Giant birthday cake for city’s bicentennial celebration The City of Rising Sun will turn 200 years old on May 30, 2014 and what better way to celebrate a big birthday than with a big birthday cake? The City of Rising Sun and the Ohio County Historical Society are having a 200th Birthday Party at the Rising Sun History Museum on Friday, May 30 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Museum is located at 212 South Walnut Street. “We talked about different ways to celebrate the event” said Museum Director Cliff Thies “and we decided that it would be fun to have a traditional Birthday Party with cake and ice cream. This is intended to be a entertaining event for the entire community and our visitors” The cake will be a story in itself displaying the talents of many community volunteers in it’s patchwork layers of 54 individual 13 X 9 sheet cakes. Each baker will be given a cake mix and baking instructions and left to their own imaginations. The cakes will be baked at home and then frozen before the final assembly at the museum on a commercial grade sheet of plywood where they will be covered in icing for the event. Everyone is invited to attend the cake assembly during the day and the great unveiling on Friday evening at

6 p.m. The cake will then be served free along with ice cream to all in attendance. Party-goers will receive a piece of whatever flavor comes off the serving line at that point. It is anticipated that the giant cake will serve over 650 people. In addition to the free cake and ice cream, the Rising Sun Rotary Club will be serving a smoked pork chop dinner for $8. Dinner tickets are available in advance from any Rotary member and at the Ohio County Visitors’ Center on the corner of Main and Walnut Streets. There will also be live music, special exhibits, presentations, guest speakers, and fun for all. “We are inviting guests to come to the party in period costumes.” said Thies. “It doesn't matter what year that you dress up from since the City is 200 years old. You can dress up from whatever era you like for the party. We just want to remind everyone to take lots of pictures and preserve this memory as it only happens once every hundred years.” Call the Visitors’ Center at 812-4384933 or the Museum at 812-438-4915 to see how you can get involved in the festivities.

THREE BOUND FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS

The nerves have not quite settled in yet. They know it might be coming, but their friends, family and coaches are with them every step of the way. There is too much training to accomplish, too much excitement about displaying their athletic abilities on the national stage to let fear take over. Jacob Eldridge - Manchester. Christa Mullins - Bright. Becky Cashman - Rising Sun. Remember those names. In June, they will compete with some of the best athletes in the nation. They will be three of the 47 athletes from Team Indiana participating in the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games in Princeton, N.J., June 14-21. Eldridge was with a friend when he received the news his running skills helped land him a spot on the team. “We were both jumping up and down,” said Jacob Eldridge. Swimmer Becky Cashman’s mom, Ann, was at work when she received the call. “I yelled through the whole building “She made it!’” smiled Ann Cashman. But Becky will not be the only Ripley Ohio Dearborn Special Olympics Indiana delegation member to hit the water. The pool is where Christa Mullins also will compete.

New and NEW MAYOR TAKES OVER IN LAWRENCEBURG old crosses available

Any Ohio County family who would like a cross displayed in honor of their deceased veteran on the courthouse lawn during Memorial Day services should contact the American Legion Post #59 and leave a message for Danny Grant, legion veterans officer. New molded crosses have been made to replace the wooden ones. The old crosses will be available through Memorial Day. After that, the old crosses will be destroyed because of lack of storage area.
