Duyfken set to sail into Weipa The Duyfken replica arrives in Weipa on Friday, June 29 and will be open to the public from Sunday, July 1 to Friday, July 6.

AFTER completing her refit in Brisbane the Duyfken (Little Dove) is currently sailing her long voyage home through Torres Strait, across to Darwin and then down the WA coast to Fremantle and will be visiting Weipa on her homeward journey.

The Duyfken Replica was constructed in Fremantle and launched in 1999, and is regarded as the most precise replica of a 16th century “Age of Discovery” sailing ship ever made.

The 110-tonne ship was constructed of European Oak, measures 24 metres long and accommodates a maximum crew of 18.

The original Duyfken (Little Dove) was a Dutch sailing ship acknowledged as the first European ship to visit Australia and chart the waters in and around the shores of Queensland, Cape York Peninsula in the early 17th century.

Since her completion in 2000, Duyfken has acted in an unofficial Ambassadorial role for Australia in South East Asia, the Indian Sub-

continent, Africa and Europe.

In 2006, Duyfken sailed around Australia on an exhibition tour as part of the Federal Government’s Australia on the Map events, which coincided with the 400th anniversary of Duyfken’s first voyage to Australia.

That original voyage resulted in Australia’s land mass being cartographically represented on the world map.

The 1606 voyage also marked the first time in recorded European history that Aboriginal people met people from the “outside” world.

Duyfken is operated by the Australian charitable foundation (the Duyfken 1606 Replica Foundation Inc.) and has been funded through thousands of large and small personal donations, corporate sponsorship and grants from the Governments of Australia, The Netherlands, Queensland and Western Australia.

Duyfken is held in trust by the Duyfken Foundation for the people of Australia.

A little bit of history to sail into Weipa UU from page 1

Duyfken Foundation Chairman Graeme Cocks said the ship will visit Weipa, Darwin, Port Hedland and Geraldton to return home as part of a 10 year funding agreement with the WA Government.

Duyfken first European vessel to discover Australia ON November 18, 1605, the Duyfken sailed from Bantam to the coast of western New Guinea under the guidance of Dutch navigator Willem Janszoon.

Janszoon then crossed the eastern end of the Arafura Sea, without seeing the Torres Strait, into the Gulf of Carpentaria.

On February 26, 1606, he made landfall at the Pennefather River on the western shore of Cape York, and then sailing down to Duyfken Point (just north of Weipa). This is the first recorded European landfall on the Australian continent.

Janszoon proceeded to chart some 320 km of the coastline, which he thought was a southerly extension of New Guinea.

Finding the land swampy and the people inhospitable at Cape Keerweer (“Turnabout”), south of Albatross Bay, Willem Janszoon decided to return, and arrived at Bantam in June 1606.

He called the land he had discovered “Nieu Zeland” after

the Dutch province of Zeeland, but the name was not adopted and was later used by Abel Tasman for New Zealand.

In 1611 Janszoon returned to the Netherlands, believing that the south coast of New Guinea

was joined to the land along which he sailed, and Dutch maps reproduced this error for many years.

The original journal and log made during Janszoon’s 1606 voyage have been lost, however the Duyfken chart, (pictured above)

which shows the location of the first landfall in Australia by the Duyfken, had a better fate.

It was still in existence in Amsterdam when Hessel Gerritsz made his Map of the Pacific in 1622, and placed the Duyfken geography upon it, thus providing us with the first map to contain any part of Australia.

The chart was still in existence about 1670, when a copy was made, which eventually went to the Imperial Library in Vienna and remained forgotten there for 200 years.

The map is part of the Atlas Blaeu Van der Hem, brought to Vienna in 1730 by Prince Eugene of Savoy.

Though there have been suggestions that earlier navigators from China, France, or Portugal may have discovered parts of Australia, the Duyfken is the first European vessel definitely known to have done so.

Daniel, Rob, Mick and Jerome were part of the crew to complete the construction of the four two-bedroom Napranum units in just 12 weeks.

FOUR two-bedroom duplex units have been completed in Napranum for the Department of Communities in just 12 weeks.

Cairns company, Richardson’s Building Services were the contractors behind the speedy build, engaging Mick Donaldson and his crew to complete construction of the

units in a 12-week timeframe.

“When we were approached to do the job we had to weighup if it was actually possible.

It was a really tight timeframe, but we’ve made it, pretty much to the day,” Mick said last week as his crew put the finishing touches on the units.

“Richardson’s are a fantastic company who do a lot of remote

work and they are really good at what they do.”

“We look after the construction end, but without Richardson’s running the logistics the job wouldn’t have been possible,” Mick said.

“They co-ordinate everything, including the freight, and they are a big part of what we do.”

Mick’s team of six men,

were joined by five blocklayers, two painters, three electricians and two plumbers to complete the construction and the job also provided employment for some of the local lads.

The two-bedroom low-set units are equipped with solar hot water systems, satellite dishes and state-of-the-art rainwater tanks.

I HAVE a health and safety issue with the non-kerbing of my court and the absolute disgrace that Weipa Town Authority have left Pinaroo Court and other streets without kerbing in.

We spoke to three different people stating the works was a waste of money, and we did not want it in front of our residence. Now see the mess they have left it in.

The health and safety issues are: • Dust left from the taking of all grass on the roadside; • The mud that is left after you have tried to wash away the dirt; • The dust in my house that has been blown in from not having any grass left to cover the roadside; • Slip hazard from the dirt; • Slip hazard from the trenching that someone thinks is a kerbside; • Access to my lawn is only up via a halfmetre cutout; • There is no footpath to walk along now, as it has all been cut away, so now people have to walk on my lawn, or walk through dust or mud; • Drainage - what drainage? After you came and tried to wash dirt away, there are puddles still sitting in my driveway, and those puddles have all turned to mud; • Devaluation of properties with non-kerbing The residents without kerbing should all be sending emails to the Weipa Town Authority, as we pay the same

rates as all other Weipa residents.

All people associated with town office, or the newly-elected council have kerbing.

It is time to ask for a reduction in rates for residents that don’t have kerbing.

I have spoken to Weipa Town Authority, and in the foreseeable future, they have got no money for kerbing.

So send emails, send letters, let’s bug the hell out of Weipa Town Authority, and get a reduction in our rates, or start to get them to kerb at least one street a year.

Weipa Town Authority – stop spending money on useless fixes, and start planning and fixing the town. Start to install kerbing and proper drainage.

You only have to look at the high school when it rains to see that drainage is a problem, the students cannot use the manual arts and home economics building because of continued flooding during the wet season.

Positive response to Catholic school consultation RECENT Catholic Education consultation in Weipa and Napranum has found strong support for a Catholic primary school (Prep to Year 6) in Weipa.

Cairns Catholic Education Services Deputy Executive Director, Br Paul Hough, who led the consultation team, said there was a great deal of enthusiasm and goodwill towards moves to establish a new school. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We encourage local residents to return the questionnaire that was included in the recent Western Cape Bulletin and available at a number of sites in Weipa and Napranum, and is also available on our website www.cns.catholic.edu.au ,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is important for us to

be able to gauge the level of support for a new school as this will help to determine its viability,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Br Paul said the consultation team had successful talks with the Weipa Town Authority, the new Napranum Council, and Rio Tinto, in addition to a number of community groups and agencies.

He said the three essential elements that would guide a decision on the school were community support, access to suitable land, and financial viability which included its affordability for the local community.

He hoped Catholic Education would be able to take a proposal to its Board of Governance and ultimately Bishop James Foley,

later this year. If endorsed the school could open for Term 1, 2015. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are aware that the costs of establishing and running a school in Weipa would be higher than our other schools.

This includes both higher construction costs as well as operating costs such as the need to provide subsidised accommodation for our staff,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We need a business plan that is both economically feasible for the Diocese but ultimately affordable for families.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;And as a Catholic school we would also have to factor in fee concessions for those in genuine need. A cornerstone of our approach is that no child is denied a Catholic education

because of genuine family financial hardship.â&#x20AC;?

Br Paul said Catholic Education would have further talks with Rio Tinto regarding access to land for a Catholic school. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At this stage our preferred site is still to co-locate with the Catholic Church in Boundary Road but we would like to get access to vacant land on either side to provide play and sport areas for the children,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Br Paul said Catholic Education Services would have further consultation with the Napranum community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are aware of the education transition and engagement issues in Napranum and we want to work closely with that community to find some better outcomes.â&#x20AC;?

Controlled burns program to commence in July RIO Tinto Alcan Weipaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2012 controlled burns programme will start at the beginning of July in the Weipa and Napranum areas.

Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa Land and Rehabilitation specialist Brad Warner said controlled burns are essential in reducing the risk associated with uncontrolled wildfires within our community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Controlled burns are an important measure that is used to reduce the intensity and frequency of wildfire in our surrounding areas,â&#x20AC;? Mr Warner said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dry season saw illegally lit wildfires coming into close contact with the community. By running these controlled burns we aim to minimise the risk to our community.â&#x20AC;?

Environment key topic at RTA forum RIO Tinto Alcan Weipaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s approach to managing the environment was the key topic at Rio Tinto Alcan Weipaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second quarterly community forum, held last Tuesday night. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Last weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s forum provided the ideal opportunity for us to talk with the community about the policies and processes we have in place to protect our surrounding environment,â&#x20AC;? Environmental operations specialist Tim Ryan said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Through the forum we were able to hear first-hand about those matters that are of current concern to the community. Attendees asked questions about the flora species we plant during our regeneration process and the forum provided the opportunity to explain the different types and why certain ones are used,â&#x20AC;? Mr Ryan said.

The main presentation included information about Rio Tinto Alcan Weipaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s environmental

based initiatives â&#x20AC;&#x201C; including flora and fauna survey process, regeneration process, weed and fire management and other activities such as dust monitoring.

Census figures released Teens located THE population of Weipa has reached an all-time high of 3400, according to the 2011 Census details released last week by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The population, according to the ABS, compared to 2173 in 2001, and Weipa was ranked at seventh in both the fastest growth rate in the State for 2010-2011 and the largest growth rate for the same period.

The 2010 population was estimated at 3334 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; an increase of 66 or two per cent.

The population has increased annually during those 11 years since 2001, passing 3000 with 3007 in 2006.

The 2009 estimate was 3320.

Napranum has a population of 856, up from 841 in the 2006 Census, and Aurukunâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s population has increased from 1043 in

2006 to 1294 in 2011.

Kowanyama has a population of 1207, up from 1196 (2010) and 1156 (2009) and compares with 1019 in 2001.

Mapoonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s number is at a high of 270, a slight increase from 267 (2010) and 266 (2009) and 209 (2001).

Pormpuraaw has passed the 700 mark, with 708, up 11 from 697 (2010) and 676 (2009), and 630 (2001).

The Lockhart River population totalled 640 in 2011, the same as the 2010 estimate and 21 ahead of the 2009 estimate of 619. However, it is 10 down on the highest ďŹ gure of 650 in 2011.

Australia has a total population of 21,507,717 an increase of 8.3 per cent since the 2006 census, while the population of Queensland was 4,332,737, an increase of 11 per cent from 2006.

FIVE youths who were reported missing after they abandoned their car on the drive from Kowanyama and Pormpuraaw, on Tuesday, June 19, have been found safe and well.

The group, a 19-year-old and four boys, aged between 12 and 16, walked into Pormpuraaw police station on Wednesday, June 20 after they abandoned their bogged vehicle.

Fears were held for the groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s safety after their empty car was found on the Kowanyama-Pormpuraaw Rd. Helicopters in the area were called in to help the search, and a second car with three men also set out to look for the missing group about dusk yesterday but was unable to ďŹ nd them.

New Trunding bridge installed

Transitional accommodation launches RIO Tinto Alcan Weipa’s initiative to help keep families of new employees in contact while permanent housing is secured for them in Weipa launches this week.

Regional flight company Skytrans has been engaged to transport the new employees on the temporary accommodation arrangement

to Cairns, with the first flight departing this week.

“We know housing is a key issue in Weipa, and we also know how important families are to our community,” Rio Tinto Alcan general manager operations JoAnne Scarini said.

“Under this arrangement, a new employee can commence their work with

us knowing that they can regularly visit their family members until their accommodation is finalised,” Ms Scarini said.

Once housing is available for the employee, the family will move permanently to Weipa and the transitional arrangement will cease.

“A small proportion of our workforce will

be involved with this arrangement over the coming year, as we continue to work hard to boost accommodation for the whole community,” Ms Scarini said R i o Ti n t o A l c a n Weipa has commenced work on the $11 million stage two development of Golf Links Estate, which is expected to be completed later this year.

FLOODING issues on the northern side of Circular Way Trunding should be a thing of the past, thanks to the installation of a pedestrian bridge this week.

The Weipa Town Authority has removed a pipe and installed the bridge from Wattle Terrace to Pine Street in an effort to ease flooding

issues, particularly during the wet season.

“This is great work by the WTA staff, and WTA engineer Jamie Campbell and will go a long way to flood mitigation on Circular Way,” WTA chairman Peter McCulkin said at the installation of the bridge this week.

TEN grade 11 and 12 students from Weipa’s Western College had a huge surprise when they got to meet Cowboys superstars Johnathan Thurston and Matty Bowen as part of a four day trip to Townsville as a reward for good school attendance and marks.

Joe Bond, Kailep Parker, Lumbee Pablo, Sheldon Gilbert, Pelina Schuh, Shy-Anne Budby, Kayla Schuh, Sabrina Ase, Aggie Nona and Lillian Woolla were the Western Cape students to earn the trip.

They won the trip for good attendances and grades at school as part of the Cowboys Learn Earn Legend! supporting Indigenous students in Years 11 and 12 to complete their secondary education and move into further study, training or employment.

The students’ hard work and commitment at school was rewarded with each winning prime seats at the June 23 game at Dairy Farmers Stadium between the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys and the Canberra Raiders.

Before that though there was a huge surprise for the students, who were accompanied by College Student Support Officer Dacko Mosby and teacher Emma-Lee Bradford.

the game where they had no idea they would meet the club’s stars Thurston and Bowen.

Aggie was excited and emotional when Thurston and Bowen entered the room and had told some of the fellow students she would “love to steal a kiss from JT’’.

When JT heard about it he was happy to oblige and Aggie kissed him on the cheek.

“This proves if you go to school you get to meet good people and this has been a dream come true.

I idolise the Cowboys players,” she said.

The biggest student, Sheldon Gilbert from Napranum stands at 195cm tall and weighs 124kg and was delighted to meet Bowen in person and pose for snaps with him.

“I played football for Napranum Brothers United in the wet season and will also be playing for them in the Cluster comp to start in July.

It was great to meet Matty and JT,” he said.

The program, funded by the national Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR), and supported by the NRL is spearheaded by the North Queensland Cowboys players.

The players are an integral part of the program working alongside the program coordinators, encouraging students to stay in school, and along with education partners

and local employers, helping Indigenous students identify their career paths and become work-ready.

“We engage with the kids as well as the school and the industry networks linking the kids with the strong industrial job network in the area, such as Rio Tinto,” Cowboys Learn Earn Legend! program coordinator Joel Johnston said.

The students’ trip was assisted through the generosity of QantasLink, which provided substantial airfare discounts, assisting in making their dream school trip a reality.

Far North Queensland area manager Matt Trevett-Lyall said Weipa was one of QantasLink’s important destinations within the region and it was essential that outlying communities benefit from these initiatives, and his team was happy to support the students.

Johnathan Thurston congratulated the group on their efforts, saying the motivated senior students obviously understood the value of education and the importance of doing their best.

“These students were issued a challenge by their teachers to attend school every day and strive to get the best marks they could,’’ he said.

“Obviously they met that challenge, and understand how important it is to stay in school and do well, so they can get good jobs once they finish Year 12.’’

To carb, or not to carb?

CARBOHYDRATES are certainly one of our most important food sources.

It is impossible to survive a long period of time without this essential nutrient. Yet there are many diets that restrict the carbohydrate intake to a minimum level. Other diets promote the intake of high carbohydrates and low fat.

What are carbohydrates and where do we find them in our diet?

Firstly you need to know that there are two types of carbohydrates; complex and simple carbohydrates. The simple ones are usually found in fruit and are naturally healthy. Fruit should be eaten in moderation to receive lots of essential vitamins and minerals.

Unfortunately, you also find simple carbohydrates in processed food such as refined sugars, like soft drinks, reconstituted juices, lollies, chocolate bars, even yoghurt and most other processed foods.

I like to call refined sugars “empty calories”, as you may gain short-term energy from them but they do not supply you with any minerals that help your body to metabolise and use carbohydrates, and therefore are likely to prevent you from losing weight or to gain your optimal health levels.

Refined sugars and carbohydrates are not a healthy option no matter what the labels in the supermarket say.

Complex carbohydrates are usually found in vegetables and whole foods. Generally speaking they are healthy for you. These are divided into starchy and nonstarchy carbohydrates.

bread and potatoes should only make up one quarter of your whole carbohydrate intake for the day as they are likely to put on those extra pounds if they are not burned off by physical activities.

Non-starchy complex carbohydrates are found in most fruit and vegetables and are VERY good for you. Mix colours and textures to make sure that you get a great variety of vitamins and minerals from these colourful yummy food sources. Try to eat many of them raw in salad as cooking and processing may destroy the important vitamins and minerals.

These recommendations are general advice. You may need to adjust the intake to your specific needs especially if your work is very physical or you have any medical conditions.

Generally speaking, you are very likely to improve your health, weight and energy levels if you can follow these simple guidelines: have half of your plate filled with colourful non-starchy vegetables, one quarter of your plate filled with starchy vegetables or whole grain foods and have another quarter of protein.

HAVE you noticed that where ever and when ever Jesus walked and talked about the wrong things being done in Jewish spiritual life, he was hard on the Jewish spiritual leaders but very kind, gentle and forgiving to ordinary people.

Chapter 12 verses 37b to 40 tells of Jesus warning the people about the teachers of the Law (Scribes) who love to preen like peacocks and soak in all the admiration that people give to them.

In the Lord Jesus’ sermon on the mount in Matthew Ch 5 there are three verses that these Scribes should have noted; verses 3, 5, and 7. They state, “Happy are those who know they are spiritually

poor; the Kingdom of heaven belongs to them!

Happy are those who are humble; they will receive what God has promised! Happy are those who are merciful to others; God will be merciful to them!”

Please pray for those of us who are spiritual leaders in our churches today that we do know that we are spiritually poor, have a humble attitude, and be loving, kind and merciful to those placed in our care.

THE Gold Coast did not live up to its name recently when a group of 11 and 12 year-old kids from the communities of Cape York attended the AFL Primary School State Under-12 Championships from June 9 to 13.

The AFL Cape York Crusaders were made up from kids from Badu Island, Weipa, TI, Murray Island, Coen, Aurukun, Pormpuraaw, Kowanyama, Yarrabah, Cooktown and Wujal Wujal.

They encountered wet and freezing conditions along with a couple of hundred of other players vying for selection

for the Queensland under-12 steam, which will compete at the national competition in August.

Most of the kids of the 2012 Crusaders team were selected last September at the AFL Cape York Weipa training weekend and possibly havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t played a game since.

Coach Brad Nunn was initially daunted when asked on the only training day in Cairns, before the trip to the Gold Coast, how the team was meant to score.

Then at the opening ceremony, the kids wanted to know who the orange team were - the umpires?

and athleticism of the Crusaders won out, and despite not winning a game, there was some sensational and gutsy football played.

As the grounds deteriorated to become large puddles and no amount of hot chocolate or coffee could keep the spectators warm, the Crusaders kids gave their best and proudly represented the Cape York Region.

And the best bit of all?

Two of the Crusaders were selected for the Queensland Country team. Zane Stallen from Cooktown and Philip Solomon from Cairns were both handed the Queensland Country jersey, and although

they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get to play the game because of the weather conditions, it was a great accolade for these future AFL champions and the excellent AFL Cape York program.

Thanks must go to Cooktownâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Endeavour Lions Club and the Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch for their generosity, which made it possible for Zane Stallan, Russell Clark and Toby Gillen to travel to the Gold Coast for this amazing opportunity with AFL Cape York.

The program continues with training camps throughout the Cape and no doubt the 2013 Crusaders will be back with a vengeance.

ROUND 16 of the NRL competition came and went with one mighty big bang. The Bulldogs and Storm played out in regional Mackay and with a healthy crowd of 12,000 screaming fans just craving for some Ben Barba magic.

The football gods certainly didn’t let them down. Coach Des Hasler has certainly put his stamp of approval on the Bulldogs and I firmly believe they are genuine contenders for the title.

One of our legends of the game Petro Cievenoceva played his 300th NRL game and the Broncos played some very entertaining footy to win the highly emotional game over the Rabbitohs.

The Dragons and Titans battled it out in wet and windy conditions with the Dragons winning in the closing stages of the game.

Saturday night saw the Cowboys inspired by some Matty Bowen Magic to hand the hapless Raiders one exciting footballing lesson. The slippery Eels just overcome a very much improved

In Townsville on the weekend the Weipa juniors sent an Under 11 team away to compete in the famous Laurie Spina Shield. It was very pleasing to see these great young men and women representing with such great Pride. The excitement machines who were crowd favourites at the carnival played extremely well by winning 4 games having a draw and only 1 loss to unfortunately miss out on a quarter finals berth by a whisker. After being involved with juniors I was the proudest man around seeing the kids enjoying the great experience as well achieving the great results. I think it’s only a matter of time before we have a superstar come from the Cape very soon.

The Northern pride come up against a very good Tweed Heads on the weekend and unfortunately were beaten 30-14.

Scotty’s AFL round-up GEE wiz I’ve made a meal of the tips this year.

While some of the games have been harder to pick than a broken nose it still doesn’t excuse some of the random misses I’ve had over the last few weeks.

Managed three on the weekend seeing me entrenched near the bottom. I did win a free Whopper burger for my troubles last week when I tipped six.

While I’m missing on the tips, I’ve just about got the husband of the year award wrapped up and nicely tucked away. The lengths I’m going to in my fatherly duties better be getting me some serious credit points in the bank, which I can choose to redeem for leave passes for boy’s weekends or cash-in for other occasionally enjoyable pursuits.

Yes, Management did excuse herself from proceedings again last week and took off to Cairns for another girl’s weekend. I was left juggling things around the house again and have got this business of parenthood just about down pat.

We survived on leftovers and icecream, and at one stage when I had visitors, they even brought their own

dinner which we proceeded to eat.

I introduced a thing called the “one chance card” that the kids could use at any time during the week to get out of doing what they were told. The card itself was an old Bowlies membership card that was lying around somewhere, and the kids could produce this at any time if they wished to disobey.

Sure enough, the first request from me saw the card being waved under my nose along with “I don’t think so Dad” as the kids disappeared and left me to my own devices.

I thought this would be a great idea until The Deputy requested some lollies from the lolly jar at about 8.30 one morning, and when I refused the request he queried where my “one chance card was” that allowed me to not do as I was told. The explanation that the cards only worked for kids didn’t seem to placate the little guy much at all.

little handbag in the sky (in our case, the clutch of hand bags in the cupboard) and proceeded to produce a card every time I opened my mouth for the rest of the week.

I couldn’t even get her to answer the question of where all these cards kept appearing from, she produced a card for that!

Anyway, eventually she ran out of cards, sometime after I ran out of patience, by which time I’d done everything anyway and it was time to sit down and watch some footy.

It has to be said that on “Managementfree” weekends the dial doesn’t move much from 504 on the Austar box. The only time it shifts is across to 701 for the kids if I need half an hour’s peace and quiet.

And wasn’t there some good games this week. The Cats look wobbly now, just clinging into the eight after falling short against the Swannies. They can’t expect to win games with a start like that. I don’t like our chances this year (but can’t seem to write them off yet!).

The Bombers and Dockers played a ripper, as did the Pies and the Weagles.

again later in September for sure.

Adelaide were the disappointment for me going down to the Roos like that.

I guess we have to remember that they were rubbish last year and it will be hard for them to keep up the standard they have set early this year.

The Auskick has been quiet on Sundays with a few turning up. Next school term Jamie from AFL Cape York looks like he’ll be based here on and off and this will mean we’ll get a bit more organised and stir things up a bit. Stay tuned for further info.

This week we see a full round of games again after the split rounds of byes. I’ve gone for the Hawks, Pies, Crows, Eagles, Swans, Bombers, Cats, Lions and Saints.

The Swans are looking the goods at the moment and any team that meets them in September in Sydney had better be ready to play.

Team Schooner and Team Mojito claim season one squash titles WEIPA Squash Club held its A and B grade fixtures grand final night last Friday.

Congratulations to Team Schooner, who emerged the winners of A grade, with three of the four matches being decided in three game sets, and surprisingly none going to five games, as is the norm.

A4 Jay Dumbleton defeated his opponent runner-up Team Pint’s Jimmy Baira in a match with a degree of difficulty not reflected in the score (3-0).

A3 Sherie Hinschen lost the first game to Laurie Raleigh, then reversed the tables and took the second, forced the third to long, but was then crushed in the fourth (1-3).

A2 Grant Foster thought he had it easy in the first game, but then Rod Bielby forced the second to long, however Grant rallied forth to claim the match (3-0).

A1 Luke Dorsett met with much resistance in the first and third games against Tom Murray.

Although it was not enough for Tom to claim any games (3-0), all games were of the usual high standard of entertainment and athleticism.

B grade Team Mojito also deserve congratulations as they narrowly defeated runner-up Team Blue Lagoon by three games in all which was quite an achievement considering most matches went to four games.

Matches were played on the two outside courts while the A grade matches took place on the middle court, so B8 Lucy Boxall suffered defeat at the hands of Renee Williams (0-3) at the same time as B4 Fiona Newsome shared the same misfortune against Nicole Dearling.

Despite Fiona taking the first two games, Nicole fought back strongly and took the next three in the only five game match of B grade (2-3).

B7 Adrian Costello managed

to snatch the first game from Kristie McManus, but then Kristie convincingly defeated Adrian in the next three games (1-3).

While B2 Ben Braun at face value outplayed his opponent Stephen Borg, there were lots of handouts which do not reflect in the result (3-0).

B6 Kristie Moran claimed a hard-fought win against Luke Mann (3-0) at the same time as B5 Ian Newsome lost his first game to Bianca Borg, however he remembered he was playing for the finals and powered forward to take the next three games convincingly (3-1).

B1 Adam Woodhouse and Justin

Hyytinen played a game of power and might with Justin taking the first game, then forcing the second game to long, but Adam winning that one and the following two in the deciding match of the B grade fixtures (3-1).

As the standard of players has elevated enormously, attributable in part to the fact that several were new players (and obviously natural sportsmen/women), and others were re-trying the game, it was difficult for the committee to decide to whom to present awards, but the successful recipients were: Best players: Grant Foster (A) and Ian Newsome (B); most improved: Jay Dumbleton (A) and

Renee Williams (B); clubperson awards: Rod Bielby (A) and Justin Hyytinen (B).

Personally, I was surprised to hear a sturdy dozen pushed on into the early hours of the morning, especially after I witnessed the antics of four-player racquet ball with seemingly no rules worthy of mention and barefoot tactics! Far better to be spectator of this sport than a participant, I reckon.

Gradings for season two commence the week after school holidays.

Sri Lankans win first two cricket matches SCHERGER Immigration Detention Centre has been abuzz with the excitement of being invited to compete in this year’s annual Weipa Cricket Tournament.

As you would imagine, Sri Lankans love cricket and we have more than 100 eager players wanting to join in, so luckily we have been able to mix our teams around to give them all the opportunity to play.

So far, we have played two consecutive Saturdays and have proved stiff competition for the locals and won both of our matches, 59/54 and last week 67/20.

During our first game, our bowler managed to break the bails with his fast bowling, which in turn has given us our own ashes!

The clients really enjoy the atmosphere, the barbecue and the opportunity to see how we Australians enjoy our leisure time.

Scherger’s next match is on July 14, so watch out Weipa, there just might be a new national team player amongst them.

Anyone interested in volunteering at the centre to deliver a program such as art and craft, music lessons etc or would like to invite clients to participate in a community event such as the cricket tournament in Weipa, can contact Gina Sfettina, programs manager via email gina.sfettina@ serco-ap.com.au.

I WAS lucky enough this week to get a ride with Rob and Rod from Sea Swift and we left Rocky Point ramp just on daylight, heading to some of Robâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s secret marks at Duyfken Point.

After surviving the washing machine, we finally rounded the point and headed for the ďŹ rst mark.

I soon realized that 20 and 30lb line is not up to scratch on these reefs, and after a couple of bust offs Rob gave me a come-here outďŹ t.

Plastics werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t working so we used squid for some small stripies and small tuskies. The only good ďŹ sh we hooked were hit by sharks.

We moved a couple of times but always the same result, small ďŹ sh make it to the top, better ďŹ sh eaten by sharks.

We then had engine problems so we headed for home ďŹ shless.

Fishing down south using a houseboat as a base BBCDJT Fishing team better known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;the pretty in pink ďŹ shing teamâ&#x20AC;? had a memorable weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ shing.

CENTRAL Cape Suns junior rugby league side from Weipa performed strongly at the prestigious Laurie Spina Shield carnival in Townsville on June 22 and 23, winning five, drawing one and losing one of their allotted matches.

A record total of 64 under-11 teams contested what is one of Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest junior league carnivals in eight pools of eight sides. That is six more teams than in 2011.

The carnival was organised by the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys in honour of their first club captain Laurie Spina. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To set another record this year is fantastic news and I looked forward to seeing all the kids enjoying their rugby

Innisfail Brothers won the Laurie Spina Shield, presented

by Guildford Coal, for the second time by scoring a 16-12 win against Yeppoon Seagulls in a see-sawing final at Dairy Farmers Stadium last Saturday as one of the curtain raisers to the Cowboys versus Canberra Raiders NRL game.

Toyota Cowboys player development manager Dean Payne said the great response from junior clubs across North and Central Queensland was an indication of how much enjoyment the Laurie Spina Shield provides to young footballers.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;To set another record this year shows how positive the word of mouth about the Laurie Spina is and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve taken the carnival to a new level this year with the help of Guildford Coal.

Sixty-four teams is the capacity for us at the moment. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Once again weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had teams from across a wide region of Queensland come together in Townsville for two days of footy and fun. It proves how popular rugby league, and this competition is,â&#x20AC;? Payne said.

Nine teams played in the inaugural carnival in 1997 and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s estimated that this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event, with around 900 players and their families, contributed more than $1 million to the Townsville community.
