Saturday, Aug. 16 was proclaimed as “Whitlock Day in Rising Sun”. Members of the family who attended and shared many memories and pictures included, John Whitlock, Mary Alice Radcliff, Deanna Swanson, Dana Wolfe Hildebrand, and Linda Visesi. Each family member received a key to the city and copies of the proclamation. Several community persons visited with the family members during an informal reception at the Ohio County Historical Museum.

In 1924 Mr. Whitlock and his Hoosier Boy made a record that still stands today. On a swollen Ohio River, full of debris, Whitlock broke the mile-a-minute speed barrier on a round-trip endurance race between Cincinnati to Louisville, a distance of 267 miles. He made the trip in 267 minutes and 49 seconds, driving without relief. Holt, III (better known as Trey) is a 16-year-old from Madison who piloted an F-5 liter boat built in 1940 in the Vintage category. This was his third race appearance. He commented that he hoped the rain would hold off, as getting hit with rain stings when you are going 95 miles per hour. Joe Johnson of Madison, Ohio Valley Vintage Hydroplane Association president and race director, founded the OVVHA in 1997 and serves over six states. Mr. Johnson stated, “Rising Sun is a very cool,

laid back place to run your boats. We are glad to help celebrate their 200th birthday.” Two of his fellow members of the OVVHA have a program to teach children in need how to build model hydroplanes. H.A. (Doc) Hasan, PhD. of Spalding University is the creator of the program Project Hydroplane Racing Strategy and H. A. Learning Strategy.
