From being named to The Princeton Review’s list of Best Northeastern Colleges for 2023, to our Young School of Nursing being named a Top 10 nursing school in Massachusetts, to ranking as a Top 50 Women-Led Business in Massachusetts by The Women’s Edge and The Boston Globe, Regis has had much to celebrate throughout 2022 and in 2023.

Inside you will read inspiring stories of Regis students from all different backgrounds pursuing degrees in myriad fields. What they all have in common is the incredible impact of their scholarships. Together, we are opening doors and providing endless opportunities for the next generation to follow their passions and make a difference in the world. And these are just a handful of the students who benefit from your philanthropy. 100% of our undergraduates receive finanicial aid or scholarship support, and nearly 50% of undergraduates in the class of 2026 are the first in their family to attend college.

More than fifty years have passed since Catherine D’Arcy Trefethen ’69 graduated from Regis, but she is thrilled to say that her friendships with classmates are still growing.

“My experience at Regis and the lifelong friends I gained is what inspires me to give back to Regis,” Trefethen says. “Regis to me means love, loyalty, and friendship.”

Along with the many friendships motivating her generosity, Trefethen also notes the many ways in which Regis stands out from other schools.

“These achievements sent me over the moon,” Trefethen says. “I couldn’t be prouder.”

Trefethen credits her time at Regis for helping her evolve into the person she is today, instilling values such as faith, trust, and honesty that she has carried with her throughout her life.

“I'm grateful for learning to have an open mind and accept new ideas,” Trefethen says of some of the life lessons she learned at Regis. “That's what life is all about: exploring new ideas, new thoughts, and drawing logical conclusions.”

Trefethen finds herself passing the Bethany Home for the Sisters of Saint Joseph during her weekly commute and takes this special time for an important reflection.

“Each time I pass the home I bless myself, wish the good Sisters well, and thank them for the wonderful education and lifelong friends they've given me,” shares Trefethen.

Her advice to current students? “Trust your heart and your instincts. With the knowledge you will gain at Regis, these components should serve you well!”

Jacob Desjardins

Class of 2023 Regis Diverse Educators Scholarship

Education major Jacob Desjardins ’23 remembers the moment he knew he wanted to become a teacher. He was volunteering with his church at a summer camp when he met Anabelle, a camper who had a rare heart disease that required her to get a pulmonary catheter.

“I was always inspired by her positive attitude and determination,” says Desjardins. “Everything was a little harder for her but she didn’t allow that to get in the way of enjoying her camp experience.”

Desjardins remembers when Anabelle made her first shot in cornhole after practicing diligently with her all week. “Her pure joy gave me an overwhelming feeling that I made a difference in this child's life,” says Desjardins. “Inspiring kids like her has shown me that I am meant to be a teacher. If she can push through all of these medical conditions with a smile on her face, she deserves a teacher who will put love and care into their work.”

Thanks to the Regis Diverse Educators Scholarship—a full-tuition, four-year scholarship for students committed to serving underrepresented populations in education— Desjardins has the chance to fulfill his dream. “Without this scholarship, I would not be here,” he says. “My family and I are forever grateful for this funding.”

Desjardins is passionate about finding ways to support each of his students so they can succeed academically. “You may never know what someone is going through in their home life,” says Desjardins. “As an educator, I want my students to feel safe and happy at school no matter what they may be dealing with outside of school.”

Desjardins is also grateful for the Regis community and his professors for providing an inclusive environment where each student is more than just a number. “Regis has helped me grow into a strong individual who is not afraid to ask for help,” says Desjardins. “Everyone at Regis wants to be a source of success for you, and I want to be that person for my students in the future.”

Enriching. Welcoming. Home. These are the words scholarship recipient Santiago Pedraza Novak '23 uses to describe Regis. As an international student from Bogotá, Colombia, a sense of community and belonging have always been important to him.

"In my culture, it is very common to get together and celebrate the little things in life," Novak says. "That happiness, folklore, and joy is something I was fortunate enough to have found at Regis."

He reminds himself that every day is a chance for him to help people and get involved in the community. "I want to make an impact—at Regis and beyond,” he says.

In addition to his leadership roles—captain of the men's soccer team, senior resident assistant, tour guide, orientation leader coordinator, and SAAC president—Novak is making an impact in the classroom.

“My scholarship motivates me to make the most of this opportunity and achieve my academic goals to make my donor proud,” says Novak.

As a biology major on a pre-medical track with a minor in lab operations management, Novak was one of six students chosen to participate in an innovative research study on the detection of ovarian cancer with Associate Professor of STEM Shannon Hogan, PhD.

“Being able to say I have firsthand experience in a lab doing such important research is huge,” says Novak. “This type of work is so rare for undergraduate students, and I know it will give me an advantage when I start applying for graduate school and jobs.”

Novak looks forward to crossing the stage at Commencement 2023 and hopes to obtain a research position at a biotech company and eventually pursue his master's degree in biotechnology.

“I never thought I would be doing the work I am doing right now—and as a teaching assistant, I can share my research and findings with other students as well. There are so many opportunities here to help me grow personally and academically, and I am forever grateful that my scholarship opened the doors to Regis.”

Let It Shine

Let It Shine Regis Gala raises more than $600,000 for student scholarships

Regis College held its seventh Let It Shine Gala on October 27, 2022, at the Four Seasons Hotel in Boston, raising more than $600,000 for scholarships that will help provide greater access to higher education for students in need. Since it was launched in 2016, Regis’ gala has raised more than $5.1 million for student scholarships.

The 2022 Shining Example Award was presented to toxicologist and childhood cancer research advocate Courtney Horvath ’06, PhD, DABT—who is currently the Head of Strategy, Planning and Operations for Translational Medicine at Novartis. Throughout her career, she has been involved in the development of biopharmaceuticals across various therapeutic areas and modalities. As the parent of a pediatric cancer survivor, Horvath was inspired to become a passionate advocate for childhood cancer research and is now a national speaker on this topic.

“My time at Regis was so formative in who I have become as a scientist, leader, and advocate,” said Horvath. “The faculty at Regis saw potential in me that I never saw in myself and gave me the foundation and confidence to pursue my PhD and, ultimately, a successful career in research.”

Lydia Miller

Class of 2023

Lydia Miller ’23 has an impressive resume: Pride Guide, Orientation Leader, Peer Tutor, Regis College Honors Program, Bethany Hill Service Group, member of the Regis Dance Company and cross-country team—all while achieving a 4.0 GPA as an undergraduate in the Young School of Nursing.

Although she was initially drawn to Regis for its distinguished, award-winning nursing program, Miller quickly learned the university had much more to offer.

“During my first week at Regis, a member of the Center for Ministry and Service stated that college is a time for growth and development as a whole person, in addition to our academic journey,” says Miller, who took this to heart. “Throughout my first year, I developed into a stronger leader while continuing to discover who I am as an individual.”

Miller put those leadership skills to good use outside of the classroom, volunteering at Bethany Hill Place—an organization that provides safe and affordable housing to families in need— as a reading and homework tutor for children. “This experience is meaningful to me because I am becoming an active member of the children’s lives,” says Miller. “It is so important to be able to build meaningful relationships and offer some stability to them.”

Miller was honored to receive the Sister Thérèse Higgins Sisters of St. Joseph Merit Scholarship that allowed her to pursue her passion of becoming a nurse. “My scholarship motivated me to succeed and become a nurse that positively impacts others, just as my life has been positively impacted by Regis."

After graduating in May 2023, Miller hopes to further her education and become a nurse practitioner with a doctorate degree.

“Attending Regis has helped me grow holistically, and my experiences here have molded me into the young lady I am today," Miller shares. “Thank you to my donors for giving me an opportunity that I will carry with me every day in my career and adult life."

Sister Thérèse Higgins Sisters of St. Joseph Merit Scholarship

As Rosa De Martinis ’22, MEd ’25 walked across the stage at Commencement 2022, she recalls thinking of her family and the sacrifices they made to get her to that day. In the 1970s, De Martinis’ family immigrated to the United States in hopes of giving themselves and future generations a better and more prosperous life.

“I am an example of their sacrifice and hard work,” says De Martinis. “And donor support has contributed to my success and my family’s legacy.”

Thanks to the Hamilton Family Scholarship, De Martinis had the opportunity to follow her dreams of becoming a teacher and graduated in May 2022 with a double major in secondary education and history.

“My scholarship motivated me to make my donor proud and not take this life-changing opportunity for granted," says De Martinis.

As an undergraduate, De Martinis made the honor roll each semester, was a member and editor of Regis’ literary magazine Hemetera, and worked at the library.

From her classmates and professors, De Martinis learned how to be committed, openminded, and accepting—all qualities that are imperative for a secondary education teacher.

“I am certain I will hold onto these attributes and qualities and apply them in all aspects of my life,” says De Martinis. “I believe we are all God’s children, and I want to make sure my students feel heard, validated, and taught in a way that meets their needs.”

De Martinis often thinks of a quote by Michelangelo that he said when he was 87 years old: “I am still learning.” She takes this thought to heart. De Martinis is currently enrolled in the Master of Education in Teaching Special Education (MEd) program at Regis and hopes to one day also receive her doctorate from Regis.

“My drive for learning will never be limited,” says De Martinis. “And the same is true for my gratitude—Regis donors have made a massive contribution to my life and education.”

A Lasting Impact: Donor Scholarships at Regis

Scholarships give talented students with financial need the opportunity to succeed in pursuing their dreams of a Regis degree. Donors may choose to create an endowed scholarship or a restricted, current-use scholarship.

How It Works

• A donor-named, endowed scholarship can be established with a minimum commitment of $100,000 (to be pledged and paid over a period of one to four years) and the principal is retained in perpetuity.

• A restricted, current-use scholarship can be established with a minimum gift of $25,000 (to be pledged and paid over a period of one to four years) and funds can be awarded immediately.

• Donors may establish the scholarship in their own name or in the name of a family member, classmate, or friend.

• Donors work with Regis to determine possible criteria for the scholarship, e.g., for students in a specific program of study.

• Scholarship donors receive an annual report, and pending privacy approval from the student, information about the student recipient(s).
