Dear Readers, Welcome to the April issue. As I write this during a snowstorm, I hope you?ll be reading this on a nice spring day! This month?s issue is full of great stuff.

Brad Hoopes, Publisher Remember And Honor

There?s no greater news than the fact that Honor Flight will continue on in northern Colorado, southern Wyoming, and western Nebraska, now as ?High Plains Honor Flight?. Honor Flight Northern Colorado had such a huge impact and influence in the local veteran community, and quite frankly in the general community for 10 years. It was a life changing experience for so many, including me. Matt Voris is a good man and has assembled a great team, so High Plains Honor Flight will undoubtedly continue on where HFNC left off without missing a step. If you are a veteran who hasn?t been honored by one of these experiences, you need to get your application in! If you?ve never been out to see a send off out at the Embassy Suites or lined up somewhere along I-25 to see the magnificent caravan go by, make plans to do so on the morning of Sept. 15th.

Pam Matt with Helping Heroes Fly is providing a special service. How many of you have stories when you served of trying to get home for a holiday, family loss or emergency, and couldn?t because of finances? Military pay, particularly with our enlisted personnel, hovers at the poverty level, which is criminal. Pam has put her heart and soul into bridging that gap to get our serving men and women home when they need to get home. Thank you, Pam. Hopefully the story on Frank Ward?s collection of military toy soldiers, models and dioramas will prompt you to visit his private museum. I still think of the time he brought out a diorama of a WWII French village to the WWII weekend at the airport. I was standing there admiring it when a daughter wheeled up her father, who was slumped over and obviously had dementia. As she pulled up to the diorama, he sat up straight and in an animated voice starting talking about the village. Talking about how the soldiers would slip on the cobblestones when making a turn because they were so slick, the children they came across, etc. After awhile, the daughter said it was time to go, and as she pulled away from the diorama, the father slumped over and returned into the trapped world of this terrible disease.

Speaking of WWII, we had some of our greatest generation honored by the French government in what was a beautiful and emotional ceremony in February at the Good Samaritan in Windsor.

Lastly, I hope you enjoy the heartwarming story about Sue. Hope you enjoy this issue!

H ig h p l a in s h o n o r f l ig h t In February 2018, Col. Stan Cass, founder of Honor Flight Northern Colorado, announced ?Mission Accomplished!? Honor Flight National, which started in 2004, has as its sole mission to take WWII veterans back to DC to see their memorial. The northern Colorado hub, which started up in 2008, took nearly 3000 veterans back to Washington, being one of the first and only hubs to also include Korea and Vietnam veterans. With the Colonel?s announcement, the plan was to finish with the upcoming May and September trips. That last flight, unbeknownst to him, was to be named in his honor. He was to go on this last flight to enjoy it as a veteran, free of the responsibilities of leading it. Sadly, we lost Col. Cass in April.

think about the idea of keeping it going. ?I just knew I couldn?t let it die?, said Voris. He headed up a transition team to explore the idea. After reporting his findings to the board, getting their approval to proceed, and asking for and getting the blessings from Col. Cass?s wife Cecily and family, he formed High Plains Honor Flight. He formed a new, stellar board consisting of Mark Gill, Scott Sherman, Jennifer McPherson, Diana Warberg, Adam Gostenik, Steve Heaton, Shelley Wampler, Jim Kepler, Curtis Hansen, Ginger Mummery, Susan Balderston, and himself. Board Advisors: Cecily Cass, Lee Seward, William Suhre. He also got all the organizations, people, and businesses that made up the components of the trip on board, with all wholeheartedly agreeing.

After that last flight, the process began to shut down the hub. There was an overwhelming response in the community by those sad to see it end. With that wave of response, coupled with the interaction with the 113 Vietnam veterans on the last flight, board member Matt Voris began to

F r a n c e h o n o r s l o c a l v e t e r a n s _________ In February, at a ceremony hosted by the Good Samaritan in Windsor, the French government honored six local World War II veterans with their Legion of Honor medal. The medal, established

by Napoleon in 1802, is awarded to Americans who fought on French soil during WWII. The ceremony began with presentation of colors by the UNC ROTC, and then playing of both the French and our national anthems.

Morrison, a combat nurse who followed the front lines and also was at the liberation of Buchenbald concentration camp; Armand Sedgeley, a B17 bombardier

LTC Frank Huffman, who emceed the ceremony, then gave a thorough background of each veteran. The French Consulate General Christophe Lemoine, who flew in from the French Consulate in Los Angeles, followed with a heartfelt speech thanking Americans in general, and these veterans in particular for their part in liberating France. He then pinned each veteran individually, presenting this part of the ceremony in French.

The bookends of the ceremony were bagpipe music provided by Marti Mace. A reception followed. The veterans honored were: Leila 8

whose plane was shot down and had to ditch in the ocean; Bill Powell, a B-24 pilot who was shot down on his 10th mission and spent the rest of the war as a POW; Phil Daily, a B17 tailgunner who on his 25th mission was shot down and became a POW; and Harry Maroncelli, a B17 ball turret gunner who beat the odds and made it to his required 35 missions. Joe Graham, a tank commander,

unfortunately passed at the age of 100 shortly after receiving word he was to be awarded. Joe was noted at the ceremony and then honored posthumously when the consulate general presented his medal to his son Jack privately after the ceremony. I sat down to interview Don Merritt and preserve his story about his experiences in the army during the Korean War. As he told his story, I kept thinking, ?Damn,I just heard this exact story somewhere?? After thinking about, I realized it was very similar to Will Harmes? story, whom I had interviewed about a month earlier. The similarities of their stories were mind boggling.

Both were born and raised in the Rochester area of New York. Both served with the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment of the 7th Infantry Division. The only difference being Will was in Co. B, Don in Co. H. Both fought on famous sites such as Pork Chop Hill. Returning home, both began working at Kodak. In the

early 70?s, both put in for transfers out to the new Windsor plant when it opened. Both would go on to long careers there before retiring.

Will?s daughter Susan and Don?s daughter Wendy graduated high school together. Will had lost his first wife to cancer. Don?s wife had succumbed to Alzheimer?s.

What was even more mind boggling, is that they had never met! That was easily remedied by setting up a lunch date and they became instant friends. A couple of weeks later they were roommates when they went on the Honor Flight. We just lost Will in February. I will miss him.

Frank Ward, Mel and Dee Neal

H id d e n Ge m A true hidden gem in N. Colorado is Frank Ward?s vast and priceless collection of miniature soldiers, models, and dioramas. The private museum is located in the basement of his office building in Loveland.

Frank, a 1956 Loveland High graduate, U.S. Marine, and well known local builder, began collecting over 30+ years ago. Today he has help from long-time friends Mel (USN) and Dee Neal.

When not in the museum, they spend time on the road going to shows around the country buying and trading items around the collection.

Presently the collection consists of 4000+ toy soldiers, 100-200 models, 40-50 dioramas, posters, and donated uniforms and artifacts.

Many pieces are from the 1920?s, 30?s and 40?s.

Everything was almost lost when a fire broke out in the Ward Building in 2013. While much of the fire was centered in the roof, with the collection in the basement it suffered both fire and extensive water damage. Right away Frank set out to repair or replace the damaged or destroyed pieces in the collection. He also hired an extremely talented college student, Andres Flores, to rebuild damaged dioramas and build new ones to display his pieces. The detail in these dioramas is stunning.

The museum has open houses numerous times throughout the year and also enthusiastically schedules private showings. Plan on a couple hours to truly take everything in. For more information call Mel at 970-593-2679.

H el p in g h er oes f l y Three years ago Pam Matt was talking with her friend Terri Keeney, when Terri said she learned that the military does not pay to get personnel home for holidays or emergencies. Terri asked Pam if she was interested in forming a non-profit to help these service personnel in financial need during these situations. Pam was fully aware of this, as years earlier she had an occasion when she could have used this service while trying to get her Marine son home. She agreed and Helping Heroes Fly (HHF) was born.

Greeley based 501(c)3 organization. Pam is only aware of one other organization that does this, and they only do it during November and December. The need for this service is year-round though. HHF has flown personnel home from locations worldwide. Their first year they flew 65 service members home. In 2017 another 129, last year 132, and 12 so far this year. What keeps her going is the heartwarming stories of those HHF has helped. ?They are so willing to give all for us, this is simply our way of trying to give back to them?, says Pam.

The purpose of HHF is to raise funds in order to be able to provide airfare to active duty enlisted military men and women who are oftentimes unable to be home for such things as funerals, weddings, holidays, the birth of a child or even much needed R&R. HHF operates on a first come, first served basis without regard to race, gender, religion, rank, or even need for assistance.

Pam now runs the organization. She handles all paperwork and confirmations of leave; and with years of airline ticketing experience, she also arranges all travel in house. Because HHF runs solely on donations, a big part of her time also goes to raising money. On t h e l ig h t e r Sid e ___ There's an Air For ce guy driving from McChord to Ft Lewis, and an Army guy driving from Ft Lewis to McChord. In the middle of the night with no other cars on the road they hit each other head on and both cars go flying off in different directions.The Air Force guy manages to climb out of his car and surveys the damage. He looks at his twisted car and says,....."Man, I am really lucky to be alive!"

Likewise the Army guy scrambles out of his car and looks at his wreckage. He too says to himself, ..... "I can't believe I survived this wreck!" The Army guy walks over to the Air Force guy and says,...... "Hey man, I think this is a sign from God that we should put away our petty differences and live as friends instead of arch rivals". The Air Force guy thinks for a moment and says, ...... "You know, you're absolutely right! We should be friends. Now I'm gonna see what else survived this wreck" So the Air Force guy pops open his trunk and finds a full, unopened bottle of Jack Daniels. He says to the Army guy, "I think this is another sign from God that we should toast to our new found understanding and friendship".

The Army guy replies, "You're damn right!" and he grabs the bottle and starts sucking down Jack Daniels. After putting away nearly half the bottle the Army guy hands it back to the Air Force guy and says, "Your turn!". The Air Force guy twists the cap back on the bottle and says, "Nahh, I think I'll wait for the cops to show up."

A d o g n a me d s u e Russ McConnell of Johnstown served as an officer with the 41st Field Artillery Battalion of the 3rd Infantry Division. With his experiences starting in French Morocco, moving across Africa, amphibious landings in Sicily, Anzio and southern France and up through to Germany and then into Austria when the war ended, he is someone you could sit and listen to all day as he told stories. The story he wants to tell though, which still tugs at his heart, is about a dog named Sue. Russ began his association with Sue when he takes over B Battery in France. He initially thought she is a stray they picked up along the way. Actually, Sue hails from Tacoma, WA. Her story starts when a couple of men from B Battery bring her back while on leave. They get her onto base at Ft. Ord, CA, where pets are not allowed.

Incredibly, the unit keeps her hidden on the cross-country troop train to the East Coast and then on the ship to Africa! It is said a man gave up space in his duffle bag to hide her.

Sue and B Battery are now in France. One night at battalion HQ, officers are sitting around talking about the various batteries and begin running down B Battery. Russ speaks up and says that while the battery has their problems, they have potential. The next morning the colonel wakes him up and addresses him as Baker 6, which is code for the leader of B Battery.

Now their new leader, Russ walks over to tell the battery the news, not knowing how he will be accepted. He soon discovers he is in charge of a unit of men and one dog, when Sue is the first to greet him. Sue quickly warms up to him and that, coupled with Russ explaining how he got the command, breaks the ice with the men.

Sue, a terrier, makes her rounds checking on the men. She seems to sense her duty is to maintain morale and give the men a brief reprieve from the war. Russ often thinks as he watches Sue, that for a brief moment she manages to transform a battle hardened and weary soldier into a boy and his dog just sitting on a front porch back home. Sue also provides the men with toasty feet if their sleeping bag happens to

be the one she decides to burrow into for the night.

Sue also senses who the Alpha dog of the battery is, as she always rides in Russ?s jeep when they are on the move. On one occasion while in transit, the line of vehicles come to a halt and Russ goes to see what is up. The line begins moving again, so Russ jumps back into his jeep. At their destination, he realizes Sue wasn?t in the jeep and must have gotten out with him. This puts him in a panic. ?If I lose Sue, I will lose the battery,? he thought. He sends some men back and sure enough, at the spot where they had stopped Sue sat patiently waiting to be picked up.

Russ? assessment of the battery proved to be true, as the battery becomes so well respected that it is given the honor to represent the American Forces in a 1st French Army Awards Ceremony. Unfortunately there isn?t enough room for the whole battery to participate in the parade, so many have to stay back. A private walks up to Russ?s jeep and without asking permission from Russ, puts Sue in the back seat of Russ?s jeep and said, ?Sue, this is your seat.?

Sue rides proudly in the jeep past the viewing stand that holds top brass and dignitaries.

Russ wonders how many awards Sue would have received, had she been human. ?The division was in combat for 553 days and went through four amphibious landings and ten combat operations. Sue was there the entire way.? he says while shaking his head. After the war, Sue returns home with one of the men and Russ lost touch with her.

Russ is very proud and feels privileged to have served with the 3rd Division, well as with a small, but mighty dog named Sue. Remember Rem em ber and and Honor Honor
