Two arrested on drug charges Late last Friday morning, Oct. 10, Indiana State Police arrested two Ohio County residents at their Pleasant Ridge home on multiple drug charges, said Sgt. Noel Houze, ISP Information Officer.

The arrests were the result of a year-long investigation

Leaf collection begins Oct. 20 Leaf collection within the city limits of Rising Sun will begin Monday, Oct. 20.

The following rules apply: Leaves must be raked and piled in rows along the street or curb for easy access. Do not pile leaves next to mailbox posts, signs or trees with low hanging branches that could interfere with the swing arm.

No garbage or large sticks are to be placed in the leaves.

Leaves will be picked up

on a street by street basis. Homeowners do not need to call to request leaf pickup.

Residents who bag yard clippings and/or leaves are required to use biodegradable paper bags which are available at Valley Supply, Tandy’s IGA, WalMart and Kroger.

Also of note, chipping will stop during leaf pickup season. Small brush pickup will continue. A dumpster for city residents will be available on Saturday, Nov. 1 from 7 to 11

Dr. Gary Scudder retires after 47 years

This past July 1, marked Dr. Gary Scudder’s 47th anniversary as a member of the Dearborn County Hospital Medical Staff. Now, as of September 19, Dr. Scudder has retired from active practice. During his 47+ years as a General Practitioner, he has cared for tens of thousands of patients, doing everything from delivering babies to providing emergency treatment for accident victims.

For many households in Southeastern Indiana, Dr. Scudder seems to be almost part of the family…having cared for multiple generations throughout the decades. To his patients, he was more than just a healthcare provider, he was their friend and trusted advisor. He was always there when they needed him the most.

Born and raised in Ohio County, the Rising Sun High School graduate did not leave Southeastern Indiana for long.

Following high school, he attended and then graduated from Franklin College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biochemistry before entering the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Upon receiving his Medical Degree, Dr. Scudder performed a rotating internship at Brooke General Hospital Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, followed by service with the First Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kansas. Shortly after, he and his division were deployed to Vietnam

where he served as a Battalion Surgeon.

After his return stateside, Dr. Scudder was appointed as the Chief Medical Officer for the Armed Forces Examining Station in Cincinnati. The following year in 1967, he entered into full time private practice at the Ludlow Hill Clinic in Lawrenceburg and became a member of the Dearborn County Hospital Medical Staff. Dr. Scudder practiced medicine full time in Lawrenceburg at the Clinic until the late 1990s when he opened a second office in Rising Sun. Upon its opening in 1999, Dr. Scudder consolidated his two offices into one full time practice at the newly constructed Rising Sun Medical Center, where he also served as Medical Director.

During his 47 year career in Southeastern Indiana, Dr. Scudder held numerous DCH Medical Staff offices

including twice as Chief of Staff. He currently serves as the Dearborn County Health Officer Administrator, a position he has held since 1995. Over the years, Dr. Scudder has worked as Medical Director for several area long-term care facilities and has been an active member of state professional organizations including serving as President of the Indiana Association of Public Health Physicians.

At the September meeting of the Dearborn County Hospital Board of Trustees, Dr. Scudder was presented with a plaque recognizing his medical career and commitment to the region.

In addition, the Board made a $2,000 donation to the Scudder Association in honor of Dr. Scudder.

The Scudder Association is an international charitable organization comprised of the descendants of John, Thomas and Elizabeth Scudder of 1600s Kent, England. Goals of the organization include providing financial assistance to specific hospitals and schools in India, as well as supporting religious and educational activities, such as scholarships to qualified students in the fields of medicine, ministry and social work.

Dr. Scudder will also be presented with a custom made captain’s chair at the next meeting of the Dearborn County Hospital Medical Staff.

“These items are just expressions of the deep appreciation the hospital, medical staff and community have for the work Dr. Scudder has done over the past 47 years,” concluded Mr. Howard. “Nothing can fully express our combined gratitude for his lifelong commitment to medicine and to the people of Southeastern Indiana.”

Full House responds to dissident stockholders request for special meeting Company seeking strategic alternatives

The Board of Directors of Full House Resorts, Inc. (NASDAQ:FLL) comments on the public announcement on October 9, 2014 made by dissident minority stockholders regarding their request to call a special meeting to appoint certain individuals to the Company’s board of directors and make changes to the Company’s bylaws.

The Company has been evaluating strategic alternatives for several months. The Company intends to continue exploring strategic alternatives to maximize value for all stockholders, including the potential merger or sale of the Company, and has retained Macquarie Capital as its financial advisor and Latham & Watkins LLP as its legal advisor. The Company will inform its stockholders of the result of its review of strategic alternatives at the appropriate time.

Accordingly, the Company believes that the proposals by the dissident group are inappropriate and disruptive at this time and encourages stockholders to not take any action with respect to the proposals. The Company also notes that many of the statements made by the dissident group are inaccurate or misleading.

The Company also believes that the dissident group are the wrong people, with the wrong agenda at the wrong time.

Craig Thomas and Bradley Tirpak do not have a record of creating value for stockholders as evidenced by their failed attempt to take over the board of USA Technologies, Inc. and the decline in Direct Insite Corp’s stock price and operations during the period of Craig Thomas’ service as a board member following a similar board takeover. In addition, Dan Lee recently had a less than eight month tenure at the Palms Casino Resort, had a disruptive departure from Pinnacle Entertainment and was unsuccessful in his efforts to develop a casino in Louisiana.

The Company will pursue the strategy that is in the best interest of all stockholders, and encourages its stockholders not to support actions that enable the dissident group to take control of the Company without providing a fully formed strategic plan to create value for stockholders of the Company.

The letter of Concerned Stockholders of Full House was signed by Daniel Lee, Bradley Tirpak and Craig Thomas.

Their letter included the following: Stockholders have lost almost 60% of their investment in the past year On September 30, 2013, the Company’s shares closed at $2.78. On September 30, 2014, the Company’s shares closed at $1.15, a decline of 58.6%.

Executive compensation is up close to 60% in the past five years Over the past five fiscal years between 2009 and 2013, Andre Hilliou, the Chairman and CEO of the Company has been paid total compensation of $4,446,279 and Mark Miller, COO of the Company, has been paid total compensation of $4,430,372.

Between 2009 and 2013, the total compensation for the Chairman and CEO increased 59% and the total compensation of the COO increased 78%. We believe that these levels of compensation are irresponsible given the size and performance of the Company and note that almost 37% of the shares voted at last year’s Annual Meeting voted against the proposal to approve executive compensation.

The Company’s operations have performed poorly and it has lost valuable business In the Company’s Northern Nevada segment, which includes the Stockman’s Casino and the Grand Lodge Casino, gross gaming revenues have declined 10.6% YTD through Q2 2014. The significant decline in gross gaming revenues YTD in 2014 follows a smaller full year decline in 2013.

At the Rising Star Casino, gross gaming revenues have declined 27.1% YTD in through August 2014, despite opening a new 104 guest room hotel in November of 2013.

The decline in gross gaming revenues YTD in 2014 follows a full year decline of 21.2% in 2013. The property was acquired in April of 2011 and its gaming revenues in the first half of 2014 were 47% below what they were in the first half of 2011.

At the Silver Slipper Casino, gross gaming revenues have declined 8.5% YTD in 2014 through Q2. During the same time period, the Gulf Coast Mississippi market was up 0.8%.

The Company lost its management contract at the Buffalo Thunder Resort & Casino in September 2014.

The Management and Board approved a proposal to dilute stockholders by 90% On January 8, 2014, the Company filed a Registration Statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission (the “SEC”) in connection with the proposed sale of $46 million worth of Common Stock. On January 8, the price of the Common Stock closed at $2.65 and there were approximately 18.75 million shares outstanding.

If the proposed offering had occurred at that price, the Company would have sold approximately 17.3 million shares of Common Stock and existing stockholders would have been diluted by more than 90%.

We believe that the proposed offering was a poor capital allocation decision.

Furthermore, we believe that any company proposing to nearly double the share count should tell shareholders clearly what the company intends to do with the funds.

Shiner boys team, three girls advance to regional The Oldenburg boys and Batesville girls captured the 2014 South Dearborn Sectional on Saturday, Oct. 11.

Rising Sun’s Ohio River Valley Conference champion boys kept their season alive with a fifth place finish.

Rising Sun was led by Zach Martini in 8th (17:47) followed by, Claudio Gallegos 13th (17:59), Matt Yocum 27th (18:40), Colton Henry 40th (19:17) and Matt Martini 48th (19:45). Top 20 finishers earn all-sectional honors.

The top five teams and top 10 individuals not on an advancing team qualified for the regional this Saturday at South Dearborn. They will be joined by top finisher from the Franklin Community Sectional.

The Rising Sun girls did not have a team score but three of four runners advanced in the top 10 from other teams.

Freshman Kasey Baker was 31st (23:09) with Lucy Carrigan 35th (23:35) and Bailey Baker 37th (24:08). Tigers upend Shiners in sectional final Lawrenceburg Tigers ended the Rising Sun boys soccer season at 133-2 with a 3-0 win in the sectional final Saturday.

The Tigers got on th board in the firt half on a penalty kick as a foul was called near the net. Trevor Lenke scored with 4:02 left in the first half.

Coach Mike Seipel received a yellow card for going onto the field and asking about the call.

Tufts scored the final goal on an assist by Brady Gordon.

Lawrenceburg (13-4-1) advances to the Switzerland County Regional and will face Providence at 7:30 pm on Thursday. That match will be preceded at 5:30 pm when Trinity Lutheran will play Southwestern. Thursday’s winners will play for the re-

gional title on Saturday at 12 pm.

Rising Sun beat Milan 5-0 in its opening game. The first goal was scored by Bryant Housemyer just 35 seconds into the game on a pass from Jake Uhlmansiek. Uhlmansiek scored unassisted at 32:38. Housemyer assisted

with the team’s third goal of the half scored by Tyler Camden at 4:45.

Uhlmansiek scored again at 35:53 on a Shane Chase assist. Angelo Gallegos scored on an assist from with 11:35 left.

Uhlmansiek closed out the season with 21 goals and 12

assists. Tristan Brown had 9 and 3 followed by Housemyer with 8-3, Shane Chase 6-7, Camden 5-1,Gallegos 5-6, Zach Martini 4-3, Bryce Pottrafke 2-2, MattYocum 2-1, Tyler Roberts 2-0, Brady Murray 1-1, Matt Martini 0-3, Steven Fields 1-0, Eldridge 1-0, and Jac Sullivan 0-1.

Rising Sun closed out its 2014 girls soccer season with a 1-0 loss to Switzerland County in the semi-final round of the Class A Sectional at Rising Sun on Thursday, Oct. 9.

Shiner keeper Erin Webb stopped everything she could get her hands on (20 saves)

but a high pass from Pacer Katie Kimmel bounced over her head and into goal with 3:15 left in the half.

It was the only goal of the night.

The Shiner defense held off the Pacer attack but couldn't get the offense going.

It was the final game for seniors Carly Bowman, Caylin Mondary, Cailin Bush and Webb.

No. 1-ranked Lawrenceburg girls, now 16-2-0, defeated No. 11 Oldenburg

Academy 3-0 in last Wednesday’s weather-delayed first round - beat South Ripley 8-1 Thursday and Switzerland County 8-0 to achieve their fourth consecutive crown.

Saturday afternoon’s Sectional 45 final 8-0 win over Switzerland County showcased the Tigers’ superior speed, skill and tourney seasoning yet again. LHS was credited with 48 shots on goal, 30 of which centered on frame, keeping Swiss goalkeeper Eve Galbreath busy to

In the first five minutes of play, junior Rachel Magee (36:33) and sophomore Holly Nutley (35:55), scored off assists by soph Audrey Schwier.

Magee, en route to a threegoal hat trick, scored again at 27:31, off the assist by classmate Peighton Cook. LHS scoring leader Cook followed with a goal, from the 18-yard line, like Magee’s, assisted by senior Ashlee Miller.

Lawrenceburg girls made it 5-0 at halftime on Magee’s third score, with 2:37 left, on Nutley’s assist out from the end line.

Senior Alexis Fussnecker was the beneficiary of Schwier’s third assist of the afternoon just 38:30 into second-half play, redirecting the soft cross, which dropped inside the right post.

Sophomore Josie Denton blasted the Tigers to a 7-0 lead with 31:38 remaining, scoring off the assist by Fussnecker.

Lawrenceburg subbed liberally thereafter, with senior Allison Haire scoring the eighth goal, unassisted with 7:32 left.

Lady Tigers will travel to Santa Claus, Ind., to take on No. 3-ranked Heritage Hills (17-0-1) in this coming Saturday’s single-game regional championship, set for a 4 p.m. kickoff, local time.

Earlier, LHS girls cleared the first hurdle in state tournament play with a 3-0 shutout win over No. 11 Oldenburg.

Cook scored two goals and Tigers got a goal and assist from Denton and a two-save shutout by goalkeeper Lauren Kittle.

Cook took the long cross from Denton from outside the 18-yard line on the left side and knocked down the game’s first goal, to the far post, at the 19:41 mark in the first half.

The 1-0 lead stood through intermission, with the Tigers posting the early 7-5 advantage in shots, including 4-1 on frame. Lawrenceburg outshot the Twisters 18-8 for the

match.

Cook headed home a rebound off the deflected corner kick by Magee at 22:39 in the second half to give the Lady Tigers some breathing room, 2-0.

Senior Victoria Stuard, awarded the free kick in the late going, booted perfectly to allow Denton’s one-timer from the top of the 18 for the 3-0 victory with 7:48 left to play.

Volliers lose to Tigers; Hope is sectional site

Rising Sun (12-8) closed out its home volleyball season on Tuesday, Oct. 7 with a 25-17, 25-14 and 25-14 loss the Lawrenceburg Lady Tigers.

It was senior and parent night for the Shiners who said farewell to four senior starters.

Alix DeDreu led the team with seven kills, a block, 17 digs, plus 15-for-18 in serve reception and 6-for-8 serving with an ace.

Bailee Bostic had three kills along with 15 digs while 20-for-21 in serve reception and 5-for-5 with an ace.

Defensive specialist Bailey Baker was 12-for-13 serving

with two aces while 16-for-17 in receptions and 10 digs.

Katie Jackson had a kill and two digs.

Setter Haley Presley had 16 assists with six digs and 6-for-7 serving.

Kelsey Romans added four ills with 13 digs, 6-for-6 in receptions and 5-for-6 with one service ace.

Tiffany Vinup added four kills and 2-for-2 serving.

Lawrenceburg won the reserve match 25-13, 25-22.

Rising Sun was to play at South Ripley Tuesday and at Jac-Cen-Del tonight. They will play JCD in sectional play Thursday at 6 p.m. at Hauser High School in Hope.

Venison is a versatile, mildly flavored meat you can be proud to serve in any setting. For the convenience of our hunters and their families, Glier’s has collected a few of its favorite deer recipes.

Venison Swiss Steak 1 lg. round steak 2 onions 2 green peppers 1 8 oz. can tomato sauce 1 c. water 1 dash Worcestershire sauce salt and pepper to taste

Dice the onion and green peppers and sauté in greased pan, then spoon out in a bowl and set aside.

Cut the round steak into 4 pieces (it will naturally separate along its center line) and pound flour into both sides. Pound firmly to better adhere the flour and tenderize the meat.

Brown meat on both sides.

Liberally spoon chopped onion and green pepper mixture on top on each piece of meat.

Cover evenly to ensure uniform flavor.

In a medium bowl, add water and Worcestershire sauce to the tomato sauce, stir and pour over meat.

If cooking on a range, simmer on low heat for a two hours or until meat is tender enough to cut with fork. If done in an electric frying pan, cook at 250-300 degrees.

Check frequently, sauce mixture will thicken shortly. Keep sauce to a gravy consistency; sprinkle water if necessary to keep from over thickening, but do not make watery.

Ashcraft Auto Body - Training is key in firearms safety craftsmanship & honesty Rob Ashcraft, 48, has been repairing vehicle bodies since he was 18, but he got his start professionally after a deer smashed into his brand new truck about 15 years ago. He decided to repair the vehicle himself, and since then his reputation as a collision repair expert has soared.

Today, Ashcraft Auto Body, 710 Green Boulevard (U.S.50), Aurora, is known throughout the region and Tri-State as the place to go for the smallest fender-bender or salvaging a vehicle the insurance company wants brought back from the dead.

Ashcraft took two years of auto body repair at IvyTech, Madison, after high school to enhance his skills. His dream was to own his own shop, but it took a crazy deer during the frisky season to convince himself he was ready.

“It was a Dodge Dakota, 1998-99, and I decided I wanted to repair it myself. I was in the iron workers at the time. I had wanted to open my own shop for quite awhile. I figured my own vehicle was a good a place as any to start,” said Ashcraft. “It turned out great.”

Word got around, and before he knew it Ashcraft was repairing vehicles from a friend’s garage in Dillsboro.

“No heat, no running water. All we had there was electricity. I started out of a five-gallon bucket of tools, and that was it.”

Word got around a little more, and Ashcraft upgraded to the trailer park behind the former Ande Chevrolet in Greendale. After two years, he moved to downtown Aurora.

“I managed to put enough money back to buy this property and build here,” he said.

Communicating with his customers tops the list, said Ashcraft, who stressed he keeps them aware of all information he receives from insurance companies, any changes that must be made, and virtually anything that affects their time and money.

He does expert work, gets the vehicle out quickly, and never inflates prices.

“Fairness and honesty, I think, are one of my biggest assets here. I like to make sure people are treated fair. … I think that reputation carries over into the community.”

Ashcraft uses OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts whenever possible even though “throwing on an after-market piece would be so easy.”

If OEM is not available, he always uses “CAPA-certified, the top grade based on the insurance industry.

“We never use the cheap parts, never,” he said.

He writes a visible estimate and always specifies OEM parts taking a shot the insurance company will approve. All time estimates are based on computerized equations, and written on the back of estimates.

“It breaks down, basically, to four hours of repair will equal one day in the garage,” said Ashcraft, explaining time must be allowed for fillers, paint and other materials to dry. “It is a pretty accurate formula.”

Most adjusters are satisfied with Ashcraft’s word because of his experience and honesty, he added.

“I couldn’t even estimate that,” said Ashcraft, when asked how many deer collision repairs he makes in the fall, but added the population is so thick these days that repairing deer-damaged vehicles is steady throughout the year.

He warns people to drive cautiously, but adds: “If you live in this area, you are going to hit a deer.

I don’t care who you are.”

Anglers: don’t discount the Ohio River The Ohio River, formed by the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers at Pittsburg, flows generally south and west 981 miles to the Mississippi River while forming the border between five states after leaving Pennsylvania.

Portions of 11 states drain into the Ohio River representing 20 percent of the Mississippi River watershed.

United States Supreme Court settlements changed jurisdiction of the Ohio River from exclusive jurisdiction of Kentucky to concurrent jurisdiction with Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois in 1985.

Largemouth

During the early spring when water temperatures exceed 50 degrees, largemouth bass begin moving into creeks and embayments to spawn.

After spawning some bass stay in this shallow habitat while others move into the main river. The deeper backwaters are likely to hold more bass than the shallow ones once the water warms above 80 degrees.

The best time to catch largemouth bass in the main river is June through the fall.

When fishing the embakments in the spring, try shallow running crank baits, plastic worms, and spinner baits fished slowly.

As the water warms, try fishing the creek mouths with jig and pigs, deep running crank baits, and jigging spoons. When fishing the main channel target the weed beds, rocky banks, and woody debris.

Keep in mind that most largemouth bass are taken in less than six feet of water.

Smallmouth

Smallmouth bass are found throughout the Ohio River. They are commonly caught in all of the tail waters and from most rocky areas in any of the pools.

Because crayfish are such an important food for smallmouth bass, they are seldom far from rock substrates that are also the primary habitat of these crustaceans.

Smallmouth bass can be readily taken from spring through fall, but most lunkers are caught from mid-April through early May. Before spawning begins, try fishing deeprunning crank baits or 1/8- to 3/8-ounce jigs tipped with black or brown jig bodies near drop-offs in 3 to 10 feet of water. If the fishing is slow, try tipping these jigs with a minnow.

If the water is high and turbid, try fishing light-colored spinner baits behind current breaks such as barge mooring cells, boulders

or other obstructions.

As the water warms up, light-colored buzz baits or noisy surface plugs work well against rocky shorelines. Smallmouth bass are consistently by drifting a minnow four to five feet under a small bobber in the tail waters, near creek mouths or around islands.

Sauger

Sauger provide some of the highest catch rates of any fish in the river and walleye can be caught by fishing the same methods. Walleye and sauger (Percids) concentrate in tailwater areas in the early spring then disperse during the summer months. In the fall when water temperatures drop into the 50’s, they begin congregating at stream confluences and move to tailwater areas in fair numbers for most of the fall and winter.

The most productive times to fish for these fish in the Ohio River are during late fall, winter, and early spring using a variety of simple techniques.

The most popular method of taking walleye and sauger is by fishing 1/8- to 3/8-ounce jigs tipped with white or chartreuse twister tails near the bottom.

Adding a minnow to this rig, or to a plain jig, is a real advantage when fishing is slow.

Jigging spoons and vibrating blade lures are also effective at getting down to the fish which typically hug the bottom.

Sauger move into shallow water at sunset and can be taken with small crank baits throughout the night until the sun rises the next morning. Fishing can be excellent during the day if there is heavy cloud cover.

Temperate basses

The temperate basses are the most abundant sport fish species group in the Ohio River. The white bass is the most frequently caught native game fish in the river, averaging 8 to 12 inches long but never exceeds 21 inches.

White bass have stripes above the lateral line that are usually un-broken and only a single stripe will reach the base of the tail.

White bass have only a single tooth patch on the tongue. Hybrid striped bass have been stocked in the river by Ohio. Fish up to 10 pounds are fairly common. They often exceed 18 inches in length and can reach well over 21 inches. Hybrid striped bass have stripes above the lateral line that are often broken and multiple stripes reach the base of the tail.

The tooth patch on the tongue of a hybrid striped bass is split down the center forming two patches. Striped bass are stocked in the river by Kentucky and can weigh up to 20 pounds. Light tackle is acceptable for catching white bass, but the larger stripers and hybrids require much heavier gear.

Leo Gabbard has been running at least a variation of the same company since the late 1970s. Now with his son, Scott, at the helm beside him, the two offer much more than just feed and grain at their company, Gabbard Trailer Rental and Feed.

While Leo focuses on the trucking and excavating these days, Scott deals with the retail end. The building, off Carolina Trace Road, in West Harrison, is a “general store.”

The Gabbards offer a variety of feeds and even make custom formulas. Among the merchandise is dog food, cat food, horse feed, cattle feed, pig feed, show pig feed, even llama feed.

With a mixer on-site, customers can describe the nutrients they want for their animal and the Gabbards can create custom blends. Blends come from about 20 ingredients, said Scott Gabbard.

“I buy a lot of my corn off of local suppliers, my customers. They support me, I support them,” he said.

The Gabbards even have a recipe book to ensure they get the mixes just right.

In the spring, Gabbard Feed sells mulch, fertilizer, and seed. In high demand as winter approaches, fuel pellets are for sale.

“I started fuel pellets about three years ago, which is really climbing up in the winter. I tripled, almost quadrupled, my pellet business in three years,” said Scott.

The alternative to burning wood, he said, is very popular for those who don’t want the hassle of firewood.

The method also burns significantly less fuel.

“The newest thing coming around is the non-GMO animal feed, the organic animal feed,” said Scott. He has started a small supply of GMOfree feed, but said most is ordered

because it’s too expensive to stock.

“Out here, it’s all about the price,” he said, pointing out many customers watch their wallets and pocketbooks.

“We’re doing so many different things to serve the community. We do sales, we help the farmers, we haul grain, we haul equipment, we build ponds, we build driveways, we do clearing. … We’ve got a lot going on for the little guys,” said Scott.

Catfish

to fish tailwater areas for these fish with good angling continuing through the summer and into the fall.

The temperate basses are attracted to highly oxygenated water below dams and typically seek quiet water adjacent to fast moving water where they wait to ambush gizzard shad and emerald shiners.

Savvy anglers catch their own shad with cast nets and use them fished from jigs large enough to get the bait down in the current, usually one to two ounces. White bass, being smaller, can be taken on much lighter jigs tipped with minnows, small spinners, crank baits and spoons. These fish often feed on the surface and can be taken on top-water baits.

A common method of surface fishing calls for a jig to be trailed behind a floating, hookless agitator which pops across the surface and attracts strikes.

Many anglers keep two rods handy, one rigged with a surface lure and the other with a jig.

Quite a few hybrid striped bass are also taken by anglers that are bottom fishing with live bait, cut bait, or liver.

The most common catfish species in the Ohio River sport fishery are channel cats, flatheads, and blue catfish. These species are widely distributed and can be readily taken by shore anglers.

Flatheads are capable of reaching 100 pounds, but 20- to 30-pound fish are the norm.

Catfish can be caught almost any time water temperatures are above 50 degrees, but night fishing during May, June, and July is best.

Tail waters produce the most fish, but warm water discharges, stream confluences, and gravel flats near deep water are also proven producers of big cats. Try drifting large gizzard shad (four to six inches) on a two-ounce jig in swift water for large channels and flatheads.

If larger shad are available, try cutting these into two-inch pieces (cut bait) and bottom fishing with heavy tackle. It is not uncommon for channel catfish to be taken incidentally on crank baits by anglers targeting other species.

More Recipes from Glier’s Barbecue-Braised Venison Roast

5 -6 lbs. venison roast 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. pepper 1/2 tsp. powder garlic 4 tbsp. vegetable oil 2 lb. sliced onions (1/8 inch) 1 c. water 3 cubes beef bouillon Pat meat dry; sprinkle to taste with salt, pepper and garlic powder.

Place roast(s) on grill at high heat. Grill until well browned on all sides, brush on oil to aid browning. Remove roasts.

Heat oil in large heavy pot under medium heat. Stir in sliced onions, cook for several minutes until lightly browned and beginning to soften.

Place roast(s) in pot; spoon some onions over top. Add water and bouillon cubes. Cover and bring to boil.

Place in preheated 300 degree oven. Cook 3 1/2 hours or until meat is tender and well done. Ladle au jus into cup or gravy bowl.

Cut meat in thin slices; pour au jus over slices immediately before serving to improve moisture & flavor. Serve topped with onions.

1/2 roll venison breakfast sausage (hot or mild, to taste) 2 (16 ounce) cans baked beans with pork 1 (14.5 ounce) can wax beans, drained 1 (15.5 ounce) can butter beans, drained 1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, drained 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce 1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed tomato soup 1 tablespoon mustard powder 3/4 cup packed brown sugar 1 tablespoon chili powder (less or more according to taste) 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 2 medium onions, chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed In a large pot or dutch oven, mix baked beans, wax beans, butter beans, and kidney beans. Mix in dry mustard, brown sugar, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, tomato sauce, and tomato soup.

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Grease skillet with cooking oil, or bacon grease for additional flavor.

Cook breakfast sausage until brown, break apart into crumbles with fork. Mix onion and garlic with venison and sauté for 5 minutes or until tender.

Stir venison mixture into the pot with bean mixture.

Bake in 300 degree preheated oven, covered, for 3 to 5 hours, removing the lid for the final 45 minutes.
