Legal and Ethical Issues in Counseling Dr. Jennifer Cates, LMFT, LPC Job Title –Associate Professor Education – Ph.D., Counselor Education and Supervision, M.A., Counseling Educational Psychology, University of Nevada, Reno Dissertation – Comparing multicultural with general counseling knowledge and skill competency for students who completed counselor training Expertise – She is a licensed professional counselor, a licensed marriage and family therapist, and an AAMFT Approved Supervisor. Her areas of specialty in terms of teaching are marriage and family therapy and counseling clinical skills and techniques classes, particularly in working with couples (i.e., Emotionally Focused Therapy, Gottman) and cultural/social justice issues in counseling and marriage and family therapy. Her research areas of focus include: teaching cultural competence to counselors in training, social action research (particularly the quantitative and qualitative evaluation of perinatal distress prevention groups for Spanish Speaking women and couples from a low socio-economic status), and white racial identity development (qualitative examination of the identity development of persons who are able to sustain antiracist activism).

Dissertation – The effect of applicant characteristics on employment screening interviews: A field study Expertise – Career counseling and coaching, changing world-of-work, globalization, job hunting, animal-assisted therapies, lots of topics in counseling and training counselors. She has been in this field for 25 years and has been a university professor since 1991. She has worked in both university counseling centers and career planning and placement centers. She has done executive coaching at the Center for Creative Leadership in Colorado Springs, one of the top 10 Leadership Development Institutes in the world. She is a charter member of the Society for Vocational Psychology, a section within the American Psychological Association, and a charter member of Human-Animal Interaction: Research & Practice Group. The Denver native had a private practice in career coaching from the early 1990s up until this year and has done a lot of volunteer work with animal shelters and animal rescue.
