Gentrup to serve as Grand Marshal PG Gentrup was born in Lawrenceburg, Ind., on June 12, 1947 to Flora and Paul (Crack) Gentrup. He was raised on Cook Lane in Lawrenceburg until he was 10 and moved to Cook Ave. in Greendale and lived there until he went into the U.S. Army in 1966. He has one sister, Betty, and a brother, Kenneth (Cruiser) and another brother, Louis, who died at 6 months old. His mom passed away in 1963 and his dad died in 1964 and he was then raised by his mom’s sister and his uncle, Kittie and Kermit Newell. He attended St. Lawrence Grade School and graduated from Lawrenceburg Consolidated High School (LCHS) in 1965 and went to work at the Seagrams Distillery in August 1965 and worked there until he went to work for American Electric Power (AEP) at the I&M Tanners Creek Plant in 1975. He retired from there after 35 years and was a Maintenance/Boiler Supervisor for approximately 22 years. PG moved to Rising Sun in October 1970 and married Paula Curry on Dec. 5, 1970. Paula is the daughter of Henry (Pee Wee) and Dot (Brown) Curry. They lived
on High St. for two years and moved to the mini-farm near the fairgrounds for three years and after the arrival of their son, Brian, in July 1975 they moved to Wilson St. until 1995 when they built their new home at the corner of Cass Union and White Road on land purchased in 1990. They still reside there today. Brian was joined by his little sister, Kelli, in 1978 and they both graduated from Rising Sun High School. Brian graduated from Ball State University and Kelli from Northern Kentucky University. Paula worked at the Public Library for 18 years and then went

He is a life member of the VFW Post #5312; Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) Chapter #71; 40 & 8 Voiture 612; Knights of Columbus (K of C) Council 1231 and since he coordinated a trip to Washington, DC in 2010 for 50 Korean War Veterans he has been a member of their KWVA Chapter #4 and member of the
Rising Sun–Ohio Co. Parks Board that was founded in 1987. Today he serves as the Ohio Co. Veterans Service Officer and has been in that capacity since 2009. PG entered the U.S. Army on Nov. 2, 1966 in Cincinnati, Ohio, and took his basic training at Ft. Knox, Ky., and in January of 1967 he was sent to Ft. Gordon, Ga., for AIT. He then served for 3 ½ months at Ft. Ritchie, Md., which served a facility next to Camp David, the Presidential retreat in northern Maryland. He received his orders to go to Vietnam in July 1967 and reported to California in August 1967 where he flew to Hawaii, Okinawa and into Bien Hoa, South Vietnam. He then flew to Cu Chi, South Vietnam where he joined the 25th Infantry Division for one year of duty and his main duty was riding a “rat patrol” jeep with a M-60 machine gun on convoy security. Bicentennial Royalty to be crowned at the Navy Bean Festival Every festival needs Royalty! This year the Navy Bean Festival will crown a Bicentennial King and Queen and a Festival Queen as part of the City of Rising Sun Bicentennial celebration. The pageants will take place on Friday, Oct. 11 on the Festival Main Stage beginning at 5:45 p.m. A Bicentennial King and Queen pageant will begin at 5:45 p.m. The pageant is sponsored by the Navy Bean Festival and the Rising Sun Ohio County Senior Housing, Inc. Three couples will be considered for the royal title of Bicentennial King and Queen. The couples include: Bob and Grace Browning, Ross and Barbara Smith and Tom and Patsy Smith. All couples are residents of Rising Sun Ohio County Senior Housing located on South Walnut and Poplar Streets in Rising Sun. The crowned couple will receive a crown, sash, flowers and an award of $100. Second place couple will receive flowers and an award of $50; the third place couple will receive flowers and an award of $25. The 2014 Navy Bean Fall Festival Queen will be crowned beginning at 6 p.m. on the Festival Main Stage. Four Ohio County girls are vying for the title of Miss Navy Bean Festival. er’s Office. The named queen will also receive $250 scholarship from Dearborn County Hospital. The Dearborn County Hospital Scholarship will be presented by Doctors Phumeza Msikinya, M.D. and Chris Walcott, M.D. of the Rising Sun Medical Center. The second place winner will receive a $300 award and the third place winner will receive a $150 award all sponsored by the City of Rising Sun Clerk Treasurer’s Office. This year’s festival queen contestants are Riley Bovard, MacKinzie Scott, Anna Slack and Erin Webb. Riley Bovard is the daughter of Trevor and Mickey Bovard. Riley is
a junior at Rising Sun High School. She is a cheerleader and enjoys hanging out with friends and family. She is a member of SADD Club, Spanish Club, Student Council and the National Honor Society and a member of the Rising Sun American Legion Junior Auxiliary. Riley is sponsored by Donita Valentine Realty in Rising Sun. MacKinzie Scott is the daughter of Andy and Theresa Scott. MacKinzie is a junior at Rising Sun High School. She is a cheerleader and enjoys running, listening to music and hanging out with friends. She is a member of 4-H, Junior Leaders, SADD Club, Spanish Club, Na-
tional Junior Honor Society, Student Council and the Prom Committee. MacKinzie is sponsored by Theresa Scott Photography in Rising Sun. Anna Slack is the daughter of Steve and Heather Slack. She is a junior at Rising Sun High School. Anna is a cheerleader and enjoys horseback riding and being with her friends. She is a member of SADD Club, Spanish Club, 4H, Ohio County Classy Clovers 4H Club, Ohio County Junior Leaders, National Honor Society, Student Council, and is a Peer Tutor. Anna is sponsored by Hairitage Salon in Rising Sun. Erin Webb is the daughter of
Bruce and Lana Webb. Erin is a senior at Rising Sun High School. She plays soccer and enjoys spending time with her family, friends and boyfriend. Erin enjoys volunteer work. She volunteers for the Rising Sun Lion’s Club by helping with their annual softball and baseball tournaments. She also volunteers for the Rising Sun American Legion by helping set up for the community Memorial Day services. Erin is sponsored by B&A Tire & Auto in Lawrenceburg. Beans, bands and bicentennial parade - something for everyone! The Navy Bean Fall Festival will be held in downtown Rising Sun and the beautiful Riverfront Park, Friday, Oct. 10, 5 to 10 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 11, Noon to 10 p.m. The City of Rising Sun is currently celebrating its Bicentennial and the festival committee is gearing up for a Grand Bicentennial Celebration. Beans, Bands and the Bicentennial Parade will be at the top of the festivities. The Bean Soup Committee will be serving up 310 gallons of homemade navy bean soup and plenty of cornbread muffins. Soup sales will take place in the bean tent Friday night and Saturday afternoon into the evening. Picnic tables will be available all along the riverfront for dining. The Bicentennial Parade will take place on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 10:30 a.m. Several entries include floats
with Bicentennial themes. This year’s Grand Marshall is PG Gentrup of Rising Sun. PG is the Ohio County Veterans Service Officer and is being honored for his continuous work with local and area Veterans. PG, his wife Paula and their family will be riding on the Bicentennial float. Teachers agree to no pay raise The Rising Sun Ohio County School Board of Trustees met in special session on Wednesday, Oct. 1 in the school administration building. The meeting was needed to ratify the new collective bargaining agreement reached
with the Ohio County Teachers Association on Monday, Sept. 29. It needed to be sent to the state by Friday, Oct. 10. The next regular meeting is Tuesday, Oct. 21. Board members Holt Hoffman, Tim Phelps and Missy Morris approved the
contract with board members Corey Potts and Billy Hayes unable to attend. The teachers agreed to no pay raises but added bereavement and school performance language. Also teachers RISE evaluation days went from two to
five days. Superintendent Branden Roeder reported a $20,000 grant from the Rising Sun Regional Foundation for professional development Five Star series. The school’s NEOLA policy updates were approved.
Ladies of Liberty is a singing troupe dedicated to performing the Andrews Sisters style of music through their own rendition of vocals, hairstyles and costumes and the spirit of patriotism reminiscent of the 1940’s.
