If you asked Lee Handoko, or Han, if he ever thought of being a vaping products distributor in early 2013, he would probably tell you no. So, what made him suddenly interested to enter this business. Let’s have chat with Han, founder of Vapehan, one of Indonesia’s most trusted vaping products distributors. Text Reiner Rachmat Ntoma

What gave you the idea of entering the vaping products distribution business? I started back in 2013. Before being a distributor for vaping products, I was already an established distributor for imported toys from China. One day, one of my suppliers asked me whether I was interested in importing vaping goods, which at that time were vape pens. I thought, why not try by ordering 5000 units at first. I never thought that it would be such a hit. Then, I tried ordering twenty thousand and then increases to a container for each order. Starting from 2014, I also started to expand into atomizers, e-liquids and also raw materials for e-liquids.
Always remember that low prices do not mean they don’t have good quality and vice versa, expensive goods do not guarantee its quality is above cheaper ones.

What do you think about the competition between vaping products distributor in Indonesia. It is safe to say that, as fellow distributors, we don’t see each other as rivals. on the contrary, we help each other a lot. Meaning that, we supply each other with goods one might find hard to get by. So it is fair to say that there is no competition between us. Have you ever encounter any difficulties while importing vaping products to Indonesia? In the beginning, I did have some difficulties because at that time, there wasn’t any regulations concerning vaping products. At that time, we had difficulties while trying to import vape device, and now we still have difficulties because of the lack of regulations for it. But slowly, Customs begin to understand what vape devices are, easening the process. It is also due to the introduction of the regulation on excise for e-liquids, so the purpose of a vape device is pretty clear, to use it as a vaping tool.
Where do you usually import vaping products from? Mainly from China, the United States and lately from Malaysia. But most customers ask for products originating from China. It is no denying that Chinese products have falirly good quality but with an affordable price.

What is your take on the 57 percent for the excise tariff on e-liquids? I think is for a good cause beacuse now vape has become legal, making it easier for us distributors. In addition, our sales have increased since the implementation of the excise tariff. Besides that, now we,
Do you have anything to say to fellow distributors, the government or maybe vapers reading this? To fellow distributors, let’s keep our integrity and not topple each other because we are a community that similarly wants to develop the vaping products industry in
Indonesia. For vapers, to be able to choose goods that are suitable for your benefits and not for mere consumptive reasons. Always remember that low prices do not mean they don’t have good quality and vice versa, expensive goods do not guarantee its quality is above cheaper ones. To the government, I hope that the regulation on vape device can be introduced immediately, because even though vape is considered legal with the existence of excise ribbons on e-liquids, we distributors would feel safer if all aspects of this business are protected by the law.

But who that its founder, Budianto, or more known as Budi started as a someone who just liked to vape as a hobby and now turns into one of the biggest vaping products distributors in Indonesia? Let’s hear out Budi’s story about his ups and downs in building JVS from the beginning to become one of the most trusted vaping products distributors in Indonesia! Text Reiner Rachmat Ntoma 14

What inspires you to get involved in the vaping products industry? I started vaping in 2014 when my brother introduced it to me, I was immediately drawn to it. As I was very drawn to it, the many things that I needed to vape also increased. So, I tried buying vaping products in wholesale, starting from e-liquids. The remains that I don’t use, I sell it online through online stores. I never thought it would turn into
a big hit. Then one of my customers asked me whether I should start opening a physical store. So, then I set up a small shop in Fatmawati, South Jakarta which will later become the Jakarta Vapor Shop that we all know today. It was an instant hit as many visitors came to the shop. Even though most of them at that time were only visiting to get information on vaping, but they eventually came to buy things. In 2015, I started to expand my business
by producing my own e-liquid named Susu Bro and from there, I started to become a distributor. I only started to distribute Susu Bro, but then many other vape stores asked me to help supply them with other vaping products. So, it was then JVS started to distribute other vaping products.

What do you think about the excise on vaping products? I think it’s an advantage for us vape store owners and distributors because now selling vaping products is easier and more guaranteed. In the early days where the vape store industry just started, the authorities always come to our stores and inspect us because they accuse us of selling illegal products. I too was a victim of it, even forcing me to relocate my distribution business and set up my store in Malaysia because the business wasn’t going well in Indonesia. But now that vaping has been legalized by implementing excise on vaping products, those who are involved in the vaping products industry can be relax because now we don’t have to worry about being inspected. Nowadays, inspections are only exercised to vape stores who are still selling e-liquids without excise. But I’m pretty sure that there aren’t many of them anymore. Other than inspections, have ever had any other problems as a distributor or as a vape store owner? It was really hard to import vaping products back then because there wasn’t any regulations concerning the matter yet. Most of the time, the products that we’ve already ordered were not allowed to be claimed because it has not
been verified as a product that are allowed to be imported in Indonesia. Moreover, the sentiment over e-cigarettes being more harmful than conventional cigarettes back then was still very popular among Indonesians, even identifying them as illegaly as drugs. But now that there is a regulation on vaping products, I haven’t have any encounter with such probelms anymore. In your opinion, do you think vape devices should also be excised? For now, I think it does not, because the industry is still growing. I think that e-liquids being excised for now is good enough. But if later on the industry has grown so much and become uncontrollable that it needs more provision, then yes vape devices should also be excised. But like I said, right now the industry is still growing, if we implement it now, there’s a possibility that it would rather kill the industry, not helping it to grow. So, for now I think is more important to focus on growing profits from the industry. What is your view on clone products? Well, I’ve had some fair share of encounters with clone products. When i started this business, I was prone to getting misguided of believing clone products as authentic ones by my suppliers. With the existance of these clones, for us distributors, is very disturbing, because if we are caught selling clone products, the consumers might not want to buy from us anymore and would probably not trust us anymore. But now, based on my experience with clones, I believe I can now differentiate them from authentic ones. I have become more selective in chosing which suppliers to work with, too.

It can’t be denied that now pod mods are getting popular. Do you think this will affect the sales of other vape devices? It should be understood that pod mods are targeted to smokers who are looking for alternatives to conventional cigarettes. So, the market that they are aiming consists of smokers who wants to quit or would like to transition to vape. Meanwhile, vapers who really just vape will always look for devices that produces thicker clouds and better flavor delivery. So it’s fair to say that the pod mod has created a new market in the vaping industry, but still very related to the general market itself as there is the possibility of a pod mod user to try and rather switch to conventional vape devices once they get used to it. Last question, do you have anything you would like to say to our readers? For those involved in the
vaping product industry, always be consistent to not selling vaping products to minors only for gaining a bit more profit for themselves, because as a businessman in this industry, we should always put the growth of this industry as our main goal. If vaping products are considered to be a problem to society, there’s always the possibility of this industry to be banned again. For fellow distributors, always keep the integrity by doing business fairly. Lastly, for the government, I hope that the excise price would not increase soon, because if it exceeds more than it is now, those who have transitioned to vape might go back to smoking, thinking that conventional tobacco products are cheaper than vaping products.

Can you tell us how you became interested in the vaping products industry? Before getting involved with vaping products, I started as an IT product distributor from 2002. In 2014, I was indtroduced to vaping by one of my relatives.After I tried it, I felt its benefit and it helped me quit smoking. In th beginning I was purchasing vaping products in large quantity for myself and began to promote it to my closest friends from my community by persuading them to use vaping products to quit smoking. Then, they too started promoting to their friends, I started to purchase in more larger quantity, which made me decide to become a distributor.
If you hear the name JUALVAPE, vapers would know that the products that they are getting are quality products. But who would expect that Susanto, better known as Santo was only trying to get his friends to switch to vaping from smoking before becoming one of the most trusted vaping products distributors in Indonesia? As a vaping products distributor, have you ever had any difficulties? Thankfully, I haven’t had any problems when importing vaping products. I hold a license as a certified importer since I started as an IT product distributor which I also use to import vaping products. This license is proof that I am a trusted importer which will never be problematic.
Do you have any plans for your business that hasn’t been realized yet? Lately, I was offered to distribute e-lqiuid manufacturing machineries. Seeing the local e-liquid industry growing so fast, I think that this would become a great business opportunity. I also have a plan to set up a distribution branch in other countries, especially in China because it’s fair to say that there the vaping product industry. So, That will facilitate the distribution line from China and on the other hand i can help promoting the local vaping product there.

Can you tell us about JUALVAPE’s e-liquid brand, level five? Actually, since 2015, i had wanted to start producing my own e-liquid. But, back then i did not understand how e-liquid distribution and marketing work effectively. I also, in that time, did not have enough team member. But, now the team has grown and I also have started to understand the ins and outs. Finally, in 2018, I decided to produce my own e-liquid with the name level five. It can be said that i am already in the business of e-liquid and I am optimistic because level five is welcome by vapers. Now, Vape has been legalized by the excise band of 57 percent of the e-liquid. Does that make any different in vaping product distribution then and now? Before, I’ve had to get my store inspected by the authorities, not because they suspect me of selling illegal goods, but because back then there wasn’t any regulation that can back the industry. You can say that, selling vaping goods before was considered a grey area, it’s legal yet also illegal. Not only on
the distribution side, but also promoting it was very difficult, something that still goes on today. Vaping products are still considered as a tobacco derivative product, thus you can’t promote it freely. But the development of social media as promoting means has helped us in promoting our porducts. Lastly, Do you have anything you would like to address to fellow distributors or maybe to the government, or yet to Indonesian vapers? To fellow distributors, let’s compete fairly by not forging the product prices. Distributors must help each other and work together because our main goal is not to make a profit for ourselves, but to build the our industry that we’ve helped grow into a
larger industry, leaders in this industry if we can. For vapers, always keep your attitude when vaping, never feel that you can freely vape anywhere you’d like to just because you are vaping. Even smokers have to smoke in dedicated areas only. The point is, don’t ever feel yourselves more superior then smokers, let’s just position ourselves indefferently with them, only that our choice is much safer for our health. For the government, I hope that its support to the industry does not stop to putting excise bands on e-liquids, but also supporting home industries to develop their business. Who knows that one day, vaping products from Indonesia can be popular and favored by vapers all over the world.

“E-Cigarette” Country Soon Expands Vaping Ban
Teks Reiner Rachmat Ntoma Regulations That Easily Goes On and Off Ever since Hon Lik popularized it in 203, the use of e-cigarette widely spreads across the country. There even was a time where e-cigarettes were more popular than conventional cigarettes. However, because it was considered out of control, the Chinese government decided to “limit” the use and circulation of e-cigarettes in China. Meaning, the use of e-cigarette is not prohibited, but the circulation and distribution of e-cigarettes is limited to being sold only in designated e-cigarette stores. But the ban was only

effective for a few moment as the era of online shopping arrived, vaping products were sold online and were not affected by the ban. In the end, the ban itself became irrelevant and forgotten. The circulation and distribution of e-cigarettes became even frequent and were available literally anywhere not specifically in designated stores anymore. Due to this rise of popularity for online shopping, the e-cigarette industry, specifically vaping products have grown significantly in China. Frankly speaking, almost 60 percent of the world’s vaping products come were made in China. In 2016, China made a new regulation that emphasizes the limited ban was still in effect and will also be implemented to online sellers in which will be punished if not following the new regulation. But the regulation ended up being very weak as online sellers would later
migrate to international online shopping sites to avoid controlling by the Chinese government who are very strict concerning internet contents shown to its public. The regulation was later revised in 2017, stating that online sellers are only allowed to sell vaping products to buyers who are live outside of China. The new policy was proven effective in decreasing the circulation of vaping products inside the country. Consumers were forced to buy vaping products only in vape stores. But the problem that was thought to be solved, turned out to cause another problem. Imitation goods and cloned products were sold freely in black markets across China, causing vaping products once again be “freely” circulated. To worsen the situation, these cloned products were popular among underaged customers as they were not only much cheaper, but were also easy
to find as they were sold freely, even in grocery stores. This problem became more serious when many parents demanded the Chinese government to act firmly to the situation and issue a new regulation. They demanded that vaping products should be banned because it inflicts their children and that its use were not as beneficial as it was intended to be, as an alternative to smoking. The “Source” of E-Cigarette Incidents Probably it is due to the lack of control on vaping products usage or maybe conscience of its users, there has been a number of incidents involving vaping products in China. In 2018, at least two incidents of inappropriate use of vaping products caught the attention of the public. The first case involved a co-pilot of Air China who, because of his decision to vape in the cockpit, had caused the airplane flight

The modern e-cigarette that we know today comes from the idea of a Chinese pharmacist, Hon Lik. Today, China has become one of the biggest, if not the biggest e-cigarette producing country in the world right now. Even so, China is currently facing a dilemma. The prohibition of e-cigarette usage has now been widely introduced all across the country. In the near future, we might possibly see China banning it permanently.

The co-pilot intended to turn off the circulation fan located between the cockpit and the cabin but accidentally turned off the air conditioner which caused the activation of the emergency landing mechanism and deployed the oxygen masks. Although he finally realized his mistake by quickly turning the air conditioner back on and the airplane was able to fly back on mormal altitude, but the oxygen masks couldn’t be returned to its normal condition. As a result, the passengers were forced to continue their journey with the oxygen masks dangling from above their heads.
Another similar case of inaproppriate use of vaping products also caused panic in an airplane bound to Changchung from Hangzhou when a passenger was caught vaping inside the toilet. The passenger was caught by one of the cabin crew who noticed smoke was coming out through the door’s gap. The cabin crew then insisted the passenger to open the door immediately, who resisted. After awhile, the door opened and the passenger was immediatly inspected and questioned by the cabin crews who gathered. The passenger was caught to keep a vape pen inside his pocket, in which he later
confessed that he did indeed vaped inside the toilet. For his actions, the passenger was forced to serve a sentence of five days in the airport prison to deter him. But one of the most shocking incident happened in Hong Kong where middle school students publicly confessed that they had been vaping at school, which forced the Government of the Special Administration Region of Hong Kong was to step up and implemented a ban on all vaping products in the region. The Central Government Becomes Dormant, The Regional Government Takes Over The case of middle schoolers from Hong Kong admitting that they’ve been vaping at school during breaks caught the attention of the public. The teachers who found out about their students’ behavior then reported to the Federations of Parent-Teacher Association (FPTA). The FPTA officials complained to the Education Bureau of Hong Kong as the highest education authority due to their failure in stemming the use of vaping products in school areas and overcoming the circulation and sale of vaping products to minors. In response, the Hong Kong Department of Health proposed a regulation to prohibit the use of vaping products entirely last October 2018. This regulation also implies that the circulation, sales, production and promotion of vaping
products are also prohibited in Hong Kong. The Minister of Health, Sophia Chan Siu-Chee explained that this regulation was created based on the Department of Health’s “research results” which stressed that a “new dangerous medical finding” has been found in vaping products. Of course, this statement was controversial, because the “medical finding” that was stressed, the content of formaldehyde in vaping products, has been disproven for a long time. Right now, Hong Kong are preparing a new draft regulation which will be integrated with the its existing Smoking Ordnance, which will include tobacco derivative products (TDP) such as vape, heat-not-burn into the regulation. The draft also implies that the import, production, sales, circulation and promotion of these “new tobacco products” will result in a sentence of six months in jail or a fine of HKD 50,000 (nearly USD 6500). Meanwhile the use of these products in non-designated places or places where smoking are not allowed, will result in a fine ranging from HKD 1500 up to HKD 5000. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuetngor, the Chief Executive of the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong, said that this draft is made to control the use of vaping products, which she stressed it has already been “out of control”, while also preventing minors to gain access to TDP, specifically vape. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor also stressed that the draft was made in accordance with Hong Kong’s ideals, that is to reduce cigarette smoke pollution in the city. Meanwhile, Shenzhen as China’s “Silicon Valley”, has a different approach. In the end of 2018, Shenzhen has expanded its nonsmoking areas. In its newest regulation, smokers are now prohibited to smoke within the premises of public transportation stops or VAPEMAGZ

Prohibited to be Distributed Within, Smuggled from Outside One of the biggest problems that the Chinese government currently faces is the rate of e-cigarette products smuggling into China. In January 2019, The Chinese Police succeeded in uncovering one of the biggest smuggling cases in recent years, involving HNB products IQOS from Japan which is thought to be valued over USD 58 million.

(General Administration of Customs) Customs officers in Ningbo Port successfully uncovered the smuggling of IQOS e-cigarettes from Japan in January 2019. Ti is estimated that this smuggling is worth almost USD 58 million.
The police force in Ningbo Port reported that at least 30 e-cigarette products smuggling by international postal services to Ningbo Port have been uncovered over the span of one year. Based on the information from General Administration of Customs China (GACC), there has been 70 cases of e-cigarette smuggling cases has happened in 2018 alone. Most of these cases involved vaping products that were smuggled from the US via Japan, Vietnam or the Philippines. This of course hurts the Chinese Governments integrity concerning its ban on local sales and circulation of vaping products. The Chinese Government is publicly known to control and supervise online contents to its public, including online trading, yet online sellers still found a loophole by seliing them personally to potential buyers by private messaging through social media. This loophole is said to be commonly practiced by online sellers, posing themselves as dropshippers. This contributes to the high rate of vaping products smuggling in China, from just a few units to hundreds of units. With the increasingly asservative local governments responding to the uncontrolled circulation of e-cigarettes, it may be time for the Chinese
Government to start thinking of creating a new regulation that can benefit all parties, both those who oppose vaping products and vapers alike. Vaping in China? Go Ahead, But... If you want to travel to China and bring along your vapin kits, make sure that you put it inside a clear bag and that all components are all fully disassembled. Make sure that the batteries are not intact inside your vape mod. When asked by the customs officers once you arrive at the airport, give them a clear explanation that the vaping kits that you brought are for your own personal use. If you do not explain it clearly, you might be allegedly suspected of attempted smuggling to sell it in China which can face you with a jail sentence or fine. As for e-liquids, make sure that you put them inside a container that is not covered by any label so that the content can be visible. Even so, customs officers may confiscate your e-liquid because it might not be listed as a legal product. It is really like a doubleedged sword, therefore it is recommended that you just purchase e-liquids in local vape stores that are scattered all over China. But don’t expect it to be sold at an affordable price. Finding vape stores in China is fairly easy. In most of its largest cities, vape
stores are a very common site, some of them are even operating 24 hours. But do be careful if you plan to shop for vaping products in China. Make sure that the product that you are buying are authentic products as vape store owners will shamelessly sell you cloned products along with authentic ones. It is recommended that you ask the store attendant information on the product you are trying to buy to make sure of its authenticity. Cloned products may look similar and cost cheaper than authentic ones, but ask yourself whether keeping yourself healthy and safe is worth the cost? Of course not. You should always pay attention to the local regulation concerning vaping. Various cities has their own stand on vaping, but mostly vaping is allowed where smoking is allowed. Even so, do mind your attitude and make sure that you’ve adjuste your device to produce a slight amount of cloud, because not everyone in the smoking designated area are too keen on big vaping clouds which make them feel uncomfortable. Do remind yourself that, even though vaping is moslty wellreceived in China, most of its population are still very conservative that they may look at you unpleasantly when you’re vaping.

Hangzhou has a much more extreme approach towards, the city has already made e-cigarettes as equivalent to conventional cigarettes since 2017. The sales, circulation and use of e-cigarettes in nondesignated smoking areas in Hangzhou will result in a fine of RMB 30,000 or nearly USD 4500. Other cities in China have also begun to emulate Hangzhou’s approach while others are preparing similar regulations.

But since Italian law forbids smoking in public transportation, the movie’s production team was forced to abide by that law. According to Kenneth Branagh, who played Hercules Poirot and the director of the same movie, Depp specifically said that he was reluctant if he is to promote tobacco product in the movie. Depp argued, smoking or not, his version of Edward Ratchett will not seem different than of the novel written by Agatha Christie, the same novel who inspired the movie adaptation. In his latest movie, Fantastic Beast: The
Crimes of Grindelwald, Depp also showed that he’d rather vape than smoke. In a scene in the movie, Depp who plays as Gellert Grinderwald is seen blowing a cloud that maybe identified more to be a shisha device. But that scene was actually altered from the original script that only required Grindelwald to look deep to the skull-shaped hookah which will blow smoke from its mouthpiec. After a discussion, both the production team and cast felt that, even though this was a movie about magic, it would not make any sense if it was only said that the skull was reacting without anyone doing anything to it. In the end, director David Yates decided to make it more
comprehendable by making as if Grindelwald was blowing vapor from the skull, which Depp agreed. The scene was then changed to the scene that we all know, Grindelwald blowing vapor from, what Depp called, “one of the earliest vape devices known to man.” Depp called it as is due to the historical background which the movie took place, that is the 1930’s where vape was not yet known or has not been invented yet, nor has it even been thought of yet. Richard Jay De Jesus, also known as “RJ” or “Panda”, is a modder from the Philippines and the creator of the WICK’D RDA. His love and passion for vape is second to none, while being mostly talked about for his dedication and hard work, he stays as humble as your friendly neighbor. We had a chance to talk with RJ and what inspired him to become a modder. Check it out.

Text Reiner Rachmat Ntoma Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you come to be a modder? I started modding around 2013, doing drip tips with my friend Al Ungria under the brand name Critical Minds. Then we started with a capital of 500usd to produce drip tips and that is when we started to venture out with other products such as RDA, mech mods and even high end stabilized wood mods. Around 2016, we decided to bid our farewell as he wants to enter the car scene so i decided to work with a Japanese modder, Mr. Masaya Ooki and we established Divine Mods. We made RDTA’s and RDA such as Ashura RDTA, Ashura EVO, Kira RDA and Kaonashi RDA. Around 4th quarter of 2018, I decided to do my own brand with the help of #MMM admin Mark Farraj and we introduced WICK’D brand in the market.
What inspires you to design your own RDA? I started vaping around 2011 when there are not much technology being introduced in the market, the atomizers were not as advanced as what we have now and we can only do certain things. I was inspired to create atomizers because I want to showcase my designs to the vapers and show that there are still room for improvement in our vaping style. Most modders also only give attention to the vape device itself, while forgetting that atomizers also play a major part in delivering the best vaping experience. That’s where I decided to plunge into. Where do you get your inspirations in designing your RDAs? Our mind plays tricks on us, most of the time the ideas, concepts and design just pops VAPEMAGZ

out of my mind or whenever I watch some engineering shows on Youtube or on television but I cannot deny that there are some ideas that I am inspired from other modder’s works. We are only working with a small devices and it is nearly impossible to reinvent the wheel. Can you tell me what differs Wickd RDA from other RDAs in the market? WICK’D is an atomizer that I think can cater a lot of vaping styles, from loose to MTL airflow preference. Giving the people experience of having a versatile atty, to be able to adopt to their desired airflow intake, not the other way around. With its various customization choices, vapers can find the right combination to suit their own style.

Do you have anything to say to fellow modders or those who are inspired to become a modder? I would like to advice my fellow colleagues and the other aspiring modders to continue innovating and pursue the passion. Never give up until you find the perfection that you wish. It might take longer than you initially intend it to be, but in the end, it will give you a very much paidoff satisfaction for it. Always listen to your end-users for improvements as they are the kings in this community. We make these not only for 46

Do you have a certain style/certain detail that distinguishes your designs to others? Most people find it weird to vape but i like single-sided airflow since it gives me more working space to add more details inside the deck. I think that is one of my signature style, design-wise.

Its goal is to strengthen the friendship and brotherhood between vapers community and fellow vapers in the East Java region. The Head of Sahabat APVI Jatim, Ani Hayuni said that East Java is one of Indonesia’s vapers’ “hot beds”, but it is rarely exposed. Therefore, this event is intented to enable vapers in East Java to get to know each other and

from Artha Rangers. The event was also enlivened with a cloud chasing competition that drew more than 30 enthusiastic participants from all regions of East Java. The East Java Vapers United Vapemeet event was met with positive feedbacks from East Javanese vapers. Several who attented hoped that such vapemeet could be held as often as possible, or at least as an annual event in East Java. Ani Hayuni also hoped that someday this kind of event could be held at a national-scale which will bring together vapers from all over Indonesia.

Scott Gottlieb Resigns from FDA, A New Light for the US Vape Industry? Scott Gottlieb has announced his resignation as the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) Commisioner. His resignation will take effect as per April 2019. This sudden announcement not only shocks vapers, but also other FDA superiors who have praised Gottlieb for his agressiveness in the war against e-cigarette consumption among teenagers. that Gottlieb has sopken with the President himself, Donald Trump, concerning his resignation. Trump has stated his satisfaction for Gottlieb’s work as FDA Commisioner and hates to see him go. However Trump also agrees that
Gottlieb has had some disagreement towards some of the White House’s decisions, but nevertheless was very respected in the White House. There is a possibility that Gottlieb may be appointed to fill in for other positions that would need his expertise in the future. Gottlieb, in his resignation letter, said that leaving his post as FDA Commisioner was a tough decision. He had to leave his position while in the middle of the battle against e-cigarette consumption among teenagers. Even so, Gottlieb also stated that during his two years tenure as FDA Comissioner, he felt that his life was not completed due to the lack
of time he could spend with his family. “There are no bigger challenges for me to leave this post besides my wife and my three children who needs a father figure more than anyone,” Gottlieb explained. With the resignation of the FDA Commisioner who was known to be coldhearted, questions have been raised concerning the controversial decision of banning flavored e-liqiuid and nicotine content will be proceeded or to be ceased. Absolutely niot. Gottlieb ensures that the FDA will continue its fight against underage vaping. “I think it has been widely recognized that this problem is a major public health issue. And I think the vaping community and the tobacco industry is an existential threat.,” he said. According to Gottlieb, FDA will continue to push its ban against the flavored e-liquid circulation despite him leaving his position as FDA Commisioner. Gottlieb’s Replacement, Also Cold-hearted With Gottlieb’s resignation, the post of FDA Commisioner becomes vacant. But only days after Gottlieb’s announcement, FDA has already found his successor, at least temporarely. The Secretary of Health and Public Services, Alex M. Azar III has announced Norman “Ned” Sharpless would fill in temporarely as FDA Commisioner. Sharpless began his career as The Director of the Lineberger

Sharpless was initially one of the candidates that was considered to replace Gottlieb permanently as FDA Commisioner, but the decision would have to be witheld as it needs the President’s decision and the confirmation from the Senate. Gottlieb revealed that according to FDA’s data in 2018, there’s an increase up to 78 percent in the number of middle-schooler who vapes from 2017 to 2018 and an increase up to 48 percent among high-

Gottlieb Steps Down, Leniency Towards Flavored E-liquids? Many speculated that with the resignation of Scott Gottlieb as FDA Commissioner, the ban against flavored e-liquids would also be lifted. But Gottlieb ensures that it will never happen. “I think the decision to ban flavoerd e-liquids is the best solution we have. I’m sure the FDA will not just reverse the decision that we’ve formulated for months,” Gottlieb argues. The FDA’s decision to ban the circulation of flavored e-liquids has received quite a lot of support from the public. This has been proven by the number of cities and states across the US who have 50

enforced the “Tobacco 21” policy which limits the sale of tobbacco products and its derivatives only to those who are over 21 years old. Many consider it to best the best solution in the absence of a better regulation. The enforcement of the Tobacco 21 policy is the best solution to control the circulation of tobacco products and its derivatives, including vaping products, out of reach from teenagers at this time. Some even goes to extreme measures, like San Francisco’s Anti-Vaping Activists. The Anti-Vaping Activists of San Francisco have proposed a bill to ban the sales of e-cigarettes until further evaluation by the government concering its impact towards

Herrera said that an evaluation is needed to assess the effects of e-cigarettes towards the community, especially teenagers. “These companies may hide behind their reduction of dager, but let’s be clear, their products are opioids. I don’t really want to see them leave this city, I want them to go away,” Herrera said. But Herrera’s statement was challenged by JUUL. As one of the largest e-cigarettes companies in the US that allocates all of its activities in San
Francisco, JUUL stated that the ban on flavored e-liquids in San Francisco since 2018 should have been enough. JUUL thinks that the proposed bill could prevent adult smokers to switch to safer products. “We support the city of San Francisco to severely limit the access to vaping products to teenagers, but they also need to do so towards combustible cigarettes. This bill raises the question, why the city is comfortable with the existence of combustible cigarettes, when we know they kill more that 480,000 Americans per year?” JUUL states in a written statement. NCIG was launched with pod cartridges that has been priced with excise ribbons. “One of the objectives of establishing PT NCIG Indonesia is to be the pioneer to successfully and officially export pods to all of South East Asia,” said Roy. Roy’s objective was agreed by Ganindra Kartasasmita, Chief of Organization and Recruitment Division of The Association of Personal Vaporizer of Indonesia (APVI). “Currently, APVI is promoting an action called “one million vapers every year”, with the hope that every year, the number of smokers switching to vape can reach one million. Foolish Vape Store Burglars Video Goes Viral

arly morning on March 11, 2019, two burglars broke into a vape store in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and has taken a few mods and breaking some glasses. The
burglars actions were caught on video and it has become viral. Taking place at a store called Flamingo Vape, the burglars broke in by breaking the glass of the front door and went inside at about 1 AM, using a crowbar

The male burglar wearing a yellow jacket looked like a construction worker, while the female burglar were wearing ugg boots. They were smart enough to cover up their faces, but not too smart to not bringing a bag to carry the stolen goods. There were many funny incidents occuring in the video, even the store owner didn’t hesitate to show the video publicly to share those unforgettable yet funny moments. One of the funniest moments was when the female burglar, realizing she didn’t have somethig to carry the stolen goods, used a garbage can instead. The burglars did not
realize that at the time, the store’s lights were brightly on, helping the CCTV camera to catch every single moments. They should of went straight to the register where there were lots of cash stored. Instead they just decided to take some displayed vape mods which pretty sure they don’t know how much it is valued. The store owner would give CAD 2,000 to whoever can give information about the two burglars or better, catch them. n March 22, 2019, at Balai Kartini, Kuningan, South Jakarta, Nasty and Hex officially launched the NCIG pod mod. The launch was done to show the two company’s support to the local e-cigarette industry. One of NCIG’s added values is the pod cartridge that has been given official excise ribbons from the Directorate General of Customs and Excise at the Ministry of Finance. When did you start vaping? I started vaping in 2015. That time, I was still an active smoker and one of my friends from Jakarta introduced me to vape when I was on duty there. He was really patient in answering all of my questions about vape. I was also determined to quit smoking that time, so I was instantly interested to start vaping. Thank God, I haven’t smoked since then.

How did you become insterested in becoming a coil builder? You can say that I’m a vape enthusiast and I saw that there is something artistic about vaping that can be appreciated, starting from vape tricks, cloud chasing and coil building. As to why did I chose coil building, at first I was only playing around and tried to build my own coils by watching video tutorials from Youtube. As time goes by, I became so into it and joined the Indo Coil Builders community (ICB). Joining ICB, not only I can appreciate other builders’ work, but also share my knowledge and my work to other coil builders. What gives you an idea to open a vape store? In the beginning, me and my fellow coworkers occasionally held vape meetings and we realized that we had a shortage of vaping products supplies that we want. The number of vapers in Pekanbaru at that time was still small. So, me and two other friends decided to open our own vape store with the idea to supply ourselves of the goods that we need. When we first opened, the store was called “Mods Vape Shop”. As time goes, my two friends stopped investing to the store due to their own personal reasons. So, I decided
to continue this business alone and renamed the store to House of Inhale of HOI. House of Inhale has a very different concept than other vape stores, mind telling us about it? The concept of HOI, beside being a vape store, it also functions as a workshop for building premade coils. It also has a coffee shop that offers quite a variety of menu. At HOI, vapers can hang out, vape while siping a cup of coffee while also learn coil building by watching directly how the Inhale pre-build coils are made. Some of my works are also on display in a gallery that I call Inhale Studio. What do you think of the 57 percent excise tariff? I don’t think any vapers would disagree to it. For me personally, this is like giving vapers a new life. As for the excise tariff of 57 percent, I think there exists pros and cons. But as time goes by, I think vapers and the people involved in this industry will be unconsiously be
accustomed to it. It all leaves to how us vapers and the people in the industry keeps the trust that the government has given us. After all, it is our duty to look after and develop Indonesia’s vaping product industry. Has the implementation of the excise tariff affects House of Inhale in a certain way? I can say that it affected in a very positive way, I feel releaved that now I do my business with ease because the products that I’m selling have been recognized and supported by the government. In the beginning, maybe the implementation caused a slight decrease of sales and this was also felt by other vape stores, too. Before the official announcement of the implementation, me and my vaporistas have informed our consumers relating the adjustment of prices for e-liquids, so they were pretty much accepting it, although most of them never cam back. But that didn’t last long, because most of them came back because the prices that
we give at HOI are quite friendly, Ha ha ha. Other positive impacts, now we can spread the good news about the positive benefits of vape to probable vapers and those who still doubts vaping that vape in Indonesia is now legal and is regulated by the government so it’ impossible that we are selling illegal products at HOI like the perception of many. Lastly, do you have anything to say to fellow vape store owners our fellow coil builders? For those who are struggling in the vape store business as I am, let’s keep our solidarity, keep on supporting each other and always keep the government’s trust by not selling e-liquids containing drugs and to always commit to never sell vaping products to minors, for whatever reason. To fellow coil builders, keep building. Never fear to try new things and dig up your potentials, keep on learning and enjoy the process, from all its failure to its success. VAPEMAGZ

Therion DNA Indonesia Chapter Karawang One of the biggest vapers community in Indonesia right now is probably Therion DNA Indonesia (TDI). With chapters spreading across the nation in all of its major cities, TDI is one of the most active vapers community in Indonesia.

his was also shown by Therion DNA Chapter Karawang (TDICK). TDI’s representative in Karawang City had just celebrated their second anniversary. Of all TDI’s chapters, TDICK is probably the most activities, including routine gatherings to social activities. Thus, TDICK’s second anniversary party was called “Therion DNA Indonesia Chapter Karawang Second Anniversary is Full of Stories.” This is because of the many stories of the many activities that they can tell you in the two years they were formed.

TDICK President, Ikbal Anggara said that TDICK was formed to strengthen the brotherhood between users of the Therion DNA devices in Karawang. Even so, its main vision is to educate the people of Karawang of the benefits of vaping. It’s no secret that the people of Karawang still views vaping somewhat negatively. Therefore, TDICK wants to show a positive image and educate the people of Karawang that vape is not as bad as they think, that there’s so many positive things out of it. Currently, TDICK have about 40 members, a number that can be considered many among other TDI chapters. Even so, TDICK does not make themselves exclusive as they frequently hang out with users other than Therion DNA devices. There is a possibility that they might not use Therion DNA devices now, but maybe later they would be interested to switch to Therion DNA. Ikbal also wishes that the harmony between TDICK members does not end here in its second anniversary, but for as long as possible. Ikbal also wishes that the brotherhood between TDI’s chapters can be maintained and thus not differentiate one with another, because in the end, everyone whishes to maintain the harmony and solidarity among Therion DNA users. Batteries are not a toy and treating them as one can cause serious problems. Evidence of this has been seen all over the world. US Fire Adminstration alone reported 195 separate battery explosions and fires inside e-cigarettes from 20092016 which have caused death and various injuries such as 3rd-degree burns. In a wireless world such as ours, batteries are one of the most important components in an electronic cigarette, cell phone and many other devices. They are replaced constantly and provide the power we need in order to keep vaping, but what happens when a battery vents?
