The Ohio County Primary election on Tuesday, May 6 had a low turnout with 1217 ballots cast (or approximately 27 percent). The big local race was for sheriff on the Republican ticket where former state trooper and current 9-1-1 coordinator Glen Potts edged current Deputy Sheriff John Roberts 398 to 381 or 41.29 to 39.52 percent. City Police Sergeant Frank McIntosh was third with 185 votes or 19.19 percent. Potts will not meet former Republican Sheriff Swede Colen in the November election as Colen ran unopposed on the Democratic ticket. The only other Republican race was to see who would replace Johnny Nugent as State Senator 43 district. Perfect North Slopes owner Chip Perfect carried Ohio County with 76.48 percent of the vote or 670 votes. Bill McDonald was second with 156 votes or 17.8 percent and Mark Schneider had 50 votes or 5.71 votes. Perfect had more than 60 percent of the vote area wide at press time. Ohio County attorney Lane Siekman won Ohio County with 77.25 percent of the vote or 180 ballots. Susan Hall Heitzman had 32 votes or 13.73 percent. Corine Nicole Westerfeld had 21 votes or 9 percent. Siekman also won Dearborn County with 385 votes to 162 by Heitzman and 113 by Westerfeld. However when the totals came in for Decatur, Union, Rush and Switzerland County the totals were in favor of Heitzman.
