Highway at the heart of election

By MARJO HALLOWELL ROADS, housing, freight costs and education have evolved as the major issues within the Nhulunbuy electorate in Saturday’s Northern Territory election.

A poll of the three candidates by the

Arafura Times this week indicates that improvements to the Central Arnhem Highway is a key issue.

Labor’s Lynne Walker, CLP’s Allen Fanning and Independent Kendall Trudgen all have strong opinions on the road improvements.

Lynne Walker said Labor has already

secured a firm funding commitment from the Australian government for a three-stage, $15-million project to deliver upgrades to crossings at Mainorou, Goyder River and Donydji Creek.

“By the time all three crossings are completed, it is expected this important

access corridor will only be closed for one to two weeks a year,” Mrs Walker said.

Mr Trudgen supports the upgrades of the Central Arnhem Highway in collaboration with Land Owners, and, with consideration given to Customs control to limit drug and alcohol trafficking,

and to control pest and weed transit.

“An end-to-end road at Elcho Island is also a serious need,” he said.

Mr Fanning does not agree and did not support a bridge for the Goyder River but would focus on the black-spot between Nhulunbuy and Gapuwiyak.

THE clubhouse was packed to capacity as the Fishing Club celebrated 35 years with a quiz night on Saturday.

The Nhulunbuy Regional Sports Fishing Club (NRSFC) cast their lines into the water for the first time 35 years ago and has grown from strength to strength, improving conditions for local anglers over the years.

The club was originally established to promote and support sports fishing, the recreational pastime of chasing big game fish on light line tackle, in and around the East Arnhem Region.

The celebration was also the official opening of the newly renovated kitchen and bar area and this incorporated a number of other improvements to the club house.

Located at the Captain Cook Community Centre the rennovations come a little over a year since they relocated to the site.

The NRSFC is constantly advocating on behalf of local anglers ensuring the recreational fishers can continue to enjoy the waters which surround Gove.

They have maintained the local boat ramp for all anglers even though only about 10 per cent of users are members.

There are a number of benefits for people joining the club which runs a a number of competitions and information sessions throughout each year.

Women share their experiences over lunch ABOUT 50 women gathered at Macassan’s Restaurant on Saturday as the Chamber of Commerce and Celebrating Women in the North (CWIN) held their first Business Women’s lunch.

Executive officer of the East Arnhem Chamber of Commerce Mache Eloff and Jennifer Peers, from CWIN, organised the event and hope to run similar lunches every three months.

Guest speakers for the event were Marjo Hallowell, editor of the Arafura Times and Kelly Murray from Gove

Tackleworld and Outdoors.

Both women spoke on the challenges faced by businesses within the Gove Peninsula.

Mrs Murray said she came to Gove for a more-relaxed lifestyle - that was before she and her husband, Jeff, took on the local sports shop.

She told of the challenges they faced and how, by joining the Tackleworld group, their buying power had improved.

Mrs Hallowell spoke on the work of the Bousen family who owns the Regional and Remote Newspapers Group which publishes not only the

Arafura Times but also the Torres News,Western Cape Bulletin and the Cooktown Local News.

Both acknowledged the importance of being involved within the communities in which they worked.

Ms Elofe said she was delighted by the success of the event and was keen to see it remain on the Chamber’s calendar.

Voting has begun in the NT election VOTING in the Northern Territory election began last Wednesday with East Arnhem voters starting on Monday as people from some of the remote communities headed along to mobile polling stations.

About two dozen teams from the Australian Electoral Commission, based in Darwin and Alice Springs, will visit 230 locations throughout the Territory until polling day on August 25.

The teams will travel by fourwheel-drive vehicles, aircraft and even helicopters to some of the Territory’s most remote areas.

Territory Electoral Commissioner Bill Shepheard said mobile polling involves almost a third of the total voting population.

“The most-remote communities are probably those near the borders of Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland,” he said.

“We send teams out from the regional centres at Alice Springs and Darwin and we go to the four corners of the Northern Territory.”

More than 100,000 people are enrolled to vote in the upcoming Territory election.

Bookies’ odds: Walker to win, Trudgen shortens, Fanning blows

By MARK BOUSEN SITTING Labor Member Lynne Walker remains at virtually unbackable odds to retain the seat of Nhulunbuy at the State election on Saturday, but the big mover in the markets is Independent Kendall Trudgen.

But the CLP has shortened in the markets to form Government which would force Mrs Walker onto the Opposition benches.

Mrs Walker’s odds have edged out to $1.18 after reaching a campaign low of $1.14 from

$1.15, during the last week, according to sportingbet.com.au Mr Trudgen who opened the campaign at $10, blew out to $13 during the last week, but has shortened signifiicantly into $8 in recent days.

CLP’s Allen Fanning had shortened in the markets from $6.50 to $6, but has now blown to the same level as Mr Trudgen on $8.

While Mrs Walker is regarded as a “certainty” for the ALP, sportingbet.com.au has re-iterated its belief the CLP will form government, ending

Labor’s 11-year term in office The CLP has shortened 10c during the last week to $1.65 from $1.75, back to the odds of a fortnight ago.

The ALP too has returned to the market of two weeks ago, blowing out to $2.20 from $2.05, its shortest price of the campaign.

Nothing has changed across the 25 seats in the election, with the bookmaking firm rating the CLP to win 13 seats, ALP 11 and Independent one.

(ALP) is at $1.15 in the seat of Arnhem, with her CLP opponent Larissa Lee at $4.75.

In Arafura, CLP’s Francis Xavier Maralampuwi is at $1.85, just shading Labor’s Dean Rioli at $1.90 in what is shaping as the closest seat in the election.

Gerry McCarthy (ALP) has edged out to $1.18 in the seat of Barkly, with Rebecca Healy (CLP) tightening to $4.40.

Gerry Wood is the Independent favoured to win the seat of Nelson at $1.05, and could hold the balance of power in the new Parliament.

CLPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Milton Ballantyne held the seat from 1974 to 1980, with Labor holding it since - Dan Leo (1980-1990), Syd Stirling (1990-2008) and Mrs Walker since 2008.

Mrs Walker won with 1936 votes or 74.2% of the vote, a drop of 1.3% from Laborâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vote in the previous election.

The seat has more than 4000 voters, and covers an area of more than 80,000 sq km.

Mrs Walker said the upgrade to the road will provide competition for freight into Nhulunbuy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;However, until a competitor enters the sea freight business, we will continue to see unrealistic and opportunistic charges levelled at us. I am aware of barge companies from Darwin and the east coast currently exploring options,â&#x20AC;? she said.

All three candidates agree that lack of accommodation to be another key issue.

The availability of housing in Nhulunbuy township is directly impacted by the fact that the town sits on a special purpose lease (SPL), with the mining company the head lessee. This lease is on Aboriginal land trust.

The opening up of land for new development has stalled due to a dispute between the Northern Land Council (NLC) and one of the traditional land-

owner groups. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With business confidence low on the back of the mining companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s future, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s doubtful that investors see new housing as a priority right now in light of this uncertainty,â&#x20AC;? Mrs Walker said.

The Arafura Times asked each candidate to highlight another key issue and Mrs Walker said education was a major focus.

This was targetting upgrades and improvements across the schools and Homeland learning centres. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Addressing school attendance and attracting and retaining dedicated school staff are so critically important,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Mr Fanning said the CLP would commit $1.5 million to go towards the Mud Wharf precinct and indicated the CLP would spend $125million on Homeland improvements over the next 10 years.

The elephant in the room, and most-important political issue for our region, according to Mr Trudgen, is that we have two systems of law in day-to-day operation across East Arnhem Land - mainstream and Yolngu systems. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If we truly wish to have sustainable and equitable development with safer communities, official recognition of Yolngu systems of law and pathways to connection with mainstream systems must be achieved.,â&#x20AC;? Mr Trudgen said.

A GOVE woman has taken out second place as Tattooist of the Year at an awards presentation in Sydney last week, attended by cosmetic tattooists from across Australia.

Meltopia Grandelis was nominated for 2012 Cosmetic Tattooist of the Year earlier this year.

And on Monday, August 13, she was delighted to have been recognised for her work.

Ms Grandelis originally started cosmetic tattooing as a hobby when she was living in Ipswich.

Twelve months ago she and her husband moved to Nhulunbuy and she decided to establish a home-based business to keep herself occupied while he was at work.

Registered with NT Health, accredited and fully insured Ms Grandelis is a committee member of the Association of Cosmetic Tattooists.

The presentations were the final event for the two-day training sessions held in Sydney as part of the International Beauty Expo. International experts conducted the training and Ms Grandelis said it was a great networking opportunity.

“No one down there has any concerns about me taking clients away from them as we live up here,” she said.

Her work involves not only the cosmetic eyeliners and lip tattoos but also remedial work such as working on fine lines and wrinkles as well as working with skin grafts and burns.

“The tattooing loosens the skin and encourages the body to produce collagen to aid the healing process,” she said.

As a paramedical tattooist she also works on nipples if women have had treatment and, if there is no nipple present, she can create the illusion with a three dimensional tattoo.

Ms Grandelis also does tattoo removal using the ‘Tattoo Vanish method. She’sbeen asked to become the Australian Trainer for ‘Tattoo Vanish’, which would also mean that she would be their first International trainer.

Some of the work she does helps fix an issues for women - sometimes it is a big issue for them, she said.

Ms Grandelis also does spray tans and eyelash extensions and since she has been in Gove has carried out about 200 procedures.

Beware of $50 fraud

POLICE are currently investigating several counterfeit $50 notes circulating throughout Darwin last week.

Police have received four separate reports of an imitation $50 note being used at various retail outlets, including Darwin’s Mindil Beach Sunset Markets last Thursday night.

The counterfeit notes seized by Police are described as being made of thick plastic and are heavier than the regular $50 note.

The number ‘50’ is absent from the clear window panel and the watermark fails to appear when the note is placed under UV lighting.

Sergeant Jason Blake from the Major Fraud Squad said the imitation looks genuine at first glance, however, it does not have the characteristic feel of a regular $50 note.

They arrived on August 13 and finish up on August 24 and are located at Miwatj Health Corporation.

Breast screening is free, takes less than 30 minutes and does not require a doctor’s referral.

The biggest risk factors for breast cancer are being a woman and being aged over 50.

Women aged 50 to 69 are strongly encouraged to have a mammogram every two years. This allows most cancers to be found at an early stage. Early detection of breast cancer offers women the best chance of successful treatment and recovery.

Screening mammograms are specialised x-rays that aim to show changes that are too small to be felt by hand. Specialist doctors can then further investigate any changes, although most changes are not cancer.

No matter what your age, if you notice any new or unusual changes in your breast, see your GP without delay. Always be breast aware.

KIDS need to get on their dancing shoes as there will be a Blue Light Disco at the Town Hall on September 7.

Little kids will start at 6.45pm and older kids (High School) at 8.30pm and will go until 10.30 pm.

The event is being professionally put on by the Blue Light Disco Team from Darwin.

The event will be attended by Police and assisted by Anglicare. Parents are welcome to come along and the whole event is free.

The Tennis Club will be doing a sausage sizzle and soft drinks for parents and kids out the front at normal prices.

The Blue Light team will be selling glow sticks and torches on the night.

It is believed this is the first trip to Nhulunbuy by the team and they are looking to future events if this proves successful.

We’re heavier, taller, in more pain THE average Australian is a little heavier and taller than a decade ago, according to health reports released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

On average, men and women aged 18 and over were both around 3kg heavier

in 2007-08 than they were in the mid-1990s. However the height increase of men was almost twice that of women, at 1.2 cm for men and 0.7 cm for women.

In 2007-08 over half of all Australians (55 per cent of men and 64 per cent of women) had

a waistline measurement that is considered by health experts to increase their risk of health conditions.

Another new report shows that 10 per cent of Australian adults experienced severe or very severe pain in the last month.

Playgroup to host a garage sale THE Nhulunbuy Playgroup is hosting a garage sale to help raise some much-needed funds.

The sale is on Saturday, September 8, and will be held at the Playgroup in the Captain Cook Community Centre.

Stalls cost $15 and anyone can come along with a stall on the day.

Ms Jo Phillips said the Playgroup has been doing quite a lot of improvements to the facilities lately, including putting in a grassed area and paving in front of the sheds.

“We have also just put in a new toilet block so the fundraising day it will be raising money

to help cover the cost of putting those things in and maintaining them.

“We also need to put in a new pathway down the entrance of playgroup as it has changed and we always need to purchase new and replace old,toys so it will certainly go to all of that.a Stalls cost $15 and anyone can come along with a stall on the day.

 letters to the editor Fanning’s plans could set alcohol policies back years SO far the only issues I’ve heard from Mr Fanning sound like a party political broadcast on behalf of the pub and tourism industry.

His committment to getting rid of the NT’s container deposit scheme reads like the direct policy of the alcohol and beverage industry and also many local business people.

Mr Fanning’s entire election strategy seems to revolve around regurgitating the same tired old lines that the publicans have been running for decades.

Also Mr Fanning’s support for getting rid of the banned drinkers’ register would tip some very bad people back onto the grog overnight.

Many people will remember the blood and guts of the old days where people were bashed openly in our town square and where our children witnessed violence and depravity on an almost daily basis.

Why does Mr Fanning seem to want people to be laying around drunk off their heads in

Endeavour Square at 10 o’clock in the morning again in a headlong return to the bad old days of the CLP ?

In order to answer this question we need to understand who exactly the shadowy people are who run the CLP in Nhulunbuy and what they stand to gain.

Unfortunately, I don’t think their faces are going to feature in any of Mr Fanning’s election material any time soon, so the general population will never get a really good look at who is actually

pulling the strings.

But I believe that they might be people who stand to make even more money by getting the banned drinkers’ register abolished.

This would be their gain paid for with our pain.

In my opinion, to give Mr Fanning and his cronies government in Nhulunbuy would be like giving Dracula the key to the blood bank.

Voters have the ultimate say in who forms government WHEN I put my hand up for pre-selection and politics more than four years ago, I think it would be fair to admit that I didn’t fully realise what I was putting my hand up for.

But what I did know was that I was determined to stand by my long-held and unshakeable belief in the Labor values of equity, social justice, a fair go and the creation of opportunity for people, no matter where they live or the colour of their skin.

Four years on I have been on an incredible journey and learning curve to represent the very diverse electorate of Nhulunbuy as part of the Henderson Labor government in the Territory parliament.

Along the way I’ve witnessed record investment into our

region to support continuous improvement in education, health, housing, community safety, roads and infrastructure.

The campaign for the seat of Nhulunbuy this time around has been very different to that of 2008 with more challenges and changes to grapple with.

I don’t believe the CLP has offered a compelling or viable alternative and has run a very negative campaign plucked straight out of CLP’s central campaign office in Darwin.

It’s not clear what the ‘five point plan’ is (or how it will be achieved) and I’m not the only one who thinks the lavish promise of $1.5 million for the boat ramp upgrade naive and short-sighted.

Lifestyle is important to people

here but to lob all that money into one asset, not to mention an asset that has no tenure over it, is a serious case of pork-barreling.

The Independent candidate has run a campaign predominantly on Indigenous affairs with a claim to be a strong and independent voice, but many non-indigenous residents are left wondering where their interests lie.

Mobile polling starts this week around the Homelands and culminates on Saturday when the booths are open 8am - 6pm at Nhulunbuy Primary, Yirrkala Church and Galiwin’ku Training Centre, and I plan to be at all of them.

With this in mind, Jennifer Peers says people should be aware of a new guide.

The guide, which has been developed by the Meetings and Events Industry of Australia in partnership with the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, is designed to help those

responsible for organising events and to ensure they are accessible for people with disabilities - whether they are presenters, sponsors or participants.

It is based on the experience of organisers who are responsible for creating accessible events.

BY ALF WILSON story and photos WEST Arnhem Land 20-year-old Farra Nabobbob is heading home at the end of August and will be telling family and friends about performing at one of Australia’s biggest cultural Fests.

Farra was part of the Aboriginal dance group Wulgurukaba Walkabouts, who performed at the 18th annual Cultural Fest held at Strand Park in Townsville from August 15-19.

The Arafura Times was at the opening night which produced a record crowd.

Farra said he enjoyed dancing on the main stage before a big crowd and told how he got invited to join the Wulgurukaba Walkabouts.

“It was in Townsville here where I play rugby union, and I was asked to join by group member Ashley Saltner jnr and I was happy to do that,” Farra said.

The enthusiastic Farra said he was going home to Kakadu in Arnhem Land in late August and would be telling everybody about the huge Cultural Fest.

It was estimated several hundred visitors from the NT were at the event at which there was 28 food stalls.

In the Global Village there were 75 displays.

More than 60,000 people were expected over the five days.

Telstra searches for musical talent BIG name Australian artists Shannon Noll, James Blundell, Ella Hooper and Catherine Britt have joined forces to create an original song to mark 10 years of the Telstra Road to Discovery music development program, and are calling on Northern Territory independent artists to now enter this year’s program.

To celebrate the milestone the artists collaborated with current and former Telstra Road to Discovery winners in the ultimate jam session during a road trip from Sydney to Tamworth last week where it all began 10 years ago.

Telstra Road to Discovery is one of Australia’s most -recognised talent development programs, across a range of genres including blues and roots, folk, country and alternative country.

The rocket man takes off during Science Week THEY call him ‘the rocket man’, ‘the tall one’ or just the ‘cool teacher who loves to blow things up’. . . all in the name of science of course.

Mr Peter van Dam goes by many names along with his official title as middle school coordinator and science teacher but, with each annual Science Day at Nhulunbuy Christian College, his celebrity grows.

“Teaching Science is just fantastic it encourages curious minds, a sense of awe when it comes to this astonishing world we live in and a passion for working things out.

“Even after more than 25 years of teaching, watching understanding dawn on students faces is still just so rewarding and a work day that

centres around launching rockets 300 metres in the air - what’s not to love,” he said.

More than 1000 science events take place around Australia during National Science Week and this year the theme is ‘energy’. For the past 15 years it’s been an annual opportunity for schools in particular to enjoy and explore the wonders and benefits of science.

In Nhulunbuy every class from Transition to Year 9 at NCC experiences a special rotating science class where older students demonstrate a number of different experiments, showing that science is applicable to everyday life and a lot of fun.

This year’s demonstration and

hands-on activities included everything from live snakes and dissecting a cane toad to understanding the power of magnets, electricity and different gases. But, of course, the highlight of the day was launching rockets.

Mr van Dam drove the specialised sports rockets in from Darwin. In seconds each of the five rockets shot at least 300 metres in the air.

It’s unclear what was more exciting for students, the tension counting down to blast off or the race to recover the valuable engines when they floated back to earth.

It was Jasper Jakupec from Year 3’s first Science

Day and it made a big impression.

and she kept a close eye on the young pelican in class. The students kept their distance but Pal behaved beautifully, apart from leaving a small ‘deposit’ much to the amusement of his young fans.

Pal’s second visit was a more unexpected one... gliding down to join NCC teacher Sharon Beer as she walked home from school.

To say Mrs Beer was surprised would be an understatement. At that stage she wasn’t aware of Pal and his friendly tendencies.

The learning enhancement coordinator and her family are new to Nhulunbuy this year and life is full of Territory surprises.

“My husband Glenn and boys Patrick and Sean have really taken to the northern relaxed lifestyle, and with experiences like meeting Pal, well it’s just an awesome place to live and work really.”

Time to sign-up for beach volleyball

IT’S time to line up those shots as the annual beach volleyball competition approaches.

The annual event, organised by Nhulunbuy Rotary Club, will be held at Middle Beach on September 16 It is one of the Rotary Club’s major fundraising events for the year and caters for family involvement.

The Rotary Club supports many local clubs and organisations throughout the year and relies on fundraising events, such as the beach volleyball and annual quiz night to raise funds to be able to continue this support.

Nhulunbuy Rotary Club President Lyn Whitford said last year there were 46 teams entered in the competition.

“As always, the skill levels vary from team to team but everyone has a great time,” she said.

“This year we are reminding everyone to bring extra shade and to do the slip, slop and slap. We want to do our best to protect from over exposure to the sun and skin cancer.

“As in previous years, the Gove Peniunsula Surf Club will be patrolling the beach throughout the day.

“The Speedway will be providing the food services, Rotary the bar and the Tennis Club will be in charge of the children’s activities.

“We are also so pleased to have the multi talented Gove FM to keep us both informed and entertained.”

Registrations close on September 1 at noon.

Registration forms can be obtained from thE Walkabout Lodge, Gove Pharmacy, the town Noticeboard and at the Rotary stall on Saturday, August 25.

Variety Queens present Oojah on Saturday

Oojah Cockraine will feature at the Variety Queens bash on Saturday.

A MAJOR fundraiser for the Nhulunbuy Variety Queens is being held on Saturday when they present their ‘Oojah on the Grass Bash’.

Variety Queen Angie Moyle said this is their major fundraiser of the year.

The country theme is sure to see many don their jeans and Akubras as the band Oojah Cockraine reunite for this event which will be held at the Gun Club.

The band has played at previous Variety

functions in Gove and, although some had moved away, they are returning to continue their support of the local Variety Queens.

Ms Moyle said the lead singer, Lara Conaghan, had dedicated her time to the Queens while she was in Gove.

“She always come back to help us out and she is as passionate about what we do as the Queens are.”

The Variety fundraising year ends at the end of August and the local group hopes

to retain their title of highest fundraisers in the NT. Funds raised go to sick and disadvantaged children in the Territory.

There will be a licensed bar and food and transport is included in the price of the tickets.

This is an over 18 event and the bus leaves town at 6.30pm.

Tickets are available through the Qantas office in Endeavour Square.

Plastic, like diamonds, is forever BETWEEN 30 million and 50 million plastic bags enter the environment as litter in Australia each year.

These environmentally damaging bags - produced to be used once and then thrown away - are a symbol of our disposable society.

When future generations reflect on our convenience-maximising consumer behaviour, the permanence of disfigured, shredded, flying white flowers (A.K.A. plastic bags) will testify to a discard culture and dispose culture in the name of brief convenience.

Like a globally pervasive cancer, plastic bags everywhere entangle, drown, asphyxiate, and starve animals that mistake their wavy, sun-struck allure for food.

Bags adorn trees and fences, becoming the new indestructible urban weed. A colony of bags visible from space (it is 15 million square kilometres!) has accrued in the Pacific, an enormous soup of tiny plastic nodules.

We know the bags do untold damage, but we only act on what costs us directly.

Most of us are aware that plastic bags create litter, kill wild life, clog drains, inflicting wounds on wild and inhabited environs alike.

But unfortunately, awareness of the peril of plastic has not changed behaviour at the check-out; if offered bags at no additional cost or inconvenience, most consumers will, without a second thought, allow their groceries or takeaway to be packed into lightweight 35-micron-thin polyethylene plastic bags that are usually

used only once more to line their bins or pick up after their dogs.

When it matters most, the community’s apparent support for reducing plastic bag use is not backed up by altered packing behaviour at the check-out.

Most consumers do not: • Re-use bags for storage or carriage until they are irreparable; • Recycle single use bags; • Bring their own durable reinforced bags; • Refuse single use bags; • Ask for biodegradable or compostable bags.

Bear in mind that no human has, or will ever witness the entirety of a discarded nonbiodegradable bag’s natural decomposition since it was invented by Swedish engineer Sten Gustaf Thulin in the early 1960s and patented in 1965.

We can only surmise that bags will take 50 generations to decompose, with most travelling through, or ending up in, Earth’s three elements: the soil (as landfill), water, and briefly afloat in air.

According to the European Union (EU) Executive, Europe alone produced 3.4 million tonnes of plastic bag carriers - the equivalent in weight of 2 million cars - in 2008. Only 6% of plastic bags were recycled in the EU in 2010.

Plastic bags are extraordinary travellers;

I have had occasion to clear plastic litter delivered by trans-Siberian currents to a remote uninhabited Norwegian Arctic beach.

One million plastic bags are used every minute worldwide - plastic is endemic at supermarkets, groceries, liquor stores, pharmacists, newsagents, and retailers.

Whilst heart-rending photos of plasticstruck albatrosses, whales, seals, and turtles have not altered consumer behaviour, bans and levies on bags have clearly been effective.

Ireland’s imposition of a plastic bag levy, or “plastax”, originally at 15 Euro cents later rising to 22 cents, slashed personal use from 328 bags per person a year in 2002 to just 18 in 2010. There was a 95% reduction in plastic bag litter and 90% of shoppers were using long-life bags within a year.

The average Australian uses a staggering 345 plastic bags a year. On the encouraging side, lightweight check-out bags are now banned in South Australia, the Northern Territory and the ACT, where bag use and acceptability has since declined precipitously. Target banned bag use in June 2009.

Australia still has some way to go, considering bans were imposed as early as 2008 in China (which had a three billion a year pre-ban habit), a country which cannot boast a strong record of eco-advocacy.

After deadly floods attributed to storm drain obstruction by plastic products, Bangladesh has also taken action, as has South Africa, Kenya and Uganda.

The United Nations has called for

plastic bag bans to go global.

Meanwhile, the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) argues that reusing durable bags will lead to cross-contamination and infection-risks.

The ARA has never acknowledged that all consumers (including those who make shopping trips with privately purchased durable bags) pay to subsidise single-use bags by paying higher retail prices. Some argue that the substitution of lightweight plastic bags with bin liners, paper bags, cardboard boxes and durable bags that are used just once could exact greater environmental cost.

Don’t wait for policy: how to help now While the debate on plastic bag ban and levy rages, we can individually help by: • Support plastic bag bans or levies: 70% of 15,000 EU residents polled in 2011 support such a restrictive policy; • Use bags made from long-life, sustainably-sourced materials that last years; • Bring your own green durable bags for

grocery, takeaway, and even retail therapy; each needs to be used at least four times for a net eco-benefit, but they can be re-used over 100 times. As a lesser option, ask for biodegradable and compostable bags at the checkout; • Bring back damaged bags to recycling collection points; • Carry single items or a few items in your pockets or hands; • Refuse single-use lightweight bags even if they are apparently free; • Advocate for synthetic reusable bags as a must-have accessory for the eco-aware, as well as discounted groceries or Loyalty Points for declining bags; • Object to discardable plastic drink and food containers • Use newspaper for bin liners, or hose down unlined bins Plastic, somewhat like diamonds, is passed over many generations - an eternity in human terms.

Let us all try restricting its supply and constraining its use, for the sake of our living, breathing, world.

Caitlyn Mitchell wins back-to-back Gove Open titles

By NIKKI MAYER GOVE Open is the biggest tournament on the club’s calendar for local events. With a $3000 prize pool up for grabs in the Open division and National Points in the Open, 16 and Under and 12 and Under events, entries have come from as far south as Melbourne in past years.

Local club members entered to try their hand at taking the title, but visiting players from Darwin and Alice Springs were also here to put up the challenge.

The men’s open singles was strongly contested with a field of 16 players. Regulations force all matches at this level to be best of three sets, which was a tough ask for the local members.

The club was well represented in the men’s with Damian Butler, Christo Esterhuyse, Derrian Rungan Jake Mayer, Brendan O’Sullivan, Paul Mery and Scott Sims all making it through to the quarter-finals.

The semis were closely contested and could have gone to anyone but it was the final that gave you the prize money and points and unfortunately the title did not stay in Gove.

It was Ben Lye, from Darwin, that had control taking the title from local player Damian Butler. A great game to watch and some awesome ground strokes saw a hard hitting and tactical game.

Bonnie Usher, from Alice Springs, had a tough game against me in the semi. I thought I was going to come out on top of this match leading at 5-0 in the first set. But the wheels fell off and I lost 7-5. The second set was game for game but Usher got the jump at 3-all and went onto win the second 6-3.

In the opposite semi Caitlyn was unstoppable with great composure and focus defeating Vanessa Stacy 6-0, 6-0.

In the final Caitlyn remained focused to finish the job against Usher with beautiful ground strokes and consistent serving. Bonnie had no answer for Caitlyn’s strength and aggressiveness in her play.

The men’s open doubles was on.

Very strong teams made for some great tennis to watch. Jake Mayer/Derrian Rungan fought out a great match against Damian Butler/ Christo Esterhuyse.

This was a very tight game and could have

gone either way. Mayer/Rungan won the first set 7-5 but Esterhuyse/Butler held to take the second 6-4. This meant a match tie breaker to be the decider. Butler/ Esterhuyse got an early lead and closed out the tiebreak 10-4. This put them into the final against Ben Lye/Ben Jones.

The men’s final attracted a good crowd.

And the spectators weren’t disappointed. Strong net play was going to be the decider of this match, but Ben Lye would take it to the locals and drive the ball at the net player and provided some great passing shots.

The first set went head to head with players holding serve, then not holding serve. A very tense game with a few personality outbursts. At 5 all it was anyone’s first set, but Esterhuyse/Butler held on to win the first set 7-5. Jones/ Lye tried every tactic and shot in the book, but Butler/Esterhuyse held in the second taking the match with a second set win 6-4.

The women’s doubles was pretty one sided with Caitlyn Mitchell/Bonnie Usher too strong a team for the others to even get close.

In the men’s social singles also had some great tennis with Des O’Sullivan dusting off the cobwebs once again to become the winner over Brendan Muldoon.

Caitlyn Mitchell in action In gusty conditions the men also had to compete with the wind making playing pool. Some great shots and plenty of fun for conditions non-favourable. A great game all team members, but it was the Mery’s that between Des and Brendan but it was Des with took the title in 2012.

Jake Mayer teamed up with the singles singles. winner, Caitlyn Mitchell took out their pool Catherine Jones had a crack at the title, but it was Katrina O’Sullivan being too strong in and in the opposite pool Nicky Mayer was teamed up with the men’s singles winner, the final winning 6-3.

In the social mixed doubles, it was husband Ben Lye going through undefeated in their and wife combinations fighting it out for the pool. This set the scene for a great final, but prize. A total of six teams played off on the it was Mitchell and Mayer that played the Saturday night but it was the winners from better game.

Lye and Mayer fought back to stay in each pool that would play for the titles. Club the match, but the gap was too great going president Paul Mery and wife Sharon teamed well together winning their pool meeting Dale down 9-6.

This gave Caitlyn Mitchell a clean sweep and Akiyo Keehen, winners from the second

winning all titles two years in a row.

A well-deserved title and at least a local won!

In the juniors there was plenty of tennis to come. Red, Orange, and Green ball events were well supported, including the 12 and 16&U events. This was going to see another four days of great tennis.

Eight of our finest little athletes entered the red ball singles. These guys are aged 5-6 years and are very competitive when it comes to winning trophies. Isaac Meersbergen had a great start not dropping a match in his pool and it was Jacob Mery in the opposite pool also getting through undefeated.

The boys played off for the Gove Open Red Ball champion. A close game and great point play had parents gasping but it was Isaac that concentrated on the task winning the final 21-15.

In the Orange Ball singles 15 players made up the draw. A great number of entries. New comer to town, Louan Venter, was eager and keen to do well. With strong wins all the way through the draw, dropping only six games in four matches taking the title over Palak Bangia 4-2. The girls had a great game and some long rallies. Making it through to the consolation final was Lachlan Merrett. Excited in making it to the final, Lachy held on for a strong win over Mackenzie Asplin 4-1.

In the Green Ball singles Charlie Miller and Jacob Meersbergen went through their respective pools undefeated setting the scene for a great final. The boys had met in previous tournaments, but it was Jacob the made his mark on the match winning with a comfortable score line 6-2.

In the boys 12&U singles Brendan O’Sullivan continued his form from Darwin winning the title. Brendan playing his last year in the 12’s, made quick work of Zachary Scott Jones, but it was not without a fight. Some great rallies and passing shots saw the boys work for the ball, but it was Brendan with great

composure winning 6-1, 6-0.

In the boys 16&U singles, Ben Lye was indestructible not dropping a game in the singles and only two games in the doubles. Ben outclassed the local kids defeating Brendan O’Sullivan in the final.

Disappointing entries in the girl’s 12&U singles with only four players entered. This made the national points value very small.

Darcie Hockings having a great tournament worked hard for the ball. But it was Eytahnyia Scott Jones undefeated winning the age group.

Backing it up in the 16’s Eytahnyia finished third, not quite enough for the top two. Once again it was a Caitlyn Mitchell and Bonnie Usher show down. The words of advice to Bonnie from club coach Nicky Mayer, proved detrimental to Caitlyn with Bonnie playing the best match of her life.

Always the bridesmaid to Caitlyn, Bonnie took the first set 6-4. Parents and I think Caitlyn were in shock that Bonnie had won the first set.

Credit to Caitlyn she regrouped but had to work hard to win the second 6-4. Each player a set a piece. This set the scene for a great third set and that it was. Right to the wire.

Game for game. Errors from Caitlyn allowed Bonnie to stay in the match. It was going to be a tough mental game for both players. Nail biting stuff with the third so close it was 5 all then 6 all. No tie breaks in a third set so it had to be a two game advantage.

Point for point, but it was Caitlyn that closed out the third 8-6.

Caitlyn is now preparing to head off to Vietnam to contest her first ITF event.

A great way to finish a huge eight days of tennis for the Gove Open Carnival.

Runners in training for half-marathon RUNNERS are being encouraged to make sure they are in training for the upcoming half marathon being hosted by the Runners North group.

The 21km run will take place on October 6, starting and finishing at the Gove Aquatic Centre.

The start is at 7am and the course is likely to be out and back along the refinery bike path. The event will cater for individuals and teams and further details will be available soon.

Runners North has about 30 members and caters for the serious runner and social jogger, with the emphasis on participating in an event rather than competing in a race.

The club motto is ‘Running for fun and fitness, any pace, any distance’.

Events are held every Wednesday starting at 5.30pm from the Lions Club Park playground on the corner of Banyan Road and Chesterfield Half-marathon runners.

Tilba Tilba out for a sail.

WANTED

By NEAL BAULCH ANOTHER beautiful day greeted the first race for the Melville Bay series on Sunday, July 29, which is the second race series of the year for the Gove Boat Club.

Races will be held fortnightly and will culminate with race six on October 14.

Seeing as there were only three boats taking part and a large contingency of people wishing to crew, it was decided not to race, but to take to the water in a very informal manner.

This allowed the boats to set up with less sail and make more room for those wishing to enjoy the afternoon with the wind in their hair. Apparently there were no sheep stations at stake.

The three boats that ventured out

were Sauvignon, Tilba Tilba and Sans Souci.

Sauvignon had recently changed hands and is now proudly owned by Peter Bailey.

She was at one point going to be sailed across to Darwin, but, after the sale, it is great to see that she is going to remain in Gove waters and hopefully compete in the racing.

Tilba Tilbam sailed by Seamus and Donna, has almost become famous after recently featuring on the front cover of the Cruising Helmsman magazine.

The wind was a nice ironic racing strength of 15 to 20 knots with moderate chop, and the three boats meandered around the tug cyclone buoys, half tide rock and the yachts anchored in the harbour.

It wasn’t long after setting sail it

was noticed that Tilba Tilba’s mainsail was in poor shape with a large rip along the leech, only held together by the edging.

Seamus persisted like this showing off the tenacious qualities of his gear until a reef in the main hid the fact that he would be surfing sails-r-us later that night.

At some point as Sans Souci sailed alongside, he was also heard saying something about, “ may as well go the whole hog and get a headsail as well”.

It appeared Donna was saying something completely different, although I couldn’t quite make out what it was over the wind.

It was a good start to the race series and we hope to see some more contenders out this Sunday for the next race. See you all then.
