Team 38 winning 3rd place of $2410 for catching 118.2 pounds of catfish and also winning the best team with a female for a prize of $1000. This was the 2nd time the team won such an award which was back in 2012, the same awards. The Ohio Valley River Cats Catfish Tournament was held in Rising Sun Saturday, Sept. 6 and Sunday, Sept. 7. There were 146 boats entered with 325 people participating. This was the largest Catfish Tournament in the US, only 2nd to it’s own tournament in 2012 when they had 154 boats participating. This was the ninth year to have this tournament here with prize money
given out of $34,095. Over the past eight years prize money given out to the boater was a total of $164,000. There was a prize for 1st place of $10,000. Money was given out to the top 25 places. The top team with a female fishing won $1000. The team catching the biggest catfish gets a prize of $5250. There was an opening ceremony with the color guard from the American Legion Post #59 at 7 a.m. on Saturday, with plagues given in
honor of two charter members of the River Cats organization, Charlie Kelley and Jeff Cosby. The boats took off at 8 a.m. and had to be back for weigh in at 4 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday the boats took off at 7 a.m. and had to be back at 3 p.m. Teams were allowed only three to a boat with only three poles per person. The fish were measured by the DNR department of Kentucky. Hoffman, the fish handler was Steven Hannah, and the person putting the fish down the trough to go back into the river was Danny Vinup. There were free hot dogs, hamburgers, and water given out on Saturday that were paid for by the city of Rising Sun. They were cooked by Gerald Brown Jr., Zack Brown and Ed Hautman. On Sunday there were hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks for sale by the Cub Scout Pack 650 of Rising Sun.

The “Shiner Pride” Band winners again The “Shiner Pride” Band started their competition season this past Saturday, Sept. 6, at Columbus North High School. The theme for this year’s show is “The Shiner Café” featuring the music of Blood, Sweat, and Tears, and Benny Goodman. The band competes in the Mid-States Circuit in Class A. They came in first place in their class on Saturday, capturing awards for Best Music, Best General Effect, and Best Ben Eads and Sam Bortka. Sam attended both Paoli Flag Corps. tleman approached Mr. Eads and told him what a great job the band had done. The gentleman also commented on how close the music was to the arrangements that the band Blood, Sweat, and Tears actually plays. Those are great compliments on their own merit. However, the visitor then introduced himself. “My name is Sam Bortka, and I played with Blood, Sweat, and Tears for five years.” WOW! A former member of B, S, and T actually heard the Shiner Band play their music…and liked it!
