Step into the world of AKI Design, a family-owned interior architecture and design studio that transforms ordinary spaces into visual and functional works of art. Located in Melbourne, this design team has become synonymous with innovation and creativity. We sat down with Tessa James to explore how AKI is redefining Australia's architectural landscape, one incredible space at a time.

How do you integrate aesthetic and functional elements in your approach to interior architecture?

At AKI, we approach interior architecture by first understanding the home's history, its architectural lineage, and its surrounding landscape—be it city, country, beach, etc. Equally important is comprehending the client's lifestyle and functional requirements. Whether they have a family, are time poor, or prioritise comfort informs our design. This initial creative direction serves as a guiding framework throughout the project. As we delve into space planning, joinery, and functional design, we continually refer to this initial concept to ensure coherence and alignment all the way to the final design.

How does AKI's design focus on sensory and tactile experiences to meet clients' specific tastes?

AKI's design philosophy focuses on a deep comprehension of the client's vision and the essence of their home. Starting with concept conversations, we explore how clients imagine their living spaces and the feelings they wish to evoke. This allows us to subtly blend sensory and tactile elements into the design, using aspects such as contours, colour schemes, wood varieties, and art. The integration of these elements is designed to be understated yet impactful, with details like specific paint colours, bespoke scents, or tailored lighting to bring a home to life.

How do your customised furniture, art, and object procurement contribute to enhanced living experiences?

Home is where we spend most of our time, make memories, and feel secure. AKI tailors furniture, art, and objects to truly reflect a client's personality and aspirations. Utilising our network of international and local artisans, we handpick each item for its designated space. We offer floor plans and artistic renders to ensure clients understand how their spaces will appear, examining all functional aspects beforehand to guarantee a seamless fit throughout the home.

In what manner does AKI's emphasis on the "human experience" reflect in your final design solutions?

You need to feel comfortable and confident in your home - we want our clients to feel empowered by their space, comfortable, safe, and inspired. A home is a work in progress, it's a wonderful feeling to add elements of your life into your home - this is where we create memories. We love to give our clients curated, elevated versions of themselves in their home, a talking point and a place that is a true reflection of themselves and their lifestyle.

Focusing on the human experience allows us to create a space where clients can organically connect with family, friends, or simply feel peace and be their best selves.

For individuals seeking to engage the expertise of an interior designer, what qualities or criteria would you advise them to consider?

Some clients come to us with mood boards, floor plans, materials, and a good sense of where they want to go with their home. Others simply want a change, a refresh, a new build, or renovation and trust us to guide them throughout the process. The Personal Curator service allows for either scenario; the client can have a handheld journey throughout the process or have more of a hands-on approach. If you have a floor plan, an idea of a budget is a great way to start, however all you really need is to reach out to the designer as the first step and we will organise a briefing to explain our services.

What is your vision for the future of AKI Design Studio?

Our vision for AKI Design Studio involves expanding into commercial and retail sectors, while nurturing our current focus, "The Personal Curator" service. We're also developing AKI Projects, a comprehensive approach to residential development tailored for our clientele. As a family business, we value a supportive, female-led work environment that lets us focus on client needs and individual growth. We're optimistic about the future of both AKI and The Personal Curator. ■

In this feature, we introduce Elena Strohfeldt, the creative force and founder of Elso Collective. We explore the personal and artistic influences that have formed her distinctive brand, from her early passion for jewellery design to the transformative power of ceramics in her life and the latest “GOLD” Collection.

Can you describe the journey that led up to the launch of Elso Jewellery, and how your passion for a fulfilling creative outlet eventually became Elso Collective?

From a young age, I've been passionate about designing jewellery, constantly filling art diaries with my creations. Frustrated by the lack of affordable, durable options in the market, I launched my own line, Elso Jewellery, focusing on minimal designs made in Australia from solid gold and silver. Elso Jewellery naturally transitioned into Elso Collective as I re-engaged with painting and ventured into ceramics during Melbourne's 2020 lockdowns.

The focus of Elso Collective has shifted solely towards ceramics for now. I was honestly surprised by how well they were received and how fast it has grown, so I have hit pause on my jewellery and my art. It feels like an organic change in my journey as an artist and business owner.

As a creative individual who finds expression through ceramics, how do you transform your personal experiences and emotions into tangible artistic creations?

My ceramics practice is therapeutic, helping me navigate my emotions and experiences. Each piece reflects my life's journey.

My latest collection, titled “GOLD”, is inspired by my struggles with mental health and how ceramics continues to heal me. Naming each vase after everyday tasks, like getting out of bed, acknowledges the challenges they pose for those struggling, with gold decoration symbolising a gold medal for their completion. I want this collection to highlight that sometimes just getting through the day is a significant achievement.

How does your commitment to conscious consumption influence your designs and production processes?

Every aspect of my ceramics business is informed by an environmental conscience—from recycling excess clay to selecting pieces for firing to minimise energy use and employing compostable packaging. I believe that every little step we can take to help the environment matters and this influences many of my business decisions.

What role does working with local family businesses play in Elso Collective?

As a fellow small business, I love to support other small businesses. Whether I am sourcing materials or looking at businesses to collaborate with, I always try and find a small business I can support first before looking to the bigger ones.

What aspects of Picasso's muses particularly inspire you in your artistic journey, and how do they influence your creative process and the works you produce?

During my high school art studies, Picasso significantly inspired me, especially when naming my first jewellery collection. His influence was profound, but I was struck by the talented women behind his work, often overlooked and under-credited. As a female artist, I aimed to honour them by naming each piece after these remarkable women.

What motivated Elso's partnership with i=change, and how does this collaboration align with your goals for social and environmental responsibility?

The ethos of sharing success led me to partner with i=change, drawn by their foundation of trust, transparency, and kindness. This collaboration aligns with my goals for social and environmental responsibility through the NGOs they support. I also love how accountable they are with each and every dollar that is donated.

Looking ahead, what is your vision for Elso Collective in terms of its artistic contributions, collaborations, and influence?

My aspiration is to expand Elso Collective's ceramics line, with a personal goal to acquire my own kiln to allow more creative freedom and control. Focusing on art exhibitions motivates me to evolve as an artist, alongside hosting more workshops to share the therapeutic benefits of clay. ■

Lobster Florentine

Genre-bending South Melbourne eatery Clementine shares the recipe for their decadent dish, Lobster Florentine.

Clementine 67-69 Palmerston Crescent, South Melbourne

Ingredients

Lobster salad

1 piece lobster tail around 500g

1 lemon

1 tbsp chopped tarragon

1/2 tbsp chopped dill

1 tbsp chopped cornichon

1 tbsp chopped capers

1 tbsp chopped red onion

1 tbsp whole grain mustard

1 tbsp horseradish

2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

Lobster bisque hollandaise

3 egg yolks

1 1/2 tbsp lemon juice

3 tbsp lobster bisque or dashi stock

1 tsp Dijon mustard

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter

To serve

4 slices toasted cornbread

8 poached eggs

80g baby spinach leaf

Serves 4

Method

For the Lobster salad

Bring approximately 8 cups of water to a boil. Place thawed lobster tails in the boiling water and reduce the heat to a low simmer. Cook for about 8 minutes.

Remove the lobster tails and allow them to cool for a few minutes.

Dice the lobster tails into cubes, then mix with salt, pepper, and other ingredients for the lobster salad.

For the Lobster bisque hollandaise

Melt the butter in a microwave (covered to prevent splattering) for about 1 minute until hot. Alternatively, you can heat it on the stove.

Combine the egg yolks, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, salt, and lobster bisque in a high-powered blender and blend for five seconds until combined.

With the blender running on medium-high, slowly pour the hot butter into the mixture until it's emulsified. Transfer the hollandaise sauce into a small bowl and serve warm.

In celebration of International Women's Day on March 8, we had the privilege of speaking with Marshall White Director Nicole French about her inspiring journey in real estate. Join us as we share Nicole's story, highlighting her achievements, leadership qualities, and advice for aspiring women professionals in real estate.

Can you share with us your journey, from starting in the real estate industry to becoming a Director at Marshall White?

Starting as a weekend receptionist in secondary school and continuing through university, I gained early exposure to the real estate industry, later broadening my experience in commercial property. My career at Marshall White has spanned over 15 years, transitioning from administrative and hybrid roles to full-time sales. This journey helped me learn all areas of the business, from handling trust accounts to advertising, and navigating complex sales. My experience covers selling everything from luxury homes to off-the-plan developments, requiring a diverse skill set where I sell not just properties but future dreams, allowing me to meet a wide range of client needs. My path led me to becoming a Director at Marshall White in 2021.

How have your experiences shaped your leadership style and approach in the industry?

I've become an advocate for guiding young professionals entering the field, not only as their mentor but also as their biggest supporter and sounding board. This stems from my own experiences of facing challenges along the way, enabling me to offer sound advice and insights.

I believe that a collaborative team is crucial in creating an environment where everyone feels supported and valued as a team member, which in turn reflects positively on our client interactions and ensures that both vendors and buyers enjoy their experience with us.

The solidarity amongst women in real estate—from stylists and buyers’ advocates to sales agents at Marshall White and other agencies—has grown over the years. We recognise that together, we are stronger. At Marshall White, the mutual support amongst women is particularly strong, which is wonderful.

As a woman in a leadership position, what personal qualities do you feel have been instrumental in your continued success at Marshall White?

In my role, empathy, authenticity, and approachability have been key. A focus on detail and strong organisational skills, along with adaptability to new technologies and methods, are crucial. At Marshall White, ongoing training is prioritised, which is essential for navigating real estate's ever-evolving landscape.

Curiosity about people's lives and making connections with clients and colleagues also enrich my work. Conversations about their personal stories, travel, and interests deepen my understanding of their life journeys, adding a unique dimension to each interaction

What do your achievements, including being honoured with the Rising Star Award and winning the Australasian Real Estate Results Awards (ARERAs) 2019 Victorian Agent of the Year mean to you personally and professionally?

These awards represent milestones in my professional journey and are reminders of my career growth and achievements over time. They symbolise not just my success, but the collective support and collaboration of my team who share a commitment to going above and beyond for our clientele.

What aspect of your real estate journey are you most proud of?

Being part of the Marshall White Foundation Board, I am passionate about leveraging my expertise in real estate to give back to the community, especially in providing housing solutions to displaced women and children via our charity partners, YouMatter and Launch Housing. This commitment to giving back, particularly in the property space, is something I believe is both a privilege and a responsibility for those of us in the real estate industry.

With your extensive experience and expertise, what advice do you have for aspiring women professionals looking to succeed in the real estate industry?

Just keep going. Focus on your path, stay in your own lane, and don't get distracted by the competition. Strive to be the best version of yourself that you can possibly be, and always remain true to your values and principles.

As a female leader in the property sector, how do you see the future of women's roles and contributions evolving within the industry?

I'm optimistic about the increasing presence of women in significant roles in real estate, and I especially hope to see an increase in the number of female agents and heading towards an even more inclusive future for our industry. ■
