate on the first elements of these steps. add a few “spices” influenced by the site and O-I-A’s experiences, and produce a dish (conceptual formula) to the client’s taste. Which leads to ... Schematic design Keeping the results of the previous elements in mind O-I-A generates a leading idea, a holistic story, which they illustrate with sketches, models, images and descriptions. See alongside. So, as part of this final element of the initial phase, they do the following: l Produce an overall concept; l Play a support role in the selection of design consults; l Then co-ordinate and collaborate with the design consultants; l Produce an estimate of the project’s required budget and map out a proposed schedule; l Consult on the concept and preliminary visuals. Client involvement and a clear understanding of what is proposed is key during this phase to avoid misunderstandings – and possible hefty hikes in the budget – later on. If substantial changes are required now is undoubtedly the best time to implement them. |

ometimes The Chow Hound gets in arguments over food. Ok, maybe more than “sometimes”. What really gets The Hound frothing at the mouth and straining at the end of his civility leash is people bashing American cuisine. According to The Hound, what Americans do best is take pre-existing cuisine and making it better. This month, he found a shining example of American fare to support his bulldoggish stance at “Pastrami on Rye” and “The American Pizza Factory”. Both these establishments are located just off Jomtien Beach Road, between Soi 8 and Soi 9, inside the Casa Jomtien housing estate. John and Sean, an all-American father and son team from Wisconsin, have operated a take-away and delivery business for some time now. The other month they built out a sit-down restaurant with about 20 seats. Classic sandwiches Pastrami on Rye offers classic American sandwiches like a Reuben, Corned Beef on Rye, Philly Cheese Steak, Classic Roast Beef, Pulled Pork, Cuban Pressed Sandwich, a Meatball Sub, and, of course, the namesake … Pastrami on Rye. The Hound says you don’t need either of the owners telling you they process all their own meat; you can just taste the difference. The Pastrami on Rye is New York Kosher Deli Style with an enormous pile of fresh pastrami stacked up on fresh rye bread and topped with cheese and Thousand Island dressing. It is a hungerstopping, eye-popping monster of a sandwich. And the meatball sub? According to The Hound, there are three things that make this handful of beefy goodness a “must try”. First, the half-pound of hand-made meatballs are flawlessly executed. Second, the zesty marinara

sauce is poured on thick and spiced for flavour, not just looks. And finally, all that is squeezed into a freshly steamed and spongy-soft hoagie roll. Do not eat this sandwich in a white shirt. The American Pizza Factory is Pastrami on Rye’s twin and offers Thin Crust, Sicilian, Pan, and Chicago Deep Dish pizzas as well as Calzones and Stromboli. Dozens of individual toppings are available as well as classic combinations like the “meat lovers”, “fourcheese” and “Supreme”. The Hound chose the “Thin Crust Party Cut Supreme” that includes the classic toppings all Americans love. The crust was wafer thin and crunchy. The sausage, green peppers, black olives, onions, mushrooms and pepperoni were all cut to the perfect size and smothered in just the right amount of mozzarella cheese. The Hound usually says a pizza is a pizza, but in the case of The American Pizza Factory, every topping can be tasted individually and in symphony with the others. He can’t wait to try the big Chicago Deep Dish, but will need to call in some of his pack to help devour this hefty pie. New Nordic – building a community to last

ake a trip to the middle of Pratumnak and look around you. If you think you are seeing the colour orange in just about every direction do not adjust the transparency on your sunglasses. It is everywhere! The reason is that orange is the corporate colour of the New Nordic Group ... and their developments occupy a considerable number of plots stretching over five sois north to south and four sois east to west. Put simply, the people who run New Nordic are committed to the area – big time. They are now on their 49th project (yes 49) on Pratumnak and a spectacular 50th is not too far away given that, on average, they launch a new development every two months. Impressive stats Just take in some of the other impressive statistics. As part of their offering New Nordic have: l Some 47 shops, restaurants and bars and this number will increase to close to 100 within the next 12 months; l On any given night they may have more than 5,000 people sleeping in rooms built by them; l For customers’ convenience and as an aid to running the business they have 45 cars and golf carts decked out in their distinctive orange livery – six years ago they had two;

l The number of swimming pools spread over their projects is 22 and that figure will also increase soon. The big numbers just keep coming but it should be made clear that even with these large figures New Nordic chief executive officer Kurt Svendheim and his team still manage to create a family resort atmosphere. I took a stroll around just a few of their projects in the company of Kurt and was impressed by what I saw. Kurt is a man with a ready smile and everywhere we went there was no shortage of smiles and encouraging words in return from both guests and his staff. Kurt is keen to talk to anyone and everyone, content in the knowledge that his guests are happy. “I tell customers that this is my life,” he said. “My office is in the middle of the projects and the door is always open. I live here with my family. I want my family to live somewhere nice so it makes sense to make it somewhere special for my customers also. “I need happy customers. I don’t want to spend my life avoiding them in case they have complaints so my team and I make sure that they are looked after properly. That way I can enjoy a very good life here.” As part of developing a place that he is happy to live in Kurt pays


Move on Many developers buy land, build a project and then move on to something new perhaps in a completely different part of town. That’s not the New Nordic way. They are in it for the long haul. “I want to keep the projects together for the next 20 years at least,” said Kurt. The New Nordic business model means that they retain a lot of the Thai quota in their buildings. “When we launch a new project we often sell the foreign quota in four or five weeks,” he added. “Last week, for example, we sold 30 units over all our projects to the value of Bt88m. We usually sell four apartments a day.” Kurt keeps unsold units for New Nordic to rent out and he also provides a very efficient rental service for investors and owners. “People can go 200 metres down the road and buy something cheaper but if they want to be confident that

their unit is well cared for and is likely to yield a good return on investment, they come to us,” he said. New Nordic build only in the Pratumnak area which has easy access to three beaches. They are constructing a community of lowrise, inter-linked projects where each has something distinctive about it, but there is evidence of joined-up thinking that extends way beyond simply using orange highlights on every building. For example as part of the desire to build a complete community they have even set aside land in Soi 4 to build their own supermarket. “It will be the size of a Foodmart or Foodland and similarly it will specialise in products that appeal to foreigners,” Kurt told me. The New Nordic community is already fairly self-sufficient even before the supermarket is built. “People really don’t need to leave New Nordic to enjoy themselves,” said Kurt. “We are big in F&B (food and beverage) and when our current plans are complete I think we may be the biggest F&B operation in the city.” New Nordic’s desire to cater for every need means they have amenities such as their own petrol pump near their offices. They have car rental facilities and motorbike hire. They even have their own travel agency with offices in Pattaya and

Who is buying? As one might expect – given the group’s name – units in New Nordic are especially popular with Scandinavians in general and Norwegians in particular. But the company also does a lot of marketing in France and to Russians. “We do a lot of roadshows to tax islands – almost every month,” said Kurt. “We rent space in a top tax haven hotel and market our units there.” It’s a scheme that obviously pays off. “During a day we can easily sell 20 apartments,” he concluded.

Kurt’s home country – Norway – which helps ensure that occupancy rates are always high. “Of course our customers want to see Pattaya and we certainly encourage them to do just that, but if they take just a few meals and drinks on-site during their stay we are happy,” said Kurt. He explained that six years ago the average per person spend was around Bt1,000. Now that figure is closer to Bt4,000. Guests don’t need to take a wallet or purse out given most things – from shop purchases to massages; laundry to transportation – can be charged to the room. Very quiet “If you sit here and listen,” said Kurt as we sat in his meeting room, “you will notice how very quiet it is here.” That quietness suits him. “I don’t go to big happenings in the city. You won’t find me at networking evenings. That’s not my style,” he said. “I like to go about my work in modest way. Yes I’m the CEO but I have 11 great foreign managers helping to run New Nordic backed up by many wonderful Thai staff. Top 10 wishes for 2015

N

ow that we are firmly in the new year and recovered from all the excesses from festive period celebrations we look to what we would like from the forthcoming year. I have listed some of my hopes and wishes for 2015, some of them serious and some of them are just a bit of fun!

1 Political stability For those who have lived in Thailand for any length of time, political instability is almost a way of life. While I have no affiliation with any of the political parties, I like many, get tired of the impact that it has on our day-to-day lives and sometimes our careers or businesses. Stability is needed for us all to prosper and this will surely improve the quality of our lives!

2 Tourists comeback in droves A lot of the time you can hear expats or the long-term visitors saying “isn’t it great without the tourists?” In reality when Pattaya is thriving we are all better off. More is invested in bars and restaurants and there is generally more money around and the place seems to be “buzzing”. My only issue with this is that I want a seat in my favourite bar on Sunday lunchtimes! 3 Reduced corruption Corruption is something most of us are tired of. Paying “tea money” for something that should just happen naturally is frustrating to say the least. Being able to buy your way out of trouble or to achieve preferential treatment is something that holds the country back in so many respects. Corruption hinders

everyone apart from those who are set to pocket the money from their antics. Thailand is a great country so let’s not let a few corrupt individuals spoil it for everyone else. 4 Cool weather continues for longer in the mornings I certainly prefer the climate of Thailand when compared to back in the UK, but the cooler mornings we have been experiencing as I write this have been very welcome. I know this won’t last for long but the longer it does the better in my opinion! Not arriving at work sweaty after just walking a few yards will be a relief to my colleagues as well I would expect! Though listening to my girlfriend complaining about feeling cold can get a tad wearisome. The hot season will soon be here so I will enjoy the milder weather while I can.


6 People move out of way for ambulances! My pet hate in Thailand is the fact that no one will move out of the way of an ambulance when it has its sirens on. This may be because of where I come from, but I really can’t understand why people wouldn’t move out of the way. A matter of a few seconds can save lives and I often wonder how these people would feel if the ambulance was taking one of their relatives to hospital only for it to be delayed by someone who must be two metres in front? It really wouldn’t affect you to move out of the way and you could consider it your good deed for the day! 7 People to realise that they don’t need to shout on the phone A minor gripe in comparison to my annoyance about ambulance

obstructions, but I don’t understand why people feel the urge to shout down telephones. Phones have a microphone that is designed to pick up your voice and the person on the other end will have no problem hearing you! If it is that essential that you must shout, perhaps you could consider doing away with the phone all together and just shout to each other. This would still be annoying but at least I could perhaps understand the logic behind it and it would save you the cost of the phone call! 8 Find out early which days are no alcohol days! Without wishing to sound like a raging alcoholic, it would be nice to know in advance what days the sale of alcohol is banned in Thailand as it does seem to change each year! These days off work are often welcomed by friends who would enjoy the opportunity to meet up and enjoy a relaxing beer. Ideally this would be in a bar but other arrangements can be made if we know in advance! Finding out when you are three-quarters on the way to the bar really isn’t a help especially when the house parties then become out of the question as it is too late to buy any beer! 9 The building work stops near my condo! From a purely selfish point of view I would like all the building work around my condo to finish in 2015!

I realise this is unlikely to happen as there are several projects underway at present but I can always dream! As I am at work most of the day the noise doesn’t bother me but the dust gets everywhere including my clothes. So to all the developers out there – please stop building near MY condo or NIMBY (not in my backyard) as it would be referred to back home! 10 The baht weakens! This is another one from a selfish stance! As I still bring funds into Thailand from my home country I would be very happy to see the value to the baht fall. Naturally, this will make things a great deal cheaper for me and a few others relying on money from overseas so we would be quite happy! Ideally there will be blip for a couple of weeks in summer when I take my holidays and I can make on the exchange rate to pay for my trip ... wishful thinking! As always space is running short but I hope you have enjoyed some of my wishes for 2015. I do hope that these aren’t taken too seriously and bring a little smile to people’s faces. Thailand, and Pattaya in particular, is a great place to live and most of us know this but we are allowed to have a little bit of fun about it sometimes, too! 5 The roads improve The past 18 months has seen a vast improvement in the state of the roads in Pattaya and this has been very welcome for those of us who are often the passenger on the back of a motorbike taxi. There is still a lot of work to be done but City Hall should be applauded for their efforts so far and let’s hope that it continues. Not only is it a big improvement for people’s comfort, the upkeep of their vehicles, but also vastly reduces the number of accidents – surely this is a good thing?

Perfect timing for film about cyber terrorists

ith the massive hack of Sony Pictures late last year, cyber terrorism is now very much in the public spotlight. That makes the current release of Michael Mann’s new film, Blackhat, a thriller about a master hacker on the trail of a cyber-terrorist about as timely a movie release as you could want. Aussie hunk Chris Hemsworth plays Nick Hathaway, a computer genius whose hacking skills are so valuable that his prison sentence is commuted in exchange for helping track down a cyber-terrorist who has been wreaking havoc on banks, power grids, and other computer networks around the world. “Math and computer science are totally foreign subjects to me, that’s why I have to rely on acting,” Hemsworth smiles. “I prepared for this film as hard as I have for any film in terms of doing research on hacking and cyber-crime. You quickly see how dangerous this kind of thing can be when it’s possible to shut down power grids or blow up nuclear plants by someone sitting at a computer. That’s the kind of reality we’re facing.” The story opens with a malware attack on a Chinese nuclear facility that leads an MIT-trained Chinese military security specialist (Wang

Leehom) to enlist the help of his former computer whiz college roommate (Hemsworth) in tracking down the culprit behind the attack. Nick (Hemsworth) and a female ally (Wei Tang) then embark on a hunt that takes them to Jakarta, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. Hemsworth studied computer coding, met some of the world’s most notorious hackers prior to working on the film, and immersed himself in the way highly destructive malware and similar computer programmes can be launched against corporations as well as the highest levels of government. Notorious virus Director Michael Mann (The Insider, Miami Vice) was inspired to make the film after the notorious “Stuxnet” computer virus that Israeli cyber teams used to attack an Iranian nuclear facility that nearly destroyed it. The title of the film takes its name from so-called “Black Hat” hackers who use the internet to launch malicious attacks on computer systems and otherwise subvert the peaceful use of the web. There’s even an annual Las Vegas Black Hat convention where the world’s top hackers and internet security specialists meet to trade information and explore the latest advances in this highly arcane field.

Chris Hemsworth, 31, grew up in Australia and is best known for playing Thor in The Avengers and Thor: The Dark World as well as race car driver James Hunt in Rush. Later this year Hemsworth re-teams with Rush director Ron Howard in the action/adventure film In the Heart of the Sea about a 19th century whaling ship that is attacked by a sperm whale that leaves its crew adrift. In a few months’ time, Hemsworth will return as Thor in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Hemsworth lives most of the year in Malibu, California with his wife, Spanish actress Elsa Patacky (Fast Five, Furious 6), their two-year-old baby daughter, India Rose, and ninemonth old twin boys, Tristan and Sasha. He got his acting break in the Aussie soap Home and Away. Chris has an older acting brother, Luke, 33, and a younger one, Liam, 24. The Interview People: You’re the proud father of three children, including twin boys. Are you happy to be raising a big family? Chris Hemsworth: It’s the greatest experience you can have. I’m having so much fun with the twins, and my wife and I are just really happy and enjoying this time in our lives. We’re also planning to get back to Australia more often and


Changed perspective? TIP: How has fatherhood changed your perspective on things? CH: Your life becomes much more focused and you don’t have as much time to get distracted by unimportant things anymore. You become a lot less selfish and you’re suddenly thinking almost exclusively in terms of creating the best possible

life for you wife and children. But I don’t feel I’m giving up anything or making any sacrifices. I had my share of wild times when I was younger and that kind of stuff was never that interesting for me anyway. When I met my wife I was very comfortable with the idea that she was someone I wanted to share my life with and build something for the future. TIP: Let’s talk about your new film, Blackhat. You spent several months researching computer science and hacking. Could you get into some mischief as an amateur hacker? CH: (Laughs) I learnt a lot from some very smart people who taught me things that are way beyond me. I think I can look very convincing typing away on a keyboard, but I’m not going to be able to hack into your email or bank account, not would I want to, either! (Laughs) TIP: Does it require intense dedication to be a hacker? CH: You’ve got to spend thousands of hours at it and also be very smart to understand complex coding to even begin to understand the process. It’s an exhausting occupation and it requires incredible concentration as well as patience in order to get past high security firewalls and hack into systems. It’s a completely different mindset but that’s what made it interesting.

TIP: Was it a challenge to play someone with these very unique skills? CH: I thrive on being able to step into head of a character like Nick who spends his time exploring this world that very few people can understand or do the kind of things he’s capable of. It’s fascinating to learn how these people think and how they have a certain swagger because of their abilities to penetrate supposedly secure computer networks and how they laugh at people or organizations who think their systems are secure. They’re not! (Laughs) The internet is very porous and it’s kind of frightening. Information you think is safe and secret is absolutely not the case. These hackers can get into your phone and computer anytime they want. They can even switch on your phone’s camera and look at you or what you’re looking at. Strangest hackers TIP: What were some of the strangest hackers you met? CH: There was this one guy who hacked into a dating site and was able to discover exactly the kinds of things women were looking for in male profiles. make sure our children spend a lot of time there growing up. It’s a beautiful place to be able to raise children and I want that to be part of their upbringing. TIP: Your career is exploding right now with your Avengers franchise as Thor and the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron. Is it becoming harder to balance work with your increasing family responsibilities? CH: I’m more conscious of leaving enough time between projects to be at home with my wife and our children. I’m also fortunate in that Else is totally supportive of me and knows that this is a very important time for me as an actor and she understands if I have to go away for three or four months. But we also make sure we spend as much time together as possible and I am very conscious of my responsibilities as a father and I love my wife and children more than I can possibly describe.

went from having one coffee date a week to having ten dates a day simply by hacking into the system. TIP: Michael Mann is one of Hollywood’s most important directors. How would you describe your experience working with him? CH: It was incredible. Some of the top ten favourite movies of mine like Heat and Last of the Mohicans were directed by Michael. To work with someone whose attention to detail and precision is very intimidating. It’s a luxury to be able to work with a filmmaker of that caliber and who knows everything about the world you’re exploring and all the details that help tell the story. Look back TIP: Do you ever look back at your success and wonder how you’ve been able to get to this point when you consider that you grew up in the Australian Outback? CH: I could just as easily have become a beach bum. Or a footballer. My mates would laugh at me when I was a teenager. Each week I had a different goal. I’m going to be a doctor! Then the next week: I’m going to be a boxer! If I look back on it, what was the common thread? I don’t know, but I knew I was going to be moving forward.

TIP: Your brothers Liam and Luke are also actors. Any rivalry among you three? CH: No. We all look out for each other...I’ve always made sure that I get to spend some time with my brothers somewhere around the world. I’ve also been really fortunate to have had a big brother like Luke. He carried me on his shoulders when I was starting out in the business. He’s helped me enormously over the years and without his help I doubt whether I would have succeeded as much as I have. It helps to have someone like that explaining the ropes to you. And now, several years down the road, it’s been my turn to help my little brother Liam make his way in Hollywood. TIP: Your wife is Spanish. Do you ever speak Spanish to her? CH: (Laughs) I’m trying to learn the language and I hope to be more fluent in another year or so....My Spanish is so horrible that I can’t even understand her when she’s angry with me and yelling at me in her native language. I can’t understand a word and that’s probably a good thing! (Laughs) But at least I’ve learnt a very important Spanish phrase which helps calm things down. “Si, mi amor!” (Yes, my love!) (Laughs) Saying “Si, mi amor” is enough to cool things down between us when

we’re having one of those typical husband-wife moments. (Smiles) TIP: What about your kids – are they going to learn Spanish? CH: Our daughter already speaks Spanish and our twins are also going to be fluent in both English and Spanish. Maybe I’m going to have to raise my Spanish level! (Laughs) Give me another year. I do love Spain. We travel there as much as we can to visit Elsa’s family. Different places TIP: Would you like your children to be able to travel a lot given your Spanish and Australian family connections and your work as an actor which will often take you to different places around the world? CH: I think traveling and getting to know the world is very important, especially for kids. I grew up on cattle and buffalo stations in the Northern Territory and then my family and I moved back to Melbourne and then down the coast. Those kinds of experiences helped shape me and my brothers’ way of looking at the world and making us more adventurous. Traveling, meeting different kinds of people and exploring different places will teach you more about life than you can pick up from reading books. I want my kids to be able to have similar kinds of experiences. |

Bikers of both the pedal-powered and engine-powered variety will gather in Pattaya during February for two popular social events. The first is Pattaya Family Bike Day on February 7 when bike riders will gather at the Thai Polo and Equestrian Club, Huay Yai, where there will be an off-road ride for everyone. There will be a short trail for young children, 8km ride for older children, a 15km and a 30km ride. The afternoon event will end with a sunset buffet dinner. Food and beverage stalls, children’s activities and sponsors’ displays will be a feature throughout the afternoon and proceeds will be donated to Women With a Mission and Make A Wish Foundation Thailand. Bike week Big bikers will converge on the National Indoor Sports Stadium on Soi Chaiyapreuk 2 in East Pattaya on February 13-14 when the annual Burapha Bike Week comes to town. y oldest friend died last week. On continuous oxygen for the past three years as smoking had ruined his lungs. He was pleased to die. Wheezing and gasping 24/7 is not fun. Quality of life? Zero! I have written before about the difficulties involved in giving up cigarettes. From the outset, I will state that it is not easy. So if you are an ‘easy way out’ sort of person, then don’t read any further, but make sure your life insurance is up to date. You will be paying an extra premium as a smoker – ever wondered why? By the way, dying from lung cancer, like the cowboy in the cigarette advert did, is not a fun way to go! My friend would have told you. Smokers are not creatures of habit, smokers are people caught in the clutches of addiction. A prime example is one of my friends who is on a vigorous exercise regimen and vegetarian diet as he wants to get

Hop onto the internet and you are besieged with offers, all of which will make it ‘easy’ for you to stop smoking, and all of which will cost you money! Let me state again, it ain’t easy! More addictive What you have to realise is that Nicotine is more addictive than heroin. I know that’s probably hard to believe, but that really is the crux of the matter. You take Nicotine into all of your metabolic pathways until you “need” to have Nicotine to be able to function. Nicotine becomes part of your metabolic chemical chains, and

they don’t work properly without it. Now you can see just why you feel so dreadful when you go without cigarettes (nicotine) for any period of time. So how to give up? Cold Turkey, I’m afraid. The proof is in the numbers. There has been enough research done and the prime factor is that the quitter has to be committed to the concept of becoming a non-smoker. Doing it (quitting) for somebody else, because you lost a bet, because you are being nagged into it by your wife, girlfriend, boyfriend is doomed to failure, I am afraid. This is something which requires your total commitment. It’s got to be 100 per cent all the way. I admit that those who go cold turkey may go through a rough time with withdrawals initially, but the majority are still nonsmokers after one year. The same cannot be said for the others. The “hard” way is ultimately the best way. |

Thailand’s oldest race driver shares secrets

D

riving race cars is usually thought of as a young man’s sport, but there are a few ‘senior’ drivers around the world who can challenge that idea, and I am pleased to count myself as one of them. I am completely involved in my sport, and get annoyed when people refer to motor racing as my hobby. “It’s more than a hobby – it’s a passion.” I began motor racing in 1965 in a 10-year-old MGA bought on hire purchase. This meant I had to compete under an assumed name and chose “Ian Gordon” as my alias.

Won a fiver I am also proud of the fact that “Ian Gordon” came third on his first race and won five pounds (approx Bt250)! This was on the Lowood circuit in Queensland, Australia, a track that has since been lost to a housing development. The thought that I have probably raced at more tracks that no longer exist than any other current driver always makes me smile. Since then, during 50 years on

the track, I have raced everything and anything, from Formula Ford to Formula 5000 open wheelers winning many accolades on the way. Now I race a 1973 Mk1 Ford Escort in the Retro class, surprising the other drivers with its speed and the driver’s determination! This was only made possible with the backing of the TBX barter company and Kevin Fisher’s (CEA and CES) companies. Of course, there are other major sponsors who have helped keep the Escort on the track, and the driver in the seat, and these include David Nardone (Hemaraj), Peter Papanikitas (Stonefish Wines), and Henk Kiks (B-Quik), along with minor (but important) sponsors such as Peter Malhotra (Pattaya Mail), Peter Smith (AA Insurances), Terry Wilson (AVO Turbos), Royal Cliff Hotels, and Thomas Raldorf (CEA’s number 1 driver). This Mk1 was originally built in Thailand in 1973, surprising many people who did not know that Ford had a presence here in Thailand all those years ago.
