Huis verdwyn amper Du P Martins “Ek weet nie of ek hier moet bly of moet uittrek nie.� So het ’n ontstelde Auret van Jaarsveld gereageer nadat ’n sinkgat Saterdagoggend skuins na 05:00 voor sy huis in Pretoriusstraat, Centurion met ’n plofslag ingeval en diep onder sy huis ingekalwe het.
Die massiewe gat het Van Jaarsveld se huis ontoeganklik en onveilig gelaat en die gesin sit tans met hulle hande in hul hare. “Toe my man die eerste kraakgeluide hoor, het hy vinnig opgestaan. Die voormuur was vol krake en hy het besef iets is verkeerd,� het sy vrou, Elzabe van Jaarsveld, vertel. “Hy het toe gou ons voertuie laer die
pad af geskuif. Kort daarna het die voormuur met ’n plofslag omgekantel en het die sypaadjie voor ons huis en die een voor die skool waar kinders Vrydag nog verbygeloop het, saam met die skool se palissadeheining en deel van die tennisbaan, in die sinkgat in geval.� Die sinkgat van sowat 40 meter wyd en 20 meter diep strek van onder sy huis,
dwarsoor die twee sypaadjies tot aan die kant van die tennisbaan van Lyttelton Primary School. Net die top van ’n groot witstinkhoutboom wat voor die huis gestaan het, steek by die gat uit.

Volgens ’n anonieme munisipale werker wat die toneel besoek het, sal dit sowat ’n anderhalf jaar neem om die gat te herstel. Van Jaarsveld het Maandag vroeg ’n geoloog, Ian Deal, geraadpleeg om te besluit wat hom te doen staan. Volgens Deal wil dit voorkom of die gat deur ’n groot lekkende waterpyp, wat voor die huise in Pretoriusstraat verbyloop, veroorsaak is en dat die swaar reën ’n bydraende faktor was.
“Die probleem kom nie van Saterdag af nie. Dit het al in April vanjaar begin toe daar ’n diep holte in die pad voor ons huis ontstaan het. Daar het krake in die pad ontstaan wat gaandeweg wyer geword het. In September het die krake met die reën werklik groot geword. “Die metro het besef iets is verkeerd en het sonder sukses na die fout gesoek. Saterdag na die gat ingeval het, het die water in ’n wye boog gespuit. Hulle het sonder sukses verskillende kleppe probeer toemaak om die water te stop en ten einde laaste dit reggekry om dit by die reservoir af te skakel,” het Elzabe gesê.
Police cells in Pretoria were filled to capacity after 116 illegal immigrants were recently arrested. After receiving numerous complaints from residents, police organised a huge operation concentrating on the squatter camp at the Delmas dumpsite. According to Warrant Officer Hero Gumbu, spokesperson of Lyttelton police, they recovered various stolen items. “House burglaries in the area were very high and we recovered a large number of stolen goods.” Recovered items included stolen diesel and petrol, a plasma television, cellphones, a bicycle, alcohol, cigarettes, knives as well as other items. “We also found a quantity of Temic, commonly known as two step, a poison suspects use to poison dogs,” Gumbu said. He added that despite the 116 illegal immigrants, five suspects were arrested for being in the possession of stolen goods. The operation was done by various patrols, community policing forums, metro police, dog units as well as various police stations in Pretoria. “We worked together as a team
and really achieved success with this operation. It just shows that by working together we can achieve more.” Gumbu expressed his appreciation for the hard work of all the members who were part of the operation.

Metro warns residents on prepaid meter hoax Swindlers apparently ride on the mayor’s speech after he announced installation of prepaid meters Natalie Grobler The Tshwane metro has issued a stern warning to all its residents regarding a prepaid meter conversion scam. According to Nomasonto Ndlovu, spokesperson for the metro, the swindlers were apparently riding on Executive Mayor, Kgosientso Ramokgopa’s speech that he had made during his State of the City Address where he said that the city would embark on an initiative called Security of Revenue Project. This project entails a full rollout of prepaid electricity meters throughout the entire Pretoria region. “The fraudsters are luring customers into paying between R2 000 and R5 500 to have prepaid meters installed. They convince customers to pay them so that they could approach the metro on their behalf to have the meters installed. They then disappear without a trace.” Ndlovu warned residents that the fraudulent company circulated their advertisements via e-mail. She said they wanted to forewarn residents not to make use of the company, as it was not contracted by the metro itself. “We want to caution residents that no customer would be able to buy electricity tokens should their meters be converted privately.” She said that the metro was by law the sole distributor of electricity in the Pretoria region and therefore the resi-
dents were advised to engage the metro directly through properly established offices except in cases where the connection type dictated that there should be submetering installed. “It should be noted that the energy department has never before indicated that the rollout of prepaid meters would be at no cost to the customer. It is the cost for retrofitting the current installed conventional meters that would not be for the customer’s account, but for the metro’s.” Ndlovu said that the project would be phased in from region to region, as the metro did not have the finances to complete the project in one stage. She said the project would only be completed in 2015. Residents can only apply for the installation of the prepaid meters at the following metro offices: - Mamelodi municipal offices at customer care counter 6 and 7. - Eersterust municipal offices at counter 1. - BKS, room counter 8, CBD, 373 Pretorius Street. - Centurion municipal offices at counter 9. - Atteridgeville electricity depot. - Akasia municipal offices at customer care. - Rosslyn electricity depot at customer care. - Soshanguve community centre, Block FW at customer care.

Outages allegedly caused by leakages Suzette van Huyssteen A leaking electricity box in Lyttelton is allegedly the cause of continuous power interruptions. According to ward councillor Clive Napier, he received regular complaints about electricity supply interruptions. “Many of the interruptions are the result of ageing electricity infrastructure and poorly maintained infrastructure.” He added that because large sums of money were required for the replacement of stolen electricity cables, maintenance suffered. “Officials complain that specific sums of money are not dedicated to capital expenditure in the ward but are placed in a pool for ‘city-wide products’ as they are referred to. As a consequence the necessary maintenance and upgrading is not done and when
it is done, it is undertaken in response to extreme emergencies.” According to Napier, the matter of infrastructure expenditure had been raised on several occasions in the Region 4 Forum. “I will continue to do so in the forum and at council level. The electricity infrastructure has reached dangerous levels in many parts of the ward.” According to resident Johan Kruger, they were concerned about the situation and felt that they deserved better service from Tshwane metro. “We pay our taxes and I feel this is basic service delivery that needs to be attended to. I do not have enough fingers on my hand to count the times we have been left without power in the past few months.” He added that residents were begging for better service delivery.

Na aanleiding van die berig, Hond in warm motor toegesluit in verlede week se Rekord, is nog soortgelyke gevalle aangemeld. Karin van der Westhuizen het op ’n motor afgekom op 26 November by Raslow Checkers waar ’n klein hondjie in ’n warm motor toegesluit was. “Die hond was om 13:00 die middag in die motor toegesluit terwyl sy eienaar gaan inkopies doen het,” het Van der
Westhuizen vertel. Dit was bloedig warm in die motor en die vensters was slegs ongeveer twee vingerlengtes oop. Rick Allen van die DBV het vroeër gemaan dat mense strafregterlik vervolg kan word as hulle hul troeteldiere se welsyn so in gedrang bring. “Ons raai aan dat mense wat inkopies doen nie hul troeteldiere saamneem en in die motor agterlaat nie. Met temperature soos wat ons onlangs ervaar het, kan ’n motor met sy ruite oop ’n dier binne 20 minute laat dehidreer en enige iets langer kan fataal wees,” het Allen gewaarsku.
Government’s postponement of the highly emotional e-toll bill for discussion to February next year did not alter Cosatu’s stance of staging mass protest action for the 30 November and 6 December. The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) welcomed government’s decision to postpone the controversial Transport Laws and Related e-toll bill as a sign that government is reacting to public sentiment. By the same token it also expressed its alarm at Cosatu’s plan to forge ahead with its planned demonstration, saying that even though motorists in the Christmas season can feel relieved about the postponement, the proposed protest action of Cosatu will affect businesses trying to recoup their losses severely. Neren Rau, CEO of SACCI said the strikes and protest actions of the last few months had an extremely negative effect on business and industry. “The already strapped trade sector has been struggling now for months and now that it is beginning to show signs of recovering, any further Cosatu protests will
hamper this,” he said. Explaining the stance of SACCI, he said that the grievances aired against the e-toll system by a variety of social partners are in large part due to the lack of transparency and disregard for proper procedure. The fact that a substantial percentage of the etoll fees would go to the administrative cost of the system is unacceptable for SACCI, who suggest that a more efficient revenuecollecting model needs to be found. SACCI however, supports the user-pay principle in this regard. He added that a fuel levy for Gauteng could be regarded as a user-pay principle. Cosatu’s provincial chairperson, Phutas Tseki, said they are undeterred about government’s decision to debate the e-toll question next year. “We are going ahead with our protest action. On 30 November we intend to have mass actions in Pretoria as planned and on 6 December we will have a motor vehicle slow-go procession on all the major freeways. If at any point it becomes clear that government is prepared to have meaningful talks with the public, we will naturally cancel our protest,” he said.

Capital Media groet hoofbestuurder Albert Basson tree na byna ’n halfeeu in die mediabedryf af. Onder sy bestuur het Capital Media een van die grootste spelers in die gemeenskapspers geword. Stephané Bothma Na 43 jaar in die mediabedryf het Albert Basson, hoofbestuurder van Capital Media, besluit om sy drukkersink weg te pak en sy rekenaar af te skakel. Dié uitsonderlike man, wat sowat 22 jaar gelede die moed gehad het om ’n paar sukkelende gemeenskapskoerantjies in ’n oorversadigde mark oor te neem, stap uit met sy kop omhoog as die dryfveer wat Capital Media een van die grootste suksesstories in die bedryf gemaak het. Basson tree op 31 Desember af en hoewel hy glo dat dit tyd is om die leisels aan ’n jonger opvolger oor te gee, sal die stem-
pel wat hy op die agt Rekord titels en ook die glanstydskrif Get It in Pretoria afgedruk het, nog lank wys. Met ’n arendsoog op die groep se geldsake en ’n in diepte betrokkenheid by elke departement, is een van die hoogtepunte van Basson se loopbaan dat die groep daarin geslaag het om gedurende die afgelope paar jaar, ten spyte van die swak ekonomiese toestande, rekordwinste te wys. Die groep toon tans die beste winste in sy geskiedenis en ten spyte van die swak ekonomiese toestande, het Capital Media dié jaar ’n groei van 11% gehad. “Dit is moeilik om te glo, maar nie so lank gelede nie was ’n hele jaar se omset vir die groep gelyk aan wat een van ons middelslag koerante nou per maand doen,” het Basson gesê. Oor redaksionele besluite sê Basson sy beleid was nog altyd om nie aanstoot op ’n morele vlak te gee nie. “Ons jaag nie sensasie na nie en ons probeer niks op ons lesers afdwing nie. Ons doelwit is om ons lesers op hoogte te hou van wat in hul gemeenskap aangaan.” Die invloed van al agt Rekord se koerante verbaas dié gesoute mediaman steeds en vul hom met groot trots. Hy het egter gou geleer dat die teendeel waar is. “Ek het vir meer as 40 jaar 60 ure ’n week gewerk. Vakansiedae, Vadersdae en gesinsdae het ek gewerk en moes my gesin tweede kom. Nou gaan ek ’n bietjie rus,” het hy gesê. Hy en sy vrou beplan ’n lang reis deur die land waarna hy sal besluit wat die pad vorentoe vir hom inhou. “Ek glo nie ek sal na soveel jare se werk kan sit en niks doen nie.” Oor sy jare by Capital Media het Basson gesê: “Ons het beplan, gekommunikeer en baie hard gewerk, maar as dit nie was vir die seën van die Here nie, sou ons dit nie kon gedoen het nie.”

Act. Violence against women in our society remains an obstacle to the achievement of the objectives of equality, development and peace. It violates and impairs or nullifies the enjoyment by women of their human rights and fundamental freedoms. In all societies, to a greater or lesser degree, women and girls are subjected to physical, sexual and psychological abuse that cuts across lines of income, class and culture. In many cases, violence against women and girls occurs in the family and home, where such violence is often tolerated. In these 16 days our focus should be broader and we should view this problem in a holistic manner. We should also think of women refugees, women living in poverty in rural or remote communities, women in institutions or in detention, women with disabilities, elderly women, displaced women, women in situations of armed conflict and under foreign occupation all over the world. Developing a multidisciplinary approach to the challenging task of promoting families and communities that are free from violence against women is necessary and achievable. Educational systems should promote self-respect, mutual respect and co-operation between men and women.
Love for one another One of the men of God once defined love as giving somebody what they need, not what they deserve. These words really define how much God loves us. You see you and I did not deserve to be loved, but He went to the extent of giving us His beloved Son to die for us. We might say that we did not need His Son to die for us, but that is exactly the point. He gave us what we needed not what our limited minds think we deserve. Let us face it, our minds sometimes cannot begin to comprehend what the Almighty has done for us; thus we cannot say with all

Groot eise na skade Gert Kruger van Wierdapark skryf: Nadat ons vir ’n tydperk geen elektrisiteitsonderbrekings ondervind het nie, het die probleem nou weer met die reënseisoen begin. Die laaste een het op ’n Woensdagaand omstreeks 19:15 plaasgevind en het katastrofiese gevolge vir ons huishouding gehad. Die onderbreking het weer slegs ’n sekere gebied, waarby Susanstraat, waarin ons woonagtig is, beïnvloed. Om een of ander rede het die stelsel ’n elektriese stroom slegs na ons huis toe deurgestuur sodat slegs ons huis se elektrisiteit gewerk het terwyl alle huishoudings om ons, insluitende die strate, in duisternis gehul was. Die lading was so sterk dat dit geklink het asof ons huis besig is om te ontplof our minds how grateful we are for what He has done. God gave of His only begotten Son, before we even knew about Him. Now this is the attitude that we must have for our loved ones and neighbors. When you react to everyone, whether they have hurt you or not, your attitude should be the one of love, which means that you give them what they need at that time. You do not act out of anger, hurt, greed or even hatred. As a child of God, you do everything as unto the Lord (Colossians 3:1723). That is why the Lord Himself says that we need to love not only those who hurt us, but also our enemies (Matthew 5:43-48). We need to show love at all times. Let us

Ten spyte van ure op die telefoon kon ons tot nog toe nie met die Tshwane-metro in verbinding tree nie omdat hul telefone net aanhoudend lui en nie beantwoord word nie.

Two better than one? During December last year and in January 2012 newspapers were ďŹ lled with adverts about all kinds of specials and discounts. During this month some optometrists also advertised special discounts on eye tests and glasses. My friend and his wife decided that it was an opportune time to get new eyewear. His was almost ďŹ ve years old and with all the reading he has to do, the lenses were getting thinner by the day. They carefully scanned the advertisements taking turns to read them with a magnifying glass. He duly made an appointment for them at an optometrist. When his name was called he and his wife marched into the optometrist’s ofďŹ ce together. The woman optometrist did not really know what to make of this and initially thought it rather sweet. He was asked to sit on the stool with all the optical instruments attached to it at eye level. His wife followed him and squeezed into the seat beside him. The ustered optometrist smiled feebly and said that it might be a little uncomfortable. Would they not rather have their eyes tested individually? “Nonsense,â€? he said. “Why waste money.â€? Her hands were shaking visibly as she ďŹ tted and adjusted the instruments before his eyes, dropping lenses into the special frames. “Do you see the chart with the letters against the wall?â€? she asked. “Which wall? Oh yes, there it is.â€? “Um, yes. Tell me what letters you can read.â€?

All her years of training had not prepared her for something like this. “I’ll tell you what,â€? my friend said to his wife. “I will look through one peep-hole with my left eye. You look through the other with your right eye and see what we can read.â€? “What do you see?â€? “An ‘l’ on the right hand side, top row.â€? “No, you dummy. That is an ‘M’.â€? “No, it is an ‘L’.â€? So it went on until they covered the whole chart. They left the ofďŹ ce leaving behind a visibly shaken optometrist, frantically calling someone for trauma counselling. They left satisďŹ ed that they have saved money. They each had half a prescription for eyewear.

City school honoured Hoёrskool Eldoraigne was named as the overall winner in the Smart Young Mindz (SYM) competition out of 6 800 entries at the expo and prize giving recently. SYM is Gauteng’s leading competition aimed at stimulating interest among pupils in the fields of mathematics, science, technology and entrepreneurship. This year’s challenge to pupils in grades 8, 9 and 10 was to build a working model of a low-cost structure that is environmentally friendly and of value to the economy. Swiegers bekoor met suiwer taalgebruik Ilse Ferreira André Swiegers is ’n meesterlike liriekskrywer en sy tegniek op ’n kitaar steek ook nie af by die bestes nie. Die intieme, rustige en informele Asbos-teater was ’n goeie platform vir dié man wat informeel en onopgesmuk sy gehoor in sy hand toevou. Met die geesdriftige paddakoor in die agtergrond, het hy hulle soms tot stilte gesing en tog het die gehoor die agtergrond-orkes ook geniet. Nie al sy musiek is rustig nie, altemit nie iets wat die gehoor sou verveel nie. Hy kan soveel Latyns as rock n roll klanke uit sy kitaar haal en sy genre is ’n reis van verskillende klanke wat soms aan Koos Doep en soms aan Cat Stevens

herinner. Om die waarheid te sê, klink sy stem ook partykeer soos Koos du Plessis s’n, maar Swiegers is met sy eiesoortige lirieke iemand wat sy plek in die Afrikaanse musiekmark dubbel en dwars verdien. Van sy liedjies is ook in die nuwe FAK Sangbundel opgeneem. Dit het gou duidelik geword hoekom die gehoor entoesiastiese volgelinge is. Geen doef-doef jé-jé musiek nie. Goeie Afrikaans. Dankie tog beide in lirieke en in gesprek is daar ’n afwesigheid van slenguitdrukkings en lui gebruik van Engels tussenin. Daar is nie tjoklits en babies in sy liedjies nie. Engels kom egter net so gemaklik, van sy lirieke het al topverkopers
geword, soos die Coleskes se Take me where the sun is shining. Helfte van die liedjies op die Coleskes se eerste CD het Swiegers se lirieke. Hy beplan juis om eersdaags ’n splinternuwe Engelse CD vry te stel. Hopelik vind sy nuwe Armageddon darem ook ’n plekkie vir die voet, dalk word dit sy nuwe treffer, met sy magiese ritme en sterk vertelling. Kan ons uitsien na ’n sagter Swiegers? Dit klink amper so. Tog is sy lirieke nie marshmallow styl sousige, soetsappige woorde nie. ’n Tikkie sinisme skyn deur maar dit is ’n fyn aanvoeling gemeng met realisme wat praat. Christmas carols with Mimi The Bel Canto Ensemble will perform well-known Christmas songs under the personal direction of the founder of the ensemble, Mimi Coertse on 9 December at the Atterbury Theatre. The ensemble consists of six beautiful voices including Louette Johnston, Loveline Madumo, Veramarie Meyer, Jonathan Watkins, Given Mabena and Mziyanda Zita. They will share the stage with 12 other angelic voices and will be accompanied by the gifted pianist, Willem Luitingh. Nissan Pathfinder is tough and rugged The Stoney Ridge Off-road Academy just outside Colenso in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands recently played host to the Nissan Pathfinder, and threw down a gauntlet the mid-size SUV simply couldn’t refuse. With a host of demanding offroad driving trails - from mud pits and river crossings to rock climbs and sandy trails - Stoney Ridge is widely regarded as a tough proving ground with over 200km of off-road trails with varying degrees of difficulty. Insure tyres against damage They lie in wait on the roads, around every turn and over every blind rise, waiting to trip up the unsuspecting motorist and cost you money. Prestigious award for employee Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) human resources employee Liza Wilmot has won a prestigious accolade at the 56th gala convention of the HR industry’s professional body, the Institute for People Management (IPM). Wilmot, Volkswagen’s Production Academy manager, received the coveted Human Resources Business Partner of the Year award. With just four awards presented, including CEO of the year, HR director of the year and branch of the year, Wilmot beat other nominees from around the country who were interviewed by a panel of judges which included academics, HR gurus and politicians. Wilmot said although she was surprised to have made it all the way after being
nominated by a colleague, the award was a reflection on her 23-strong team which focuses on training and growing employees on the company’s production plant in Uitenhage. The Production Academy falls under Volkswagen’s Learning Academy, which also covers the areas of leadership, technical, commercial and national sales. Die Blou Bulle-rugbyunie se nuwe uitvoerende hoof, Eugene Hare, word deur Johnny Jaftha, verwelkom in Pretoria met ’n spesiale eerbewys.
Likkewane wil die gloriedae laat herleef Koos Venter Korrektiewe Dienste se rugbyklub is een van die oudste klubs in Pretoria met ’n roemryke geskiedenis. Dié klub, wat in hul gloriedae as die ‘Groen Dood’ bekendgestaan het, het twee jaar gelede reeds hul 80e bestaansjaar gevier. Korrektiewe Dienste se eerstespan, wat ook as die ‘Likkewane’ bekendstaan, het al twee keer die Blou Bulle se top liga, die
gesogte Carltonbeker gewen. Die Likkewane het op hul dag verskeie provinsiale spelers en ook Springbokke soos Moaner van Heerden, Deon Oosthuizen, Drikus Hattingh en Henry Tromp opgelewer. Weens verskeie faktore het die rugbyklub van Korrektiewe Dienste die afgelope jare egter deur diep waters gegaan. Dié klub se huidige voorsitter en ook pas herkose visepresident van die Blou Bulle, Johnny Jaftha, glo egter dat hulle
die draaipunt in die afwaartse kurwe bereik het en dat die klub nou weer op pad boontoe is. Hulle speel tans in die Blou Bulle se eerste liga, waar hulle vanjaar weer die halfeindrondte gehaal het. Jaftha glo egter hulle is op pad terug Carltonliga toe. Daar word tans groot planne gemaak om die klub se spelerstal weer uit te bou en Korrektiewe Dienste is ook ’n sogenaamde ‘oopklub’, wat beteken dat enige speler kan
aanmeld om in dié klub se gesogte groen trui te speel. Besoek die klub se webwerf of hul Facebook-blad vir besonderhede. By ’n onlangse funksie van die klub is twee sterk borge ook herbevestig, wat dit vir Jaftha en sy personeel moontlik sal maak om hul nuwe doelwitte na te jaag. By dieselfde funksie het die Likkewane ook hulde aan ’n paar staatmakers gebring wat oor die jare heen baie vir klubrugby in Pretoria beteken het.
Polisie-rugbyklub hou funksie vir slotte Koos Venter
’n Paar rugbylegendes van die Polisie-rugbyklub, beide as spelers en administrateurs, was teenwoordig by die onlangse funksie wat as die ‘dag van die slotte’ bekendgestaan het. Voor sit kol. Katmuis Conradie en generaals Mike Geldenhuys en Ben Alberts. In die middel is Willie Kahts, Schibel O’Reilly, Jack Conradie, Piet Steyn, Dave Pretorius, Kobus Muller en Chris Oosthuizen. Agter is Adri Geldenhuys, Chris Oosthuizen, André Skinner en Toy Dannhauser.
Die Blou Bulle is vir dekades lank al bekend as die slotfabriek van Suid-Afrika. Sewe van die tien Springbokke wat die meeste toetse in die slotposisie vir Suid-Afrika gesak het, was Blou Bulle, terwyl ’n volle 27 (meer as ’n derde) uit die 80 slotte wat oor die afgelope eeu in ’n Springboktrui gespeel het, op een of ander stadium in hul loopbaan ook vir die Bulle gespeel het. Die Pretoria Polisie-rugbyklub het oor die jare weer ’n horde slotte, waarvan ’n hele paar Springbokke geword het, vir die Blou Bulle opgelewer. Dink maar aan harde manne soos Adri Geldenhuys en Johan Ackerman. Om hierdie rede het die oud-Bloubul agtsteman en veteraan administrateur van
die Pretoria Polisie, Katmuis Conradie, besluit om dié klub se jaarlikse rugbyfunksie ‘die dag van die slotte’ te noem. Geldenhuys was juis een van die gaste by die funksie. Ander bekende oudprovinsiale slotte was André Skinner en Toy Dannhauser. Verskeie oudspelers van die Polisierugbyklub, wat heelwat slotte ingesluit het, was teenwoordig by dié funksie wat by die Bosveld Lapa, oud-Bloubul Willie Kahts se kuierplek langs Hoërskool Langenhoven, aangebied is. Daar is heerlik gekuier en stories oor die goeie ou rugbydae is weer opgediep. Dit was duidelik dat die meeste slotte, soos vandag nog, deur die jare altyd maar moeilike manne was wat nie op die rugbyveld verkeerd opgevryf moes word nie.
Mixed team is mountain bike champs Spirits were high at Oak Valley (Elgin) recently where an impressive field of mountain bikers gathered for the third and final stage of the 2012 Contego Wines2Whales MTB Race powered by Maserati. Team USN Inov-8’s Carla van Huyssteen and Philip Buys from Pretoria claimed their second stage win for the weekend and the title of 2012 champions in the mixed team category with a combined finishing time of 10:24:39. According to Van Huyssteen stage three was tough, but fun. “For most of the day Philip and I would make up time on the single track, only to be caught by Yolande de Villiers and Johan Labuschagne on the open flat sections.
“They are really strong on the road. That’s the one section where Philip really had to help me on. “We managed to pull away at approximately the 55km mark and then maintained our lead. The Wines2Whales was a lot of fun. It was great seeing the intense battle between the women’s teams and the competition was really strong. “This was my first three-day MTB race and it was awesome, from the organisation to the routes. You can see that much effort went into staging this race,” said Van Huyssteen. Team J&Y were placed second after three days of racing, with Team Gogo and Gramps claiming the final spot on the podium.

Road-runner wins prize: a brand new car Road-running queen, Rene Kalmer, has won the Spar Grand Prix for the third time, winning herself the dream prize of a new Nissan Micra. Kalmer’s victories in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban and Pretoria gave her 110 points and put her in a position where she could not be overtaken on the grand prix ladder. She had hoped to become the first person to make a clean sweep of all five Spar Women’s Challenge races, but had to withdraw from the Johannesburg race because of an Achilles tendon injury, which put her out of action for at least two weeks. “I was bitterly disappointed that I couldn’t run, but at least I had made sure of my position on the grand prix ladder,” said Kalmer before she received the car. “It has always been my dream to win a car. When I heard that this year’s prize was a car, I made up my mind that I was going to be the one to take that car home.” Her grand prix win is the culmination of a year in which Kalmer has dominated women’s road running in South Africa. “I’ve had an awesome 2012,” she said.
“Now I’m looking forward to another good year in 2013. I’m especially looking forward to the world championships in Moscow in August. I’ve never been there before, so that will be a great adventure.” 2010 and 2011 grand prix winner, Irvette van Zyl (formerly Van Blerk), won the Joburg Challenge race in 34:34 minutes to clinch second place on the grand prix ladder, with 74 points. She receives prize money of R30 000. “I was in fourth position on the ladder, so I’m very excited that I was able to move up into second place,” said Van Zyl after the Joburg race. Kalmer’s younger sister, Christine, finished third, with 71 points, Zintle Xiniwe fourth with 68 and Nolene Conrad fifth with 60. Annie Bothma won the junior category with 13 points, and the evergreen Sonja Laxton, who has run 76 Spar Women’s Challenges, won the grandmasters’ prize with 30 points. With its runners taking the first three places, Nedbank CGA easily won the club competition, with a total of 292 points.

Junior stoeiers na Europa Belowende jong stoeiers van Noord-Gauteng, Mpumalanga en Oos-Gauteng het onlangs op ’n toer na Europa vertrek om aan ’n reeks toernooie en oefenkampe deel te neem. Hoewel hulle meestal tussen 12 en 14 jaar oud is, het hulle almal ’n reeks prestasies agter die blad op nasionale gebied. Hulle is meestal Suid-Afrikaanse kampioene of medaljewenners en daar word gepoog om hulle voor te berei vir moontlike deelname aan die Olimpiese Spele in 2020 en 2024. Internasionale blootstelling op hierdie ouderdom raak strategies belangrik, omdat baie van hulle reeds op 16- en 17-jarige ouderdom aan die jeugwêreldkampioenskap gaan deelneem. Hulle moet reeds op ’n jong ouderdom gewoond raak aan die vreemde tale van skeidsregters en die gehalte van tegnieke elders in die wêreld. Dit bly steeds ’n uitdaging vir die jong stoeiers om op die Europese standaard te kom as gevolg van die afstande, geld en logistiek, aangesien stoeiers nie in tyd of afstandstandaarde gemeet word nie, maar slegs op die mat teen vreemde teenstanders. Die hoëvlak toernooie in Duitsland en Nederland waaraan hierdie groep stoeiers gaan deelneem, sluit ook stoeiers van sover as Finland, Italië, Pole en Rusland in. Reeds sedert 2006 word jong stoeiers van 12 tot 15 jaar na die buiteland geneem vir internasionale blootstelling met stoeitoere wat ’n kulturele program insluit. Dié stoeiers vorm die kern van die junior nasionale spanne.
Harlequins-rugbyklub is tans die oudste aktiewe rugbyklub in Pretoria. As deel van die vieringe van die klub se 110e bestaansjaar in 2013 beplan die bestuur ’n interessante en ondernemingsvolle jaar. Die klub se bestuur het onlangs ’n nuwe vyfjaarplan goedgekeur om Harlequins se toekoms en sukses te verseker. Daar is ook reeds drie groot borge betrek om die plan deur te voer. Nuwe afrigters vir 2013 is ook onlangs aangewys. Die eerstespan (Carltonbeker) afrigters vir 2013 is Bennie Burger en Rassie Erasmus. Albei hierdie afrigters het reeds hul merk in Carltonbeker-klubrugby gemaak. Harlequins-rugbyklub is reeds die afgelope paar weke besig met hul voorseisoenprogram. Heelwat nuwe spelers het reeds by die oefeninge aangemeld. As een van die top oopklubs in die Blou Bulle se ligas, kwalifiseer Harlequins ook om volgende jaar aan die gesogte Predatorreeks deel te neem, wat met die beloofde TV-dekking nuwe moontlikhede vir oopklub spelers sal bring.
Die tweede span se afrigters vir 2013 is Quinten Bye en Renier Vermaak, met Herman Dannhauser en Christo Greyling wat die derde span sal brei. Die Madalas (veterane-span) sal weer onder die bekwame hand van Martin White, afrigter/speler, die nuwe seisoen aanpak en sorg dat die beker ook in 2013 weer in Harlequins se trofeekas sy staan kry. By die onder-ouderdomme (o.21 en o.19) het Quins vir Ben Loubsher, Jacques du Preez en Billy Beukes, ’n oud-Blou Bulspeler, aangestel. Harlequins se klubhuis is onlangs opgegradeer. Dit sluit hul vyfster restaurant, The Harlequin, en kroeë in. Hierdie fasiliteite is oop vir die gemeenskap van Dinsdae tot Sondagaande. Oudspelers kom gereeld elke tweede Vrydag van die maand bymekaar vir middagete by die klub. Die bestuur nooi graag alle vorige Quins-spelers en nuwe belangstellende spelers om aan te meld vir hierdie evaluering. Oefeninge vind op Maandae en Woensdae van 18:00 by die klub se velde in Totiusstraat, Groenkloof plaas.

Titans se lot in eie hande Koos Venter Met nog drie ligawedstryde wat vir die Nashua Titans oorbly in die Momentumeendagreeks, is hulle in die gelukkige posisie dat hulle lot nou in hul eie hande is. Afhangende van die weerstoestande in hul laaste drie wedstryde, moet die Titans net met die Knights in Kimberley, die Dolphins in Centurion en die Cape Cobras in die Paarl afreken om â&#x20AC;&#x2122;n tuis halfeindstryd te verseker. Die Titans het verlede week hul wisselvallige vertonings in diĂŠ reeks voortgesit, toe hulle eers Vrydagaand met sewe paaltjies teen die Highveld Lions verloor het, net om daarna Sondag in Benoni weer hul koppe op te tel en die Warriors met sewe paaltjies te klop. Teen die Highveld Lions was dit die Titans se boulers wat die skuld vir die nederlaag moes kry, nadat die kolwers
â&#x20AC;&#x2122;n baie verdedigbare 255 lopies aangeteken het. Farhaan Behardien was die groot uitblinker met sy 102 lopies van 116 balle. Met Quinton de Kock (115), Gulam Bodi (54) en Neil McKenzie (47) aan die spits het die Lions egter net 37 boulbeurte nodig gehad om die Titans se boulers te laat les opsĂŞ. Sondag in Benoni het sake egter andersom verloop. Die Warriors het, met nege paaljies plat, daarin geslaag om vir 50 boulbeurte te oorleef, waarin hulle 241 lopies aangeteken het. Hierdie keer was die Titans se boulers egter strate beter, met veral Roelof van der Merwe wat sy gesukkel van Vrydag in Johannesburg behoorlik reggestel het. Van der Merwe, wat inderdaad â&#x20AC;&#x2122;n goeie seisoen beleef, het Vrydag net twee boulbeurte gekry om sy draaiballe op die Lions los te laat, maar hy is met
