A nearly limitless array of extraordinary music is available to draw from, spanning works by the great masters; forward-looking, leading edge Pops artists; and creative thinkers who engage the hearts and minds of our young audiences. I consider each concert program an invaluable opportunity to interact with you, our audience, and it is with you in mind that we have put together this exciting new season. My hope is that the programs you see in these pages prove to be meaningful, enjoyable, thought-provoking additions to our lives as we experience them uniquely here, in the place we live. The experiences we share and the dialogues we create will be how we continue to build our community, together.

by Maestro Gordon Gerrard. The heart-wrenching beauty of He’s Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto parallels the tragic romance found in the ballet music of Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, and two ChineseCanadians—composer Vincent Ho and violinist Lucy Wang—further electrify this program, as Ho’s dream-like Dragon Realms bridges Eastern and Western musical styles, and Wang’s virtuosity as soloist takes centre stage.

Old, New, Borrowed and Blue Saturday, October 24, 2020 at 7:30 pm Gordon Gerrard, conductor • Jonathan Craig Penner, cello • • Winner of the 2019 Shurniak Competition, up-and-coming Regina cellist Jonathan Craig Penner is the soloist in the effervescent, vibrant, and invigorating Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1. The second half of the program contrasts Prokofiev’s youthful, renegade Symphony No. 1, which borrows its structure from the Classical era, with Mozart’s final symphonic masterpiece. Birdsongs colour Canadian composer Jocelyn Morlock’s evocative Oiseaux bleus et exotiques.

For Earth and Sky Sunday, November 29, 2020 at 3 pm Gordon Gerrard, conductor • Gordon Wolfe, trombone • • Our natural world has always inspired and influenced composers, both with its beauty and grandeur, and through the complex fragility of its relationship with humankind. The soaring ‘swan-theme’ from the final movement of the Sibelius Fifth Symphony contrasts with the clouds of harmony and organic layers of sound in Canadian composer Linda Catlin Smith’s Nuages. The hints of impending climate catastrophe in the music of Jordan Pal’s Scylla, named for the Greek mythological sea monster (paired with its pal Charybdis, catching sailors between two impossible choices), a title that symbolizes the difficult choices ahead for humanity, will challenge and ultimately inspire you. Gordon Wolfe, Principal Trombonist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, will be soloist.

Guest conductor, Canadian Adam Johnson, leads the RSO in a concert featuring the music of three of history’s greatest composers. J.S. Bach’s extraordinary Orchestral Suite No. 3, featuring the famous and beloved “Air on the G-string,” sets the stage for two greats of the Classical era: one of Haydn’s rare minor-key symphonies showcases his typical musical humour, and the great Canadian pianist Jane Coop brings her pianistic poetry to perform Beethoven’s monumental Emperor Concerto.

Passionate Piano Saturday, February 13, 2021 at 7:30 pm Gordon Gerrard, conductor • Ian Parker, piano •• Beethoven penned his infamous letter to his “Immortal Beloved,” a mysterious figure in his life, the same summer during which he wrote his very classical Eighth Symphony, a kind of beautiful calm before the storm of his mighty Ninth. This concert will captivate you, as Beethoven’s masterpiece is paired with one of the best-known and most exciting works for piano, Grieg’s only piano concerto, performed by singular Canadian pianist Ian Parker. There might be Shivering Stars on a cold Regina night in February, but the concert hall is warm and inviting.

Join the RSO on a sensational, multi-media whirlwind of a dance tour. We start with the overheated ballrooms of Europe as portrayed in Ravel’s La valse, reflecting the scandal of the waltz in the early 19th century, and end with the final composition of Rachmaninoff’s, composed after he fled to America following the Russian Revolution. In between, you will be transported by Adizokan, a potent mix of dance, video, electro-acoustic and orchestra by Red Sky Performance, featuring throat-boxer Nelson Tagoona, and directed by Sandra Laronde.

Sibelius’s only violin concerto towers as a pinnacle of the genre, with dark and searing melodies soaring above a snowy Finnish landscape. The life-enhancing joy of Dvořák’s well-known Eighth Symphony concludes the concert with heroic abandon. Canadian composer Michael Oesterle’s Home opens the program, and Canadian conductor Tania Miller—former Music Director of the Victoria Symphony and Associate Conductor of the Vancouver Symphony—commands the podium with her dynamic style, charm, and grace.

Each section of the orchestra receives a virtuoso turn in Brahms’s Variations, and Mahler’s quasi-symphonic poem, his First Symphony. Soon Max is on a whirlwind adventure that takes him from the concert hall to the vibrant lands of Latin American culture where – with the help of his new friend, Mambo the dog, the orchestra, and the audience – Max learns the magic of Latin rhythms and how to “dance” with the music.

The beloved children’s poetry collection Alligator Pie by Toronto poet Dennis Lee is set to music by Canadian composer Abigail Richardson-Schulte. The familiar lines and rhymes will spring off the page and onto the concert stage, igniting delight in poetry and music lovers alike.
