We spoke with Hayley Worley, founder of Sheet Society, about how a gap in the bedding market sparked a bold idea. From fashion-led designs to natural fibres and a customer-first approach, Hayley shares the journey behind the brand that’s changing the way we make our beds — and why retail expansion is just the beginning.

What sparked the idea for Sheet Society back in 2017?

Was there a specific moment that inspired you?

Back in 2017, it was obvious that the bedding market was missing a high-quality, trend-led product. When I was shopping for bed sheets, it never felt like I could find what I wanted. I had an extensive background in product design and thought, “Well, why don’t I try to create something?”

We had a unique focus on creating bedding made only from natural fibres, sold in separates so customers could mix, match, and take only what they need.

What does a typical product development cycle look like from concept to customer?

Every season starts with listening - to data, feedback, and, most importantly, to our customers. We dig into what worked (and what didn’t) from previous ranges, gather insights from our team, and use all of that to guide what comes next. Then, it’s time to get creative. We explore trends, dive into what’s been inspiring us, and build mood boards to shape a vision that feels fresh and true to our brand.

From there, we develop a seasonal theme and product story, align on key styles, and work closely with suppliers to source the right materials. We always keep an eye out for sustainable and innovative options. Samples are made, tested (and even slept in), and refined through multiple rounds until everything meets our standards. Then it’s all about finalising the details and ensuring quality every step of the way. Once everything’s checked and approved, the range is ready to land where it really matters — with our customer.

How does your background in fashion influence the design and marketing of your bedding products?

Coming from a background in fashion has shaped the way we create our products. We pride ourselves on offering fashion for the bed, drawing inspiration from the latest trends, colours, and patterns that inspire us and resonate with what’s happening in the market — both here in Australia and internationally.

What’s your best advice for choosing the right bedding when it comes to colour, texture, and creating a cohesive bedroom look?

We offer something for every type of sleeper. It’s all about mixing and matching in a way that feels unique and right for you and your space. That’s why we offer the tools to style your bed your way. Whether calming tones or mood-boosting hues, we make it easy to style your bed like you would your outfit, so your space always feels uniquely yours.

Our Bed Builder lets you visualise your dream bed, while free fabric swatches help you see your favourite textures and colours in their best light — your bedroom. If you’re still not sure where to start, we’ve got endless styling inspiration and expert stylists in-store and online to help you create a bed that feels like you.

Where do you see Sheet Society heading next, especially when it comes to global expansion?

We know most bedding purchases still happen in-store, and expanding our retail footprint gives more people the chance to shop Sheet Society in the way they want to.

Our retail spaces offer an elevated experience that goes beyond what customers typically expect when shopping for their bed. From our interactive Bed Builder to free fabric swatches, we make it easy to get inspired and style your dream bed — wherever and however you choose to shop. In-store, customers will find our team of expertly trained stylists who are passionate about helping you find the perfect combination of colour and fabric to suit your style and space.

Sheet Society Bondi has just opened and is our first standalone location outside of where we started — Melbourne — with more to come on the horizon. ■

Beekeeper from Apollo Inn

A twist on the classic Old Fashioned, Apollo Inn’s Beekeeper cocktail uses whiskey and chamomile-infused honey for a floral, soothing finish. Perfect for winding down on cosy evenings.

Ingredients Technique

Makes one Beekeeper

60ml whiskey of your choice

5ml Chamomile Vanilla Honey (see below)

2 dashes of 10% salt solution (optional)

3 dashes of orange bitters

Lemon twist

Chamomile Vanilla Honey

500ml quality honey

1 vanilla pod

150ml chamomile tea, brewed and cooled (steep according to packet instructions)

1. To make the chamomile vanilla honey, scrape the seeds from the vanilla pod and place both seeds and pod in a small saucepan with the honey. Bring to a low simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat, add the cooled chamomile tea, and stir to combine.

2. To make the Beekeeper, pour all ingredients into a rocks glass, add a large ice cube, and stir for 10–15 seconds. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Additional options: This drink is just as good topped with soda and lemon for a refreshing non-alcoholic option, or you can add a splash of whiskey for a highball-style serve.

THE ART OF KIMONO

Recently opening to great anticipation at NGV International, Kimono is a stunning celebration of one of Japan’s cultural icons. Spanning over 400 years of craftsmanship and style, the NGV-curated exhibition showcases more than 70 exquisite kimono, along with 150 complementary works including woodblock prints, paintings, theatre costumes, and contemporary fashion pieces. The result is a visual journey that examines the evolution of the kimono from the Edo period to the forefront of Japanese street fashion.

The exhibition unfolds with each garment revealing layers of craftsmanship and cultural meaning, many unveiled to Australian audiences for the first time. Highlights include seven newly acquired Edo-period kimono, their flowing silk and ramie surfaces adorned with delicate motifs of wisteria, maple, snow and pine. Equally captivating is a traditional red wedding kimono created using the intricate shibori tie-dye technique, and a rare white bridal kimono once owned by Melbourne’s Funiko Saito, a former imperial embroiderer in Japan.

The exhibition balances reverence for tradition with a deep dive into the kimono’s modern-day reinvention. One standout is the Australian premiere of Dark Romantic, a 2025 collection by contemporary designer Jotaro Saito, whose bold, hand-painted creations merge heritage techniques with a distinctly modern aesthetic. Also featured are trailblazing works by Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto and Comme des Garçons, whose reinterpretations of the kimono silhouette have left a lasting impact on global fashion.

Beyond Japan, Kimono reveals the garment’s influence on Western couture, particularly during the Japonisme movement of the early twentieth century. Parisian coats from Poiret and Callot Soeurs sit alongside designs by John Galliano and Alexander McQueen, each echoing the kimono’s sculptural lines and exquisite surface detail. Sydney’s own Akira Isogawa adds a local lens to this global narrative, his garments quietly paying homage to the kimono’s form and symbolism.

A section dedicated to theatrical kimono from noh and kyogen traditions adds further depth, revealing the role of costume in Japan’s performing arts. With their shimmering brocades and gilded threads, these pieces reflect the opulence of garments once worn by the nobility.

Spanning centuries of style, from traditional samurai dress to colourful Harajuku looks, Kimono reveals how Japan’s iconic garment continues to inspire the world. A celebration of craft, culture and creativity. ■ LEARN MORE

Is the Market Starting to Shift ?

After several months of relative steadiness, there are early signs that Melbourne’s prestige property market may be shifting gears. Some commentators are beginning to suggest that the market is slowly moving out of its recent holding phase, and while it’s too early to call it a full resurgence, the signals are worth watching.

One of the most telling indicators has been the strong sellthrough of Q1 properties that did not find a buyer earlier in the year. With minimal new listings coming to market over the past fortnight, motivated buyers have circled back to existing stock, leading to improved outcomes for sellers who have remained realistic in their pricing.

At the same time, vendors appear to be pacing their plans. Rather than listing during the quieter winter weeks, many are holding back and eyeing August as a more favourable time to sell. It suggests growing confidence, with sellers preferring to wait for the right moment rather than rushing to market.

As always, market activity is nuanced and localised — but for buyers and sellers alike, it’s clear the landscape is beginning to evolve. The coming weeks will offer further clues as to whether we are entering a period of steady acceleration.
