Home Series: Inspiring Home Offices

A home office should be a beautiful, functional space that inspires creativity, facilitates productivity, and adds to your home’s value.

For many of us, working from home has evolved from a mandatory directive to a lifestyle choice, and the current housing market has reflected this. Most newly built residences have at least one work-fromhome space incorporated into the design, and depending on size and budget, this can range from a sleek ‘study nook’ to a fully customised executive office.

If you are considering converting a spare bedroom or upgrading an outdated study there are many things to consider. Probably the most important one is to keep it adaptable, to preserve or increase the home’s value when it comes time to re-selling.

Here are our top tips for creating an adaptable workfrom-home space that is beautiful and functional.

1

Keep it simple

Aim for a streamlined, clutter-free, and paper-free workspace. Basically, all you need is an ergonomically-efficient desk and chair. The desktop should have enough space for you to spread out your laptop, monitor, keyboard and mouse, and have drawers underneath to store notebooks, pens etc. If the room already has built-in robes, you can easily adapt these to store your books, files and folders, even the printer, rather than installing bulky shelving and storage units.

2

Technological Considerations

Technology is evolving all the time, and, happily, for the most part, is becoming ‘invisible’, with no need for snaking cables, flashing modems or bulky PCs. In new purpose-built spaces, the technological infrastructure is integrated into the design. If re-purposing an existing room, consider having an electrician install additional power points rather than running an extension lead or power board. Probably the most important consideration is optimum internet connectivity. If you don’t get a good signal in your workfrom-home space you may need to upgrade or extend your coverage. Remember, if you legitimately ‘work from home’ any expenses for updates/ improvements to your home office can be claimed on your tax return.

Make it beautiful

4

Optimum Desk Placement

The position of your desk is all about personal preference. It depends on the activity you’re carrying out, the time of day you like to work, what you see out of your window, and also what colleagues will see behind you on Zoom calls. If you’re most productive in the mornings, and the 10am sun is going to be streaming in on your monitor, you should consider moving your desk. If you think you’ll be easily distracted or prone to daydreaming, you might want to face the desk away from the window, particularly if it looks out to a garden or yard where kids or pets might be playing. However, for creative types, a lovely view, if you’re lucky enough to have one, can help the process.

‘Employee’ health and wellness should be an important factor, and the best-designed home offices have access to natural lighting, fresh air, and a greenspace outlook. A lush indoor plant, a beautiful artwork, and a comfortable chair or small sofa that can be used for visiting clients, or for more relaxing tasks such as reading, will enhance the aesthetics and ‘liveabilty’ of your workspace. If you like to listen to music while you’re working, a digital radio or wi-fi speaker will help create the perfect ambience. What do you see out of your window? If it’s a bare fence, consider creating a vertical garden. The more greenery you can surround yourself with, the better it is for your mental and physical health.

Keep it Adaptable

If you’re using a spare bedroom, it’s probably best to keep the space adaptable so that it can be marketed as either a bedroom or a home office depending on what the real estate agent feels adds the best value. That said, a well-presented and functional work-from-home space is one of the best ways to demonstrate your home’s capacity for 21st century liveability and may entice a whole new generation of work/life-balanceseeking buyers for whom a home office is high on their list of priorities.
