Strong Curriculum® builds stronger churches through teaching all Scripture to produce spiritually mature believers who measure up to the stature of Christ.

Spiritual maturity isn’t an abstract, unmeasurable idea. In fact, measuring spiritual growth is a Biblical concept. Ephesians 4:13 instructs us to grow spiritually into “the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.” The measuring stick is Christlikeness.

Strong Curriculum follows the seven teaching aims leading to Christlikeness and uses the robust measuring tools laid out in Strong Church: Building and Measuring Mature Disciples (p. 23).

Throughout this catalog you will find icons indicating the aims in which you should primarily see measurable growth for that quarter. Each teacher guide contains these icons along with some measuring sticks to help you effectively teach and achieve measurable results. The takehome papers and other resources include ways for parents to both gauge and encourage their child’s spiritual growth.

Successful businesses today have means of measuring the growth of their products and their companies overall. We can do no less in our most important “business” of helping students reach “the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.”

ESSENTIALS FOR BUILDING STRONG STUDENTS Strong Students builds on Strong Kids by standing on the whole-Bible emphasis that Strong Kids establishes before students enter middle school.

BIBLE SURVEY God’s Word isn’t a bunch of disconnected stories that teach us how to live. God’s Word is a cohesive message that tells the historical and prophetic record of God’s plan for His creation. Every part of the Bible plays an integral role in filling out this message. Strong Students gives each teen a comprehensive view of God’s total plan. That’s why the scope and sequences for middle and high school each include a survey of the whole Bible. With Strong Students, every student will know God’s plan.

BIBLE BOOK STUDIES The books of the Bible are pieces that when put together form the Bible’s full message. Each book serves a purpose and has a unique background and context, so it’s important for students to study the individual books. Students will learn each book’s powerful message from God.

THEOLOGICAL STUDIES Theology refers to what we understand about God and His creation. Since our theology affects our understanding of Who Christ is and where we will spend eternity, it’s vital for students to get theology right. Strong Students takes this belief seriously and includes detailed exposure of the Bible’s theology by organizing the Bible’s material by topic. Teens will form a thorough understanding of what the Bible teaches on its most important topics.

BIBLE INTERPRETATION Many people around the world read the Bible, yet they come to different conclusions about what it says. This isn’t because of a problem with the Bible; it’s because of their hermeneutic—the way they interpret the Bible. Interpreting the Bible correctly is a must, and that’s why Strong Students equips teens with the basic principles of interpreting the Bible literally, historically, and grammatically. As students work through the curriculum, they won’t just learn information to absorb right now; they will receive the keys to unlock the Bible’s message for the rest of their lives.

APOLOGETICS Students are growing up in a world of skepticism. Everywhere they turn, they see attacks against the Bible’s reliability, Biblical origins, and belief in God. Many students simply do not know how to answer skeptics. In Strong Students, apologetics—defending the truths of the Christian faith—has been fused into the fiber of the curriculum. Students will examine current issues, competing belief systems, the problem of evil, and more. No longer will students feel helpless before skeptics. With Strong Students, teens will discover answers to the toughest questions about their faith.

Churches today have a tremendous opportunity to reach teens with God’s Word. When they are exposed to the power of God’s Word, their hearts become fertile soil for absorbing Biblical truth. Strong Students curriculum provides unfiltered Bible truth teens need that will change their lives.

Option 1—Claim Game

1

Teacher Preparation

The Claim

1. Students form a circle. If it is a large group, organize students into several smaller groups.

2. Going around the circle one student at a time, each student makes three claims about themselves. At least one claim must be true, and one must be false.

3. The group decides which claims they believe to be true or false. If time allows, play several rounds and assign points to students for each claim the group identifies incorrectly.

In verse one John establishes three facts about Christ: (1) He is eternal (“In the beginning was the Word”); (2) He is distinct from God (“the Word was with God”); and (3) He is God (“the Word was God”).

Scripture Focus John 1:1–18

4. Discuss how to decide whether a claim is true or false.

ASK: How did you decide whether you thought someone’s claim was true or false?

Read John 1:1 and 18. John deliberately uses the word logos (“Word”). Before Christ, God dealt with Israel on a national level and remained distant from individuals. Christ changed this by becoming man. In one person, God and man were brought together so that Christ acts as our bridge to God. The word logos pictures Christ as the tangible communication of God to man.

ASK: How can we know that the Bible’s claims are true?

5. Transition to the Bible lesson.

Whether we’re in a casual conversation or a heated debate, we all make claims. But just because we claim it, that doesn’t make it so.

Fortunately, there is someone Whose claims are always true: God. God has spoken through His Word and filled it with claims about Himself, eternity, and the whole Creation, all of which are true. In our lesson, we will discover one of God’s bold claims that has huge implications for our lives.

As you teach the lesson, emphasize the personal importance of Christ’s humanity and deity for each student. Because Jesus became human, each of us can have a personal relationship with our Almighty Creator.

Memory Verse “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:1–3).

Steps

Prior to Christ’s incarnation, Israel longed for Messiah to come.

After a divided kingdom, exile, and the struggle to reestablish her national identity, Israel desperately wanted Messiah to restore Israel’s Kingdom. Israel expected Messiah to be a leader like David or Moses, but Messiah’s tasks included actions that could never be accomplished by mere men.

Session Focus

Option 2—True or False Trivia

This session focuses on the first BuildUP aim: Believe the Gospel.

The Gospel demands the humanity and deity of Christ. Christ’s humanity allowed Him to physically die as an equivalent sacrifice for mankind. Christ’s deity provided the infinite righteousness and eternal life necessary to redeem us from sin’s curse to an eternal relationship with God. Salvation depends upon these facts.

This session attacks the subjective view of truth students are taught today. John asserts Christ’s deity as an indisputable fact. Furthermore, John argues that our existence depends on Christ’s deity since “without Him was not any thing made that was made.” John’s argument, then, is that to deny Christ’s deity would be to deny one’s own existence. Such a denial is a logical absurdity.

Gather • True or False Trivia resource; paper and writing utensils.

Steps 1. Organize students into several teams.

BELIEVE THE GOSPEL

Cultural Barrier: Subjective view of truth Measurable Response: The student will explain the importance of Jesus’ humanity and deity in his or her own life.

Memory Verse: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:1–3).

Summary: John begins his Gospel with three famous words: “In the beginning.” These words reference Genesis 1:1, which states that God alone existed when time began. By referencing Genesis 1:1, John makes a similar statement: Jesus existed when time began, because Jesus Christ is God! The validity of John’s claim has eternal consequences for us individually.

John then makes another, equally important claim: Jesus Christ became man. John expresses the union of deity and humanity in Christ by calling Him “the Word.” Words are the building blocks of communication. By calling Christ “the Word,” John establishes that Jesus’ deity and humanity make Him the ultimate communication of God to mankind. Only through Christ can we have a personal relationship with God. These claims impact our lives tremendously.

John’s claims demand a response from each person. Each of us must accept or reject the deity and humanity of Christ. Thankfully, John spends the rest of the book reinforcing these claims as fact.

By placing this passage at the beginning of the book, John presents his thesis and prepares us for what’s ahead—a detailed explanation of Jesus Christ’s life, ministry, and death, all of which verify Him as the Word made flesh.

Measuring Growth: Look for the following indicators that your student understands the importance of Jesus’ nature to their own life.

1. My student can explain Who Jesus Christ is and how that impacts his or her life directly.

2. My student can identify ways to apply this truth to his or her life now.

3. My student displays an increased awareness of and value for God and His Word.
