he end of the year provides the ideal opportunity to examine how the choices made over the past 12 months have contributed to where we are today. For the paint professional, the scope of choices range from adopting new technology and how often you meet with your team to marketing your business and selecting products (and a million things more, if you round down). At this time, it is worth taking note of the areas that cost you time, money, or mental energy—then searching for ways to get better results. Like you, inPAINT is constantly striving to up its game. Toward that end, we will begin publishing seven issues of the magazine a year, along with its corresponding e-newsletter, getting even more valuable content to our readers with this extra issue. Also, we’ll introduce a new editorial board with our next issue. We are deeply grateful to the members of our 2017 board listed on the right and thank them for their input and insight. In addition, we appreciate all the experts who took the time to contribute to this issue. T When MASS MoCA debuted James Turrell’s Perfectly Clear, the centerpiece of a Turrell retrospective installation Into the Light in North Adams, MA on May 28, 2017, they made sure they had plenty of touch-up paint on hand for the weeks and months that would follow. A two-story installation that visitors actually ascend into, the work features an expansive chamber with curved corners that make it hard to discern where the floors, walls and ceiling begin and end. Light inside the walls lends a color-changing glow to the space and helps to blur the visual cues that typically ground you in a space. According to Deputy Director and COO Larry Smallwood, every surface of the space is coated with Rosco Supersaturated White paint. The vinyl acrylic coating is often used on set designs and projection screens. “The challenge,” Smallwood said, “is that you don’t usually have people walking on what’s akin to ceiling paint.” While visitors to the exhibit are required to wear protective booties, they still leave their mark. “We do touch-ups twice a week,” he said, noting the work gets done after hours and requires some basic prep, cleaning, spraying, and a good bit of blending up the walls. “A lot of people might not realize the level of care and maintenance required by an extremely popular installation like this,” said Smallwood. “With reservations for this limitedadmission work stretching out weeks and months in advance, we want to keep it looking pristine.” The exhibit is slated to stay on display at least through 2018, meaning the museum will be looking to order more paint for some time to come. dirt. But in recent years, dirt was in short supply. What wasn’t in short supply was the 9,000 gallons of paint collected at the county’s hazardous waste facility. Working with LSC Environmental Products, LLC, the county’s Solid Waste Management team developed a plan to create a more durable cover for the trash mound by mixing the available paint with a slurry. After a 90-day test, the landfill implemented the approved paint-cover strategy using a hydroseeder. In the first year of the program, the facility used 3,800 gallons of latex paint in the slurry and saved $11,300 in disposal fees in the process. In addition, Mesa County Solid Waste Management was awarded the Program Innovation Award by the North American Hazardous Materials Management Association.

CONSTRUCTION PROS LAG IN TECH ADOPTION

It’s Slow Growing for Deck and Patio Construction

When it comes to adopting digital technology, highly labor-intensive and localized industries such as construction, leisure and hospitality tend to rank lower in tech adoption—most notably in the ways they conduct customer transactions.

According to a report from IBISWorld, profit margins for deck and patio construction are expected to expand only slightly in the near future.

Going Digital:

WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE IT WORK

F

rom accounting and scheduling to communicating with customers and keeping crews on track, digital technology has the potential to improve and streamline virtually every aspect of any business. However, according to Tom Droste, CEO of Logical Engine, only about 25% of the paint companies he deals with have a substantial amount of automation. “Even the smallest amount of automation can be a real game changer for a business,” says Droste. “The right system can save you time and money; improve your overall organization; and make the work experience better for everyone.”

Implementation is key According to Droste, the biggest hurdle a business owner has to clear to begin going digital is inertia. “People don’t like change,” he says. “And sometimes the people who work for those people like it even less. But, if you’re going to grow your business, you’re going to have to change. The key is to do it in a manner that’s positive and encourages buy-in from team members.” David Chism of marketing management company A David Creation agrees. A key part of Chism’s business is helping small contractors make smart tech decisions and assisting with the execution of those plans. “By virtue of spending more time on computers and systems, office staff tend to be a bit more tech savvy than paint guys,” says Chism. He recommends first letting a few of the office staff try out the system before introducing it to crews. He advises, “Give them 60 to 90 days to try it out and make sure you keep checking in and reminding them how this change is going to improve systems and make their jobs easier.”

Attitude is everything Chism advises business owners to avoid soft phrasing when it comes to change. “Saying ‘we’re thinking about a change’ is just asking for trouble,” he says. “It’s better to communicate that you’re making the change, here’s why, and here’s when.”

He adds, “You want to set a hard and fast implementation date, share it, and note that all other systems will be shut off at that time.” He also suggests you enlist the internal folks who participated in the 60- to 90-day trial period to seek out the tech-savvy guys in the field and help spread the word. “It’s usually pretty easy to spot the guys who like technology,” he says, “They’re the ones who use their phones for everything and have the coolest apps. Find those guys and make sure they understand how to use the system, then encourage them to show others why it’s worth their time to get on board.”

Plan for success Asked what mistakes he sees companies make when implementing technology, Droste stated that a failure to allocate enough time for implementation is common. “You have to realize that learning how to integrate a new system is going to take more time than the normal workday. You have to plan for that. If all goes well, you’ll make up that time—and then some—very shortly.” Chism cites ‘biting off more than you can chew’ as a common mistake he sees. “Baby steps is a fine approach,” he says. “Just because you bought the whole package doesn’t mean you have to implement it all at once. Take on what’s needed—no matter how mundane— find some success, share that success, and keep moving forward.”

Streamline processes & save time using tech 0 Estimates and invoicing: Create estimates on the spot and issue invoices with the click of a button. 0 Job management: Track every detail of every job and make them available to every member of your team 24/7.

Get the support you need Chism notes that when choosing a system or software, support should be near the top of your list of must-haves. “Different companies offer different types of support,” he says. “Some offer instant chat support, others get you answers in a few hours. Make sure you know what you’re getting and for how long. And by all means, use it.” Dec 2017/Jan 2018 | inPAINT

COLOR TRENDS 2018

BY JIM WILLIAMS

WHAT'S NEW, WHAT'S NEXT Each year, the major players in the coating industry tap into the country’s color consciousness to predict and inform design and color choices for professional customers. How they present those colors varies as dramatically as the colors they predict, from singular Colors of the Year to extensive multicolored palettes. Here’s a look, by manufacturer, at the colors you’ll be seeing in 2018 and the inspiration behind them. 12

inPAINT | Dec 2017/Jan 2018

Behr Erika Woelfel, Behr’s VP of color and creative services, is thrilled to announce the company’s 2018 Color Trends palette, a selection of 20 new colors the company predicts will command the home decor and paint industry in the new year. Woelfel says, “This palette is a reflection of the hues and styles both consumers and professionals will see in the coming months.” She notes that the company “... also introduced our first-ever Color of the Year, In the Moment T18-15, which is a tranquil, spruce blue.” Woelfel says more and more homeowners make color decisions based on the mood or feeling they want a room to evoke. “For example, using light colors to open up a room and impart a sense of calm—or infusing bright, saturated accents to create a stimulating energy in spaces where you entertain family and friends,” she said. “This palette was created with that in mind. The four beautiful new blues work to create a sense of relaxation, and the selection of darker, more complex hues will feel protective. While the palette does include some more daring hues, it also includes subtle neutrals, such as Quiet Time T18-19 and Soft Focus T18-09, which may be more appealing to professional painters in search of versatile base colors.” Speaking of versatile, Woelfel adds that In the Moment is a usable blue-green that works well in many different spaces, from front doors to kitchens to bedrooms, and even furniture. Behr’s color inspiration? “Each year, our team is inspired by what’s happening in the world around us and how color comes to life in new ways—in fashion, pop culture, travel, the world of design, and more,” Woelfel said. “We spend months imagining a palette filled with colors that will reflect what’s to come, and attend conferences and home shows here and internationally to gain a deep understanding of what’s happening across the residential and commercial decor and design industry. “This year, we were specifically drawn to lifestyle trends of awareness, mindful living, and the Danish concept of hygge—the feeling of cozy, comfortable conviviality and well-being,” Woelfel said. “People are organizing and decluttering to prioritize experiences over material items. They’re keeping only the things that make them happy, including using colors that bring them joy. We also take into account industry trends, professional preferences, and consumer likings

to ensure our Color Trends are fresh and new. On the commercial side, we’re also seeing shifts as people begin to use their spaces differently, which has caused residential and commercial design to become more closely intertwined.” Benjamin Moore The Color & Design team at Benjamin Moore literally traveled around the world in preparation for the company’s 2018 Color of the Year selection. Their journey took them to 12 countries, 30 cities, and more than 20 industry shows in search of points of inspiration from various industries, which included the arts, design, architecture, pop culture, fashion, and home furnishings. Based on their findings, the team selected Caliente AF-290 as the 2018 Color of the Year. Said Ellen O’Neill, the company’s director of strategic design intelligence, in making the announcement: “It is the signature color of a modern architectural masterpiece; it’s a lush carpet rolled out for a grand arrival; the assured backdrop for a booklined library; a powerful first impression on a glossy front door. The eye can’t help but follow its bold strokes.” O’Neill said the company’s Color of the Year and Color Trends celebrate what the team identifies as relevant in interior design around the world. However, the use of the color in design varies from region to region—for example, whether the color is used on all four walls of a room vs. incorporating smaller accents. “Caliente is a vibrant, charismatic red that has great coverage,” O’Neill said. “But it is worth noting that whenever you are making a drastic color change, use the suggested primer or foundation coat to ensure complete coverage. If no specific foundation coat is specified, a graytinted primer can help ensure a smooth transition.”

CLOCKWISE FROM BOTTOM LEFT: CALIENTE BY BENJAMIN-MOORE; IN THE MOMENT BY BEHR; AND AN EXAMPLE FROM DUNN-EDWARDS' PALETTE CHILDHOOD JOYS

Dunn-Edwards Paints Sara McLean, Dunn-Edwards’ color expert, says her company has embraced five major color trends/ stories in 2018, the first being highly stylized, and steeped in luxury and romanticism. “Our trend story, Memories, highlights key past architectural and fashion eras trending again, Dec 2017/Jan 2018 | inPAINT

including the Art Deco era, French fashion circa 1940s–1950s, and even baroque design,” McLean explained. “Memories’ colors are chic and sophisticated with notes of feminine baroque and French nostalgia. Blue-greens, lacquer red, dark-brown wood tones and bronzed caramel are lightened with touches of grayish pink and gold. Iridescent finishes add drama.” McLean said the company’s second trend, Natural Wonders, focuses on back to basics, highlighting the health and wellness industry. “This color palette is sun-drenched and lightinfused in a rich range of warm neutrals. Influences of casual springtime, seaside coral, and aquatic blue highlight the palette. Heathered, matte and softened finishes add natural depth.” The third trend, said McLean, is The Stars, which features the influence of technology through virtual and augmented realities. “It is an exotic palette inspired by the natural-unnatural coloring of the technology world. Glossy pastels, 1980s retro hues and touches of street art color accentuate hot pink, dark blue, and a range of dense colors,” McLean said. “Our fourth trend, which we call Adventures, provides a platform to highlight the continued trend of global travel and design, providing insight to creating a place filled with personal stories of adventures and lessons. Collections are from undetermined origin, creating a magical, luxurious Bohemian space.” McLean says those colors are dense, lush and exotic with fusions of emerald, red, amber and mystic purple. “Under-the-earth color highlights include lava, volcanic rock, and gemstones. Deep, murky nighttime sky colors add depth,” she said. The fifth, says McLean, is Childhood Joys, which is fun and simple with charming details, focused on making everyday life better and easier. “This color palette is filled with chic, sophisticated basics and classics of navy, burgundy, gray and beige with near-primaries such as orange and green,” McLean said. “Scandinavian design influences, whether high-tech or natural, infuse strong details. Overall, it’s inspired by childlike atmospheres.” PPG Paints PPG’s Color of the Year might surprise some professionals, explained Dee Schlotter, senior color marketing manager. “Professional painters may start to notice consumers’ increasing interest in untraditional neutrals like PPG’s 2018 Color of the Year, Black Flame (PPG1043-7),” Schlotter said. “This statement-making black is infused with an undertone of the deepest indigo, which evokes

the privacy, hope and classic modernism that many consumers crave today.” Schlotter notes that today’s society is facing overstimulation. Black Flame offers a comforting retreat, and a chance to start new. “The color black is an anchor in design, meaning it grounds other complementing colors and decor items,” she said. “Whether it’s an interior door, trim, accent wall, cabinets or staircase, this black helps to provide that necessary color to make the room feel designed. This single color is the anchor color in the broader 2018 PPG Global Color Trends palettes, which encompasses four themes that connect and resonate with current consumer mind-sets.

OCEANSIDE BY SHERWIN-WILLIAMS

Schlotter said Black Flame is a departure from the past, where there has been a vibrancy and whimsical annotation to key tones, but that black offers fortitude and provides a feeling of privacy and protection amongst a current feeling of restlessness. “It represents consumers’ collective somber mood; however, black is not necessarily a negative color; it represents strength and retreat, and is considered a power color. “While black in decor is a bold statement that implies a bit of edge, at its core, black is a classic hue that pairs well with almost anything and adds sophistication to any space,” she said. “Pair this hue with trending copper accents, pale aqua velvet, clean marble, geometric patterns, or pale woods.” Sherwin-Williams The roar of the surf gives way to the subtleties of the sea in the Sherwin-Williams 2018 Color of the Year, Oceanside SW 6496. “Oceanside is a harmonious balance of blues and greens that can be found in what’s old and new,” explained Sue Wadden, director of color marketing for the company. “It is a perfect color for 2018, reflecting our growing sense of adventure and desire to bring that feeling into even the coziest corners of our home.” Wadden and a global team of color and design experts traveled the world researching key trend drivers in home decor, fashion and design that helped determine the company’s Color of the Year.

UNEXPECTED TREND “Oceanside’s multidimensional, marine-inspired look can create a welcoming statement as a lively color for a front door,” Wadden said. “Its green-meets-blue tone can also boost creative thinking and clarity of thought in a home office.” Pro advice While some pros avoid participating in the color selection process, Schlotter thinks there’s a real opportunity to use color trends to help streamline the selection process and boost customer confidence. “Pros can offer an added service to the customer by helping them select a color,” she said. “In suggesting trends or validating their selection by recognizing the ranking of the colors chosen, painters can offer valuable support to homeowners overwhelmed in the color selection process. Wadden suggests, “In a kitchen or bathroom, help your customer achieve harmony by pairing traditional colors like white, black, navy and gray on cabinetry or fixtures with a gorgeous complementary color for the wall, rather than matching hues.” Schlotter adds, “And with the opportunity to draw from industry trend reports like the PPG Paints 2018 Global Color Trends Palette, painters can offer yet another level of expertise in the industry. -

While color experts have a pretty good pulse on emerging color trends, on occasion, a breakout color takes them by surprise. For Erika Woelfel of Behr, the unexpected popular color is pink. Woelfel said they’ve been most surprised by the increasing interest in mauve and pink shades over the past few years. “You’ve probably seen the surge in popularity of ‘millennial pink’ over the past year— it has miraculously become a sort of ‘new neutral!’ We’re embracing it, and included Positively Pink T18-01, a balance between rose and apricot, in the 2018 Color Trends palette.”

Testimonial videos are a useful marketing tool for Danny Arey, who heads up Arey Painting in Salisbury, MD. It’s a low-cost tactic too. He shoots the videos with his phone, then uploads them to YouTube and his website for prospective customers to see. Arey credits Steve Burnett of DYB Coach with the idea. But to get the testimonials, he says, you must first give the customer an excellent experience. “Create an amazing experience for someone by doing everything you say you will do, and when you have the opportunity to do more, do it,” he says. “Go above and beyond their expectation to create a raving fan!” He also keeps the process easy for people by asking three simple questions. “It can take as little as 30 seconds, but most wind up being two to three minutes long.” Testimonials, Arey says, build trust. “When people visit your site and they see someone they know, you’re more likely to get the job,” he adds. “That just recently happened to me—a woman saw someone she knew on my site, and that’s why she went with me.”

Men in White Painting, LLC, a full-service residential and commercial painting company in southern Illinois brought creativity and deliciousness together for a fun marketing idea. Borrowing from a Florida painter, owner Mark Black offers gourmet cookies as a customer thank you at the end of a job. He hired a local private baker to create the one-of-a-kind recipe, and the cookies are presented in a paint can with a creative custom label, which Black’s office staff puts together. Playing off a paint label, his custom label includes recommended uses (sharing with friends and family), preparation (prime with milk for optimum performance) and cautions (may be addictive if swallowed). The gourmet cookies, which are nearly the circumference of a standard paint can, are baked fresh each week and packaged in a way that shows time and love have been invested, he says. “In a small town like ours, they’ve become quite famous,” Black notes. “People want these cookies … it’s been a great marketing tool for us.”

3 PETE MARTIN:

Pete Martin the Painter, a residential painting company in Gloucester, MA, gets jobs from three main sources: online search, word of mouth, and his lawn signs, which he puts in yards as he’s doing a job. “Most new customers are coming from the lawn signs,” he says. He has five lawn signs ($20/each), and he’s earned a hefty return on that $100 investment. “There was a woman who jogged by one of my signs,” he recalls. “She hired me for two jobs, then referred me to a friend. That one lawn sign got me many thousands of dollars worth of work.” To make sure your sign does its job, Martin recommends simplicity. “I’ve seen signs with 10,000 things that no one can read. Or they’re written in cursive, which no one can read,” he says. Make sure your name and contact information are visible and legible. “Even if they’re driving by, people should be able to read your name and look you up when they get home,” he adds.

For Doug Imhoff, owner of Imhoff Painting Company, Facebook helps him reach residential painting customers in Denver, as well as industry pros. “I think of it as brand support,” he says. “Part of the reason I’m posting on Facebook is because that’s where a lot of people are.” He’s still experimenting with content. He uses his business page to post photos of projects, how-to and testimonial videos, as well as project walk-through videos, meet-the-employee posts, and general information to help connect with customers and potential customers. How-tos get good traction, he says. Also popular? Posts about mistakes they’ve made and how they’ve gone about fixing the problem. Imhoff says Facebook is a long game—cultivating interest and a community—not about filling up his calendar for next week. “You never know when someone is going to see something and pass it on or refer someone.” One last tip? Stay above the fray, he says. “I focus on inspiration, education, maybe something funny—nothing below the belt.” -

THE inPAINT INTERVIEW REMODELER

High-end professional remodeling projects BY MEGHANN FINN SEPULVEDA DESIGNING THE PERFECT SPACE, HIRING THE MOST SKILLED AND QUALIFIED INDUSTRY PARTNERS

Judy Mozen, founder and president of Handcrafted Homes, Inc., has been designing, constructing and remodeling high-end residential homes in Atlanta, GA since 1976. The award-winning remodeling business, which is expected to gross $2.1 million this year, has a team of eight employees and is currently managing seven projects. Mozen sets high expectations for industry partners while providing exceptional service to her clients. BY MEGHANN FINN SEPULVEDA

How has the nature of remodeling work changed through the years? A: Remodeling has now become an occupation— more of a science—that is geared toward professionals who hold specific certifications. Remodeling professionals today are more focused on offering a full range of services to effectively manage their business. Not only do certified remodelers possess professional knowledge, but they are licensed and have insurance coverage, which comes as a relief to those who want to hire a pro to complete a residential remodel project.

Q

Do you see any emerging trends or opportunities? A: We’re learning that remodeling is beginning to dominate over new construction. We’re seeing more people aged 55 and older who want to stay in their homes and age in place. This means remodelers like myself are being asked to create safer home environ-

ments for these homeowners who wish to adjust countertop and appliance heights, and develop wheelchair-accessible spaces. From a design perspective, shades of white and gray continue to be popular paint choices among many consumers, who are also requesting ceiling beams to add a rustic and more sophisticated feel to their homes. What’s the nature of your company’s relationship with painters? A: It’s especially important that pros are upfront about their expectations and are transparent in all communications. I treat my industry partners with respect and they are kept to the highest regard. I expect the same in return. This means I need to be made aware of any changes in the schedule so I can alert my client in advance. For example, if a paint pro was held up on a job due to weather or another unforeseen event, it’s important that I know about that as soon as possible, if it affects my project schedule. While I work closely with a few regular pros, I am willing to try someone new. I hire contractors who have the appropriate skills for the job and share the same high level of quality as I do. Ultimately, we are partners on the same team.

Q

How involved is the paint contractor in product and color selection? A: I always like to hear tips and advice from paint contractors regarding technique and what has worked well on other jobs, which may be applicable to my client. While I do not ask for input on color selections, since that is determined by the client, I do lean on paint contractors to provide paint samples in a timely manner, specifically in advance of a job.

Q

What are the terms of payment? A: We work together to determine a payment schedule in advance, which is usually based on how often

I bill my client, and then it’s added to the proposal. I try to be sensitive to the contractor’s needs and flexible, so the process goes smoothly. What makes for a successful partnership with a paint contractor? A: First, when I am choosing a paint contractor, I always look for those who have liability insurance and workers’ compensation so I don’t have to increase rates for coverage. Because of the nature of the industry, I need contractors who share the same level of understanding about the importance of safety on the job. Second, attitude is key. When a painter comes in, the job is almost complete. Usually, at this point, the homeowner is exhausted but also excited that the end is near. The remodel looks beautiful and the paint is the icing on the cake. Often, painters can develop lifelong relationships with these homeowners who will most likely call them when there is another painting project. Third, it’s important that contractors are neat and always clean up after themselves. This means having a designated spot to keep all paint supplies away from children, pets and any other hazards. Empty paint cans should never be left for homeowners who then must then try to recycle or dispose of them properly. Unlike new-construction jobs, there are people and pets often living in a remodel project who need to be accommodated. My partners should be respectful of the work environment.

“… when I am choosing a paint contractor, I always look for those who have liability insurance and workers’ compensation so I don’t have to increase rates for coverage.”

Q

What are the deal breakers? A: I always check references and won’t hire a contractor if poor work was performed. I also don’t want to work with someone who says there will be an extra cost to a job after details were already discussed and agreed upon, unless the homeowner has made changes.

Q

What’s your advice to a paint contractor looking to secure more work through remodeling channels? A: I suggest paint pros ask their clients to post a review online and to social media channels to gain more exposure. I also recommend joining a national remodeling organization and look for opportunities to educate members and demonstrate ways to complete a quality paint job. Show us, tell us, and teach us how to do things. It could generate a lot of interest and result in future work.

When it comes to exterior work, fade resistance is one of the most important attributes of a coating. But how exactly do manufacturers test for fade resistance when there are only so many hours of sun in a day? For many manufacturers, the answer is EMMAQUA. Short for Equatorial Mount with Mirrors for Acceleration with Water, EMMAQUA concentrates natural sunlight via 10 highly reflective, specially coated mirrors onto painted surfaces with the intensity of approximately eight suns. Plus, the device exposes painted surfaces to the full spectrum of sunlight, making it one of the most realistic accelerated tests available. For manufacturers, this means years of product exposure can be simulated in a significantly shorter time frame.

Brush tips: HOW TO CARE FOR A PAINT BRUSH SO THAT IT MAINTAINS ITS PERFORMANCE LEVEL - Clean immediately after use using paint thinner or kerosene with bristle brushes; soap and water with nylon/polyester brushes. - Use a brush comb to clean and straighten the bristles. - Do not soak your brushes for extended periods of time or they will lose their shape. - If possible, store your brush by hanging it; never store a brush on its tips, as this will curl the working tip of the brush, rendering if useless.

Must-Do Mind Shifts [ BOTTOM LINE ] for a More Profitable Future A

s the owner of a painting business and also a business coach, I get the chance to work with painting contractors from all over the country. Without fail, the question I get asked most often is, “How can I make my business run more efficiently?” In my opinion, the key to creating long-term efficiency in operations is often a matter of shifting focus.

CHANGE YOUR FOCUS FOR SUCCESS Many pros focus solely on immediate needs. That is, what they need to get the job done today. While that approach makes for a successful day, it does nothing for how you’re going to do in two weeks or two years. You really have to shift your thinking from the immediate ‘win now’ mentality to the bigger ‘win this YEAR’ perspective. You’ve got to find ways to look beyond managing your immediate workload and start thinking about—and acting on—what you want for the future.

MUST-DO MIND SHIFTS Here are some of the areas where I commonly see paint contractors choosing immediate needs over longterm efficiency … 1. Meetings: It’s all too common for pros to say, “I don’t have time for meetings.” And, if your goal was to maximize daily or even weekly profits, I’d agree with you. But the fact of the matter is you can’t afford to not have meetings. In our company, we have 11 regular meetings. That’s right. Eleven. Why? Because in order to be successful, you need a consistent and reliable means to communicate your company vision, core values, and rules of the game. Here’s how our meetings break down: MONTHLY MEETINGS NOVEMBER

- All-company - Management

team committee - Estimating and production committee - Safety committee - Incentive

TWICE-A-MONTH MEETINGS DECEMBER

- Lead

painters - Painters and apprentices

WEEKLY MEETINGS JANUARY

- Production - Financial - Sales - Operations

and training

While that’s almost 20 hours of meetings each month, the amount of money and time saved as a result is exponential.

… find ways to look beyond managing your immediate workload and start thinking about—and acting on—what you want for the future. 2. Job Costing and KPI monitoring: Few people dispute the value of accurate job costs, but most don’t capture them due to the amount of time required for data entry and system setup. But this role MUST be incorporated into the job description of an employee (preferably someone in the office). As tedious as it sounds, this monitoring reveals a number of important things, such as what types of jobs are most profitable and which ones you should potentially move away from, and helps determine the type of jobs specific crew leaders run more profitably. FYI, for our company, tracking job costs and key performance indicators (KPIs) is not optional. It’s how our employee bonuses are determined, and accurate benchmarking is essential to the pay-for-performance program that rewards our crew leaders, project leaders, and lead painters.

STEVE TALKINGTON is the owner and president of Lancaster Painting, a residential and commercial painting business located in Turlock, CA. Successful in getting out of the day to day of his business, Steve is also a business coach for Nolan Consulting Group, based out of Philadelphia, PA, where he specializes in helping clients implement effective operating systems, training, and production management.

3. Training: ‘Hire for attitude, train for skill’ has become the rallying cry of many contractors. It’s nice in theory, but without a well-run training program, attaining the desired skill isn’t a foregone conclusion. Paid training allows you to truly hire for attitude and ensures your team is producing consistently highquality work that meets your company standards. It also sends an important message to new hires that you’re serious about their success at the company.

PRACTICE MAKES PROGRESS None of these must-dos will work perfectly the first time. Your meetings may start off clunky and job costs lack accuracy. But be patient. As IBM CEO Ginni Rometty says, “Growth and comfort do not coexist.” Dec 2017/Jan 2018 | inPAINT
