It will also impress cost-conscious homebuyers and potentially enhance your home’s market value if you decide to sell.

TOP 6 ENGERY-SAVING HOME IMPROVEMENTS: Windows/Doors $$$$ Replace single-pane windows with dual-pane models that have high-performance glass. New technologies can cut your heating and cooling costs by 10 percent to 25 percent. (1) Water Heating $$$$ Replacing older units with Energy Star models saves an average of $76 per year; tankless water heaters cost more but deliver up to 30 percent more savings than standard natural gas units. ou can trust a professional remodeling contractor with NARI certification to have access to the latest industry information via conventions, educational programs, meetings, trade publications and expos that feature up-to-the-minute products, materials and techniques. Only serious professionals with a real desire to excel in the industry are eligible to participate in NARI’s rigorous certification program, which teaches and tests skill sets, safety issues, and ethical business practices. When you see any of the certifications described on this page, you’ll know that the affiliated remodeling contractor or company has taken the time to meet performance and business criteria that surpass industry standards.

Certified Remodeler (CR) Designed to recognize and identify fullservice remodelers. Candidates must have a minimum of five years experience and be employed by or own a firm that derives 90 percent of its sales volume from remodeling. Certified Remodeler Associate (CRA) Recognizes individuals who actively support the remodeling industry, such as architects, designers, educators, manufacturers, publishers, suppliers and consultants. Certified Remodeler Specialist (CRS) Reserved for remodelers who specialize in a particular area of the industry, such as roofing or flooring, etc.

Master Certified Remodeler (MCR) This designation recognizes Certified Remodelers that have demonstrated commitment to the remodeling industry through support of their local chapter, NARI National, and/or their local community. The MCR identifies Certified Remodelers that have withstood the test of time and continue to be successful within the industry. Candidates must complete and submit this application for consideration by the NARI Certification Board. In addition to completing and submitting an application to qualify for the MCR certification, candidates must be a Certified Remodeler for a minimum of 10 consecutive years and hold another NARI certification. Candidates must have been involved with their local NARI chapter or NARI National and/or involvement as a leader in the local community. Candidates must submit a letter of recommendation from their chapter executive or chapter president or three letters of recommendation from recent clients. Universal Design Certified Remodeler (UDCR) This designation includes remodelers with knowledge and skills in a broad range of universal design and remodeling. Individuals with the UDCR designation are recognized as experienced remodelers with skills and knowledge in all aspects of universal design and remodeling. Candidates must complete and submit this application for consideration by the NARI Certification Board. In addition to completing and submitting an application, to qualify for the UDCR certification exam, candidates must have been in the remodeling industry for a minimum of 5 years. Candidates must also have completed a minimum of 8 hours of universal design remodeling/building related education.

Certified Lead Carpenter (CLC) Designed for lead carpenters who are skilled and knowledgeable in the technical, hands-on aspects of their work, but also have demonstrated skill and knowledge in project management, supervision and customer service. Candidates must have a minimum five years experience with at least two of those years as a lead carpenter. Companies who believe in providing a quality product will make sure their lead carpenters are trained and certified so they can produce better jobs, be more professional, run projects more efficiently, and interact more proactively with their customers. Certified Kitchen & Bath Remodeler (CKBR) This designation allows homeowners to identify contractors who do extensive work in kitchen and bath remodeling, and have gone the extra mile to improve themselves and their firm’s capabilities in these areas. The CKBR certification addresses the unique aspects of kitchen & bath design and remodeling, including technical expertise and new product knowledge. Green Certified Professional (GCP) The GCP designation is designed to recognize and identify remodelers who apply green or sustainable principles to their remodeling projects. They understand key green building concepts including energy efficiency, site management and use, indoor air quality, water conservation and the use of building materials and finishes. The GCP certification addresses how green remodeling can make homes more durable, efficient, sustainable, healthier to live in and less expensive to operate.

n important date is quickly approaching at Appliance World. They will be hosting a spectacular event to raise money and awareness for Contractors for Kids on May 3rd at 7pm. Live entertainment to dance the night away, as well as many local restaurants and corporate chefs will be showing off their culinary expertise to help the cause. This will all take place both inside and out at Appliance World of Huntington located at 414 New York Ave. Contractors for Kids is a Long Island based non-profit organization which assists families with children suffering from serious illnesses. It was co-founded by Stalco Construction’s Principal, Kevin G. Harney and President Alan Nahmias. The organization has attracted enthusiastic support from over 500 local builders, architects, real estate firms, and contractors. The story of these families in crisis has attracted generous support from businesses, communities, and individuals. Appliance World, a member of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), has partnered with Contractors for Kids. Because of Appliance World’s involvement with NARI and the partnerships they have established through this organization, working with Contractors for Kids, seems to be a perfect fit. he economic conditions of the past few years have thrown a monkey wrench into plans and dreams for so many homeowners. Unfortunately many of us have had to adjust our goals and re-plan our futures. With the real estate market in an unknown state, people are really nervous about selling their houses to buy newer, bigger homes. Many of us are making due with what we have and are “waiting out” the economy. However, many more of us are doing remodeling projects to upgrade our current homes until things get better. If you have not already done so, it may be time to re-focus and possibly re-plan. Fortunately, there are options that may actually be better than our original plans. ADDITIONS OR EXTENSIONS For those who need more space and thought the answer was to sell and buy a larger home, perhaps the solution to the space crunch is an addition or extension. This solution also works well for accommodating merging families. Just as there are many considerations in the decision to relocate or remodel, there are many factors to consider in choosing to remodel your home in order to accommodate grown children or aging parents.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER Perhaps the biggest issue in opting for extended family living is that of privacy. With the proper remodel, good communication and firm agreements, this option can have many significant financial advantages. Although the costs of running a larger

household will be more than those of a single family unit, the costs will be less than those of two separate households. AGING IN PLACE Perhaps you want to downsize or prepare for a scaled-back lifestyle or retirement of sorts. In that case you may want to prepare your home for the next phase of your life. Just because you may be retiring from your business activities certainly doesn’t mean you will be retiring from life. This may be the perfect time to make those changes in your home to suit your new lifestyle. This could include setting up a home office, hobby rooms, or even private guest quarters for visiting family and friends. Although guests won’t demand it, they will really appreciate a bedroom suite. If you are retiring and want to remain in your house, be sure to look into the many remodeling options for “aging in place.” LOCATION As you contemplate the advantages and disadvantages of moving vs. remodeling, there are definite location factors to consider. These factors will depend on a number of things including your age and the age of your children, proximity to activities that you and your family enjoy, and the neighborhood itself. If you have children in school, you may want to avoid disrupting them. This is a strong incentive for remodeling instead of moving. There may be other advantages to staying in your current home. These could range from the actual block you live on, the tranquility or busyness of the area, the proximity to transporta-

tion or even your immediate neighbors. We tend to notice those things that we don’t like, but it is equally important to not overlook the advantages to staying where we are. In making a decision, it is usually best to write down all the pluses and minuses to your current location and have your family do the same. You may find that there are significant advantages to staying in your current home. In that case, remodeling will be a better choice for you and your family. ADDING VALUE Assuming you decide to remodel instead of moving, keep in mind that a well-done renovation will add value to your home, so when the time does come to sell, your home will be worth significantly more. If a careful analysis of your living situation indicates that it is time to sell, I urge you to find a home stager to assist in the process. A good home stager will give you an honest assessment of your home, coordinate any needed repairs, assist with the rearrangement of furniture and will help in the decoration of your home for a fast sale at the best possible price. No matter how analytical our society becomes there is an emotional aspect that will never be eliminated from the purchase of a home. The first thing a new homeowner wants to do after purchasing a new home is to make it their own. This process actually begins during the first walk through as the buyer imagines themselves and their possessions in the space they are viewing. Do not assume a house’s potential, that you can clearly see, is obvious to everyone. Even an investor with a trained eye can miss the possibilities a house has to offer. Whether that house is a long-term investment bringing in rental income or a short-term investment purchased to flip, if the investor does not immediately see its cost-effective potential, he will move on to the next house. The cost to stage a home is less than the first reduction a house goes through as it sits stagnant in a market that is already flooded with inventory. his project consisted of a complete interior and exterior remodel of a ranch home, including a second floor addition. The addition had an enormous impact on the look and functional space in the home. The completed home features functional enhancements such as: two staircases, washer and dryer on both floors, central vacuum, master bedroom suite with four walk-in closets, gym, and private outdoor terrace accessible from three rooms overlooking the Great South Bay. Aesthetic elements include granite kitchen countertops and dark cherry wood cabinets, full onyx mosaic-tiled bathroom with double-sinks, and a double-sided natural gas fireplace with mounted televisions on both sides. The exterior was improved with new siding, turrets, heated pool, re-faced bulkhead, landscaping, and a three car garage.

ENTIRE HOUSE UNDER $250K Gold his homeowner wanted to remodel their existing 1954-built, Cape home. The young couple was about to get married and wished to redo their home before they moved in and started a family. The original house wasn't large enough for them but had some nice features to it as far as layout. They had concerns about making the new first floor wide open for entertaining both of their large families. They wanted the first floor to be comfortable for gatherings and also practical for their everyday living. They wanted to keep the original footprint of the home without any extensions. We drew up plans that included a new open floor plan on the first level with a kitchen, powder room, living room, and dining room with all of the rooms open to each other. The new ceilings would be nine feet high. The new second floor includes all of the bedrooms with master suite, private bathroom, walk-in closet, 2 bedrooms, and a hall bathroom. The front foyer was to be a center hall colonial look with grand ceilings all of the way up to the roof. Upon completion, the house is perfect for entertaining and has spare rooms for the new family. After a few months, the homeowners say that they love everything especially their new first floor layout and master suite. Their old style cape just became their new home.

the kitchen from the dining room. In its place a large peninsula was constructed. The light maple cabinets with “chocolate” glaze helped to open up the space. n an attempt to restore her childhood home, this homeowner and her husband proposed a renovation which would incorporate modern amenities into a life-sized keepsake of childhood memories. The new house would ideally include certain mementos from the past as well as enough space to house a design studio for the owner/artist. The three bedroom ranch was expanded to include a complete second story, a small front addition with a porch, rear additions off the garage and 3 foot rear additions for the bedrooms, as well as a sunroom. Above the garage a full artist’s studio was put in place allowing the homeowner to createfrom home. Wood planking was carefully salvaged before the remodel, and reused in the finished design. Single boards were meticulously removed and then transplanted into the finished project, both throughout the house as accents and as part of a fully paneled bathroom. Midway through the project, the client’s husband lost his job, so careful financial planning became top priority without sacrificing the integrity of the project. Through careful budgeting and strategic planning, the builder and homeowners reached the desired result despite the unexpected circumstances. In the end the clients’ new home is both a testament to the past and a beautiful space which will satisfy for many years to come.

he homeownersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; desired a new kitchen. The woman of the house was confined to a wheelchair and the present kitchen certainly did not accommodate her abilities. She found it very difficult to perform any tasks, except for ones that could be done at the kitchen table. Removing any items from the refrigerator with top mounted freezer was a challenge and retrieving anything from the oven was hazardous. She no longer enjoyed any cooking activities. Having a lower work area that could accommodate a wheelchair was her primary need. Being able to work at the sink and cook top were never previously considered by them. After consultations with both of the homeowners, a new kitchen was custom built to accommodate her needs The homeowners selected the cherry cabinets for their depth and richness of color. The natural red oak flooring offered a pleasant contrast, and accentuated the cabinets. The granite chosen had an array of earth tones that contained many shades of colors; ranging from beiges to browns to reds and black. A mixture of these colors was also used for the back splash tile. A tile pattern that featured an expanded funnel was formed to mimic the hood. The variation in the heights and depths of the cabinets and counters created a dynamic visual interest that the homeowners love. They both now enjoy preparing meals.

ur client desperately needed a screened-in porch because during the warmer weather, he could not sit outside without being eaten alive. We solved his problem by building a beautiful Ipe (Brazilian Hardwood) deck but with a section to get away from the insects and to protect him from the rain. A nice feature of this is the fact that they can go up on the second level (not at dusk) and take advantage of the excellent view they have of the golf course and small lake. PVC trim was used for all the fascia work so maintenance would be at a minimum for them. We used hidden drains behind the fascia and drainpipes ran through the columns to improve the aesthetics. We used about 12 helical piles to keep the deck from settling as this was built near the water. In this project it is what you don't see that became very important. The homeowners were so happy with the project that they invited the whole crew over for a BBQ on their new deck!

fter an electrical fire destroyed their previous home, Joanne and Ed Nusdlatt found the perfect replacement looking out on a golf course and the New York harbor channel. At roughly 5,000 square feet, with four bedrooms, and four full baths, it was almost perfect…almost. It did not have anywhere to take advantage of the outdoors and the home’s great views. “Our previous home had a screenedin porch that we liked very much,” says Ed. “We also wanted to add a deck off the home’s master bedroom upstairs to take advantage of the unbelievable views.”

CONSTRUCTION CHALLENGES “The homeowners really needed the screened-in porch so they could sit outside during dusk in warmer weather and not be bothered by insects,” says Kent

Buell, MCR, CKBR, of Kentstruction in Medford. “The two-story structure also provides protection from any rain.” Importantly, the project enhances the home’s existing aesthetics. The added structure keeps with the home’s square lines, as well as matching the white trim around all of its windows and doors. The Kentstruction team made sure the support columns would not block the home’s large sliding doors. They achieved these spans using micro-lam beams. Special attention was paid to make sure the stonework around the barbeque blends aesthetically with the home and the landscaping. The deck itself is constructed of beautiful Ipe (Brazilian hardwood) which was stained a rich, dark color to contrast with the white PVC trim. The entire deck perimeter, screen-in porch, and all columns are trimmed in Azek PVC trim and all balusters for the railing were individually installed. By using PVC trim for all the fascia work, homeowner maintenance is kept at a minimum. “We used hidden fasteners for the Ipe decking and handmade the decorative railing panels,” says Buell. “Keeping the symmetry and balance of the railing was a painstaking process.” Kentstruction used an innovative method to overcome the drainage for the second-floor deck. “You cannot see it, but there are gutters and leaders draining the second-floor deck,” says

Buell. “We decided to hide the gutters by recessing a channel behind the fascia. This channel got pitched and the roofing went right into it. We hid the leader pipes inside the square columns. The upper deck boards cover the gutters. So, in this case, it is what you don’t see that became important,” he says. Another challenge of this project was that all 12 supports had to have helical columns sunk into the ground to approximately 20 feet before the cement footings were poured. Because the house sits along the water, this process assures the deck won’t settle over time. SELECTING A CONTRACTOR The Nusdlatts had three contractors bid on their project and felt most comfortable with Kent Buell and his firm. “A good friend of mine in the neighborhood used them for a fairly extensive project in his own home and recommended them,” Ed says. “He was honest and true to his word.” In fact, Joanne and Ed were so happy with the project that they invited the whole building crew over for a barbeque on their new deck. verybody wants a great home. We remodel our homes to improve our kitchens, our bathrooms, our living spaces, and our quality of life. We spend a significant amount of energy planning and selecting just the right materials or design elements for our homes. Many of us have families whom we care about deeply and we work hard to provide for them and keep them happy, healthy, and safe. When most of us were in school we worked hard to get good grades. It wasn't always easy, but bringing home a report card with straight D's was not rewarded. And with good reason. Barely passing, below average, was hardly an accomplishment, and definitely not something to be proud of. In some areas, our building codes are designed to be just good enough to keep us from getting hurt. They are essentially the equivalent of a "D." However, in some cases, building codes, while still the minimum standard, may be a bit better, but it depends where you live.

When we talk about what a great home is, we should be talking about something that is a better than a "D." This is where green remodeling comes into the picture. Green remodeling and building are all about going well beyond the bare minimum to create something of quality that is healthy and safe for you and does less damage to our environment and our community. Green remodeling is really about making great spaces for your family while being responsible. However, keep in mind that different people view green in different ways. Not all green building approaches are also healthier and all healthier building practices are not green. We all know that Green remodeling is the right thing to do, and it’s probably safe to say that there aren’t any builders or remodelers who do not want to build green. So why isn’t everyone remodeling green? It is a bit of a catch 22. The problem is that construction professionals don’t think that homeowners want green, and most homeowners think construction professionals don’t want to or know how to

build green. And both parties think it costs more. Well let’s set this story straight. MYTH #1 Homeowners are not interested in Green. This is obviously not true. Organic food sales are through the roof. Target is selling bamboo shirts (which incidentally are not very green), and Ford is producing efficient hybrid vehicles. In a less than stellar economy, the growth in the sustainable and green market continues to be steady. Why? Because when we have the opportunity to have healthier, happier lives, we choose it. What you, as a homeowner, need to do is let your remodeler or designer know that you want something better than a D and ask to have your remodel certified. MYTH #2 Green is expensive. This is also not true. Data from around the country shows that to build a certified new home adds 2 percent to 3 percent to the cost of a home! Experienced green builders actually

MYTH #3 Green is too hard. For you, the homeowner, going green in remodeling is easy. Just tell your remodeler and designer you want your project to be as green as possible. That is all you have to do. For the remodeler or design professional, there is some work involved. Just like school, this requires some training and some practice. Because the secret to green remodeling is in the process and NOT the product, the planning and design stage is very important and takes additional effort to think things through and consider the impact of an action. MYTH #4 Green building is for big projects and new homes. Totally untrue! While LEED requires that you practically re-build your home, green remodeling projects of all sizes are happening all of the time; bathroom remodels, kitchen remodels, win-

show a reduction in cost overall as they become better at building better. With remodeling you can often see a reduction in project cost! Properly installed insulation and air sealing, costs nothing more, but can save energy. A green home needs a smaller heating system, which is less expensive, and often no AC is needed, which also saves money. Water-saving shower heads cost the same as regular shower heads and offer the same pleasurable experience. According to Alure Home Improvements, in East Meadow, NY, dual flush toilets use a fraction of the water and cost the same to purchase and install, saving money on water bills. About 50 percent of your water use is spent on keeping turf grass green when native grasses don’t need watering and only occasionally need mowing. Today, ultra-Low VOC paints are the same price as regular paint but are much healthier for your family, as are NoAdded-Urea-Formaldehyde-plywoods. Your biggest expense comes from the third-party inspections that green remodeling requires, but the value of having an independent audit of the performance and the project seems worth the minimal cost. Also, according to Appliance World, in Huntington, NY, energy efficient appliances save on water and energy.

According to Andersen Windows, which are sold at WindowRama, in Edgewood, NY, just replacing your windows can significantly save on energy bills, as well. MYTH #5 Green is all about energy. This may be the most commonly misunderstood part of green remodeling. The beauty of green is that it is a whole-systems way of thinking. It gives equal weight to each key concept and asks us to consider the interconnected nature of the world we live in. A systems approach means understanding that insulating the house reduces air infiltration, which means less fresh air to the occupant. We understand the link and the danger in insulating without considering occupant health. A systems approach has us ask the question about how much energy it took to make the insulation, what were the environmental impacts, and what are the impacts on the installer and the occupant when handling this material. In fact, green remodeling really starts with community and the impact on the health and well being of the people manufacturing the products, then those installing the products—and then those living with the products. Community impact and indoor environmental quality are the top concerns. Next is water, then resource efficiency (which includes durability, recycling, and embodied energy), and then finally energy efficiency. If we reduce the

quality of life of someone in India so that we can have cheap slate in our green home, we are really taking advantage of someone less fortunate, which is neither fair nor beneficial to all concerned. The straight story on green remodeling is that it is easier than you might think. It can save you money, it conserves resources, it is healthier for you and your family, and most importantly it is the right thing to do. You have the power with your next remodel to be a force for good in the world and your community. Think about how hard you worked to save for that remodeling project, do you really want to buy a ‘D’ grade project when you can have a ‘B’ or an ‘A’ home with little to no additional expense? CHOOSING THE RIGHT FLOORING

ften referred to as the “fifth wall,” your floor and how you cover it can have a big impact on any remodeling project. Floor covering can affect your project’s character, durability, and budget. Choosing flooring for your home doesn’t have to be complicated, but you do need to do your homework. The entire square footage of your home needs to be covered with some type of flooring. You need to think about how you want the room to look, how you are going to use the space, and how much you want to spend.

BUILDING CHARACTER Floor covering has a major impact on the look and feel of a room. According to Jarro Building Industries Corp., in East Meadows, NY, the type of flooring you select can help you instill a certain character in your space. For instance, if you desire a clean, modern look, the right tile might help you achieve it. A rustic or “north woods” motif can be brought to life with a wood floor. FLOORING TRENDS Flooring for your home can basically be divided into two different categories: soft-surface and hard-surface. There are many different brands and options to choose from, but basically your choices include: hardwood, laminate, vinyl, tile, cork, bamboo, carpet, and linoleum. Whatever you choose, each type has unique characteristics and advantages. Hard surfaces—more specifically, hardwood floors—are currently the top choice of most newly built or remodeled homes. Hardwood flooring is becoming more popular in many rooms that have 42

otherwise been carpeted in the past, and then area rugs are placed on top. Hardwood floors typically have a lower life cycle cost than carpet and add more value when it's time to sell the home. Other choices for hard surfaces, including ceramic tiles and laminate, are also dominating the residential flooring options, and in contrast, the carpeting trends continue to move toward softer, textured, and more luxurious styles. Area rugs not only add charm, warmth, and comfort to a space, but rugs are leading the way as the hottest decorating feature. When choosing flooring options, here are some options to choose from: HARDWOOD FLOORS Hardwood floors can add old-world elegance with modern twists, moving more toward distressed planks, wider widths, and exotic woods. Depending on how you want the room to look, hardwood flooring can be elegant or rustic. Keep in mind when you choose the kind of wood, you want it to be beautiful as well as durable. Explore the variety of finishes, colors, and wood types available. You are sure to find a look youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll like. The most popular hardwoods include oak, then maple, and ash. Specialty woods tend to be more expensive, however, they are often quite beautiful. Depending on your budget, you may want the luxurious look of specialty woods. CERAMIC TILE VS. STONE Ceramic tile and stone are very different. Stone flooring can include quarried slate, limestone, flagstone, granite, or marble. Natural stone tile is a relatively affordable alternative to stone and is made from real stone aggregate suspended in a polymer binder. Choosing the right stone tile is usually a combination of personal preference and budget considerations. Vinyl sheet flooring comes in a variety of styles from wood looks to natural stone, to patterned designs. Vinyl sheet is also durable and is an easy-to-clean floor type that can be installed anywhere in the home. It is also known for its resistance to scuffs, stains, and spills. CARPETING Once known as the most practical home flooring, carpet can bring color and warmth into every room. Your options are endless when it comes to patterns, colors, textures, and is still one of the topselling floor coverings today. You may be overwhelmed by the many choices when it comes to carpet. Wool is a popular carpeting fiber. It tends to cost more than synthetics, but it's comfortable, durable, and natural looking. Be aware that direct sunlight will fade wool fiber over time. Synthetic fibers are made from several artificial materials. Nylon is the most popular because of its durability, although it can be damaged by prolonged exposure to sunlight. There are also an increasing number of value added features available on newer carpeting. Stain resistant and odor absorbing products are becoming more and more available.

CORK FLOORING Known for its comfort to walk on, cork flooring is also very warm, and is gaining popularity among older people who are remodeling their homes while keeping â&#x20AC;&#x153;aging-in-placeâ&#x20AC;? a priority. BAMBOO FLOORS An extremely environmentally friendly hardwood, bamboo is becoming one of the most popular flooring trends. Although it is currently more popular on the west coast, it is also gaining popularity throughout the United States. Technically a grass, not a wood product, bamboo is a renewable resource that can be harvested every five years. Additionally, bamboo is actually harder than hardwood floors, which makes it a much more durable material. LAMINATE FLOORING Originally from Europe, laminate floors are practical due to its durability, hard

wearing, and beautiful options. Laminates offer stone and granite patterns for unlimited decorating possibilities. LINOLEUM Although not nearly as popular in upscale remodeling projects, linoleum was known for being environmentally friendly years ago. It is available in a large selection of colors and patterns and is suitable for any decorating solution. Linoleum is durable and environmentally friendly. It can enhance many rooms with its marbled patterns and unique designs. RUGS This versatile decorating choice can add character to any room. ALTER ECOSYSTEMS TAKES ON

UNIQUE PROJECT

JLC Landscape Services, in Farmingville, NY, recently opened its new divisionâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Alter Ecosystems Ponds and Waterfalls.

ccording to JLC Owner, Joseph Cerbone, the new division is managed by Ed Drohan, water garden specialist, and Ed has been designing, installing, and maintaining ponds for 18-plus years. Alter Ecosystems is affiliated with Aquascape, Inc. of St. Charles, ILâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;which is the largest distributor of pond-related equipment in North America. Furthermore, Ed has been a Certified Aquascape Contractor (CAC) for seven-plus years. Alter Ecosystems works primarily on the east end of Suffolk, NY, but is no stranger to traveling. Ed is presently working on a large cleaning of a system he redesigned five years ago. The original construction had only been in the ground for a year or less when Ed was called upon to re-design the entire water garden. Due to the incorrect installation, the system was disassembled and all new components were installed to create this jewel of the Hamptons. The entire re-construction took approximately one month to complete. The upper pond is 90' x 65' x 3' and it feeds down a 60' river, connecting to the lower pond, which measures at 95' x 45' x 4'. The upper pond features an arched bridge, designed and installed by a local artist/sculptor. Both ponds have a gorgeous array of Lilies, Lotus, and Koi fish.
