ACADEMY RULES & GUIDELINES

Participants are to compete on horses designated as school horses, or horses that are regularly used in riding lesson program instruction. Classes are not USEF recognized. Horses are encouraged to be lesson horses of any breed and should display the characteristics of such. All breeds of horses are welcome, as long as they display good manners and a quiet disposition.

Riders are MAY NOT cross enter into any non-academy riding classes and are ineligible to compete in ACT classes once they have shown in a full riding suit or in a Class A Arabian Competition. Academy horses with Arabian registration papers MAY cross enter into Arabian classes. Horses can cross enter in ANY ACT classes, but riders may not cross enter between the Walk, Walk/Trot, or the Walk/Trot/Canter classes.

ATTIRE: Riding suits and chaps are not allowed. Riding pants, jodhpurs, breeches, or colored jeans are considered appropriate. A neatly fitted shirt or top is suggested. An ASTM/SEI riding helmet is MANDATORY for all Academy riders aged 12 and under and encouraged for all. Appropriate footwear with a small heel is mandatory.

TACK: A cut-back saddle for saddle seat, western saddle for stock seat and a hunt saddle for hunt seat are to be used. Work bridles and bits, including snaffles, are allowed, and running or German martingales are permitted. Any leverage bit rein is PROHIBITED through the running martingale or used with a German martingale. Tie downs, standing martingales and blinkers are not allowed.

Any horse or rider that is deemed unsafe or is not abiding by these rules may be eliminated by the horse show management.

Each class should be judged on the rider’s basic equitation and horsemanship skills suited to the class discipline, with emphasis placed on the rider’s ability to control the horse at all times, identify correct diagonals and leads promptly, and to control their horse’s rate in a consistent manner. In the Horsemanship Pleasure classes, quality of the horse is not judged but rather the rider’s ability to best display the horse’s MANNERS and a pleasurable way of going. Riders should convey the impression of good posture, balance, and effective control while commanding proper speed of gaits and show ring placement.

Headers are allowed in the line up in all walk and walk-trot classes. HORSES ARE NOT TO BE JUDGED, only the rider’s ability to control themselves and their horses and present themselves to their best advantage.

Horses must possess a current Coggins and Health Certificate, and MUST be provided with entry.

Classes are $15/$20 each and stalls for Academy horses are $165.

AHAF ACADEMY HORSEMANSHIP CUP: this is a pattern class open to all seats. It will be a walk-trot/ jog pattern. The pattern will be released prior to the show so entrants have time to prepare. There will be no rail work.

AHAF IN HAND PATTERN CLASS: Handlers will execute a pattern that demonstrates the handlers control of horse. Judged on manners and accuracy. Horse may be used for multiple handlers.

A Program for Newcomers... REGARDLESS OF AGE

The Keystone Riding Initiative is a newly developed program managed by the Keystone Arabian Experience Committee*. This initiative is structured to introduce newcomers to Arabians and Half-Arabians through its support of riding and horsemanship programs, as well as providing aid to beginner riders interested in pursuing lessons and horsemanship courses at riding facilities that use Arabians and Half-Arabians in their education programs.

The program’s mission is to provide an experience with Arabian horses to all those that have interest, regardless of their financial status or age. The program grants aid directly to Arabian and/or Half-Arabian lesson programs, providing up to $400 per individual applicant applying as first-time/beginner horse persons in need of verified financial aid. Aid is supplied directly to the Arabian or Half-Arabian lesson program, horsemanship course, or camp for the applicant.

The purpose of this essential aid is to provide newcomers the opportunity to thoroughly experience the connection, affinity, versatility and intelligence of the Arabian and/or Half-Arabian breeds, in addition to the horsemanship and valuable lessons learned through riding. Each grant should fund between 4 to 6 lessons (depending upon the program) delivering a true immersive experience with the Arabian horse.

TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR KEYSTONE RIDING INITIATIVE AID:

• Applicants must complete all areas of the online application

• Applications and lessons programs will be reviewed and considered by designated Keystone Committee Members to determine eligibility and designated aid

• Application process may include brief interview of applicant

• All aid will be sent directly by the Arabian Horse Promotional Fund to the approved riding academy or lesson program on the applicant’s behalf

• Riding academies and/or programs also have the ability to apply for aid on behalf of a current student showing exceptional horsemanship, enthusiasm and admiration for the Arabian breed that is in need of financial assistance

Horses N Heroes of Marion County, Inc. is a 17-acre farm and home to approximately 25 horses who play an influential role in the lives of people, different from their former illustrious show careers. Mindy Morrow, a once competitive equestrian herself, founded the program in 1994 and has devoted her adult life to mentoring young girls by partnering them with her horses to foster self-esteem, responsibility, teamwork, kind heartedness, commitment and more. Knowing what these animals are capable of, Mindy tasks them with an important role in the community, providing a vital service.

Horses N Heroes is dedicated to providing an equine learning and mentoring experience for young girls who come from families with extreme financial constraints. Most come from families under the poverty level, however, Mindy Morrow holds her doors open for any girl experiencing drama or hardship, and there is no fee for participation in the program. These girls are given the

opportunity to bond with horses, and are taught all aspects of horsemanship, including but not limited to, riding, grooming, feeding and caring for the donated horses.

Horses N Heroes’ goal of bringing horses and children together also provides retired show horses a second lease on life with an even more considerable job at hand; the rewards these horses can add to the collection of ribbons they once garnished, are the met goals and accomplishments of the girls whose lives they influence.

Horses N Heroes is a place to be cared for, to be noticed, and to be celebrated … both for the two-legged and four!
