Dear Readers, Welcome to the first issue of ?Remember and Honor ?, a magazine serving northern Colorado veterans and veteran supporters.

A little history of what led to this magazine is in order. I have always had a deep respect and awe for what veterans did and continue to do. After I graduated from CSU, I went over to the Air Force recruiter to enlist, as my dad had served in the Air Force. Being the mid-80?s, the recruiter said there was nothing going on and he had already filled his officer slots, telling me not to go in as an enlisted man with a degree, so I considered the other options. Being a Colorado boy, I knew nothing about the sea; I was told by numerous people for some reason to never volunteer for the Army; and at the time the Marines scared the bejesus out of me. I never ended up serving and while I try to live life without regrets, never serving has always been a huge regret. A regret because of my love for this country and one of the greatest callings in life is to serve it.

Fast forward 20 years. I read an article about how the Library of Congress was starting a program to collect veterans?stories. I thought why not try and do something on the local level, so I went out and bought a video camera and started recording stories (more about this in the magazine). To date, I have preserved the stories 500+ northern Colorado veterans. It has been a fascinating and fulfilling project. I believe we collect all the facts and figures, but not nearly enough of the personal stories. This experience has since morphed into an all consuming effort to honor and assist veterans in any way I can.

This effort includes serving on the board of Honor Flight Northern Colorado, the Veterans Plaza committee, the Tribute to Veterans event committee, assisting in bringing in the old WWII birds to the airport, and attending or helping out with numerous veteran ceremonies and events. I have gotten to know the veteran community fairly well. Within this community are truly amazing stories, incredible people, and a lot of outstanding organizations doing great work on behalf of veterans. What has always lacked is a central location to bring this all together and share this information. Thus this magazine, with a mission to honor, entertain, and inform. Remember and Honor will always welcome your feedback, ideas, news, and articles, and mold it to best fit your needs and interests. Thanks for picking up this magazine today. Enjoy!

MORA L CON F L ICT A N D IT S SIL EN T IMP A CT I have heard 100?s of stories from veterans with my veteran oral history project over the years. Many recounted experiences I wouldn?t wish on my worst enemy. A common thread I have found is that for many there has been no real end to their sacrifice.

Physical wounds might be evident, but other fallout of military service is hard to see. In addition to Post-Traumatic Stress, there's another invisible condition now receiving some well-deserved attention: what the VA now recognizes as "Moral Injury?, a term coined by Dr. Brett Litz, PhD, yet one that appears unknown or misunderstood by many.

Local Health and Wellness Coach Mary Scott, Founder, Heart Scars 6, explains that moral and ethical conflicts can often result in a timeless and painful condition, and affect veterans and civilians alike.

Recalling numerous Service Members with challenging symptoms, Scott says it became clear that ?some had symptoms only of PTS? [post-traumatic stress, resulting from exposure to life-threatening events], ?while others related to none of the typical PTS symptoms? like hyper-arousal, easy startle response, hyper-vigilance? but were dealing with really intense sadness, anger, blame, guilt, decreased self-esteem, and confusion around their worth.?

?Like the Captain who had to take out some very young girls to save his men, thinking of his own little girls at home. The intelligence officer "Moral and ethical dilemmas are common in who blamed herself for acting too quickly on war, they always have been,? Scott explains. questionable intel. The driver who was late ?Accidents, unexpected loss, abuse, civilian picking up her NCO and later raped in her casualties, perceived betrayal by fellow Service sleep. The common thread I have found in all my veteran interviews is one of sacrifice in service.

They have given so much to this country, yet

many continue their sacrifice with heavy hearts--impact that can't be seen but certainly can be tended.

That is and always has been my philosophy since I started the project back in 2006. The personal stories are where it is at for me. The project was started by a perfect storm of interests. I love history, I enjoy meeting people and learning their stories, and I have a deep respect and awe for what our veterans did and continue to do.

The project actually started a few years earlier when I lived back east. I had read an article telling about how the Library of Congress was beginning a program to collect veteran stories. I thought why not try and do something on the local level, so I went out and bought a video camera and started interviewing veterans. Since then, I have interviewed 500+ N. Colorado veterans to date.

The main objective of the project is to get the veterans? stories down on permanent record (DVD) for them and their families to always have, never to be lost or forgotten. A secondary objective, only done with their permission, is to

donate a copy to their local library/museum, CSU?s Morgan Library, The National WWII Museum (if they are WWII vets), and the Library of Congress.

The interviews are partially 60 Minutes TV show, part casual conversation format and put onto a DVD in a mini-documentary style. When I first starting doing them, I thought the benefactors would be the families, who often times didn?t know their veteran?s stories. While this has proven to be true, many times now I?ve seen the benefit to the veteran by telling his/her story.

He tells the veteran that hi s fly i s open.

----The reason the Ai r Force, Arm y, Navy, and Mari nes bi cker am ong them selves i s because they don't speak the sam e language. For i nstance, here's w hat happens after they secure a bui ldi ng.

They say time heals. For some that may be true.

Sitting atop an outcrop in 2017, Tony Seahorn gazed across the distant rice fields, plantations and triple-canopy jungle. Almost 50 years earlier he stood on this same dormant volcano, Nui Ba Den, on a rescue mission in a foreign land, Vietnam. He was a communications officer with the First Infantry Division - Black Lions during 1968.

Tony chose a solo return journey so not to be distracted by others who may not have the same sense of loss and remembrance. The visions of a battle-torn country had since changed. Gone was the smell of cordite and human carnage. The land had returned to its once beautiful nature and healed more quickly than memories from the past.

Tony?s 1968 tour left him highly decorated.

Severe wounds in battle took him out of the country, waking up five days later in a hospital in Japan. He spent the next year in hospitals recovering and still endures the physical and emotional scars of combat.

Like many veterans, Tony tried to put past experiences behind him. He began what

would be a 30-year career with AT&T. ?I immersed myself in the business of work, focusing on projects and other people?s problems, not mine. When I would go home ? that?s when the dark side of me came out,? he acknowledged.

Tony eventually went through a 2-year PTSD study group in the mid-1990?s conducted at CU Medical Center in Denver that helped turn his life around.

With this renewed outlook on life, Tony co-authored a book with his wife, Janet, titled "Tears of a Warrior: A Family's Story of Combat and Living with PTSD". Tony gives his perspective as a war-torn veteran with PTSD, and Janet, who has a Ph.D. in Human Development and Organizational Systems, gives her perspective not only professionally, but also as a spouse. Their motto: "If we send them, then we must mend them."

T H E SOL D IER A N D T H E L IT T L E GIRL War is hell. A statement truly understood by few, but something WWII veteran Roy Laman knows well. Roy admits he was lucky and had it better than the frontline soldier. As an officer with the 2nd Signal Battalion, he jokes he is close enough to the frontline not to have to wear a tie, but far enough back not to be shot at. But following the war across Europe, he sees the destruction, the death and maiming, and the desperate people along the roads. I can tell in his eyes and in his voice it still bothers him very much. As he tells of his experiences, there is a 3-week period when he receives a wonderful reprieve from it all.

This period of fond memories starts when Roy?s unit pulls into Herleen, Holland to set up headquarters. He is billeted with a local family and soon becomes very close to them, particularly with one of the young daughters, Irmine. ?They were incredibly kind to me and treated me like a family member,? he recalls. One memory is going to Christmas Eve services with the family. He and Irmine play games and take walks. He brings them supplies when he can.

As the front line starts moving, it is time for Roy to move as well. While saying goodbye, he is presented a braid of hair by Irmine?s sister. She cut it off to give him a memento to remember them all by. Roy carries that braid with him across Europe. Sadly however, on the troop ship home, an outbreak of scabies requires everyone to toss their personal items overboard.

That evening in bed I can?t stop thinking about this story. I toss and turn and like many other interviews, it seeps into my dreams. Once again, by the sparkle in Roy?s eyes I can tell just how special this time is to him. When I wake up, I decide I must try and find Irmine.

Finding Irmine proves easy, a testament to the internet?s power. I don?t have her last name or an address, but I do have pictures. I find Herleen?s newspaper ?s website and send them a message asking for help. A reporter responds, saying he would be interested in the story. It?s set to run Saturday. Friday night, like the night of Roy?s interview, I toss and turn in bed. Unable to sleep, I get up and turn on the computer. With the time difference between the Netherlands and Colorado, I hope for good news. There it is? .Irmine has been found!

My box is full of emails, one being from Irmine?s neighbor Frank. He snaps a picture of her in front of that Christmas services church and emails it to me. Almost all of the emails received mention how grateful they still are for what the Americans had done. I then wait for a decent hour to call Roy and tell him the news. A wonderful correspondence then ensues. The story only gets more special when Irmine tells her side of it in a follow up article. She pulled out her wartime diary and shows the reporter an entry from Roy: (continued 14 on next page) 14

To my little darling. Of all the girls in the world, you have made me most happy. You see, I have a little darling (a special niece) back in America. While I am in Holland, you have been like that little girl. I hope you will grow up to be a grand lady like your mother. May you always be happy and stay as beautiful as you are today.

She tells of the games played and walks taken. She then recalls the time Roy announced a great general was in town. She and Roy walked hand in hand to go meet the general and she sat on his lap. As a little girl, she had no idea who General Eisenhower was.

Returning home after the war, Roy goes into the printing business, marries his lovely wife Marilyn and raises five sons. Irmine will go on to start a program that helps children in third world countries. Sadly, a few months after she and Roy reconnect, Irmine is diagnosed with a brain tumor and passed away. Two years later Roy would pass. I can?t help but think that two old friends are now again playing games and taking walks.

V e t e r a n s h o n o r in g V e t e r a n s Vietnam War veteran Bart Bartholomew went to his ship reunion a couple years back.

At the ships banquet, a shipmate presented another shipmate with a beautiful resin statue of a sailor carrying his sea bag.

Intrigued with both the idea and the beauty of the statue, Bart thought that he would like to do the same and honor veterans back here at home. Returning home, he approached fellow Navy veterans Pat & Jerry Folse and Mickey Herdegen with the idea--and Veterans Honoring Veterans was born.

The intention behind Veterans Honoring Veterans is to simply honor veterans for their service with a 15? resin statue. There are four different statues depicting the five different branches (Navy and Coast Guard share a design) and a beautiful eagle model for female veterans. An engraved plate on the base of the statue has the veteran?s name, service branch, rank, years of service, and the conflict they were in if they were in one.

PAMVET breakfast. PAMVETS meet every Saturday morning at the Golden Corral in Loveland at 0730. The VHV committee has also traveled to the homes of veterans too weak or ill to travel to present a statue to them. Bart?s dream is eventually to present every veteran in northern Colorado who would want a statue, with a statue. Funding is temporarily hampering this honorable dream, so VHV is presently concentrating efforts on Larimer County veterans.
