What’s on in Melbourne this summer

Art, Culture & Design The Alexander McQueen Mind, Mythos, Muse exhibition opens at the NGV on the 11th of December. The exhibition, organised by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) in partnership with the National Gallery of Victoria, this is the first major Australian exhibition to explore McQueen’s thought-provoking and singular viewpoint. The exhibition showcases over 120 garments and accessories alongside more than 80 artworks from a multitude of eras and cultures. The Heide Museum of Modern Art in Bulleen continues to evolve as one of Victoria’s most important cultural institutions, visit over summer for a collection of unique exhibits including Things That Will Not Sit Still, open until January 2023. This exhibition explores the shifting nature of perception, art and ideas. Until January next year, you can see Hamilton at Her Majesty’s Theatre, the boundary-pushing, historymaking musical that has been making waves globally since 2015. Finally, discover the complete works of the French impressionists with the multi-sensory art experience at The Lume with Monet & Friends.

Of course, the iconic Australian Open will be returning to Melbourne in January. The first tennis Grand Slam of the year is always a major event, and the AO has turned up the atmosphere in recent years with the addition of live music, activations and some of Melbourne’s best restaurant pop-ups. In 2023, the Australian Open’s Beach House returns. The Beach House will see the northern side of Melbourne Park transformed into a vibrant beach club complete with private cabanas and a double-storey bar crowned with a DJ booth towering over Melbourne Park – ensuring it will be the place to be seen this summer. The Cricket, the Cricket Test Match on Boxing Day at the MCG is another fan favourite. This year, Australia vs. South Africa, will be just as popular.

Out of town Music Good food, fine wine and great music in magnificent locations – welcome to A Day on the Green. One of Australia’s premier and most popular outdoor concert events takes place from October – March, with around 30 concerts per season in all the major wine-growing regions around Australia. This year in Victoria, ticketholders will have the opportunity to see Crowded House, The Teskey Brothers, Robbie Williams and much more. One of Melbourne’s favourite open-air venues, the Sidney Myer Music Bowl will host – among plenty of others – both Vance Joy and Jack Johnson this summer.

Ballarat Until January 2023, the Art Gallery of Ballarat will be celebrating the rich lives and the diverse crews aboard traditional pirate ships in their exhibit, Under the Black Flag.

Heading away for the weekend? Victoria’s food and cultural scene extends way past Melbourne’s inner suburbs. In the state’s north-west and all within a half-hour from each other sit Woodend, Castlemaine, Daylesford and Ballarat. The area’s rich history makes it a mecca for day-trippers, long-weekenders, and young families looking for a long-term treechange.

Daylesford Art galleries abound in Central Victoria. Pay a visit to The Mill in Castlemaine, a hub for foodies, creatives and lovers of art. In Woodend, visit the iconic Hanging Rock, or over in Daylesford a visit to the Hepburn Springs is essential.

Bendigo

Food & Wine As always, Melbourne’s run of new restaurant and café openings continues. In Prahran, new arrival Don’s is a tiny wine bar right across from Prahran Market. Arbory Afloat returns to the Yarra, this year as a Spanish beach club. Melbourne’s favourite floating bar has a new look thanks to interior designer Tamsin Johnson. In the north, Fitzroy’s new Mediterraneaninspired restaurant, Oko is a moody new diner that prioritises staff wellbeing. The Glen Iris Pantry opposite Ferndale Park has been operating for 35 years but has now entered a new era. By day, it’s a bright, breezy coffee and brunch spot called Pantry Glen Iris and by night it morphs into Too Good Talker, an entirely Asian-inspired diner and cocktail bar. Over in Albert Park, a new daytime diner, Halcyon Days, has opened in the corner spot previously home to Fat Albert. The space is minimalist with plenty of character, food-wise it mostly homey and European-inspired.

Until November, head to Bendigo for the Bloom Festival, where a boulevard of more than 50,000 tulips will bloom and brighten the streets.

Mornington Peninsula Thanks to its sparkling sea and plentiful shops, restaurants, and cafes, always heaving Mornington Peninsula comes into its own over the summer months when hordes of Melburnian’s flock to the area. This summer will be no different thanks in part to the recently re-opened and renovated Continental Sorrento hotel which hosts both Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve events.

The Melbourne Food & Wine Festival (MFWF) has announced a special 10-day edition from November 18 to 27 across regional Victoria. Highlights include a two-day Village Feast in the Gippsland village of Thorpdale with a degustation and pop-ups from some of Australia’s best chefs.

Behind the build: A modernist home in Northcote

58a James Street, Northcote

Rebeka Morgan is a registered builder and the founder of BuildHer Collective, a business that helps women along the process of building their dream homes through online courses, webinars, events and mentoring. Rebeka is also a successful residential real estate developer, and, along with her husband and co-builder, John, she recently completed her dream home at 58a James Street, Northcote. Here, we go behind the scenes of the build of this gorgeous family home that is currently on the market with Jellis Craig Inner North!

We did indeed start with a blank slate, but we also had so many dreams and ideas for this build we really needed to corral all our thoughts and inspiration into a clearer vision. I run BuildHer Collective, which teaches women to design, build and renovate – family homes and for profit, so there is always a bit of pressure to create something unique and beautiful and to push the envelope a little.

Being builders, the layout was of course very important to us. The overall concept was around creating a home with all the living areas on one floor, and the bedrooms on another. We wanted a space that was at once conservative in its footprint whilst at the same time providing ample spaces for our large family to spread out in.

In Focus | November 2022

07

We started with a mood board that we were able to provide to our amazing local architect Bellamo & Cat. We had worked with Bellamo & Cat on previous projects, and we knew we wanted to work with them again for James Street because we love both their creativity, form and vision. Alongside the mood board, we provided a list of requirements and of course some free reign. And once againthey delivered!

How much mind did you pay to the layout of the home and what were some of your requirements here?

jelliscraig.com.au

You started with a blank slate. How and where do you go from here when it came to building such a statement-making home?

Tell us about your design process. We like a fluid design process, essentially creating as we build. I wouldn’t suggest this in a typical build but as designers and builders ourselves, we have a deep and thorough understanding of the process and how things come together, meaning we are able to play with the interiors along the way.

The statement stairs at the entrance to the home are incredible. How did these come about? We really wanted the entrance to the home to feel welcoming – a place where family and friends arrive and feel immediately at home, almost like entering an inner sanctuary. We achieved this through the brick entrance that opens up in this area to reveal the whole house. If you look through the garden, you can see straight through the foyer windows across all the living areas. We love the way the entrance feels and that the mud room, garage, and powder room are concealed behind beautiful walnut full height panelling. The stairs are complete with a terrazzo tiled staircase runner which is such a fun and prominent feature that we are delighted with.

What were some other factors that were important to you in the home? Natural light and beautiful natural materials were key to the design concept. I am a true believer that what makes a home is the moments that you are in the space with your friends and your family, so a big emphasis was put on creating moments of connection and moments for retreat.

I also must give a shoutout to the family / media room at the back of the house. With so many children, it was essential we create a space of their own that they (and we) can all pile into to sit and play. The media room has a massive sliding door and a custom couch that can sit 13, perfect for family movie nights.

James Street has been described as your “forever” home. Now that you have decided to sell, we can’t help but ask – what next?! Well, we actually never planned to sell – this was to be the forever home, however in the time between planning and building we were gifted with our youngest child and an opportunity came up to build a family home nearer the school that will have a bedroom for everyone. I am actually torn with the decision to sell as I so love this home and space. It is so unique and is a wonderful solution to being in amongst the action of High Street and completely hidden away in our own world, but I know we will be able to create another home, different but equally beautiful.

In Focus | November 2022

If I am truly honest, my space is the office and I love my office, you can remain connected to the family and separate all at once – it was a game changer during lockdowns. I think the key is the aspect looking through the round window into a garden which offers up a new delight in every season!

Inspiring, welcoming, calm.

jelliscraig.com.au

I often tell clients to start with the kitchen space first before considering the rest of the home. The reason for this is that the balance of timbers, stones and other materials are best made here. We started with the warm walnut tone to sit alongside the lovely tile base and an almost indestructible benchtop.

What are three words you would use to describe the home?

09

Tell us about your favourite room.

With so many children it was also important to get the outside space right. Tell us how you did that. An oasis is the perfect word to describe the garden. Thanks to its being hidden down a driveway, you would almost never know the space is there, the initial concept was from an incredible designer Plume Studio, but we wanted a garden that was quiet, lush and truly a little escape from our oftenchaotic life. It was in the building of this space that I decided I wanted to learn more about landscape, design and plants as I saw it as a complementary skill to building and so I decided to take on some study at Melbourne University’s Burnley Campus to learn more about the field. Seeing the garden change and grow, live and breathe through the seasons has been a wonderful experience. The natural greenery alongside unexpected hard-scaping elements like the round porthole entrance makes the garden a real little wonderland to sit and play.

MY NEIGHBOURHOOD

My Neighbourhood with Lucas Mills Before selling homes you previously worked in the building sector, tell us about how your previous work has helped you in your real estate career? Seeing all facets of the construction industry has helped me get an understanding of how a home or property comes together from the ground up and allows you to have greater appreciation of what a quality property is when you see it.

You have been selling homes in the North and West Melbourne area for nearly 10 years. What originally attracted you to work in the area?

I grew up in Strathmore and would follow the Moonee Ponds creek all the way to the city when I was younger and would often spend a lot of time winding back through West and North Melbourne and have loved it ever since.

You have fantastic relationships with your past and current clients. What advice would you give to an up-andcoming agent on how to form and maintain these great relationships? Provide advice to every client as you would if it was your friend, family member or loved one and give them the respect they deserve.

The annual price change for West Melbourne is +5.5% and the area is growing. Why do you think this is? West Melbourne specifically is undergoing a significant transformation in terms of increased residences being built and with that brings new amenities and services for the area so it is starting to land on the radar of buyers who may not have previously considered the area. Lucas Mills, agent and auctioneer with a specialist focus on the North Melbourne area, started his career in the building sector. Since making the switch to real estate, Lucas quickly capitalised on his natural affinity for the industry. We sat down with Lucas to find out his recommendations in and around Melbourne’s inner north west and how he and his family spend their weekends.

Do you remember the first home you sold in the area? Tell us about that. It was a 1-bedroom apartment, hard to sell at the time but was in an amazing location right next to the University and Hospital precincts.

Tell us about your personal property journey? Quite diverse as it has included being involved in a townhouse development, building a new house behind the façade of an old shop, updating an apartment and now in a period home.
